Our 25th. Debutante Ball 

Thirteen debutantes and their partners walked the red carpet  last Saturday evening to make their debut at the 25th. Kempsey High School Debutante Ball. The debutantes and their partners were presented to guests of honour Mrs Jo Robinson and Mr Phillip Jupp by Matron of Honour, Mrs Liz McMahon. Then it was into the dancing which saw parents and  grandparents  joining  in  for  a  great  evening.  A  sumptuous  meal  was  served  to complete a great night. We sincerely thank dance teacher Mr Neil Muncton, DJ Mr Paul Wood, Mrs  Louise Ryan, Mrs Anne e Mayhew, Mrs  Lyn Kesby, Mrs Bernade e Poole, MCs Captains Sean Groth and Ashlee Stanton and Year Adviser Mr Jarryd Hensley. The debutantes  and  their  partners  included:  Brooke  Bruce‐Smith  &  Ma hew  McAlister, Hayley Cooper & Sean Bruce‐Smith, Kyrine Ennis & Jack Saveall, Isabella Gardiner & Zac Bell, Kaitlin Hutley & Jai Sammar no, Kiara Kyle & Reuben Hollows, Bianca Lyon & Juan Debono,  Isabella  Mickle  &  Liam  Whalen,  Emma  Mitchell  &  Darby  Prior,  Bianca Pogoriutschnig & Zac Mar n, Rachel Pidcock & Thanakorn Phakphai,  Isabella Turner & Thanakorn Phakphai and McKeely Witchard & Oscar Kerr.

P&C Supports with $40,000 dona on 

At  its  second  term  mee ng  the  Kempsey  High  School Parents & Ci zens Associa on donated $40,000 to purchase a  range  of  teaching  and  learning  materials  for  students. English  novels,  musical  instruments,  cameras,  spor ng equipment  and  technology  resources were  among  a  range of equipment to be purchased for students. The funds came from the opera on of the Kempsey High School Canteen by a  small  dedicated  band  of  parents  and  grandparents  of students and  former students. We sincerely  thank  the P&C and the Canteen Commi ee for their ongoing hard work for the students.

Thursday 31st. August 2017 4.15pm  

At the end of Term 2, elders, special guests, parents, students and staff came together for the  NAIDOC  assembly  in  prepara on  for  the  celebra on  of  NAIDOC  2017.  To  open  the event,  Aun es  Esther  Quinlan,  Gladys  Atkinson,  Caroline  Bradshaw  and  Juli Morris with students  from  the  Girls  Academy  sang  “I  Am  Australian”  in  Dunghu   language.  Those assembled  learnt more about the deep spiritual significance of Aboriginal  languages which enables Aboriginal people to maintain their connec on with their ancestors,  land and  law. Seven students were honoured with NAIDOC Awards: Dominic Hearne and Connor McKelvie (Leadership),  Sarah  Honess  (Voca onal  Educa on),  Genevieve  Dunn  (Crea vity),  Teesha Spearpoint  (Academic),  Ivan  Madden  (Sport)  and  Trent  Fernando  (Ci zenship).  Leon Thompson, Natoya Quinlan and Katherine Honess received Encouragement Awards. Georgie Morris received a NAIDOC staff award.  

NAIDOC 2017 

A 30 – strong Ca le Team  returned  from Wingham Beef Week with some great  results.  

Callum Clarke was named Champion Parader out of 385  students.   When  the parading 

came down to the final four paraders, Kempsey High had three of the four posi ons with 

Clayton Dries and Liam Whalen joining Callum. Clayton Dries was named Herdsperson and 

was  also  the  Reserve  Champion  Retail  Judge  on  Carcass.  William  Saul  was  named 

Champion Meat Grader. Cooper Gray, Ka e Barne  and Clayton Dries along with William 

took out  the Overall Reserve Meat Grader Team of 4. Ashlee Stanton was 3rd. out of 27 

schools  in the Allround Contributor by School on the Hoof. The school took second place 

out of 60 steers  in the middle weight sec on with an Osborne & Dowling donated steer. 

There were  five  first  places  in  the  heats  for  parading  and  numerous  placings.    In  the 

Younger  Beef Apprecia on  sec on,  Blade  Smith,  Tom Harwood  and  Jon  Mo ee were 

placed. Kempsey High School won the ul mate award being the Team of Four Champion 

Beef Apprecia on School.  

Wingham Beef Week 

Preparing for the Wauchope Show 

The  Kempsey  High  School  Ca le  team  travelled  to  the  Royal  Queensland  Show  (the “EKKA”)  last fortnight and achieved some outstanding results. Lachlan Clarke was named Champion Judge (senior 16‐18 years) and overall Reserve Champion Junior Judge.  Out of 28 schools, the KHS Team of Three judges Ashlee Stanton, William Saul and Clayton Dries received  a Highly  Commended Ribbon. William  Saul  took  2nd.  place  in  the  16‐18  years paraders. In the Carcase Compe on, “Wombat”, the 14 month  Murray Grey x Charolais steer weighed in at 456kg and took third place. The steer had been chosen and purchased by the students from former Kempsey local, Shad Bailey at a Colin Say & Co. sale in Glen Innes. Another fantas c result for Kempsey. Well done. 

Wauchope Show Only a week a er some successful compe on at the Royal Easter Show, the school holidays was no barrier to  loads of enthusiasm  for the ca le team. 28 students  including a number from  partner  primary  schools  accompanied  by  several  parents made  the  trek  with  two truckloads of stock and  trailers packed  to  the  roof with gear. The success  is not about  the many ribbons that were won but rather about the coopera on, teamwork and mentoring of younger students by the older experienced ones. And  it truly  is an  impressive undertaking. Beginning with  the morning  briefing  the  day  before  by Mr  Saul  (pictured  le )  the  team swung  into  ac on with  experienced  students working with  younger  ones  to manage  the prepara on of  livestock, packing, checking of  trailers,  repair of equipment, organiza on of food, cooking, personal and sleeping gear and all the paperwork that accompanies it.  

The EKKA 

16th. Matsushige Visit 

Our friends from Matsushige Junior High School have come and gone in an all‐to‐short visit. Twenty  students  accompanied  by  staff  from  the  Matsushige  Town  Council  and  the Matsushige  Junior High School  spent 5 days  in Kempsey. The  students were billeted with our  families and the Matsushige students and their parents are always so grateful  for this opportunity  to experience Australian  life first‐hand. The students and  their Kempsey High School  student  hosts  visited  Timbertown  and  spent  me  together  in  classes  to  get  an experience of Australian  schooling. A  formal  assembly  featured  an  exchange of  gi s  and students  singing  each  others’  na onal  anthems.  Family  me  and  sight‐seeing  occupied Saturday before our visitors le  for Sydney and Cairns on Sunday.  

Geography Field Trip Sixty‐four Year 10 students got first hand experience  in  taking observa ons, field sketches 

and  notes  during  the  semester  one  Geography  field  trip  to  Crescent  Head.  In  perfect 

weather,  the  students  observed wave  ac on,  coastal  erosion  and  shaping  and  iden fied 

various species of plants. They discussed issues in coastal management including compe ng 

interests  for use of  the  resource. The quality of  the BBQ  lunch also  featured highly  in  the 

students’ posi ve  feedback. Students completed a major assessment on the results of the 

field study.  

History Comes Alive The end of semester one was an opportunity for students  in Years 7 and 8 to experience a 

li le of what  it was  like to  live  in Medieval  mes.   Ray and Colin from Cel c Thunder took 

over the school hall for a presenta on of medieval ar facts and costumes.  It made history 

fun and provided a highly engaging and student‐centred learning experience.  

Trent Fernando: Swimming Year  9  student,  Trent  Fernando  competed  in  the  50  metres  para‐athlete freestyle at the State Swimming Centre at Homebush. He had previously  broken  the  zone  swimming  record  for  this  event.  It was Trent’s first  me compe ng at this level and he took it all in his stride. Trent had some good support too because he is an integral member of the  ca le  team which was  compe ng not  too  far away at  the Royal Easter Show. So at  the appointed  me ca le  team members quickly became the Kempsey boy’s swimming supporters. Well done Trent.  

Semester  One Spor ng Achievements 

Jarno Dolezal: Rugby Union Jarno Dolezal was selected in the NSW Country Junior under 15s Rugby Union team from his  local Cannonballs side. The team beat the Junior ACT Brumbies 17‐5, lost to NSW City 47‐5 and beat a combined Sydney side.  The  coach  is  rather  pleased  to  have  the  state’s  second  fastest runner playing on the wing because  Jarno crossed  for a try  in each of the three matches.  The side is back in Sydney on 10th. September.   

Connor Carbu : Powerli ing Boy are we proud of Connor Carbu ! 15 year old Connor became the NSW Super Heavy Weight Champion  in Powerli ing. Connor broke the record  for  his  age  and  weight  range  with  some  incredible  li ing compe ng  in  the Open division. Connor  li ed 230kgs  in  the deadli , 195kgs  in  the  squat  and  125kgs  in  the  bench  press.  Connor  will compete at the Na onals in Brisbane in September. Go Connor! 

Jackson Korn: Cricket Jackson Korn was called up to the Combined High Schools  (CHS) State Cricket team to play  in the All Schools Cricket Championships. Jackson played  at wicket  keeper  two  years below his  age  group  in  the opens team. The CHS team played two matches against a GPS Combined team and a Combined Catholic Colleges team. CHS won both games. It was a great  opportunity  for  Jackson  who  has  shone  this  year  in  the  local Macleay cricket compe on and  it augers well for his cricke ng future to be playing at this level while s ll rela vely young. Well done Jackson. 

 

Ivan Madden and Khalil Hammond: Rugby League Ivan Madden was selected  in the under  15s  North  Coast  Zone Rugby  League  team  and  Khalil Hammond  was  selected  in  the Opens side.  

Courtney Kelly‐Scholes: Netball Courtney Kelly‐Scholes was selected in the North Coast Open Netball team.  

Rugby League: under 15s The  Kempsey  High  School  under  15’s  Rugby  League  team  defeated  Macksville  High, Melville High and  St. Pauls College  in  the early  rounds of  the Country Cup. All  the boys played very well with special men ons to Ethan Cooper and Sam Dunn. The team advanced to  beat Orara High  10‐4  but  unfortunately went  down  in  the North  Coast  Final  against  Camden Haven High.  Ivan Madden was  awarded  the Best  and  Fairest  award which was selected by Country Rugby League representa ves.  

Macleay Public Schools:  Students Leadership Training 

62  student  leaders  from  ten Macleay  Public  Schools gathered  last  term  for  the annual  leaders  training day.  14 student  leaders  from  Melville and  Kempsey  high  schools prepared  and  delivered  the extensive  program  with guidance  from  Ms.  Chris ne Negus  (Melville  High)  and Mrs Linda Sneddon (Kempsey High). The  program  comprised leadership  training  ac vi es including  team  building,  public speaking,  serving  as  a  leader and running mee ngs.  

STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths 

The Year  9  Engineering  class  came  to  a  climax on  the  last day of  term one when  the students got to test their bridges under the weight of a Nissan Patrol. The bridges were built  en rely of wood  and  glue.  The  students had  researched bridge design  and built several different models to test. Three of the seven bridges were able to hold the weight of the vehicle. Meanwhile, Year 7 and 8 students are designing, building and tes ng rockets. The paper rockets are propelled with air expelled  into a  launcher  from a plas c drink bo le. The highly engaging unit  is part of the program  integra ng Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathema cs (STEM). Students have to design and test their rocket and then modify the design to enable the rocket to more accurately land in the landing area. This process of design – test – redesign is the essence of STEM. Students work with each other to find solu ons to problems.  

Dance Fes val 

Students  from  twenty‐three  schools  par cipated  in  the  three  day  Southern  Network Dance Fes val at the end of term 2. It was a magnificent display of talent and skill and a tribute to the teachers and students who put their heart and soul into the event. Sixty‐two items  were  performed.  Kempsey  High  School  presented  two  items,  Love  Runs  Out performed  by  years  9‐11  and  Disconnect  performed  by  years  7  and  8.  Disconnect was presented at the Glasshouse event which showcased the best of the fes val.  Well done to everyone involved.
