TRAVELING EXHIBIT, STATE LIBRARY OF OHIOMarch 7 – April 15, 2011

Why did a nation founded on ideals of freedom and equality tolerate for so longone of the harshest labor systems the world has known? A traveling exhibition openingat the State Library of Ohio on March 7, 2011 looks for answers to this question bytracing Abraham Lincoln’s gradual transformation from an antislavery moderate into“The Great Emancipator,” who began the process to free all slaves with a revolutionarywar-time proclamation in 1863. “Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln’s Journey toEmancipation” will be on display at the library until April 15, 2011.

The slavery controversy handed the presidency to an unlikely nominee namedAbraham Lincoln, a moderate former Whig with no executive experience and littleprior claim to national prominence. Forever Free suggests that Lincoln himselfembodied the paradox of the slaveholding American republic. He deeply hated slavery, hated it “as much as any abolitionist,” he once said. But Lincoln could never bringhimself to embrace the abolitionists’ uncompromising demand for an immediate andunconditional end to the centuries-old evil. He could only hope that, confined to theSouth, slavery would eventually die away. Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln’sJourney to Emancipation tells how it was that Lincoln, a gradualist who had rejectedimmediate abolition, became the president who abruptly abolished slavery.

The State Library of Ohio is located at 274 E. First Ave, Columbus, OH 43201. TheLibrary is open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5 pm. An opening reception and freeprogram will be held on March 9, 2011 at 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
