Constant term

The Constant Term is an expression or equation has a fixed value and does not contain variable.

Division of fractions property

The principle that states division by a fraction is equivalent to multiplication by the fraction reciprocal.

Equation

A number sentence that contain an equal sign.

Equivalent equations

Equations that have the same solution

Inequality

A number sentence with >,<,

Integers

A number in the set …,-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4… a whole number or the opposite of a whole

number.

Multiplication property of -1

A property of multiplication that says for any number a, (-1) *a=(OPP)a or –a.

The opposite of 6 is -6The opposite of 4 is -4

Nested parentheses

Nested parentheses are parentheses that are inside parentheses

((10+10) = 15+5)

((2*2)= 2+2)

Open sentence

A number sentence which is neither true nor false because one or more variables holds the place of the missing number

Opposite of a number

A number that is the same distance from 0 on the number line as a given but on the oppsite side of 0.

• OPP of A is –A

• OPP of –C is C

Order of operations

Rules that tell what order to perform operations in arithmetic and algebra. The order of operations is parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.

Reciprocal

• Two number whose product is 1. For example, The reciprocal of 5 is 1/5 and the reciprocal of 3/5 is 5/3. reciprocals are also called multiplicative inverses.

The reciprocal of 5 is 1/5

The reciprocal of 1/9 is 9

Relation symbol

A symbol used to express a relationship between two quantities.

• > means “is more than”

• < means “ is less than”

Repeating decimals

A decimal in which one digit or a group of digits is repeated without end.

• 0.33 is a repeating decimal

• 0.346 is a repeating decimal

Solution

An answer to a math problem.

3+3=6. 6 is the solution

9*9=81. 81 is the solution

Solution set

The set of all solutions of an equation or inequality.

• X5=25. 25 is the solution.

• 5+n=20.20 is the solution.

Terminating decimals

A decimal that ends.

• 0.30 is a terminating decimal

• 0.40 is a terminating decimal.

Trial and error method

A method for finding the solution of an equation by trying several test numbers.

Variable

A letter or other symbol that represents a number. A variable can represent one specific number or it can stand for many different numbers.

D+E=F D=20 E=20 F=40 So D,E,and F are all variables
