Introducing the Area Health Education Center
Nationally, Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) are federally-funded programs that strive to enhance access to quality health care, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of healthcare professionals through community/academic educational partnerships.
• There are AHECs in 47 states (both a State Program Office and individual AHEC Centers);
• Many AHECs focus on the same objectives but have flexibility to determine how to fulfill the objectives within their state and region;
The VIRGINIA Area Health Education Centers
In Virginia, AHECs work to enhance the recruitment, training and retention of a diverse health work force for underserved communities. The Virginia AHEC was established in 1991.
• Currently, the Virginia AHECs are operating under a 5-year grant that has the following objectives:
1. Health Career Promotion & Pipeline Activities;2. Community-Based Clinical Education;3. Professional Education & Support; and4. Health & Community Development

Introducing the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority (VHWDA)
• The Virginia AHECs lost its state funding in 2007/2008;
• Led to the creation of a leading entity, the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority (VHWDA);
• The General Assembly approved the legislation for the creation of the VHWDA in 2011;
• The VHWDA also acts as the State AHEC Program Office;
• The VHWDA serves as the advisory board and
sets priorities for the Virginia Area Health
Education Centers (AHEC) Program;
MISSION OF VHWDA
To facilitate the development of a statewide health professions pipeline that identifies, educates, recruits and retains a diverse,
appropriately geographically distributed and culturally competent quality workforce for all
Virginians
CODE OF VIRGINIA – THE VHWDAI. Providing the statewide infrastructure required for health
workforce needs assessment and planning that maintains engagement by health professions training programs in decision making and program implementation;
II. Coordinating with and serving as a resource to relevant state, regional, and local entities including the Department of Health Professions Workforce Data Center, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, the Joint Commission on Health Care, the Southwest Virginia Health Authority, or any similar regional health authority that may be developed;
III. Identifying high priority target areas within each region of the Commonwealth and working toward health workforce development initiatives that improve health measurably in those areas; and
IV. Fostering or creating innovative health workforce development models that provide both health and economic benefits to the regions they serve.
THE STATEWIDE AHECS ACCOMPLISHED THE FOLLOWING OVER THE PAST YEAR JULY 1, 2014-JUNE 30,2015:
Provided Health Careers Promotion and Preparation (HCPP) Programs for 4,532 individuals (1,694 under 20 years old)
Distributed 3,158 Health Career Manuals to HCPP Program participants, guidance counselors, career counselors and WIBs
Coordinated Community-Based Student Education (CBSE) placements for 302 health professions students (physicians, NPs, PAs, RNs, dentists, dental assistants/hygienists) for 69,285 hours of clinical training in primary care settings across Virginia
Sponsored 81 Continuing Education Programs for 2,136 trainees including physicians, NPs, PAs, mental health workers, pharmacists, nurses and medical interpreters to improve clinical competence
Provided 21,261 medical interpretation encounters for non-English speaking residents to improve health communication and quality of care

PATHS AHEC PATHS or Piedmont Access To Health Services, Inc. is a federally
funded Community Health Center with Medical, Dental, Behavioral Health, and Pharmacy Services.
PATHS has facilities in Danville, Chatham, Martinsville, and Boydton.
PATHS received the South Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC) grant in January 2014
The AHEC of PATHS Serves the Cities of Danville, Martinsville, Lynchburg and Bedford along with the Counties of Pittsylvania, Henry, Bedford, Patrick, Franklin, Campbell, Amherst, and Appomattox
One of the goals of the AHEC is to establish a youth public health program to expose and recruit high school students into health careers, with a focus on careers in public health, minority students, and the economically disadvantaged.
The AHEC program accomplishes this goal by: Creative, hands-on and innovative
health careers curriculum for young students;
Student introduction to a wide assortment of health career possibilities;
Guidance in goal setting and educational planning;
Science courses that strengthen critical thinking skills; and/or
Working with schools, colleges and community partners in targeting economically disadvantaged students and those from underrepresented minority groups for school and summer institutes.

WHAT HAS PATHS AHEC PROVIDED?
Summer camps for middle and high school students on health careers and science education
Health career workshops with Project Discovery
Career Fairs that connected high school students with Health Care Professionals, Careers, and Health Science Enrichment.
Sponsorship and participation in the 2014 Career Expo which exposed area opportunities for employment to 7th and 9th grade students in the health care industry.
Opportunities for students to shadow or assist in our Medical or Dental Centers
UPCOMING PLANS
Summer of 2016
Plans are in the initial stage with Centra Health to sponsor a Health Camp at their new Gretna Health Care Facility in the Summer of 2016.
Career Expo 2015
PATHS AHEC will again participate in the Career Expo on September 30th and October 1st at the Olde Dominion Agriculture Center in Pittsylvania County.
7th and 9th Grade Students from Martinsville, Danville, Patrick County, Pittsylvania County, Henry County, and Halifax County will attend. Approximately 4,000 students and school staff will come.

WHAT WE DO
Current Programs
Interpreter Training—offer the nationally-recognized 40-hour Bridging the Gap Course for bilinguals who pass language proficiency testing (age 18 & older)
Interpreter Services—hire and provide high quality interpreters for LEP individuals for medical, mental health, school and social services appointments
Promotores de Salud—offer a 40-hour training for lay health workers in the Hispanic community
Promotores Jr.—offer a newly-developed 20-hour program for high school students interested in being peer-to-peer health promoters
Futuro Latino—coordinate a community coalition focused on preventing/reducing drug and alcohol abuse among Latino youth
WHY IT MATTERS
Interpreter Training—>Annually, 40+ highly-trained medical interpreters are added to the region. They can get a good part-time job that serves as an entrée to health careers.
Interpreter Services—>Better communication between providers and patients/clients in over 12,000 appointments annually in our area leads to better health!
Promotores de Salud—>Each year, about 20 more trained lay health promoters learn about key health issues and connect regularly with Hispanic community members.
Promotores Jr.—>Youth are armed with reliable information on health and relationship topics and learn how to influence their peers. They also learn about health care careers.
Futuro Latino—>Community collaboration raises the awareness of parents and youth regarding the legal and personal consequences of underage drinking and drug use.
