Introducing the Area Health Education Center

Nationally, Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) are federally-funded programs that strive to enhance access to quality health care, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of healthcare professionals through community/academic educational partnerships.

• There are AHECs in 47 states (both a State Program Office and individual AHEC Centers);

• Many AHECs focus on the same objectives but have flexibility to determine how to fulfill the objectives within their state and region;

Introducing the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority (VHWDA)

• The Virginia AHECs lost its state funding in 2007/2008;

• Led to the creation of a leading entity, the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority (VHWDA);

• The General Assembly approved the legislation for the creation of the VHWDA in 2011;

• The VHWDA also acts as the State AHEC Program Office;

• The VHWDA serves as the advisory board and

sets priorities for the Virginia Area Health

Education Centers (AHEC) Program;

Page 26: Keisha SmithAileen Edwards HarrisMarsha G.Mendenhall Executive DirectorExecutive DirectorExecutive Director VHWDACapital AHECPATHs V IRGINIA HEALTH & MEDICAL.

WHY IT MATTERS

Interpreter Training—>Annually, 40+ highly-trained medical interpreters are added to the region. They can get a good part-time job that serves as an entrée to health careers.

Interpreter Services—>Better communication between providers and patients/clients in over 12,000 appointments annually in our area leads to better health!

Promotores de Salud—>Each year, about 20 more trained lay health promoters learn about key health issues and connect regularly with Hispanic community members.

Promotores Jr.—>Youth are armed with reliable information on health and relationship topics and learn how to influence their peers. They also learn about health care careers.

Futuro Latino—>Community collaboration raises the awareness of parents and youth regarding the legal and personal consequences of underage drinking and drug use.
