Alameda County Housing Bond Town Hall
The Board of Supervisors have convened community fo-
rums to discuss our proposed housing bond over the last
few months. On Monday, May 23, I hosted a town hall
about the housing bond for District 5 residents at the North
Berkeley Senior Center. Community members shared their
support and provided valuable feedback about how to
strengthen the bond program. The Board of Supervisors
will vote on the bond resolution on June 28, 2016. If you
would like to learn more, please contact Abigail Mariam at
[email protected] or visit http://www.acgov.org/

County Budget Hearings
As the Chair of Alameda County’s Budget Committee,
I have been working with leaders throughout the Coun-
ty to build and present our budget for 2016-2017. Over
the last two months, we have hosted public budget hear-
ings to discuss the current County Budget and learn
about how to plan for economic changes in our county
and state, driven by factors such as the housing market
and local business development. During the month of
June, we will be hard at work finalizing our budget.
Join us for our hearings during the week of June 22-24
at the Board Chambers in the County Administration
Building.
State Controller Betty Yee shared budget updates from the
Governor’s office at our budget work group session on April
26th.

African Americans Making Connections 2016
In the third iteration of our event “African Americans Making Connections,” we had nearly 400 members of the community join us to discuss and collaborate on the major issues affecting African Americans. On April 23, 2016, we began the day’s events with a panel about opportunities for investment and relationship-building in Africa and another about the legacy of the Black Panther Party. After a series of workshops on other topics that impact the African American community, includ-ing health and business development, we concluded the day with a Youth Summit. Youth artists such as Young, Gifted,
and Black, pictured above, performed their thought-provoking spoken word poems, and we had small group discussions with young people about how to address the topics that are most important to them.
Dr. Wade speaks to the audience
on about everyday stresses.
API Boys and Men Forum
On April 14, 2016, we hosted our first forum on Asian and Pacific Islander Boys and Men. The Asian Community Collaborative, in partnership with our office, orga-nized this im-
portant discussion. Sherry Hirota, of Asian Health Services, and Eddy Zheng, of the Asian Prisoner Support Commit-tee, moderated the evening’s discussion on topics, including immigration, migration, deportation, education, the criminal justice system, and mental health.
Our panelists spoke about their experiences, some of them as young men, some as immigrants, and some as formerly incarcerated individuals. As a community, we were able to have a sincere dialogue about where we can partner to ad-dress these challenges that affect our API boys and men.
Reception for the African American Quilt Guild of
Oakland
My office had the privilege of hosting the reception for the exhibition of the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland’s quilts on May 31, 2016. Featured in the New York Times, members of the guild shared the inspiration behind their Oakland-inspired art. Please stop by the Alameda County Administration Building to check out their lovely quilts from May 31-August 19, 2016.
