“It was an extremely humbling experi-ence,” said Phillips, who has worked more than four years forIntelligentsia Coffee & Tea in Chicago. The WBC is billed as “the preeminent international coffee competition.” Champions from morethan 50 nations each prepare four espressos, four cappuccinos andfour original signature drinks to exacting standards in a 15-minute performance set to music. Judges from around the world evaluateeach performance on the taste of beverages served, cleanliness, creativity, technical skill and overall presentation.

Phillips said he developed an interest in specialty coffee in Marquettewhile studying digital cinema at NMU. “I spent a lot of time at DeadRiver [Coffee Shop] and learned a lot there that I started applying onmy own. As I moved around in search of work, I continued to take itseriously on a home level, grinding my own beans and making different drinks. Eventually I decided to jump ship on the film thingand pursue full-time work as a barista.”
