St. Rose Health Career Internships Expands with Hayward Promise

.

This school year, Hayward Promise Neighborhood (HPN) is offering more supports and

services to its high schools students. At Hayward and Tennyson high, for example, HPN is

providing funding to expand the St. Rose Hospital FACES for the Future program at St. Rose

Hospital—internship and leadership development program for at-risk and minority high school

students who are interested in the health professions. The program provides students with

hospital internships, academic support, counseling, and leadership development.

Students in the program must be concurrently enrolled at Eden Area Regional Occupational

Program (ROP) in the Medical Careers or First Responders courses. Following a rigorous boot

camp training around topics such as patient privacy and the Health Insurance Portability and

Accountability Act (HIPAA) and after passing a test for mastery, the students spend time at St.

Neighborhood students who apply for the program will now receive priority admission.

Jasmine Nakagawa, Program Coordinator for FACES shared her experience, saying, “When I

Hayward Promise Youth Get Active at Summer Sports Camp

Fifty youngsters from Hayward Promise Neighborhood were among more than 125

Bay Area youth, ages 10-16 years old, who took over the Chabot College campus for

five-weeks this summer for the Chabot Summer Youth Sports Program. The camp is

designed specifically to support under-served students. It promotes a healthy lifestyle

through proper nutrition and physical fitness and builds a college-going culture

through activities that nurture dreams, strengthen respect, citizenship and

sportsmanship, and boost confidence and self-esteem —all while encouraging the

development of quality long-lasting friendships. The youth have the opportunity to

engage in a variety of sports led by Chabot students such as: basketball, soccer,

softball, swimming and dance with their peers .

For the past 13 summers Chabot has sponsored the Summer Youth Sports Program

but after Federal cuts in 2006, Chabot staff learned they would no longer have the

funding to continue the camp. Thanks to funding from Hayward Promise

Neighborhood , Chabot College Trio, Educational Talent Search and Let’s Do Lunch

Hayward...And Breakfast Too, and a grant from Career Technical Education, Chabot

was able to continue providing this quality summer youth sports for the summer of

2015.

Kartik Autar, attended Hayward Promise Neighborhood

schools: Harder Elementary, Cesar Chavez Middle School

& Tennyson High School and is now a Junior at California

State University, East Bay.

When Kartik Autar was awarded the honor of Valedictorian of his

Tennyson High School graduating class of 2013 with a 4.87

cumulative GPA; he jokingly shares, “My parents initially didn’t

even know what a Valedictorian was until my Mom mentioned it to

some of her co-workers and they told her what a big deal it was.”

The youngest of three boys, Kartik and his family immigrated to the

U.S. from Fiji when he was two years old. They settled in Hayward’s

Jackson Triangle when he was three years old. At a young age,

Kartik knew that he wanted to excel in school to attend college. “I

saw how hard my parents worked to support the family, so I

wanted to make sure their hard work paid off,” explained Kartik.

“Surrounding myself with motivated people, especially in places

like middle school and high school, kept me out of trouble and

helped me share my goals with the people around me.

Unfortunately for my classmates that dropped out of school or

barely showed up, I have seen them leading lives that involve the

wrong people, drugs, and even crime.”

As Kartik continued to excel throughout school he eventually began to take Advancement Placement (AP) classes in high

school. He relied on his friends and teachers to provide him with academic support. Neither of Kartik’s parents or older

brothers had attended a four-year university. His advanced classes such as calculus and physics were not subjects anyone in

his family had been exposed to. He learned to rely on the help of his teachers and friends to help with his advanced course

work. Now as a junior at California State University, East Bay, Kartik is the trailblazer of his family as a first-generation college

student. Majoring in Computer Engineering with a Minor in Computer Science, Kartik is working part-time to help pay his

college tuition and is focused on graduating in the next year to pursue a career in engineering.

Promesa del Vecindario de Hayward

Residente Destacado: Kartik Autar

tercer año en California State University, East Bay.

A temprana
