In January our clinic received a request for a new patient enrollment – a patient meeting all the enroll- ment criteria: uninsured, limited income, residing in Cabarrus County, unmet health needs. But this person’s immediate health concerns could have been described as ‘outside of our scope of service’. The request was from Redeeming Joy Residential Home, the patient was a victim of human traffick- ing, and the unmet health needs were great. Our history with serving those with the most need and the fewest resources to meet those needs makes us ideal as a medical home. After one patient was seen, we realized this was a partnership that would succeed – and would serve a deserving population that was ‘slipping through the cracks’. We have received funding from Davidson College’s Learning by Giving Foundation to sponsor ten patients and to support our staff development with training in Trauma Focused Care. A second collaboration with Davidson College has brought Bruno Mourao, Da- vidson College Impact Fellow into the workforce of Community Free Clinic. Bruno is one of five Fellows placed in Free Clinics in the Charlotte Metro market. He began his 12 month assignment in July. His list of projects is long – support- ing our strategic planning process, developing a Patient Advisory Council, re- searching and developing a structure for a Community Health Worker program, and more. In addition to his work with CFC, Bruno will work collaboratively with the other Impact Fellows on a regional project. Bruno received his under- graduate degree in Biology and Neuroscience from Davidson this spring, he is pursuing medical school after his year as an Impact Fellow is completed. Bruno is originally from Lima, Peru and lives in the University Area.

Success in Partnership

There are many phrases to describe the benefits of partnership… ‘It takes a village to raise a child’,

African Proverb; ‘Many hands made light work’, John Haywood; ‘Alone we can do so little, together

we can do so much’, Helen Keller. All are true. We see the truth in partnership every day at the Com-

munity Free Clinic. Our partnerships are among our staff & volunteers, our donors & our patients, our

patients & our providers – and with you, our supporters, cheerleaders, friends and helpmates. Working

at the clinic we see the benefits every day and are grateful for the treasures that you bring to our clinic.

Some of our partnerships are as old as the clinic – thank you Laura Abernathy that you are true

to the commitment you made when we opened our doors in 1994. Some of our partnerships are new

this year. Below we highlight new community partnerships we have developed in 2017.

This spring our Community Free Clinic was a teaching laboratory for Cabarrus College of Health Sci-

ence’s Occupational Therapy students. The third Satur day of each month, the master student

candidates arrived at the clinic - rolled in supplies, equipment and papers and ‘converted’ our clinic

into an Occupational Therapy Clinic. Nine of our CFC pa-

tients were referred as teaching patients for four months. Our

Community Free Clinic has a long standing relationship with

the College. Nursing students have joined us as interns, as

volunteers and as supporters throughout our clinic’s history.

We were excited to expand that support and provide a learning

environment to aspiring OT students, expand the treatment

options for our patients and build strength with our profession-

al partners. Thank you Dr. Nancy Murphy and your first co-

hort of Occupational Therapy students.

In January our clinic received a request for a new patient enrollment – a patient meeting all the enroll-

ment criteria: uninsured, limited income, residing in Cabarrus County, unmet health needs. But this

person’s immediate health concerns could have been described as ‘outside of our scope of service’.

The request was from Redeeming Joy Residential Home, the patient was a victim of human traffick-

ing, and the unmet health needs were great. Our history with serving those with the most need and the

fewest resources to meet those needs makes us ideal as a medical home. After one patient was seen,

we realized this was a partnership that would succeed – and would serve a deserving population that

was ‘slipping through the cracks’. We have received funding from Davidson College’s Learning by

Giving Foundation to sponsor ten patients and to suppor t our staff development with training in

Trauma Focused Care.

A second collaboration with Davidson College has brought Bruno Mourao, Da-

vidson College Impact Fellow into the workforce of Community Free Clinic.

Bruno is one of five Fellows placed in Free Clinics in the Charlotte Metro market.

He began his 12 month assignment in July. His list of projects is long – support-

ing our strategic planning process, developing a Patient Advisory Council, re-

searching and developing a structure for a Community Health Worker program,

and more. In addition to his work with CFC, Bruno will work collaboratively

with the other Impact Fellows on a regional project. Bruno received his under-

graduate degree in Biology and Neuroscience from Davidson this spring, he is

pursuing medical school after his year as an Impact Fellow is completed. Bruno is originally from

Lima, Peru and lives in the University Area.

About those we serve...

Insulin Prices on the Rise

Overall the price of healthcare has increased tremendously, but the price of insulin is skyrocketing to the detriment of

those living with diabetes. Many with diabetes suffer due to the daily hassle of trying to make the right decisions for

their diabetes, but also because they simply cannot afford the medications that doctors prescribe. The cost of living

with this chronic illness is increasing; not being able to afford essential medications, such as insulin, causes more

complications to occur such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy, blindness, amputations of extremities, kidney prob-

lems, and ultimately death.

The rise in prices is due to more effective insulin formulations for patients. Despite the fact that the change in insulin

prices is clearly noticeable, it is not as clear that the insulin products are safer or more effective (Belluz, 2017). The

newer insulins are said to be much better for many diabetic patients, but if the patients who need these medications

can’t afford them what good does it do? There are currently three (3) drug companies that produce insulin. Without a

generic version of insulin on the market, insulin price will not be coming down any time soon.

UNCC Health Communications Intern, Cheyenne Zeiler interviewed one of our Community Free Clinic patients to

gain insight on the benefit our clinic has been for someone facing the challenges of diabetes. Cynthia L. is enrolled in

Cabarrus HealthNet and has been a patient of the Community Free Clinic for the past four years. She agreed to be

interviewed by Cheyenne. Cynthia shared that once she found out that she had been diagnosed with type II diabetes

she immediately sought help from the Clinic. She goes on to say that with the help of our clinic she has been able to

manage her diabetes very well. When asked how the Community Free Clinic has impacted her life, her response is

as follows, “They have helped me in so many ways with my diabetes, giving me the information I need, telling me

what to eat and how to manage”. Cynthia added, “I have a great relationship with everyone who works here. The

support that they give me to make sure I am doing right and that I have my insulin and needles is great. They ask

‘how you doing Cindy?’ and make sure that I have the right information about what to eat. It’s been wonderful and

the staff have been great!” Cynthia’s opinion of the clinic staff is that they know how to have fun but are professional

at the same time.

Cynthia is one of 184 Community Free Clinic patients with diabetes. In addition to receiving her medical care at the

Clinic, Cynthia’s insulin and supplies (needles, test strips, glucometer, etc.) are also provided to her. Without her

medications and supplies, managing her diabetes would be nearly impossible for Cynthia. When enrolled in Cabarrus

HealthNet, she was also enrolled in North Carolina MedAssist. Community Free Clinic is a Point of Entry Pharmacy

partner with NC MedAssist. Cynthia’s prescriptions are filled by NC MedAssist then shipped to our clinic pharmacy

at no charge to Cynthia. The insulin Cynthia requires will cost around $10,000 a year. Partnerships like ours with NC

MedAssist are how we ‘Keep Cabarrus Healthy’. Thank you Cheyenne Zeiler for your contribution to this story.

2016 Milestones at Community Free Clinic Exercise is Medicine data indicated that 380 patients are actively enrolled & 82% of

enrolled patients report an increase in physical activity.

Only 13% of diabetic patients had uncontrolled HbA1c (long-term blood sugar) levels

& 13% of patients diagnosed with hypertension had uncontrolled blood pressures.

Both special events, Heart to Heart Evening & Festival of Tables, exceeded all past

events in funds raised to “Keep People Healthy”.

Community Free Clinic was successful in the recruitment of volunteer physicians to

hold additional day clinics as well as continued Tuesday Evening Clinics staffed by vol-

unteer physicians.

Community Free Clinic was featured in a poster presentation at the American Society

of Health-System Pharmacists’ National Mid Year Conference on “Multi-Disciplinary

Clinical Approach to Improve Diabetic Patients’ HbA1c Levels”.

Community Free Clinic, CHS-NorthEast, Cabarrus Rowan Community Health Centers,

Community Care Plan of Southern Piedmont, & Cabarrus Health Alliance have created

a Cabarrus County Healthcare Safety Net work group to identify duplicated services,

unmet healthcare needs, best practices, & efficient & effective use of current re-

sources.

Community Free Clinic’s Board of Directors engaged in a twelve month organizational

strategic planning process to determine key priorities & goals.

Nancy Litton was hired as our first Deputy Executive Director to support current &

future leadership.
