have regarding programming choices for next year.
Course changes will be permitted during the week prior to school start up and during the first week of classes. Students will
receive their schedules in the mail in the summer. They are strongly encouraged to ensure that they are in the courses they
need to graduate. Students and parents should ensure courses enrolled meet the requirements for diploma completion,
scholarships, or any post-secondary plans. Students are encouraged to make course changes for the 2015-2016 school year
as soon as possible.
Post-secondary information is available for all interested students. Counsellors are available to explore future opportunities for
KEC students. Please make an appointment with your counsellor to discuss plans for your academic future.
Summer School information is now available in the Counselling Department or on the divisional website. A list of available
courses is available for students to take at the McLeod Education Centre, 530 McLeod Avenue. The course fees are $190.00
per course. The registration deadline for all classes is 4:00 pm, Monday, June 30th. All classes will be conducted in July.
Repeater students must have completed the course with a grade above 35% as verified by a report card. Instruction cannot
be provided for students who require modified or EAL programming. Please contact (204) 667-6193 for further information.
Additional information on Summer School options through other school divisions is available in the Counselling Department.
All the best to Mr. Matthew Opalko as he moves to the Counselling Department at Miles Mac Collegiate for next year. We also

The Technology-Enabled Learning Plan (TELP) is an exciting new initiative underway in RETSD designed to help students
strengthen their math skills and ensure investments in technology are well spent.
Today’s students have grown up in a digital world and it has impacted the way they think and learn. RETSD recognizes this.
While best teaching practices will always come first, the TELP is being rolled out over three years and will make technology an
integral part of the teaching and learning that goes on in math classes.
Focus Area 1 of TELP was launched in 2014-15 and saw iPads delivered to 97 grades 4 and 7 math classrooms so they could
be used for whole class, small group and individual instruction. Teachers received training on how to use the iPads and math
apps, and students were eager to begin using them.
In 2015-16, Focus Area 2 will see iPads introduced into grades 5 and 8 math classrooms and in Focus Area 3, coming in 2016-
17, grades 6 and 9 classrooms will receive their devices.
The TELP is a response to two of RETSD’s current educational priorities: -Enhancing student achievement through authentic
and appropriate mathematics instruction and Enhancing student achievement through investments in educational technology
as an integral and integrated teaching and learning resource.

Choir, Band, Jazz Band, Resonance and Guitar Ensemble performed their music to an awesome crowd! Musical highlights
from movies, jazz standards and contemporary music was featured, and students demonstrated their growth and success in
this year's courses throughout this celebration of musical learning. Congratulations to all the performers on a fantastic year of
Music Making!

PHOTOGRAPHY
The photography program has been busy with several photography opportunities. Students visited Robert Andrews to
photograph the cast of ‘Hairspray’ and KEC's drama production of ‘Cinderella and the Substitute Fairy Godmother’.
Four of our photographers ventured to Bernie Wolfe to capture the
fun learning session for females in trades at Sparking Interest. Our
division consultants visited our photography studio for individual
shots and a group photo of the team, this opportunity gives students
"real" client experience.
Most recently students have been experiencing the challenges and
joys of photography young children from the Young Parenting
Program.
Sunset, twilight, painting with light and star photography was only a
short list of topics investigated during our overnight camping
experience in Birds Hill. The students enjoyed this opportunity and
came back with firsthand experience which is immeasurable.
Students explored the exchange district to highlight the interesting
architecture and the vibe of a "happening" location. Later we visited Winnipeg's famous landmark The Forks. A day where rain
was expected turned into a photographers dream day with beautiful diffused lighting.
A highlight of the year is our annual Mock Wedding which is a
collaboration of several programs/courses at KEC. It was a
perfect day to get hitched. Please see more of our mock wed-
ding at: www.kecphotographytwo.blogspot.ca
Photographers have been involved in the Intergenerational
project “Life Journey". This project brought together students
from Valley Gardens Middle School, Hampstead School and
Bethania Mennonite Personal Care home. While the sharing
and placing of tile pieces for the mosaic sculpture took place,
photographers were right there to photograph the experience.
Art and Photography joined forces to highlight students work.
We invited family and friends to see firsthand the talent, skill
and abilities the students have showcased. A very deserving
sense of pride filled the display area. A visit to the Rescue shelter, and what proved to be icing on the cake was the interaction
with these animals, of course learning a unit on Pet Photography and shooting on location was also extremely valuable.
A delicious and healthy lunch was prepared for a food photography session using available light, it was a challenge not to eat
the props but student photographers managed to take excellent shots and after enjoyed their delicious salads.
Grade 12 students are working on their final portfolio, a collaboration of training, experience, skill and their own style they
have acquired over the years in the photography program. Please visit www.kecphotographytwo.blogspot.ca
Three students represented KEC at Skills Manitoba in the photography area. Carly Boomer-Gilley got 7th place, Sandra
Skorupski 6th and Birehanu Bishaw received a Gold medal. Bierhanu continued to Skills Canada in Saskatoon and won a
silver medal. We are very proud of all three of these accomplished photographers. We wish our grade 12's the very best in
your future endeavours! Continue to capture the beauty life has to offer!

A few of our KEC students took part in an
EARTH DAY activity taking advantage of
the nice weather and giving KEC’s back-
yard a ‘good cleaning’. Fun was had and
they did a great job keeping
‘Nature Natural’.
10 SEASONS OF REIVER FOOTBALL

our 10th season as part of the Winnipeg High School Football League. After a successful spring camp, we will begin our
main camp on Monday, August 24th at 3:00pm. If you are interesed, please contact Coach Hawkins.

KEY CLUB Four students from Kildonan-East Collegiate’s Key Club
got the chance to attend the Kiwanis Recognition dinner.
It was a night filled with inspiring messages and success
stories. We were joined by members of other school's Key
Clubs, Builders Clubs, K-Kids and Kiwanis Club members.
Also, many other familiar community faces were present
such as the MLA for Concordia, Matt Wiebe and the MLA
of Rossmere, Erna Braun. Each Club shared the events of
ir year and expressed what they had taken away from this
great experience. It was truly inspirational to hear all of
the good that is begin done at the hands of students.
It gives us motivation to continue with the Key Club efforts
in KEC and contribute as a school to these amazing
causes! Two of KEC's own, Hayley Hiemstra and Nicole
Singcay, received the 'Kiwanis Key Club award for out-
standing dedication and service' for going above and
beyond the call of duty in their roles as a member. Key
Club is a wonderful way to give back to our global commu-
nity and will continue to make its mark in KEC!
The KEC Guitar Showcase took place on Wednesday, June 10 at 7:00 pm at
the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain (CCFM). Once again it was an
awesome show and we got to hear some great performances!!
Thanks again to everyone that helped make the evening possible and in
particular to Mr. Cannizarro, Mr. Hamlin, Mrs. Greskiw, Mrs. Isaac-Martens,
Ms. Kowal, Mr. Kutka, Mrs. Resendes-Unger, and Mr. Witchert. There is no
way this event could happen without all of your support.
Coffeehouse
Congratulations to Mr.
Hamlin for another great
year of coffeehouse!
We will be starting up
again next year in
October, watch for
postings for exact times!

KEC STUDENTS VISIT EUROPE!
In late April and early May of this year 18 excited KEC students
headed to Europe! For 11 days, our students teamed up with
Miles Mac to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Victory in
Europe with visits to big cities and small villages across
England, France, and the Netherlands.
Some of our most emotional moments included meeting
veterans, spending time in WWI bunkers and the monument at
Vimy Ridge, visiting the Anne Frank House, parading through
the city of Wageningen which was liberated by Canadians, and
participating in a silent march which ended with students pay-
ing their respects at the grave of the soldiers each student
researched in preparation for the trip.
Our time abroad wasn’t all business though! We also visited
Buckingham Palace for the Changing of the Guard just a few
minutes after the birth of Princess Charlotte was announced,
were in awe of magical Harry Potter locations, saw La Jaconde
(you may know her as the Mona Lisa), learned about spies and code
breaking in WWII, climbed the Eiffel Tower, rode the London Eye, did a
bit of shopping, climbed around William the Conqueror’s castle, and
danced the nights away at local festivals and urban marketplaces… plus
a whole lot more!
Students Shifa Mohideen and
Morgan Holmstrom are entertained
by two veterans sharing some lighter
moments of life in war time Europe.
KEC students Dawson
Cox and Devon
Hemmett are given
the honour of carrying
our KEC banner
through the streets of
Wageningen, where
thousands of residents came out to commemorate the veterans
marching ahead of us. Seventy years ago to this day, the city
was liberated from occupation and Canadian forces began to
provide much needed humanitarian relief. Residents of this
Dutch town hold a special connection with Canadians, and many
began to sing “O’ Canada” as they saw us coming.
On May 13th, students from KEC attended the Manitoba
Construction Career Expo at the Ex Grounds. The Expo offered
students the opportunity to experience numerous careers in the
construction and manufacturing industries; such as carpentry,
masonry, sheet metal worker, electrician, plumber, roofer,
engineering, heavy equipment operator, and countless others.
Students from around the province had the opportunity to try
their hands at over 50 different careers and interact with
representatives from post-secondary training centres as well as
some of the largest employers in the province. A great day was
had by all!
GIRLS CLUB—Girls from the Kildonan-East Collegiate Girls
Club have been working with visual artist Denise Prefontaine
and teachers Angel Audrey and Deanna Michaleski on the
development of a public art installation titled “Life Journey”.
The intergenerational focus of the project chosen by the
Girls Club had
girls connecting
and sharing while
working on
placing tile for the
mosaic pieces of
the butterfly. The
collaboration of
students from
Kildonan-East Collegiate, Hampstead School, Valley Gardens Middle School and
seniors from Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home provided a wide range of
generational connections.
“Life Journey” features a series of sculptural elements which depict the stages of
growth and transformation a butterfly experiences during its dramatic life cycle.
The installation will be situated on the grassy bank alongside the Northeast
Pioneers Greenway (NPG), near Concordia Avenue. The support of NPG, Winnipeg
Parks Division, the Naturalist Service, and city councillors Jeff Browaty, Russ Wyatt and Jason Schreyer has been greatly
appreciated. The installation will take place in late September.

We care about the safety of our students and
staff, which is why RETSD is working with the
Winnipeg Police Service to review and
strengthen the practices we have in place to
ensure a safe learning and work environment.
As part of this process, we are reviewing our
current lockdown/hold and secure practices
and updating procedures pertaining to them.
The lockown/hold and secure procedures will
support Manitoba Education and Advanced
Learning’s requirement for schools to practise
lockdown at least once during each term or
semester, and they will complement other
safety policies already in place. Watch for more
information about the new lockdown/hold and
secure procedures on our website this fall.
The Life Skills classroom continues to volve as our students who are on indi-
vidualized programming keep on striving to reach their full Reiver potential.
At KEC a Reiver believes in achieving excellence, becoming a good citizen,
being respectful and responsible and showing safety towards themselves and
others. All of the goals and programming our students in the Life Skills
classroom work towards are based on these Reiver principles.
This year our students continued to become more inclusive in their school
envi-ronment. From being a part of many mainstream classes, such as:
Drama, Video Design, Dance, Carpentry, Science, Art, and Photography
classes, to being a part of a few extra-curricular activities, such as: the Pastry
Club and the Track and Field Team just to name a few. The Best Buddies
program contin-ues to develop in our school and this year we had an enrolment
of over 60 Bud-dies and Peer Buddies within the program. They met every
Wednesday at lunch, had a few special events and fundraisers and developed
some lasting friendships which we hope will continue even after graduation.
In each of these areas, our students and their peers were able to support one
another as they strived for their personal best.
Students on individualized program-
ming within the Life Skills classroom continued to work on their own individual goals
through academic classes such as: Cooking and Shopping Math classes, Grooming
and Healthy Living classes, Circles and Friendship classes, Gym class, Novel Study
and News 2 You
classes. These
were just a few of
the many classes
that our students
participated in to
help develop
their academic
skills, social
skills, communication skills and physical needs. They
continued to care for their classroom pets which consisted
of stick bugs, two frogs and butterflies.
The students’ love and appreciation for music continues to live on in the Life
Skills classroom as they develop their musical skills through Music Therapy individual and group sessions, Choral group
sessions, Move and Groove class and much more. The students were a part of the KEC Winter Music Concert, school
wide video to their favorite song, Gang of Rhythm and the KEC Guitar Showcase. However the highlight of the year continues
to be the Life Skills Spring Music Concert where this year one of our students was Master of Ceremonies, he introduced the
many acts and performances throughout the evening. The night was a wonderful display of our students’ musical talents
which they enjoyed sharing with their family and friends.

HAVE A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE
SUMMER!!
After 20 years of operation the Career Bridge
Program continues to grow and evolve. As well as
placing over 50 students in a number of various
work sites, Career Bridge organized the Grade 9
Take Our Kids to Work Day, facilitated the Grade 10
Career Cruising Program, connected students with
both paid and volunteer work experiences, and delivered resume and interview skills workshops to
Grade 12 students doing work experience through
their vocational programs. Each of these new
programs has allowed Career Bridge to enrich and
enhance the students’ career selection process.
With the support of the community, Career Bridge
was able to arrange cooperative education
placements for our students at Shoppers Drug Mart
Pharmacy, Ultimate Sport Cuts, the KEC Lifeskills
Program, Boston Pizza, Concordia Place and
Concordia Hospital, the Downtown Watch, Bethania
Personal Care Home, McLeod Veterinary Hospital,
Valley Gardens and Salisbury Morse Place Middle
Schools, John De Graff, Donwood, Winnipeg Sport
and Leisure, and various retail outlets among many
others. These placements enabled our students to
gain experience in a possible future career or area
of personal interest in high school that would not
normally be available to them until they completed
several years of post-secondary education. We were
truly excited for our students for undertaking this
unique training opportunity and career exploration
that enhanced their resumes, and created powerful
and important references for the future.
CAREER BRIDGE
