Run the machine and operate the machine forve minutes before you change the oil. This willsuspend any foreign particles that are present inthe oil. Running the machine will also provide amore accurate SOS analysis.2. Remove differential drain plug (1). The differentialdrain plug (1) is located on the back side of thedifferential case near the bottom. Remove thedrain plug for the axle gear reducer (3).Note: Drain the oil into a suitable container. Disposeof the used oil in an appropriate manner.3. Remove differential level/ll plug (2). Thedifferential level/ll plug (2) is located on the backright side of the differential case.4. Clean differential drain plug (1) and installdifferential drain plug (1). Clean the drain plug forthe axle gear reducer (3) and install the drain plugfor the axle gear reducer (3). Add the proper oilto the differential. Maintain the level of the oil tothe bottom of the hole for the differential level/llplug (2). Refer to the Operation and MaintenanceManual, Lubricant Viscosities and Capacities(Rell) section for more information.5. Disconnect the negative battery cable at thebattery.7. Disconnect the positive battery cable from thebattery.8. Remove the positive cable from the starter motor.9. Remove the cable that connects the two batteriestogether.10. Perform the necessary repairs. Replace thecables or the batteries, as needed.11. Reverse the above steps in order to reconnectthe batteries.12. Connect the battery cable at the batterydisconnect switch.13. Install the battery disconnect switch key.14. Install the battery compartment covers.15. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ONposition.i01909555Belts - Inspect/Adjust/ReplaceSMCS Code: 1357-025; 1357-040; 1357-510Your engine is equipped with a fan drive belt andwith accessory drive belts. Your engine is alsoequipped with an alternator belt. For maximumengine performance and maximum utilization of yourengine, inspect the belts for wear and for cracking.Check the belt tension. Adjust the belt tension inorder to minimize belt slippage. Belt slippage willdecrease the belt life. Belt slippage will also causepoor performance of the alternator and of any drivenequipment.If new belts are installed, recheck the belt adjustmentafter 30 minutes of operation. If two belts or more arerequired for an application, replace the belts in beltsets. If only one belt of a matched set is replaced, thenew belt will carry more load. This is due to the factthat the older belts are stretched. To check the belt tension, apply 110 N (25 lb)of force midway between the pulleys. Correctlyadjusted belts will deect 14 to 20 mm(1/2 to 3/4 inch).2. In order to adjust the alternator belt, loosenbracket bolt (2) and mounting bolt (1) on thealternator bracket.3. To achieve the correct adjustment, move thealternator inward or move the alternator outward,as required.4. Tighten mounting bolt (1) and bracket bolt (2).Air Conditioner Belt (If Equipped)1. Stop the engine in order to inspect the airconditioner belt.2. Inspect the condition of the air conditioner beltand the adjustment of the air conditioner belt. Theair conditioner belt should deect 14 to 20 mm(0.55 to 0.79 inch) under 110 N (25 lb) of force.3. Loosen compressor mounting bolts (3) and (4).Loosen compressor bracket mounting bolt (5).4. Move the compressor until the correct belt tensionis reached.5. Tighten compressor bracket mounting bolt (5).Tighten compressor mounting bolts (3) and (4).6. Recheck the belt deection. If the amount ofdeection is incorrect, repeat Step 3 to Step 5.7. Start the engine. If poor cooling is still experienced,turn off the air conditioner. Stop the engine. Notifyyour Caterpillar dealer for air conditioner systemservice.i01986269Cab Air Filter - Clean/Replace(If Equipped)SMCS Code: 7342-070; 7342-510The cab air lter is located to the left of the seat.g01039169Illustration 781. Remove two hand knobs (1).2. Remove cover (2).3. To remove the air lter, pull upward on the lter.4. Clean the air lter with a maximum of 200 kPa(30 psi).5. After you clean the air lter, inspect the air lter.If the air lter is damaged or badly contaminated,use a new air lter.6. Install the lter in the reverse order of the previoussteps.Purge Valves for the AirConditioning (If Equipped)g01029837Illustration 79The purge valves are located in rubber hoses underthe cab. There is a valve on the left side of themachine and there is a valve on the right side ofthe machine. Squeeze the rubber hose in order toremove any dirt or debris. The radiator and all linesto heaters or the engine contain hot coolant orsteam. Any contact can cause severe burns.Remove cooling system pressure cap slowly torelieve pressure only when engine is stopped andcooling system pressure cap is cool enough totouch with your bare hand.Do not attempt to tighten hose connections whenthe coolant is hot, the hose can come off causingburns.Cooling System Coolant Additive contains alkali.Avoid contact with skin and eyes.3. Slowly loosen radiator cap (2) and remove radiatorcap (2).4. Remove the cap for expansion tank (6).72 KEBU7519-08Maintenance SectionCooling System Coolant (ELC) - ChangeNOTICECare must be taken to ensure that uids are containedduring performance of inspection, maintenance, test-ing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared tocollect the uid with suitable containers before open-ing any compartment or disassembling any compo-nent containing uids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, CaterpillarTools and Shop Products Guide for tools and suppliessuitable to collect and contain uids on Caterpillarproducts.Dispose of all uids according to local regulations andmandates.5. Drain valve (4) is located on the bottom corner ofthe radiator. Remove bolts (1) in order to allowcooler (3) to swing forward. This will allow easieraccess to drain valve (4). Open drain valve (4).Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.6. Close drain valve (4). Move cooler (3) into positionand install bolts (1). Fill the radiator with a solutionwhich consists of clean water and of coolingsystem cleaner. Once the radiator is lled, ll thecooling system expansion tank to the full line.The concentration of the cooling system cleanerin the solution should be between 6 percent and10 percent.7. Install radiator cap (2) and the cap for theexpansion tank (6).8. Close the hood for the engine.9. Start the engine. Run the engine for 90 minutes.Stop the engine. Allow the cooling system to coolcompletely.10. Slowly loosen radiator cap (2) and removeradiator cap (2).11. Remove the cap for expansion tank (6).12. Remove bolts (1) in order to allow cooler (3) toswing forward. Drain the cleaning solution into asuitable container.13. While the engine is stopped, ush the system withwater. Flush the system until the draining wateris transparent.14. Move cooler (3) into position and install bolts (1).Close drain valve (4).NOTICEMixing Extended Life Coolant (ELC) with other prod-ucts reduces the effectiveness of the coolant andshortenscoolant life. UseonlyCaterpillar prod-ucts or commercial products that have passed theCaterpillar EC-1 specications for premixed or con-centrate coolants. Use only Caterpillar Extender withCaterpillar ELC. Failure to follow these recommenda-tions could result in the damage to cooling systemscomponents.If ELC cooling system contamination occurs, refer toOperation and Maintenance, Extended Life Coolant(ELC) under the topic ELC Cooling System Contam-ination.15. Add the coolant solution. See the following topics: Special Publication, SEBU6250, CaterpillarMachine Fluids Recommendations, CoolingSystem Specications Operation and Maintenance Manual, Capacities(Rell)Note: If you are using Caterpillar antifreeze, do notadd the supplemental coolant additive at this time.16. Start the engine. Run the engine without thecooling system pressure cap until the thermostatopens and the coolant level stabilizes.17. Completely ll the radiator.Note: The radiator must remain completely full inorder for the expansion tank to work properly.18. Replace radiator cap (2) if the gasket is damaged.Install radiator cap (2).19. Maintain the level of the coolant to the full lineon expansion tank (5).20. Install the cap for expansion tank (6).21. Keep the unused sampling bottles stored in plasticbags. Obtain coolant samples directly from the coolantsample port. You should not obtain the samplesfrom any other location. Keep the lids on empty sampling bottles until youare ready to collect the sample. Place the sample in the mailing tube immediatelyafter obtaining the sample in order to avoidcontamination. Never collect samples from expansion bottles. Replacethe water temperature regulator while the coolingsystem is completely drained.
