city limitscity limitsJuly 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013
The phrase “city limits” refers to the defined boundary of a city or town. In a formal sense, the city consists of government, properties,
and demographics.
Look closer.
You will see that those demographics are people. Those properties are
actually homes and local business that formneighborhoods. Within the city, there is a
community- Denton that grows, thrives and celebrates. Here is a look at the role Keep Denton Beautiful played in the community
this past year.

a word from the program managerAfter 11 years of living and working in this wonderful city, I feel confident in calling myself a “Dentonite.” Like many of you, I have been part of the Denton community long enough to see where it has been – and I am continually surprised and excited to see where it is going. At Keep Denton Beautiful (KDB), our volunteers, Board, staff, and supporters are at the forefront of Denton’s future, committed to making a better Denton - one project, one donation, one volunteer opportunity at a time. In my time as a volunteer, Board member, staff
member, and now Program Manager of KDB, I have felt privileged to witness first-hand the positive changes and improvements that can result from a team of like-minded individuals working together. Over the last year at KDB:
• Community volunteers invested more than 15,000 hours of their time in KDB programs and events, worth a dollar equivalent of $346,590;
• Our city’s urban forest was enhanced, one tree at a time, as KDB team members gave away more than 3,000 native and adapted trees to Denton citizens through the Tree GiveAway, NeighborWoods and Children’s Arbor Day programs;
• Great American Cleanup, Community Service, and Adopt-A-Spot volunteers removed more than 200,000 pounds of litter from the streets, waterways and public spaces of our community – enough to fill 7 garbage trucks or the same weight as 13 elephants!
These accomplishments speak volumes about the powerful changes that can come about when people get together in their neighborhoods and on their streets to make their small piece of Denton a better place to live, work and play. Every day, KDB neighbors, partners, and supporters imagine a clean, beautiful, vibrant Denton – and then work to make that vision a reality. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together in the coming year.
Sincerely,
Lauren Barker
president’s letterI began my relationship with Keep Denton Beautiful (KDB) in May 1999 when I joined the City as the KDB Program Coordinator. Since that time Denton has seen many changes—growth, annexations, development, re-development and a major increase in population. Throughout this evolution, KDB has been dedicated to working with community members, businesses, and the City to create the cleanest, greenest Denton possible.
When I first began working in Denton one of the most noticeable aes-thetic problems in the community was a prevalence of litter along many roadways. KDB has three programs (Adopt-a-Spot, the Community Service Program and, most recently, the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program) and one event (the Great American Cleanup) that focus on litter reduction and prevention.
On an annual basis, KDB performs a Litter Index Survey to assess the level of litter on streets, rights-of-way, in parks and on private property. This tool was developed by Keep America Beautiful and guides staff and volunteers in accurately assessing the level of litter in our community.
As I participated in the annual survey on August 1st, I and another long-time volunteer commented that the amount of litter seemed to have decreased over the past few years. The individual assessments of 9 people confirmed that feeling! The average litter index score for the past five years is 1.54. This ranking is on a scale of 1-4 with one representing no litter to small amounts of litter present and four representing a large amount of litter prevalent throughout the community.
This score is something for Denton to be proud of! It represents the tireless efforts of thousands of volunteers who participate in our program annually to make Denton a cleaner community. This year alone volunteers donated 10,276 hours to their community through KDB. Some of that time was spent removing 3 ½ tons of litter from Denton roadways and drainageways. It also represents the care that many residents and businesses take of their property.
And, although Denton is less littered than it was even a few years ago, we need to continue to work to maintain as litter-free a community as possible. Please consider volunteering in one of our litter reduction programs. At this time, we need adopters for several commonly-littered roadways such as Mingo, State School Road, Brinker and Hickory Creek. Adopters are groups made up of family members, friends, co-workers, church members, scout troops, sororities and fraternities, and social organizations.
We hope that your love for Denton will inspire you to join many of your fellow Dentonites to make our community the cleanest and greenest it can be!
Best regards,
Lancine Bentley

a trashy celebrationThe Denton Redbud Festival, one of KDB’s most beloved events, continues to grow and improve! This annual Arbor Day celebration got an Earth Day-inspired boost in 2013 with the addition of the TRASHion Fashion Show. The show featured local designers of all ages showcasing fashion made from materials that would normally be considered trash. More than 20 people signed up to participate in the show, which seeks to promote reuse, recycling and art. Entries included a dress made from plastic shopping bags and an ensemble composed of discarded coffee ground bags. The TRASHion program was presented by the City of Denton Solid Waste and Recycling department, the City of Denton Libraries, and SCRAP Denton, in partnership with KDB.
KDB looks forward to continuing our supporting role in this fun and educational program.
kitted outMany of KDB’s programs and events are of very long-standing. The past year saw the implementation of one of KDB’s first new programs in some time- the Garden Giveaway! Funded by a grant from Lowe’s Home Improvement and Keep America Beautiful, and supplemented by a sponsorship from Sustainable Denton, the program seeks to provide free container vegetable gardens to Denton citizens and families who are in need.
The premise is simple: participants receive a “garden kit” that consists of a self-watering container; soil; six vegetable plants; a watering can; a recipe book; and planting instructions. KDB provides participants with a brief educational workshop on the environmental, health and socioeconomic benefits of gardening. We strive to set our new gardeners up for success!
Since the first distribution cycle of the Garden Giveaway in September 2012, the program has provided a total of 175 new gardens for needy Denton residents.
in the loopIt has been five years since Keep Denton Beautiful won our fifth Governors’s Community Achievement Award (GCAA)- one of the most celebrated environmental and community improvement awards given statewide. The GCAA is the result of a partnership between Keep Texas Beautiful and the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT). It was created to recognize those communities that have exceptional environmental programs in the areas of education, public awareness, litter prevention, beautification, solid waste, illegal dumping enforcement, and community leadership. Winners of the GCAA receive a portion of $1 million in landscape funds, to be used for a landscaping project on a TXDOT roadway.
In 2008, the $155,000 om GCAA award funds received for Denton were designated for the then-recently widened South Loop 288. KDB assisted with plant selection, suggested drought-tolerant native species, and made recommendation to TXDOT to keep the overall design congruent with existing landscaping in the area. By mid-2011, the landscaping project was installed, with native, drought-tolerant plants featured predominantly in the design. However, even these hardy plants could not withstand the extreme drought conditions experienced in North Texas that year, and many of the plants died.
Over the last two years, with assistance from TXDOT and the City of Denton’s Parks and Recreation Department, the plantings slowly became more established and the overall condition of the project improved. Today, the plants are healthy and thriving- and this portion of Loop 288 has never looked better.
