LOGISTICS BID SUCCESS
A collaborative bid from St Helens College and Knowsley Community College to develop a £3 millionspecialist Logistics Academy has gained successful approval from Liverpool City Region’s Growth Deal fund.
The Academy, which has received support from key employers in the sector such as Wincanton, Stena Line and the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics, is set to open in 2016, co-located in Kirkby and St Helens.
It will change the face of provision for businesses and employers,providing a one stop shop for transport, distribution and supply chain management.
Anne Pryer, Principal of Knowsley Community College, said, “Logistics is central to the dynamic growth of the Liverpool City Region and our work with key employers in this sector is guiding the development of the Logistics Academy. Our aim is to provide a pipeline for professionals to the sector over the next 20-30 years. Theopportunities that this project presents to young people and adults cannot be underestimated and we believe that the Academy will be truly transformational in creating an employer-centred approach to skills development for logistics.”

The College has a strong history of studentsprogressing on to a wide range of careers with the force and the presentation of the award marked the start of a new year of activity for studentsinterested in RAF careers.

Knowsley Youth Mutual held their first Annual Member’sMeeting this autumn to celebrate their achievements since launching in 2014.
With over 180 guests, including 20 VIPs, the event organisers turned to Knowsley CommunityCollege to cater for the special debut event.
After being briefed to produce delicious canapés, the students decided to make a range of sweet and savoury mini bites, including Caesar salad naanbreads, goat’s cheese and caramelised onion tartlets, salmon mouse flatbreads, lemon posset tarts and strawberry macaroons.
The organisers from KYM were extremely pleased with the canapés and said that they went down brilliantly with the guests. Peter Boardman, of KYM, quoted;“We were delighted with the service that we received. Your catering team met our brief perfectly and the food was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance”.

STUDENTS SHINE WITH STARS OF STRICTLY
Performing Arts students from Knowsley Community College have been busy showcasing their talents across the region, as part of their internship with College partners, MD Productions. This year’s busy Halloween period saw students work alongside Strictly Come Dancing Professionals, Faliva Cacace and Vincent Simone, at a large corporate event in the city centre. Students were tasked with teachingthe choreography to the contestants, as well as partnering with them for theperformance and opening the show in a fantastic group dance.
Students have also fronted the recent Police campaign to raise awareness of the dangers and consequences of girls and women getting involved in gangs, but theirbusy schedule didn’t stop there; they were also involved in performances at weddings, community fundraisers and a range of other large corporate events in Liverpool city centre.
Carmel Clowes, the students’ tutor, explained “We are really proud of howprofessional and involved our students have been. They have been exposed toreal industry experience and truly thrived.”

HIGHER EDUCATION GRADUATION CEREMONY
Our Higher Education students have celebrated their hard work and dedication at an inspiring graduation ceremony.
Set in the stunning venue of Lord Derby’s Knowsley Hall, the event was attended by graduates from all areas including Sport’s Therapy,Accounting, Creative Mediaand IT.
Prior to the ceremony, guests were treated to live music from KCC students; Emily Deverau, Lauren Bewley and Shaun Hough, as well as an array of delicious cupcakescreated especially for the occasion by KCC Catering students.
The ceremony itself, whichtook place in the grand State Dining Room and featured keynote speaker Tony Jones, Landlife CEO, congratulated all studentsfor their achievements during their time at KCC.

Supported Learning students have been hard at work recently, with a range of exciting trips, charity fundraisers, and enterprise days.
Not only have groups such enjoyed sampling other cultures with Diwali celebrations, and gettingcreative with pumpkin carving,they’ve also raised money for the Royal British Legion andMake A Wish Foundation charities.
The students are currently going head to head with an enterprise market competition,check the next issue of KCC News to find out who the winning team will be!
STUDENTS CELEBRATEDIVERSITY FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH
October saw KCC students celebrate BlackHistory Month with a range of diversity focusedactivities including a poster competition. Learnerswere tasked with producing a poster campaignabout the person of black origin that they mostadmired, along with writing a short description asto why. Knowsley Ethnic Minority Support Groupeventually selected Jiordan Macpherson’s poster on Nelson Mandela as the overall winner. Congratulations to Jiordan and all who entered!

STUDENTS DO THEIRBIT FOR CHARITY
Knowsley Community College’s staff and students have been busy supporting a range of charities during our first term.
Supported Learning have been supporting a number of charities, including the Make A Wish Foundation and the Royal British Legion. They also chose to support Meningitis Now, selling hand-made ‘little bags of love’, and raising a fantastic £111.
Meanwhile, our Hair & Beauty departmentteamed up with our Catering & Hospitalitydepartment to take part in Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event, selling tasty cakes and confectionary to raise over £240!
Primary schools have also been taking partin our Christmas card competition, witha winning design featuring on the card,and proceeds going to Cash For Kids.
Congratulations to Leann Hagan and Christina O’Brien of Fountain’s Children Centre, who have recently completed their Children and Young Peoples Level 2 Qualification with Knowsley Community College.
After working as Volunteer Parent Champions at the Centre, the ladies enrolled onto the KCC apprenticeship and as a result of completing thecourse, were offered employment with the Centre.
Both students said that the course had given themextra confidence and were thrilled that they had successfully completed the qualification.

Principal Henrik Bendixen has made thejourney alongside six other tutors and students from NVPRO to share positiveteaching and learning strategies across the two countries.

SIGNING OF THE ARMEDFORCES COVENANT
Ahead of the remembrance and reflection of Armistice Day 2015, local representatives from the Armed Forces and Knowsley VIPs came together to pledge their commitment to The Royal Navy, Marines, Army and Air Force.
Taking place at Knowsley Community College, the event saw Knowsley representatives sign the Official Armed Forces Covenant, through which signatory organisations and any otheraffiliated local partners commit their knowledge, expertise and experienceto supporting members of the Armed Forces Community.
The Covenant was originally formed in 2012, through the borough’s Local Strategic Partnership to develop agreed priorities which provide support to in service and ex service personnel and their families across the areas of health and wellbeing, education, employment, safer communities and housing.
The event included speeches fromMadam Mayor, Councillor Edna Finneran, Lieutenant David Ashman and David Curtis of Everton in the Community, as well as live performances fromKCC Music students.
