Jazz scene comes alive at festBy NICOLE [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – Nate Steltonof North Aurora said he loves thespontaneity and improvisationthat creates the foundation of jazzmusic.

He stopped by The Office inSt. Charles to watch a friend’sband, the Andy Schlinder Duo,on Saturday afternoon as the citycelebrated its second annual St.Charles Jazz Weekend.

The St. Charles Jazz Weekendwas put on in association withthe St. Charles Arts Council All-City, All-Arts Event – Charlie’sCenter for the Arts – All Of TheArts, All Over Town.

“It’s great that St. Charles isdoing this,” Stelton said. “I wantto see more jazz being show-cased.”

Andy Schlinder, who playeda rare tenor saxophone from

1932 during his performance onSaturday, played with guitaristKevin Brown and an occasion-al stand-in, eighth-grader SamSchatz, who played the trombone.Schlinder said he always jumpsat the chance to include youngerplayers in performances.

“That’s part of the jazz tradi-tion – letting younger players in,”he said.

Schlinder, who grew up in St.Charles, said he was part of lastyear’s inaugural St. Charles JazzWeekend and noted that the festi-val has since grown. The numberof venues grew from four to eightbetween this year and last year, and 14 performances were sched-

uled at various downtown restau-rants from Thursday throughSunday.

“I think it’s been blossoming,”he said, adding that he would liketo see the festival expanded toLincoln Park in the future. “I likethe restaurant idea. There are alot more performers this year.”

Schlinder said he was particu-larly excited to see Chicago-bornand Grammy award winning sax-ophonist Frank Catalano on thisyear’s list of performers. He saidCatalano’s performances, pairedwith the fact that the St. CharlesJazz Weekend was advertised inChicago Jazz Magazine, showsthat the festival seems to be gain-ing credibility and momentum.

Stelton, who plays in a bandcalled Jazz Vertigo, said Catalanois a “top-shelf” Chicago artist.

“They drew some good talentto the area,” Stelton said. “I hopethey keep it up.”

ST. CHARLES – A bag-ful of books sat beside Mi-chelle Sottile as she sat onthe floor of a building at theKane County Fairgroundson Sunday morning, sortingthrough dozens of children’sbooks.

“I’m a homeschooler,”the Geneva resident said, explaining she was using theannual St. Peter Barn Sale asa way to stock her library.

The barn sale, whichbenefits St. Peter Churchin Geneva, was held Satur-day and Sunday. It featuredthousands of donated items, including antiques, books, china, glassware, furniture, clothes and toys. Whateverwasn’t sold would be donatedto various charities.

Sottile came to the saleboth days, she said. She goteverything she really wantedSaturday, she said, and shereturned Sunday to buy ex-tras.

“It’s a great cause,” shesaid.

By mid-morning Sunday, much of the inventory hadbeen picked over. For exam-ple, volunteer Lisa O’Leary-Volk said, about 65 to 70 per-cent of merchandise in thefurniture department soldSaturday, the toy depart-ment nearly sold out the firstday and the bicycles sold outwithin the first two hours.

Sunday, many depart-ments offered discountedprices or $5 bag deals as away to unload the rest of theinventory.

Dianne Denoon of Algon-quin said she and her twodaughters make it a point tohit up the Sunday sales. Foulweather, like Sunday’s rain, isn’t a deterrent, she said.

“We’ve always shown up.Always,” Denoon said, a redand white umbrella tuckedunder her arm.

I n d e e d , O ’ L e a r y - V o l ksaid, the rain didn’t keepshoppers away from the in-door sale.

“Rain hurts, but it’s nota deal breaker,” she said.“Bargain-hunters will comeout even in the rain.”

Batavia’s Nora McClure hits a return during Saturday’s St. Charles East Tournament.

Batavia has ball, doubles successBy KEVIN DRULEY

[email protected]

ST. CHARLES – Between keepingscore, calling around to other sites andultimately tending to everything else in-volved in coordinating the St. CharlesEast girls tennis tournament, Saintscoach Sena Drawer dispensed the fol-lowing advice Saturday afternoon:

“You have the time of your life outthere.”

She was addressing the combatantsin the fifth-place match at No. 1 singles, but Drawer’s words to Ava Kolmanof St. Francis and Emme Lindquist ofWheaton North might has well havebeen evergreen to the rest of the eight-team field.

Wonderful weather and a well-pacedmatch flow at East, St. Charles Northand Geneva served as backdrop as Na-perville Central edged Batavia, 57-51, forthe team title. Here’s a look at the Bull-dogs’ push, among other highlights forChronicle-area teams, including East(fourth), Geneva (sixth) and St. Francis(seventh):

Dogged doubles: Batavia capturedchampionships at No. 1 doubles (Ame-lia Cogan/Jenny Mizikar) and No. 3doubles (Caroline Lantz/Julianne Rob-inson) while earning three runner-up

finishes.East claimed the other two doubles

titles behind strong efforts from HaydynJones and Kelsie Roberton (No. 2) andKatie Downing and Kelly Rinker (No. 4).

Cogan and Mizikar assured they’dimprove on last season’s third-place runwith a 5-7, 6-4 (10-8) victory against theNaperville Central duo of Meaghan Be-digian and Sara Furukawa in the semi-finals.

“My heart started beating pretty fast,so I was a little nervous,” Mizikar said,“but I knew we could pull it off and getthe win.”

There was much less tension in the fi-nal, a 6-0, 6-2 sweep of Benet’s MargaretWilhelm and Katie Telford. Cogan andMizikar, paired for the third straightfall, yielded their only two games afterracing to a 5-0 edge in the second set.

“We were kind of just rolling through, and so it definitely was like, ‘All right. One more. We can do it. Let’s just get it,get it over with,’ ” Mizikar said.

Einck can see you: Geneva junior Kir-by Einck and Naperville Central soph-omore Tiffany Chen exchanged pleas-antries at the net after Chen’s 6-3, 6-2victory in the No. 1 singles final.

Moments later, Chen admitted “I seea lot of myself in Kirby,” who she de-feated in a tiebreaker during the teams’

Sept. 5 dual in Naperville. The analy-sis sounded about right to Einck as shequickly forms a friendly rivalry withChen, a fourth-place state finisher inher debut season last fall.

“I think we’re both aggressive. Welike to be the first ones to take the balland hit a winner or get the opponentoff their feet a little bit. So I would say, yeah, we have pretty similar games,”Einck said. “Steady, too, from the base-line. We don’t really like to go to the net, though, not too much. But we dominatethe baseline, for the most part.”

Einck, a four-match winner at statein 2012, lost just three games in heropening-round and semifinal victoriesSaturday.

“I’ve beat some really good players, and then I had a really good match withTiffany that Thursday [Sept. 5] and to-day,” Einck said. “So I’m pretty satis-fied with how the season’s going so far.”

Geneva’s Grace Krueger finishedthird at No. 2 singles for the Vikings’next-highest finish.

Spartan effort: The No. 3 doublestandem of seniors Annie Madigan andCaitlin Marron placed fourth to earn St.Francis’ highest finish. Four Spartansentries placed fifth, as St. Francis fin-ished one point behind Geneva for sixthplace, 32-31.

No matter what happens therest of the way, this is a win theSaints will be talking about for along, long time.Forever, probably.St. Charles North. Overtime. A

picture-perfect fall night. And Brannon Barry, the Saints’

biggest gun, making big playswhen they were needed to putEast over the top. It’s a win worth savoring for a

long time, and who knows, maybeit’s a win that will end up puttingthe Saints in position to win aconference title when it’s all saidand done.Of course, doing so will take

a Herculean effort the rest ofthe way considering the BataviaBulldogs are still playing football.Playing it awfully well, as Genevafound out Friday night. They say rivalry games bring out

the best in both teams, and oftenthat’s the case, but this Bata-via-Geneva 2013 was a mismatch.Too much Mike Moffatt, too

much Micah Coffey, too muchAnthony Scaccia and too manymistakes by a pretty talentedGeneva team. It’ll be interesting to see how

Geneva and North bounce backfrom emotional setbacks. Proba-bly a good thing that both teamsstep down in competition nextweek, but they’ve gotta keep theirheads up and get back on trackin a hurry. 1-2 is a scary place tobe.zKaneland looked slick as usual

way, way out west, but lookslike the Knights got banged upsome. Here’s hoping for a returnto health ASAP for a team that isplaying scary-good football.

ACC loses tight one on roadBy DENNIS D. [email protected]

ELMHURST – Aurora Cen-tral Catholic and IC CatholicPrep both came out trying toestablish a running game Sat-urday in the opening Subur-ban Christian Gold contest forboth teams, and not withoutgood reason.

Of the 11 passes the twoteams attempted in the secondhalf at Lewis Stadium, fourended in interceptions, includ-ing one that proved pivotal inIC Catholic’s 21-14 victory.

With the score tied at 7-allearly in the third quarter, ACC(2-1 overall, 0-1 SCC Gold) ap-peared to gain some momen-

tum when sophomore line-backer Sam Ariano ended theKnights’ opening drive of thehalf by picking off quarterbackJack Copher. But IC Catholicdefensive end Michael Perronechanged the complexion of thegame moments later when heintercepted a pass by ACC se-nior quarterback Kyle Reillyand returned it 37 yards for atouchdown.

“When your defense is com-ing up with big stops for youand you can’t take advantageof it, that’s ultimately what’sgoing to be the costly deal,”Chargers’ coach Brian Caseysaid. “Give credit to IC. Theirkids made plays.”

Perrone said after the game

all he was trying to do on theplay was to bat the ball down.

“I went up and stuck up myhands and came down with it,”he said. “The guy who tried toblock me was off me … so I keptrunning and got in the endzone and looked around like,‘Where’s the flag?’ I couldn’tbelieve I was there.”

Another interception ledto another touchdown for theKnights early in the fourthquarter. Randy Leslie gath-ered in a deflected pass thrownby Matt Schaefer and returnedit 66 yards to the Chargers’4-yard line. From there, Co-pher hit Max Eichhorn in theleft flat for a touchdown thatput IC Catholic up, 21-7.

Condolences to old friend

are better late than neverDear Abby: My boyfriend

of four years, “Joey,” is akind and loving person.Recently the father of one ofhis close childhood friendsdied.

We live a plane rideaway, and Joey could notget time off work to attendthe services.

I assumed Joey called hisfriend and family to extendhis sympathies. Duringour last visit home, I foundout he had not reachedout to them. I’m upset thathe didn’t, and I know thefriend was deeply hurt by it.

At this point, what canJoey do to make thingsright? Why wouldn’t hemake the call in the firstplace? – Smoothing It OverIn San Antonio

Dear Smoothing It Over:Joey may not have reachedout because he didn’t knowwhat to do, which wouldhave been to call and extendhis condolences or send acard or handwritten note.

He may have procras-tinated because he didn’tknow what to say and wasafraid he’d say the wrongthing.

The way to fix thiswould be for Joey to pickup the phone, apologize tohis friend for not callingsooner, and confess that heknows he was wrong for notdoing so. All he needs to sayafter that is that he’s sorryfor his friend’s loss, whichhe knows must have beenpainful. Then he should bequiet and listen.

Dear Abby: My daughter-in-law allows her 2-year-olddaughter to run aroundnaked before bath time andat other times.

They have been visitingus, and there are also otherpeople in the house andyard. The child’s mom tellsher to say, “Look at thesebuns!” and laughs.

We feel this is inappro-priate and dangerous. Howcan we get through to herthat it’s not right? – Con-cerned Grandma In EauClaire, Wis.

Dear Grandma: While Idon’t think that allowing achild to run around nude

at home is dangerous, Ido agree that encouraginga child to run naked andsay, “Look at these buns!”is unwise. The response itbrings (“Ha, ha, ha – isn’tshe cute!”) teaches the littlegirl that this is a way toget attention. While thismay be amusing at 2, it issetting a pattern that willattract the wrong kind ofattention when she is 4, 5 or6. Envision her mooning thefirst-grade class! Perhapsyou can make your daugh-ter-in-law understand byshowing her this column. Icertainly hope so.

Dear Abby: I am an asex-ual college student witha question about dating. When should I tell some-one that I’m asexual? I’mnot really “out” – mostlybecause I don’t feel the needto talk about it – but I’mnot ashamed of it, either. What do you think? – NewEngland “Ace”

Dear Ace: I see no rea-son to announce it at afirst meeting because it’snobody’s business. Thetime to tell someone you areasexual is after you havegotten to know the personwell enough to be comfort-able sharing information.

In case you don’t real-ize it, you are not the onlyasexual person out there.Because there’s so muchemphasis on sex and sexualorientation in our society,it might help you to knowthat an organization existswhich enables asexuals toconnect with each other.

It’s the Asexual Visibili-ty and Education Network(AVEN), and you can find iton the Internet at asexuali-ty.org.

Two eggs arebetter than one

BRIDGE by Phillip Alder

Andrew Carnegie said, “Theway to become rich is to put allyour eggs in one basket and thenwatch that basket.”

That certainly swims againstmodern thinking that recom-mends diversifying. At the bridgetable, sometimes you have todecide between two strains. Ifyour choice is between a suit andno-trump, why might you pickone over the other?

Having a trump suit givesyou more control. But if it breaksbadly, there might be no way torecover. In no-trump you mayhave an alternative source oftricks that will allow you to gethome.

In today’s deal, South went forsix no-trump, not for fear of a badspade split, but to protect his clubholding from an attack by East’sopening lead. Obviously, Southdid not know that his partner hadthe queen.

How should South play in sixno-trump? West leads the club10. East wins with his ace andreturns a club.

Here, if South had put hispartner into six spades and Easthad led the club ace, North wouldhave had to guess the trump suitcorrectly. In six no-trump, declar-er, after losing the first trick, had10 top tricks. His first thoughtwas to try to run the spades. And the percentage play was tocash his king, then to play low todummy’s ace. Here, luck was out. What now?

South had to take fourdiamond tricks. So he called fordummy’s 10. If East had playedlow, it would have been easy. ButEast covered. South won withhis ace, led a heart to dummy’squeen and played a diamond tohis eight. The second egg did notcrack, so the slam was made.
