WELCOME FROM AFL

Welcome to the 2012 Youth AFL Oceania Cup.

The Oceania Cup will play a vital role in showcasing the many talented players in our great game and more importantly, highlight the development and growth of football throughout Asia Pacific.

In our fourth year of the tournament we are excited to welcome the participation of teams and players from Fiji, Nauru, Tonga, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. The expansion of the Pacific Talent Pathway has seen both PNG and NZ being placed directly into the South Pacific Cup.

The tournament is a major part of our International Talent Pathway which now encompasses the opportunity for boys of 15-23 years of age to fulfil their opportunity to play AFL at the highest level.

Beginning with the opportunity to be selected for your country in the Oceania Cup, each player is then considered for selection in the U16 Oceania Squad, to compete against PNG and NZ in the South Pacific Cup in Townsville in April 2013, and for selection in the South Pacific team which will compete in the 2013 NAB AFL Under 16 Championships in NSW. Ultimately, AFL Clubs now have the capacity to offer up to 128 International Scholarships which provides each player an opportunity to reach the highest level.

The expansion of each nations’ development, talent and participation programs will only strengthen this pathway.

We have also included a Staff and Volunteer Coaching and Administration Workshop to assist our people on the ground in each country. We look forward to providing ongoing assistance to all our field umpires, as well as creating opportunities for all teams to experience boundary and goal umpiring.

The AFL Talent Pathway has also endorsed this tournament with an AFL Testing Combine being held for all our squads.

We sincerely thank AFL Fiji for hosting the carnival and wish all players and officials the best of luck for a successful week.

AFL ASIA PACIFIC - RISING STARS

Gideon Simon

Kevin Sheehan says: “A strongly built small midfielder who has good speed and outstanding lateral movement in traffic. He has good awareness and decision making skills and is a neat right foot kick. Performed very strongly in the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships in 2011 before injury ended his campaign. A Richmond International Scholarship holder, he impressed all with his professionalism and diligence when spending two months with Richmond in the second half of this year playing matches with Coburg in the VFL.”

Kurt Heatherley

Kevin Sheehan says: “Tall defender who is extremely quick, agile and competitive. Has adapted to the AFL code rapidly this year after relocating from Hamilton (NZ) to Caulfield Grammar where he studies and continues to learn the finer points of the game. Was one of New Zealand’s eye catching players when he played the Australian Under 17 team in Wellington (NZ) in January this year. Has been impressive in defence for the Sandringham Dragons since debuting late in the year in the TAC Cup, after having a background in basketball, rugby and cricket in New Zealand. A current Hawthorn Scholarship Holder.”
