Annus Domini 1340 Boleslao Russiae gubernatore veneno extincto, Kazimirus Rex Poloniae civitates Leopoliensem et Wladimiriensem vi capit, castrisque demolitis, illas praesidio firmat . . . .

The year 1340. After the poisoning of the ruler ofRus' Boleslav5, the Polish

king Kazimir seizes the cities of Lviv and Volodymyr by force and after destroying the castles [found] within them, plants a heavily armed army there .... After learning of his [Boleslav's] death, the Polish king Kazimir assembles an army composed of his retinue and nobles, hurriedly bursts into Rus' the Sunday after Easter6

and surrounds the city ofLviv. For a certain time the inhabitants ofLviv withstood the siege, but overpowered at last by starvation together with the chosen [eminent] men of Rus' who at that time were defending the High and Low Castles with them, sent their entrusted envoys to the king with the message that they are ready to surrender provided that the king gives his word that he will not violate their true faith. However, he agreed to this condition, (for indeed he knew that if he would not agree, then the Ruthenians would endure the siege tenaciously and would defend themselves to the very end) [Upon receiving his agreement], they opened the gates and let the king in with his army, surrendered both castles and took an oath of fealty and obedience. After the occupation of the castles [Kazimir] took away treasures of great value found in the castles which from olden times had belonged to the Ruthenian princes - gold, silver, pearls, precious stones and jewels- in particular two crosses made of gold, two crowns adorned with precious stones as well as a canopy and very exquisite throne, adorned with gold and precious stones.
