Letter From The Publisher Fall is upon us! As cooler weather ushers in a new season, we look forward to festivals geared toward families. Check out our calendar of local festivities and have fun! Three-year-old Raelyn Cutbirth is on our cover this issue. Please join us in supporting her battle against cancer. There has never been a little girl so full of sunshine and smiles, even while in the grip of a terrible disease. Read ahead for ways to help her toward a future free of cancer. What a treat it is to feature Dave Coulier, who we all know and love from the sitcom Full House. His “Clean Guys of Comedy” recently
aired at the Katy Cinemark in an initiative to bring a cleaner version comedy to America. This past summer a group of Katy teen missionaries traveled to South Africa with Westland Baptist and Creekside Community Church to serve the AIDS orphans of Bulembu, Swazi-land. We report on their adventures and what the trip meant to the community. We are pleased to feature attorney and author Melanie Bragg, whose debut novel Crosstown Park will be available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. This crime drama has an underlying spiritual theme with a glowing review by Jack Canfield of the famed Chicken Soup for the Soul series. We also feature the teen volunteer opportunities that await at Morning Glory Ranch, a facil-ity that offers equestrian therapy to the special needs community. Volunteering builds char-acter (and resumes). Katyites are also invited to the upcoming Morning Glory Ranch Annual Gala themed toward the Roaring ‘20’s. Speaking of teens, we include an article about the new movie, “I’m in Love with a Church Girl,” which is a redemption tale that just might appeal (and change the hearts of) teens. Bill Kneer, our political columnist, weighs in on the abortion debate with a strong 8th Amendment argument and extremely graphic description of what abortion entails — in “lay-man’s terms.” The abortion crisis is so important that we share his unvarnished article, and as Bill says, “Read with caution and a strong stomach.” We also feature a “combined” business and pastor profile and local student highlights, plus much more! Do you have a compelling story to share? If so, contact the editor at [email protected] for consideration. Onward to the Thanksgiving holidays! We wish the best of the fall season to all our readers and Christian advertisers.
May You Be Richly Blessed,Joseph R. Menslage

We all know and love Dave Coulier as the lead character Joey Gladstone in the late ‘80s through mid-‘90s ABC sitcom Full House. Chances are, you and your children watch the re-runs. He co-starred with (and
played zany best friend to) Bob Saget and has re-mained close to fellow castmates John Stamos, Jodie Sweetin, twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, and Candice Cameron. In fact, he introduced Candice to hockey player Valeri Bure, her future husband. In 1990 at the height of Full House ratings, Dave wore a “sec-ond hat” as host of ABC’s America’s Funniest People, a show featuring funny video clips of people caught in outrageous moments.
Up Close and Personal Dave loves his home state of Michigan and is the middle child of five born in St. Clair’s Lake. He was a funny kid, and later attended the all-boys Notre Dame High School. His sport has always been hockey (Full House fans have seen him wear a Red Wings jersey on the series), which led to his participation in the Celebrity All-Stars squad whose team has
included notables Jason Priestley, Matthew Perry, Alan Thicke, Mi-chael J. Fox, Michael Keaton and Richard Dean Anderson. His son Luc, a recent college graduate, also plays hockey and attended a Catholic all-boy’s high school just like his dad. As for the name Luc, Dave explains, “I wanted a Biblical name, and my mom is from Canada, so we went with the French Canadian spell-ing.” He caught some breaks early on in his career. Performing stand up in Detroit, he struck up a friend-ship with then-aspiring comedian Tim Allen, who went on to star in the sitcom Home Improvement. He grew up listening to George Carlin and Richard Pryor, but it was advice from Jay Leno that made an impression. “Jay saw me at a comedy club, and said, ‘Good,
clean stuff—you’ll work anywhere if you can work clean.’” Dave did just that and was invited to the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1987.

After Full House, Dave has stayed busy performing in comedy clubs across the nation, hosting on Animal Planet, co-starring in VH1’s Surreal Life, appearing on Nickelodeon, and making a cameo in the Even Stevens Movie, among other projects.
The Clean Guys of Comedy What you may not know is that Dave is at the forefront of the “clean comedy” movement. Families are the widest demographic in need of “clean” options. His goal is to deliver humor that doesn’t pander to (or depend on) coarse comedy to crack people up. This American stand-up comedian, impressionist, television actor, voice over artist and host stars in the big screen Clean Guys of Comedy, which debuted at the Katy Cinemark September 19 via a live streaming performance from a comedy club in Denver, Colorado. As Dave notes, “If you’ve been to a stand-up comedy show in the last few years, you know the trend is foul-mouthed and cringe inducing. Everybody likes to laugh, and we do too. We’re creat-ing a whole new, very big way for both top name and up-and-coming comedians to reach the world.”
But Don’t Mistake Stand Up for a Full House Episode When word got out that Dave Coulier’s stand up routine would be streamed live at the Cinemark, Katyites naturally asked, “Is it appropriate for my elementary student?” After all, Dave has legions of second (or third) generation fans who still watch Full House. His answer: Although it is the cleanest stand up show out there (PG-13), it really is up to parents to decide what younger children can handle. He compared it to a comment made Bill Cosby when they worked together back in the day: “I laughed because my dad laughed.” Dave, as well as comedians Jamie Kennedy, Ralph Harris, Andy
Hendrickson and Heather McDonald, all entertained the audience. Absent were the four-letter words, although the performance was definitely geared toward teens and grown ups.
Feedback from the Community Katy Christian Magazine promoted the Clean Guys of Com-edy event through social media in September, and a group of local fans won tickets and giggled through the show. It was a great way to spend a Thursday evening, and Paige Holsapple commented, “My daughters are in college, but grew up watching Full House. It was nice seeing Dave all grown up.” Christi Borden laughed out loud at the five comedy routines, but noted that audiences should be prepared for some adult themes minus the four-letter words (notably Heather McDonald’s act). Holly Chervnsik and her 3rd grade Full House fan, Nadia,
were there to see Dave—and he delivered! Nadia enjoys logging on to his website and listening to his G-rated children’s music and skits (and will be writing to him for his autograph). Of his website, Dave says, “It’s great for kids,” and he is happy to provide content for young audiences free of charge.
Connect with Dave! You can find Dave on Facebook at www.facebook.com/davecoulier.tv and on his website www.davecoulier.tv. His child-appropriate music and skits can be found at www.davecoulier.tv/freestuff.html. We thank him for the interview and his “clean comedy” initiatives!

Never before have we published a “double feature” about a pastor who is also a businessman. But the fact is, many pastors
from smaller churches operate professional businesses. Some have established careers well before attending Bible College. Senior pastor Adam Greer is a prime example. Greer was involved in the residential garage door business before he was called to ministry. He was never particularly religious, but says, “God and I connected in my own living room.” This radical life change occurred at a point when his marriage was in trouble and he was personally off track. “It was one of those life moments, so incredibly real. I surrendered to Him completely and never looked back,” he says. Within just weeks, everyone knew something was different, and it led to massive changes in his life. Not only did Greer get saved, but also started Bible College. He
and his wife Julie renewed their vows, got baptized, and dedicated their children to the Lord—all on their 7th wedding anniversary.

Next came many transitions. Before Greer had even graduated he was called into full time ministry as a lead staff member in Sacra-mento. He completed Bible College and eventually moved his family to upstate New York in 2002 to work with local churches. In 2006 the Greers moved to South Carolina to plant a church, and in 2011 they moved to Katy and joined Live Oaks Fellowship, which later changed its name to Awakened City Church. Greer is the lead pas-tor.
“We are a local expression of Christ, a body of believers awak-ened to the extravagantly intense love of God for us, seeking to live beyond the status quo,” says Greer. The congregation embraces the concept of God’s grace, which is encapsulated in the Gospel. “God wants you to know that He absolutely loves you. He’s not mad at you, nor is He disappointed with you. Because of His Son Jesus, we find acceptance and forgiveness in His sight and can experience the fullness of His extravagant love!”
The Greers are parents to grown children Ashley and Thomas. Thomas is married to April and has two children, and is also the worship leader at Awakened City Church. Ashley is expecting her first baby with husband David, who works in Greer at EZ Lift Ga-rage Doors, a BBB accredited business. “Restoring the image of the repairman, one satisfied customer at a time,” is the company motto of their family owned and operated business. Greer explains, “We specialize in residential garage door
restoration, which can save customers money.” Rather than upselling brand new systems, EZ Lift Garage Doors first seeks to repair garage doors whenever possible. When customers schedule a service appointment, they receive a free 25-point safety inspection. “We care for our congregation and our customers,” says Greer. “As we make a living, it has to be with legitimate integrity as believers.” Visit Awakened City Church at 22233 Katy Fwy. You may have heard of mobile mammography vans in the Houston area. This October, a groundbreaking option elevates the mobile mammography ex-perience for patients. Diagnostic radiologist and breast specialist
Dr. Daniel Roubein has launched Mammosafe—a unique mammography service on wheels.
A Radiologist On Board Nowhere else in the nation is there a mobile mammography unit with a radiologist on board. Dr. Roubein reads images in real time, which means patients are often able to receive a preliminary report before they leave the unit—known as Mobile Coach One. The term “mobile coach” more accurately de-scribes the aesthetic and functionality Mammosafe, which is light years advanced when compared to the typical mammography “van.” Mammosafe is fully equipped with top-of-the-line, cutting edge full field digital mammography equipment—the same equipment used in the biggest and most prestigious breast centers and universi-ties in the country. The information infrastructure is as high tech as it gets (truly a technological marvel), and Mammosafe is designed to be totally self-sufficient and capable of running as a completely independent unit. Best of all, it travels to patients at work sites, office complexes and businesses.
Amenities The waiting room, dressing room and exam room are comfort-able (some may say “luxurious”), and patients are escorted through
the payment, insurance and registration process by dedicated female radiology assistants and through the mammography procedure itself by compassionate, certified female radiologic technologists. Dr. Roubein personally operates the onboard imaging center, in which he evaluates results and consults with patients. Patient privacy, safety and peace of mind are paramount, as is the cutting edge technology used by Mammosafe. Best of all, the mobile coach comes directly to patients, generally to their places of work. Women over 40 should have a screening mammogram every year. In Harris County, only 29% of women over 40 (regardless socio-economic status) have had a mammogram in the past two years, so the mission of Mammosafe is to involve employers and make access both convenient and practical. While women are busy raising families and pursuing careers, they often put themselves last and do not take the time to schedule a mammogram—which can

involve missing many hours of work and spending half a day at the medical center or a clinic. The mobile Mammosafe coach saves time and makes it easier to tackle the once-a-year screening, which women need and deserve.
Life-Saving Services “Patients will notice that the mobile coach is very much like a traditional free standing breast imaging center,” says Dr. Roubein, “with the difference being that we are ‘on wheels’ and come to you.” The goal is to increase the number of women who receive life-saving mammograms.
About Dr. Roubein Many of our readers may already be familiar with Dr. Roubein, a beloved Houston area physician who has overseen the screenings of thousands of women, often saving lives through the detection of breast cancer. This October, we proudly feature him and his innovative mobile mammography coach in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month Dr. Roubein is an innovator, beginning his career as an academic
radiologist and clinical instructor, then continuing as a staff radiologist at a 400+ bed hospital in Southeast Texas where he became chairman of the De-partment of Radiology. Dr. Roubein recently launched Mammosafe to help women manage their breast healthcare. He and his wife are raising three sons, and he is involved in the community serving on various boards and with charitable foundations.
Spread Awareness!Be sure and spread the news. Share Mammosafe with your employer to see if they will coordinate a mobile mam-mography unit appearance for female workers. Visit www.mammosafe.com for contact details. We thank Dr. Roubein for making mammography more accessible and convenient to our readers.

Raelyn Cutbirth is an expert at smiles. She’s also a dog lover, queso thief, precious little girl… and cancer battler. On July 19th, 2012, just after her second birth-day, she became a patient at Texas
Children’s Hospital—which accepted her without health insurance. “Raelyn was diagnosed with very rare type of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma just after turning two,” says her mother, Jenni Cutbirth. She noticed that something was wrong with one side of Raelyn’s mouth, which was swelling at an alarming rate. Concerned, Jenni took her toddler to the doctor, never expecting to receive shocking and utterly devastating news.
A Cancer Diagnosis The family was in between health insurance coverage when doctors determined that a tumor was growing rapidly in Raelyn’s jaw. Worse, it could not be surgically removed. This left doctors few options, especially with a child this young. Generally, children under five are not ideal chemotherapy candidates, yet her doctors devised
a treatment plan. Raelyn would undergo 28 days of radiation and 11 months of 4 different chemotherapies. She came through her first day of chemo with flying colors, although she was a bit queasy. “Anytime someone walked into her room, she would smile and say, “Hi Doctor!” During the long months that followed, Raelyn’s parents, Jenni and David, missed an extraor-dinary amount of work to care for her. They pushed her in a scooter

throughout the hospital corridors and played dolls to pass the time. Sometimes Jenni napped with Raelyn in their hospital room—ex-hausted from the stress of long days spent in treatment and astro-nomical financial drain.
Prayer and Support Strong support flowed from family, friends and the community, who prayed that Raelynn would fully recover. But it was Raelyn, herself, who kept their spirits up. “It’s amazing that Raelyn remained happy and vibrant throughout her cancer treatments, even on trying days,” says her mother. Over the last year Raelyn has had some diffi-cult weeks with low counts, which kept her port from being accessed for chemotherapy. And when chemo could be administered, it caused nausea and vomiting. Raelyn suffered from a few terrible bouts of diaper rash. Special surprises helped. Raelyn was able to visit Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and ride the bus, which was exciting. Wil-lowbrook Build a Bear gave Raelyn a “chick” to stuff, dress and ac-company her to TCH during hospital procedures. Barker Lake Com-munity held a “Lemonade Stand to help Save Raelyn” and raised $1,000. Sometimes presents were waiting when she returned home from treatments, such as a Hello Kitty blanket and doll delivered by Donna Jantzen of The Kyrie Foundation. These and many additional kindnesses bolstered the family’s spirits. The Jersey Village High School Pals made a beautiful video about Raelyn and her fight against cancer, posted on the Facebook page for Relay for Life of Cy-Fair. Just recently the family’s car was had mechanical issues, and Northwest Chrysler Jeep Dodge donated
a vehicle to ensure Raelyn stayed safe and cool while on the road to her appointments. Raelyn has truly been an inspiration and has shown us all how to smile through our challenges. “Take that, cancer!” says Jenni. Thankfully, Raelyn’s last chemo treatment was June 5, although she still must make many trips to the hospital for ongoing treatment and is not “out of the woods” yet. Thankfully, she is now able to enjoy the company of other children (and her cat, Fluffy) and has restarted a ballet class a Cypress Elite Dance. The hair she lost has begun to grow again, and as a special treat she had it dyed pink. She loves anything outdoors, especially because her weak immune system had previously kept her house-or-hospital-bound.
Fundraisers and Community Involvement “It’s the little things in life that matter so much,” says Jenni, who has learned to live in the moment. In the midst of their crisis she finds time to “shout out” on Facebook the plights and causes of other young patients. She is always willing to support cancer-related causes. The community has stepped up to help Raelyn with fundraisers. She was chosen as the Miracle Child for the 2013 Ace Hardware Grill Off to be held October 19. ”100% of the proceeds will go to our local Children’s Miracle Network, which is Texas Children’s Hospital,” says Jenni. Everyone is invited to join Raelyn for BBQ at Cypress Ace Hardware and Feed at 11655 Jones Road, Houston. Donations can be made at any time at the store location.

The abortion debate will never cease... not as long as life is at stake. It is one of those life and death topics that polarizes political parties—with good reason. Some of us believe that once conceived, a baby is anchored with inalienable rights, and that human beings at any stage of life have personhood.
As more people are aware of what actually happens to a baby during an abortion, perhaps hearts will be changed. Many who support the “concept” of abortion know very little about abortion methods, which are sickening to fathom. It is undeniable that abor-tion takes a physical, emotional, and spiritual toll on women… but far worse are the consequences for babies: a gruesome, undeserved, cruel death. Fair warning: if you choose to read ahead, do so with caution. This article is quite graphic and requires a strong stomach. I peel away the clinical, sanitized medical terminology and reveal abortion for what it is: torture.
Keep Government out of Wombs?I believe it is possible to be pro-woman and anti-abortion. After all, how many females of all cultures and ethnicities are aborted each year? These girl babies are entitled to a future. They, too, deserve to grow into womanhood and enjoy the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
As far as the Left’s argument that “government has no place in the abortion debate,” many pro-life supporters absolutely disagree under the grounds of torture. There it is, the word “torture,” which so many pro-choice advocates ignore. Yet the Eighth Amendment clearly states, “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” So why are babies tortured to death, especially when the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled for the past century that torture is forbidden? Abortion is an excruciating death sentence forced upon helpless babies whose hearts are beating. These babies receive no anesthesia, no painkillers, no numbing agents… and if they were dogs or cats, PETA would be screaming about cruelty. These babies are alive and feel pain. Just ask the jurors at the Kermit Gosnell abortion trial. They know. And if you don’t believe or understand the tortures of abortion, read the following common methods of killing preborn babies. A simple search on the Internet will yield a lot of sanitized verbiage about abortion methods, so when you Google abortion, add “pro life” to your search to get a complete picture.
Methotrexate, Misoprostol, Mifepristone Also referred to as RU-486, the abortion pill, and Mifeprex. Mifepristone is most commonly used in the U.S. Methotrexate is a cancer drug that slows the growth of cancer cells. When used in abortion, it kills the baby’s cells and life-support system and causes death. Misoprostol stimulates contractions allowing the mother to expel the aborted baby, placenta and uterus lining.

Vacuum Aspiration / Dilation & Curettage (D & C): Terminates a pregnancy up to 16 weeks. The abortionist uses surgical tools to dismember the baby limb from limb (while alive), and suctions body parts through a cannula, along with amniotic fluid and placenta. Any remaining parts are scraped out of the uterus with a surgical instrument called a curette.
Induction Abortion A chemical “pickling” of the baby, in which salt water, urea, or potassium chloride is injected into the amniotic sac. The baby swal-lows and “breathes” this chemical cocktail and endures salt poison-ing, dehydration, brain hemorrhage and convulsions before dying in agony. Mothers report feeling frenzied movements as their babies react to the chemical scalding. This induction method has become less popular because, incredibly, some babies survive the process and are born hideously disfigured and clinging to life.
Dilation and Evacuation The D&E method of abortion is generally favored during the second trimester and up to 28 weeks. The baby’s arms and legs are dismembered, often causing the baby to bleed to death before the limbs are removed piece by piece. Medical textbooks and sworn court testimony describe how the abortionist pulls off the arms and legs, and crushes the skulls of larger babies so that fragments can pass through the cervix.
Dilation and Extraction—Partial Birth Abortion Performed after 21 weeks and up to full term. Also known as Intrauterine Cranial Decompression, D & X, and Intact D & X. Now “outlawed” in the US, there are exceptions. I found a Guttm-
acher Institute article dated September 2013 at www.guttmacher.org/statecenter/spibs/spib_BPBA.pdf which goes into details. Note that the Guttmacher Institute is perhaps best known for its former affiliation with and funding by Planned Parenthood. My description of the procedure: a viable preborn infant is de-livered, except for the head. This is because the baby is forced into a breach position and pulled feet first through the birth canal. The ba-by’s legs, torso and arms are “born” while the head is still in the birth canal. As long as the baby has not drawn a breath, the infant can be legally killed by scissors, which are used to cut the spinal chord. The baby’s arms and legs flail and spasm as the cut is inflicted. The scissor blades are then spread to create a gaping hole in the baby’s head, into which a tube is inserted to suction out the baby’s brains. Visit Human Life International (www.hli.org/cloning/201?task=view) for a layman’s version of the Partial Birth Abortion method, cited below: “An abortionist considering a D&X has two problems. He wants to abort a viable preborn baby of seven or eight month’s gestation who has an 80 percent chance of surviving birth. This baby’s muscles and cartilage have toughened to the point where it is virtually impos-sible to chop him or her apart without harming the mother. Since the baby is probably viable, the abortionist also faces the prospect of the “dreaded complication”— a live, crying newborn baby. Therefore, he must make sure the baby dies before he or she is fully “delivered.” He therefore uses forceps to twist one of the baby’s legs and pull it out through the birth canal. The ripping of muscles and breaking of bones causes the baby unspeakable agony, for even pro-abortion-ists acknowledge that seven-month and eight-month preborn babies definitely feel pain. Then the abortionist punctures the back of the baby’s head with sharp scissors and spreads the blades, tearing a mas-

Abortion Reform Over 54 million preborn lives have ended since Roe v. Wade. Even “Roe” (Norma McCorvey) has come out against abortion, re-gretting her part in the landmark case. Today, 1 in 4 pregnancies end in abortion. The National Pro-Life Alliance describes partial birth abortion as a “barbaric blot” on our nation’s history.” I call it fetal euthanasia and legal infanticide. In April 2007 the Supreme Court upheld the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003. The federal law includes no health exception, yet some states and many pro-choice groups lobby constantly to “work around” the federal ban. The recent debate in Austin gives hope to the pro-life move-ment in an ongoing fight by conservative lawmakers to ban abortion after 20 weeks gestation in Texas. No baby should be “fair game,” and stopping late term abortion is a moral mission. God bless the legisla-tors who respect life. I hope I’ve explained the urgency of abortion reform and the terrible toll taken on innocent babies. Much more at is at stake than a “woman’s right to choose.” Abortion is the murder of human be-ings. Those who defend it, defend unspeakable torture.

Salvation isn’t always a “pretty” process. Just ask pastor Galley Molina, the executive pro-ducer of the new motion feature, I’m in Love with a Church Girl. Movie goers may have al-ready seen the promotional posters at the local Katy Mills AMC, which has certainly sparked
interest in Christian circles.
A Redemption Story The PG rated movie debuts in theaters October 18 and is based on Molina’s true-life story, which includes a five-year stint behind bars for drug trafficking. His trajectory into crime was curtailed when he met a real life “church girl” — one of those “God moments” that helped develop his deep and abiding faith. “I’m in Love with a Church Girl is a powerful, inspiring story of a love between a man and a woman, a gift of second chances, and a family at home and in church that never stops praying and believ-ing,” says Molina. His character, Miles Montego, is played by Jeff “Ja Rule” Atkins, a well-known a hip-hop artist with four Grammy nominations and No. 1 hits with Ashanti and Jennifer Lopez. Who better to play the part of Molina than Ja Rule, who had a

brush with the law for gun trafficking and recently completed a two-year sentence for tax evasion. He was cast for the role while still in the midst of pending legal issues, reminding us of two spiritual truths: 1.) Jesus came to save the lost, and 2.) no one is beyond salva-tion. Ja Rule’s past film credits include “The Fast and the Furious,” and that his on-screen presence as a “thug” and “king of the streets” truly shows the struggles young men face when transitioning from a life of crime to a life of redemption.
An All Star Cast Teens will likely relate to the movie, thanks to a cast of recog-nizable talent. Adrienne Bailon, best known for her starring role in Disney’s 2002 The Cheetah Girls and The Cheetah Girls 2 movies, plays “the church girl”—Vanessa Leon. Her character is torn between her Christian beliefs and her emerging love for Miles. Mixed in are family dynamics and a test of faith as God continues to change Miles’ heart. She knows that in the midst of his spiritual journey he fears losing stature with his street friends and feels unworthy as he processes the death of his mother. He also faces federal charges, but it is Vanessa’s near-fatal car crash that brings Miles to his knees. He ultimately reconciles himself to God, although the path isn’t easy. Michael Madsen, Stephen Baldwin, Vincent Pastore, Toby Mac and T-Bone also star. Grammy Award-winner Israel Houghton collaborated with Molina in the dual role of executive producer of
the film and producer of the soundtrack. Molina met Houghton after becoming an ordained pastor and completely transforming his personal and professional life.
Reverence Gospel Media (RGM) I’m in Love with a Church Girl is a production of Molina’s company, Reverence Gospel Media (RGM), which creates “God-glorifying, life-impacting projects across the widest possible creative spectrum.” We applaud Molina for his focus on films of faith that meet people “where they are” in life. I’m in Love with a Church Girl teaches and preaches from the big screen, and may very well change the lives of teen audiences who face social pressures and temptations. It’s “come as you are” message is something that will also appeal to parents — both as a precautionary tale and a teachable moment.

We love to share good news about the youth in our community. What a delight it is to feature seven Katy teens who traveled to Bulembu, Swaziland this past summer. Our hats are off to these young missionaries! They departed Houston on July 8 with members of Creekside Community Church and Westland
Baptist and flew to Africa, then returned home July 23 after serving orphans and their caregivers who live in a region with zero popula-tion growth. An AIDS pandemic has decimated this part of Africa, leaving children parentless and homeless.
A Community of Blessings Although Swaziland faces a crisis, there is hope. Located several hours outside of Johannesburg, Bulembu is fast becoming a self-sustaining community that provides total care for these orphaned and vulnerable children. Bulembu is a not for-profit organization serving Jesus Christ by restoring hope to the people of Swaziland through community enterprise and community care. By building houses, painting, and tutoring, all of our Katy mis-sionaries (ranging in age from tweens to grandparents) made a differ-ence. This year, the goal was to build a climbing wall for the orphans—a project spearheaded by Ida Franklin of Venus Construction. Many Katyites found room in their suitcases to help transport bits and pieces of tools and parts, while others brought along extra bags filled with
shoes and school supplies. They also packed sweaters and hoodies, for it is cold in Bulembu at this time of year. In the midst of great need, the missionaries found themselves blessed by blessing others through hard work and fellowship.
Katy Teens Become Missionaries The Katy travelers stuck together and took care of each other during long flights back and forth across the Atlantic. With layovers, the trip took 17 hours one way. Most of the travelers fund-raised and worked extra hours to pay for airfare and the cost of the trip, including seven teens: Rachel Hakala, Emily Saxton, Cameron Morvant, Rachel

Solfronk, Kaitlyn McNair, Jami Douglas and Marshall Camp. Some flew with their church groups (but without their parents)—making this a trip of a lifetime half a world away from home. They arrived in Johannesburg, took in the sights, visited a game preserve filled with giraffes, lion cubs, cheetahs, ostriches and other indigenous animals, then left for Bulembu. This is where the Lord touched their lives in profound and humbling ways. “It really impacted me to see so many orphaned kids who are happy, cared for and grateful for everything,” says Emily Saxton, a 17-year-old Katy High senior. Most Katy teens have been raised in a world of technologi-cal gadgets, central heat and air, WiFi, paved roads and shopping malls. It was eye opening to realize that the basic necessities—food, medicine and shelter—mean so much to children who would otherwise perish. Emily and Rachel traveled together with the Creekside Community Church group, with Tina Hatcher acting as their surrogate mom and chaperone. “I look at their lives and I look at mine, and now I have a new perspective on what’s really important,” says Rachel.
A Life Changing Experience The orphans of Bulembu are fortunate, for not every child in the countryside is cared for. The mission is to build more homes to house
every parentless youngster (infants to teens), and it takes volunteers to expand the facilities in Bulembu. “Honestly, it was terrifying to allow my teenager to travel to a foreign land on the other side of the planet,”
says Emily’s mother. “But I saw Emily’s resolve and how she worked to raise money for the trip. I saw friends and total strangers, as well as some of my clients, donate toward the cost. A local Christian business, Bumbera’s Performance Associates, was especially supportive. And I realized Emily was in the best of hands with the Creekside group… and that every teen, including mine, should have the opportunity to serve as a missionary at least once.” Emily, Rachel and their fellow teen mis-sionaries returned home with life experiences they will never forget, mostly due to their love for the orphans, but also because some were unable to communicate with their parents for long stretches due to the lack of WiFi. They all “grew up” just a bit, but also grew in the Lord.
Taking the Step There are many opportunities to serve others at home and abroad. But if you are specifically interested in serving the orphans of Bulem-bu, check out www.bulembu.org. The mission trips are coordinated through Mission Discovery and participating churches throughout the country. You can also talk to Pastor Tim Douglas of Creekside Com-munity Church about the next trip, scheduled for 2015. Visit www.thecreekside.org or email [email protected].

By Dr. Dharmendra Verma
In our ongoing efforts to bring health and wellness new to our readers, Katy Christian Magazine is happy to feature an article by Dr. Dharmendra Verma. He addresses the topic of GERD and reflux, which affects many people in our community.
What is Heartburn or GERD? Heartburn or Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disease that occurs when stomach contents such as acid or occasionally, bile flows back (refluxes) into your food pipe (esophagus). The backwash of stomach contents irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes GERD symptoms and signs.
What causes GERD (Heartburn)? GERD is usually caused by a incompetency of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) at the end of esophagus (food pipe). In a healthy person, LES prevents stomach acid, duodenal bile, and gas-tric contents from traveling back into the esophagus where they can cause burning and inflammation of sensitive esophageal tissue. Many factors predispose and contribute to heartburn such as Hiatal hernia, obesity, increased gastric acid production and use of medications such as NSAIDS (Aleve, Motrin etc.) and certain other commonly used

medications
What are the symptoms of GERD? GERD usually is manifested by a sour or bitter liquid com-ing into the mouth (also known as “regurgitation” or “water brash”). Other less common symptoms are difficulty in swallowing or painful swallowing, chest pain, throat problems, such as laryngitis, sore throat, feeling of fullness in the throat, choking at night and altered voice. Infrequently, some rare symptoms may involve other organs such as the lungs, which might include wheezing, frequent pneumo-nia, damaged airways or chronic asthma. Except for occasional symptoms, recurrent or long term presence of any of the above mentioned symptoms may necessitate evaluation by your physician. Treatment of GERD is frequently in conjunction with gastroenterology subspecialist.
What is the treatment for my Heartburn (GERD)? Occasional GERD can be managed by lifestyle changes, elimi-nation of risk factors and over the counter antacids or short course of acid production blocking medications. More persistent or recurrent symptoms warrant evaluation for underlying etiology and specific treatment. Based on presence of underlying condition, medical and/or surgical interventions aimed at decreasing acid reflux and healing of the esophagus are instituted. These treatment plans not only help in alleviation of bothersome GERD symptoms, they also prevent long-
term complications such as peptic stricture. Long standing GERD also predisposes patients to certain pre-cancerous conditions, such as Barrett’s esophagus, which may warrant evaluation and management. Dr. Dharmendra Verma is a Board Certified Gastroenterologist with expertise in management of GERD and other esophageal disor-ders. His expertise also includes the treatment of colorectal diseases, colon cancer screening, management of liver disease and treatment of Hepatitis B and C. As a faculty member of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Dr Verma is conveniently providing patient care at UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch located at 23923 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, TX 77494. It’s always a pleasure to introduce Christian literature to our readers, and Crosstown Park is no exception. The author, Melanie Bragg, is a Houston lawyer and mediator who practices general civil law and has devoted her life to the representation of children, the elderly, and mentally disadvan-
taged people—all inspirations in her writing journey.
About Crosstown Park The idea for Bragg’s debut novel Crosstown Park came one day as she was driving back to Houston from a seminar in New Orleans. She saw an African-American man hitchhiking in a busi-ness suit and tie, which piqued her curiosity. As she fought the urge to give him a ride, some “what if ” questions emerged: What if he was a widowed retired teacher on his way to Houston to help some homeless children? What if they teamed up to help those children? The chance encounter inspired Bragg to write Crosstown Park. . The plot is based on Alex Stockton, a strong independent female character who spent her childhood in foster care and developed a passion for public service. Her impulsive decision to represent an accused foster home parent catapults her into an impossible trial… and her perfect record and judicial future depend upon the out-come.
Snapshot Synopsis Anyone who loves legal thrillers, lawyer issues, women’s issues, foster home and childcare issues, as well as spiritual issues, will enjoy Crosstown Park. The courtroom drama and investigation leading up to the trial is as compelling as it gets, filled with African American church themes and the spiritual journey of the main character, Alex, whose instincts take over as her own long buried childhood memories surface. She takes a difficult pro bono case and has just six weeks to discover what happened in Crosstown Park. Chicken Soup for the Soul series has given a glowing review: “This thriller and courtroom drama is a definite page turner and also deliv-ers a powerful message about the deeper meaning of life.” He alludes to the journey of the main character, who is up against a wall and “comes to the end of herself ” to tap into the great supernatural power of the Lord.“This is a crossover book, so it is both mainstream and Christian,” says Bragg. “I planned it that way because I wanted to reach everyone on their journey in the search for deeper meaning in life, which is universal. I love to point them toward Christ in their quest.”
About the Author Bragg was instilled by her parents with a love of books, movies and a belief that she could do anything she wanted in life. At seven she wrote The Story of My Life on her mother’s manual typewriter (in red ink, of course). It was only half a page, but it was a start. Books and her diary accompanied her through college and law school. They say, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” This is certainly the case for Bragg, who met the late Rita Gallagher, the co-founder of Romance Writers of America. Gallagher became a writing teacher, mentor, and good friend. Bragg continued to develop her craft and became involved in the American Bar Association Solo, Small Firm & General Practice Division as Chair of the Book Publi-cations Board.

We enjoy featuring or-ganizations that help others. At times, these organizations can make a dynamic impact on our youth. Morning Glory Ranch is an excellent ex-
ample. By providing therapeutic equine services to those in need, it also builds the character of teen volunteers. The words of founder Kim Russell, M.Ed express it best:
“Imagine a society that values young people for their present worth, not their future value. Envision com-munities where young people routinely make informed decisions of consequence — to neighborhoods, to schools, to the environment, that address issues such as race and violence — in short, decisions in aid of the greater good.”
Volunteering and Youth The benefits to teen volunteers are many, from the “extra” boost on college and job applications, to learning lifelong skills outside the classroom. But it also expands their understanding of the lives of others. It gives a new perspective on the world, and through volun-teering teenagers become more empathetic human beings.
Of course, the best benefit of volunteering is making a difference in the community. For teens, it is a feeling of “changing the world for the better.” And that’s where Morning Glory Ranch comes in. Their motto: What you do for yourself dies with you, but what you do for others lives on!
About Morning Glory Ranch Located in Hockley, Morning Glory Ranch uses the “magic” of horses and “taps” the talents of volunteers, who assist 32 special needs
children in individual, custom designed experiential equine therapy. Russell and the Board of Directors are always searching for the most innovative wellness initiatives that maximize the growth and devel-opment of these children and their families. “This has turned out to be a incredible marriage of therapies,” she says, and notes that it takes volunteers to make it happen. If your teen has a heart for volunteering (and likes horses),

Carol’s StoryI always thought I had a thyroid problem. Ever since the first set of symptoms started revealing themselves, which began right after the birth of our third child, I knew something was off. Exhaustion began to slowly creep up on me until it finally consumed me. It was draining. I have never experienced anything quite like it. No matter how many naps I took or how long I slept, it was still there. At first I blamed the fact that I was raising three children and holding down a full time job…who wouldn’t be exhausted? Then the next phase of symptoms began to roll in. I was cold all the time! It would be August in Texas and I’d be wearing a jacket to work. My hair and eyebrows began to thin out. Oh, and the brain fog. I honestly thought my memory loss was the first sign that I had Alzheimer’s. Over coffee with a friend, something I was consuming way too much of, I discussed with her what was happening to me. She said that it sounded like a thyroid issue, something I had always thought. Naturally, I went to my doctor, explained my symptoms and told him that I thought I was hypothyroid. He ran some tests, took blood work and scheduled my recheck. Two weeks later he told me that my blood work was normal. “But I don’t feel normal,” I told him. “Are you sure those results are right?” His answer was “yes,” and he offered me a prescription for an antidepressant. I told him, “No way!” While online, I stumbled upon the Hotze Health & Wellness Center website. It felt like it was written for me. I discovered that they used an innovative approach in diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism. I scheduled my appointment and was blown away by their professionalism. They explained to me that my symptoms were very common in women in my age group. They discovered that I had an imbalance in my female hormones that adversely affected my body’s ability to use thyroid hormones. I was prescribed bio-identical progesterone, estrogen and natural thyroid medication.
Within two months, my life was transformed. My energy was back. I can keep up with my kids, husband and job. My fading memory returned to normal and I was finally able to sleep soundly again. I got my life back! If this sounds like something you or someone you love has been experiencing, it’s not “all in your head” and you don’t have to just deal with it as a part of getting older.

Families First

By Melanie Saxton
Beloved State Representative Bill Callegari turned 72 in September and announced his retirement on his birthday. “My wife Ann, my four children, and my eleven grandchildren have been very patient and supportive dur-ing seven terms as I served the people of Katy, Cypress and Texas,” he says.
His current term expires in January 2015, culminating in 14 years of service. “It’s time to pass the torch.” Although his family has adjusted to his absences over the years, Callegari would like to spend more time with his loved ones. “Family is the most important thing any of us has,” he says. With several grandchildren in college, he looks forward to attending graduations and other family gatherings. For instance, his son Butch called him recently about the upcom-ing canonization of Pope John in Rome (scheduled for April 2014). Traveling to such personally meaningful events has always hinged on Callegari’s schedule and the demands of his political duties. But in the not-too-distant future, he’ll enjoy some well-de-served leisure time and will be free to visit people and places he holds dear. Callegari believes in the mission of the state founders, who envisioned citizen legislators going to Austin, representing their fellow citizens, and then returning home to live and work under the laws they helped pass. Throughout Callegari’s legislative career he has worked hard to keep families unburdened by the actions of state government.
As a Christian and lifelong Republican, he has fought for lower taxes, limited and efficient government, secure borders, and the conserva-tive values of faith, family, and freedom. He has also been recognized as pro-life leader and has authored or co-authored numerous pieces of pro-life legislation in the Texas House, including the landmark sonogram bill passed in 2011. He has been honored for his efforts in
defense of the sanctity of human life by numerous pro-life, pro-family organizations. “Serving in the Texas House of Representatives has been one of my great-est honors, and I thank the voters of District 132 for allowing me to be their voice in the state capitol,” he says. “I am proud of the work that we have accom-plished together on behalf
of the District, Harris County, and the State of Texas.” After retiring, he plans on remaining active in the Katy community. Prior to being elected to the Texas Legislature, Callegari was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Katy Independent School District. He also served as a Board Member of the Katy Chamber of Commerce and various other organizations, and was a two-time President of the Katy High School Booster Club. We wish Bill Callegari and his family continued blessings, and we join our readers in thanking him for his many years of devoted service.

The knot in my stomach began when the familiar but unfriendly question once again invaded our Holiday prepara-
tions: ”Are we with you or Mom this year for Thanksgiving?” Thoughts of school concerts, church celebrations, the upcoming Christmas Day “Shuffle,” and those awful-awkward photo ops with three parents and two kids, challenged my hopes of a more joy-filled season that year. Holidays have brought new stress and struggle to our step-family of six for years! Second families and the complexity that follows them is not a recent discov-ery. In fact, the Old Testament contains many of them and records the struggles that these families experience due to the “extras” second families create. Remind yourself of the trouble Abraham, Moses, and David suf-fered because of stepfamily complications! Regardless of your family structure, the tension or struggle in life is likely not going away.
Jesus clearly stated that struggles would be a part of choosing Him. It seems unproductive then to battle the struggle itself… maybe we need to consider how to struggle well? Holiday joy and celebration is certainly attainable within the second family system! It does require “extra” steps and considerations

that will allow you to struggle well. The suggestions listed below are taken from our experience as a stepfamily. Some were discovered post kiddos (all of our four have graduated) and some with great sweat equity during the early years. They have been truth for us and can have a positive impact on your holiday joy!Step-coupling Strength / No Wondering Relationship Rest in your love and commitment as a couple. Maintaining the oneness in your marriage will be paramount during the holidays as the focus is placed on your children. Choose to believe each other… adopt a “No Wondering” sense of trust and togetherness. The mar-riage relationship is always the foundation of a family; it may not always be the priority. This is the core principal that sustains and enables couples to struggle well!
Review Priorities Remind yourself that the holidays are a reflection of God’s grace and provision. Talk about Emanuel, God with us, often! Decide to make the children your priority. Filter your decisions to consider their emotion and struggle first, yours second. For example, it’s okay to compartmentalize in stepfamily life. Go shopping with your biological kiddos for the absent parent’s gift!
Plan, Organize, Negotiate Often, this gets overlooked or excused away. Communicate early and often with all the adults involved…begin now! Confirm every major decision with the other parent and negotiate for the children’s best interest. Always consider the bio-parents plans and extended family when dividing out time. Your children benefit from being in relationship with grandparents from all sides!Involve the TEAM There’s no room for secrets during the holidays when it comes to schedules or commitments for the family! Make every effort to communicate the “who, what, where, when, why” information to the whole family, and always use discernment and share appropriate de-tails only. Recognize the divided loyalties the children will be feeling and give them room to struggle. Keeping the hard issues in the light will lighten their load during the holiday “shuffles”.
Adjust Your Expectations The kids may not be exactly “thrilled” at the prospect of at-tending several Thanksgiving meals. At Christmas, they may not bounce and giggle under your tree when they have been at two other gift events earlier in the day. Resist the urge to take it personally… it’s not about you! Holiday celebrations are by very nature family orientated and will tend to magnify the fact that your family is not the same. It’s not the same. Be honest and truthful and embrace the struggle this statement brings… you may find your second family enjoying the time you do have this holiday season. God’s redemptive power was sufficient for Abraham, Moses, and David, and is still able to conquer stepfamily struggles today! Second family Holidays will be a challenge… I pray that you will be encour-aged and sustained as you struggle well together!

Are you up for a 10K, 5K, 1 Mile Kids Fun Run and 1 Mile Walk/Run? Advance registration is strongly encouraged for the Katy YMCA Turkey Dash—Katy’s most popular seasonal fun run! The Katy YMCA and The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch will host the 11th annual Turkey Dash presented by Reliant, an NRG com-pany on Thanksgiving morning, November 28, 2013. The race has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years to become Katy’s premiere fun run. Last year over 5,800 participants gathered on race morning to kick off their Holiday season by participating in the Turkey Dash, a 31% increase over the prior year. With four events to choose from, there’s something for everyone; a Kids Fun Run, a 10K, 5K and a 1 Mile Walk/Run. All races start on Peek Road near the Katy YMCA located at 22807 Westheimer Parkway, one block off the Grand Parkway in Cinco Ranch. The event was the brainchild of leaders from the Y and the church wishing to organize a large-scale holiday event to promote community bonding. Now the Turkey Dash is a well recognized, community Holiday kick off celebration which attracts thousands of participants from all parts of West Houston. Race day highlights include awards in age categories for the 10K and 5K. The post race party features door prizes, refreshments and games as well as a Kids Fun Zone complete with a rock wall, moon-

walks, games and more! Beth Strand, race coordinator says, “We have seen family par-ticipation grow over the past few years. Families creating memories is really what the Turkey Dash is all about. In addition to a great time, participants receive the satisfaction of knowing their race fees go toward a good cause, the YMCA Annual Campaign. This annual fundraiser ensures that Katy families have access to Y programs and services regardless of their ability to pay.” The Signature Spon-sor is Reliant, an NRG company and other lead sponsors include Grand Vision, Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus and DSS Security.
