Second Season | Rhode Island ‘02In her first season at the helm of the Drexel softball program Head Coach Kim Camara continuedher ascent as one of the rising stars in collegiate softball coaching. After taking over in September2006 as the seventh head coach in the program's history, Camara established a winning attitudefrom day one. Camara's Dragons responded, delivering her first collegiate coaching win, 13-8 overWestern Carolina on Feb. 23, 2007, just three games into the season.

From that point, Camara guided the team to its best start since 1990, going 8-4 through its first 12games including a five-game winning streak. Under Camara's tutelage, the 2007 Dragonsestablished themselves as one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the CAA. Drexel displayedits coach's never-say-die attitude by coming from behind in the final inning to win conferencegames against Delaware and Georgia State. The Dragons won both series and became the only CAAteam to sweep the Panthers, who advanced to the finals of the conference tournament.

When the dust settled on the 2007 season, the Dragons posted their best team batting average, hitmore home runs and drove in more runs than any other Drexel team in the program's history.Despite suffering through injuries that halved the team's pitching staff and outfield by mid-season, Camara's squad rallied itself and narrowly missed qualifying for the conferencetournament. The CAA recognized the Dragons' superlative offensive season and gritty performance

through conference play by honoring three Dragons with All-Conference distinction. Ashley Botelho earned CAA Co-Rookie of the Yearand Brianne Brown was named to the All-CAA Second Team. Botelho and freshman hurler Katrina Gaudier both made the All-RookieTeam as well.

Before coming to Drexel, Camara compiled a coaching and recruiting resume at UNC Wilmington that is nothing short of impressive. Sheplayed an integral role in the Seahawks rapid rise to success in the Colonial Athletic Association. With Camara's help the Seahawksearned their first berth in the CAA Tournament in 2006 after finishing in third place in just their third season of competition in theCAA. Camara was also instrumental in recruiting All-Conference First Team selections Ali Gardner and Carly Hughes, who led the CAA inhitting, in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Six other Seahawks, whom Camara helped to recruit, were also named to All-Conference teams in2006.

Her passion for softball and its intricacies developed as a four-year letterwinner at the University of Rhode Island from 1997 to 2000.She served as a team captain as a junior and a senior and earned the Field General Award during the 1999 season, as well as earning aspot on the All-Tournament Team at the UNC Triangle Classic. She graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and wenton to work as operations manager and instructor at Planet FastPitch in Uxbride, Mass.

Camara moved into the assistant coach position at UNC Wilmington in 2001 where she assumed responsibility for recruiting, organizingpractices, and game-day coaching. She worked primarily with pitchers and catchers and also instructed players in batting andbaserunning. Her work with the team was displayed prominently on the field in 2006 as the Seahawks led the CAA in batting average, slugging percentage and hits.

This season the Dragons are ready for take-off. The team loses just two starters from the 2007 squad and returns two all-conferenceplayers. Camara has instilled the players with a winning attitude and the core of returning Dragons are hungry for CAA Tournamentcompetition. With a healthy pitching staff this season, Camara's squad is poised to begin its ascent to becoming one of the elite teams inthe CAA.

Assistant Coach Lisa Wambold Second Season Hofstra ‘06Lisa Wambold joined the Drexelcoaching staff last season aftercompleting one of the mostsuccessful softball careers in recentCAA history. Wambold, who playedsecond base and outfield throughouther four-year career at Hofstra, was atwo-time All-Conference selectionand the 2005 CAA Player of the Year. That season she also earned a place

on the All Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team. Wambold was at theheart of a Pride team that dominated the conference during hertenure. In her sophomore season, Wambold was named the MostValuable Player of the CAA Tournament and she went on to leadthe Pride to conference tournament championships and NCAATournament berths in each of her four seasons with the team.

Wambold successfully transitioned from the field to the coachingbox as she used the techniques that helped her to become one ofthe CAA's most feared batters to make the Dragons into one ofthe conference's top offensive teams in 2007. With the help ofWambold, Drexel's hitters had the best team batting average(.305) in the program's history and also set single-season recordsfor RBIs. The Dragons offensive outburst was most evident thisyear when the team topped its single-season home run record bymid-season and went on to hit more than double the previousrecord with 28 homers this season.

Wambold wrapped up her playing career at Hofstra in 2006 andgraduated with degrees in elementary education and psychology. Her equally successful career in the classroom included a spot onthe 2005 CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team. TheHorsham, Pa. native returned to the Philadelphia area, bringingher passion for the game and winning attitude as valuable assetsto the Drexel coaching staff. Wambold will once again assistHead Coach Kim Camara with on-field coaching and recruiting, aswell as working with the infield and as a hitting coach.

Assistant Coach Krista Van Wert Second Season Drexel ‘06Now in her second season as anassistant on Kim Camara's staff,Krista Van Wert will help solidify theDragons' pitching staff and infieldthis season. Van Wert, a 2006 Drexelgraduate who returned to DrexelField last season as an assistantcoach, was one of Drexel's bestpitchers during her playing days.Van Wert and Camara worked

wonders with a Drexel pitching staff that suffered numerousinjuries last season, ensuring quality starting pitching that gavethe team a chance to win every game.

One of Coach Van Wert's greatest successes last season wasaiding the development of freshman hurler Katrina Gaudier whobecame the team's top starter by the end of the season andearned a place on the CAA All-Rookie team. Under Van Wert'stutelage, Gaudier issued the fewest walks of any starting pitcherin conference play and was named Drexel's Pitcher of the Year atseason's end.

During her playing career from 2002-05, Van Wert was one ofDrexel's top starters. Her best performance came during hersenior season when she posted an 11-6 record and helped theteam qualify for the conference tournament for the first timesince joining the CAA. She finished 10th in the nation with an0.84 earned-run average that year, was an All-Conferenceselection and named to the National Fastpitch CoachesAssociation's All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team.

In addition to pitching, Van Wert also played reliably at shortstopfor Drexel, posting a .948 fielding percentage and leading theteam in assists as a senior. She brings to the bench a tie toDrexel's proud softball tradition and a reminder of its resurgencein recent years.

Van Wert is a Yardley, Pa. native and she attended PennsburyHigh School. She graduated from Drexel with a degree in biology.

Over the past three seasons Drexel softball has beenstaking its claim as a contender for prominence in theColonial Athletic Association. Since qualifying for theconference tournament in 2005, the Dragons have been onthe cusp of a return to the elite four in the CAA. While theprogram's last tournament qualifying team was defined byits dominant pitching, Drexel squads of the last twoseasons have carved out their places among theconferences' top teams in offensive production. In 2007,the Dragons were one of just two teams in the conferenceto post a team batting average better than .300. The teamset new program marks for team batting, slugging, RBIsand home runs while proving it could compete withanyone in the batter's box. The most prominentcharacteristic of the '07 Dragons was not their prowesswith the bat, however, but rather their resiliency and willto win. The team suffered through a rash of injuries thatdecimated its pitching staff and significantly shortenedfirst-year Head Coach Kim Camara's bench by season'send. Rather than seeing this obstacle as an excuse toabandon the season, the Dragons took the challenge as anopportunity to achieve new heights.

The team swept CAA Tournament finalist Georgia State forthe first time ever, just days after losing its secondstarting pitcher of the season. The Dragons went on to winfour straight games including a run-rule victory over Ivy-League leader Penn. The Dragons grounded out winsthrough the final weeks of the season and managed tokeep themselves in contention for a tournament berthdespite being without the services of two All-Conferenceplayers for the majority of the season. With a healthy teamthis year, including All-Rookie pitcher Katrina Gaudier, Co-Rookie of the Year Ashley Botelho, and a well-stockedbullpen, the Dragons could have all the ingredients toclaim a spot among the class of the CAA.

Battery

After an injury-plagued 2007 season, the Dragons' bullpenis looking to bounce back this year. The team's stock ofhealthy and effective arms will likely be the determiningfactor in how far the Dragons go this season. Both ofDrexel's rookie pitchers impressed last season. BreannaGomez earned a spot in the rotation with strongperformances early in the year. She earned a two-hitvictory over Rutgers in her third start as a Dragon andwhen returning ace Ashlee Veilleux was put out ofcommission for the season, Gomez took her place at thetop of the rotation. She went on to post a 3-4 record and arespectable 3.10 ERA before injury ended her season. Ifshe can regain her form in 2008 and remain healthy shecould take over as the ace of Drexel's staff. Her fellowCalifornian classmate, Katrina Gaudier, picked up whereshe left off, taking over starting duties along with

sophomore Amanda Shattuck for the remainder of theseason. Gaudier proved to be one of the team's mostdurable players, making 20 starts and pitching 11complete games to lead the team. She was a three-timeconference Rookie of the Week, including back-to-backappointments on Feb. 19 and Feb. 26. Gaudier gave theDragons an immediate lift when the team needed it most. After injuries sidelined Gomez and team captain AmandaHastings, Gaudier pitched Drexel to sweeps againstGeorgia State and crosstown rival Penn. Against theQuakers, Gaudier threw a gem to earn the victory in gameone and hit her first career homeruns in a run-rule victoryin game two. Shattuck, who became an instant veteran inthe young bullpen did her part to steady the Dragons'rotation. She threw a two-hit victory at Maryland EasternShore with a career-high eight strikeouts and proved to beeffective in relief at the end of the season. Drexel's trio ofgamers will be boosted by the arm of newcomer EllenBoundy. The rookie hurler has had a great deal of successpitching in international competition and at the club levelin Canada. She will look to continue her winning ways onthe NCAA Div. I level at Drexel. Boundy and Drexel's youngpitchers will have the opportunity to develop with the helpof three talented catchers. Senior Victoria Hanks is a three-year veteran of international play as part of the BritishNational Team. She is a team leader on the bench andplays hard in whatever role she has been asked to handle.Senior Molly Dacey is a reliable backstop whose experiencebehind the plate makes her a perfect candidate to handle ayoung pitching staff. While Dacey has seen a lot of time atfirst base and as the designated player, she may be calledupon to resume her place in the battery. Primary catchingduties, however, will likely remain with the CAA's reigningCo-Rookie of the Year, Ashley Botelho. The Massachusettsproduct set a Drexel rookie record for slugging lastseason. She proved to be a fearless hitter, as well as one ofthe top defensive catchers in the conference. Botelhothrew out nearly half of would-be base stealers last seasonand was the team's leading hitter in conference play. Hercontinued success with the bat could help to replace theoffense of last year's seniors Brianne Brown and LenaAiken.

Outfield

The Dragons return every player from one of the topoutfields in the CAA last season. Drexel's three regularstarters committed just three errors all season. Juniorcenterfielder Lisa Williams is one of the most excitingplayers in the conference. Her speed, judgment andfearless play were exhibited last season on a host ofhighlight-reel catches. Williams superior play earned herthe team's Defensive MVP honor in 2007. Now in her thirdseason with the team, Williams is the catalyst for Drexel'soffense, as well as its top defensive playmaker. She led theDragons in runs scored and was the top base thief in theconference, safely swiping 18 bases on 19 attempts. Nextto Williams, in left field, is her classmate ChristinaRodriguez. As a sophomore last season, Rodriguez led allCAA outfielders in batting average and she was also thetop slugger for the Dragons. Rodriguez and Williamscombined to score nearly one-quarter of the team's runs.Senior Amanda Hastings will likely resume her post inright field after an injury-shortened junior season.Hastings, who was honored as an All-CAA rookie and aSecond Team member in her first two years in UniversityCity played in just 22 games last season. She did manageto hit .319, however, and is just a handful of hits awayfrom becoming the next member of Drexel's 100-hit club. When Hastings is in the lineup she gives the Dragons adangerous lefty who can hit near the top of the order andalso drive in runs. Jessica Bongiovanni and KatrinaGaudier also saw time in the outfield when Hastings wasinjured. Bongiovanni is a solid defensive outfielder whoreads the ball well. She also improved from the plate lastseason in a limited number of appearances. Gaudiershowed that she was athletic enough to transition toplaying the outfield when she wasn't pitching. She has agood bat and managed to drive in 11 runs in less than 80plate appearances.

Infield

This season Camara has the unenviable task of groomingtwo new infielders in positions that have been maintainedin large part by just two players over the past fourseasons. Brianne Brown and Lena Aiken locked up thirdbase and second base, respectively, since their freshmanseasons. This year a host of players could be auditioningto take their places on the infield dirt. Sophomore CarlaWaldron and newcomers Rachel Campbell, KatyHarrington and Kelly Downes will fill in the spaces vacatedby Lena Aiken and Brianne Brown at second and thirdbase. Waldron made several starts at second base lastseason and proved to be a solid fielder. She is alsodeveloping into a slap hitter and will give Camara anotheroption as a left-handed batter. Campbell is a local playerfrom Voorhees, N.J. where she was a two-time all-conference selection at Eastern High. Harrington was atwo-sport star in at Enloe High in Wendell, N.C. where shewas a pitcher and a shortstop. Downes, a South Plainfield,N.J. native, earned a spot on the team in the fall and willgive the team depth in the infield. The anchors of theinfield this season will be shortstop Kristen Beaver andfirst baseman Sandi Wambold. Beaver improved as a hitterthis season. Not only did she hit .369 with two home runsand 12 RBIs in only 65 at bats, but all but one of her RBIscame with two outs. She also exhibited excellent range atshortstop and committed just five errors all season.Wambold once again proved to be one of the Dragons' tophitters in the clutch as a sophomore. She improved herbatting average and was also third on the team in RBIs.Botelho and Dacey could also see time at third base as theseason progresses. Dacey split time between first base, catcher and designated player last year. She also put upsome of the best offensive numbers of any utility player inthe conference. Her 22 RBIs were second on the team andshe also hit a career-best .317 with four long balls.

The Schedule

Drexel opens its season at the Georgia SouthernTournament in Statesboro, Ga. on Feb. 15-17 beforeheading west to play in a tournament hosted by SantaClara University on Feb. 29. The Dragons home opener isslated for March 8 against Bucknell. Drexel will also playMarist, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia andparticipate in the Bash at the Beach Tournament hosted byDelaware State in non-conference play. UNC Wilmingtonwill visit Drexel to begin the Colonial Athletic Associationseason on the weekend of March 22. The team will alsowork in non-conference doubleheaders against Lafayette,St. Peter's, Saint Joseph's, Penn and La Salle throughoutthe course of the season. Drexel Co-OpOne of the trademarks of a Drexel education, since itsestablishment in 1919, has been the school’s co-operativeeducation program which gives students a chance to work in the“real world” as part of their college education. The onlymandatory co-operative education program in Pennsylvania andone of three in the United States, Drexel’s 88-year-old experientiallearning program is among the nation’s oldest and largest. Morethan 4,500 Drexel students are placed with 1,500 employerorganizations in the business, government, health care industryand education sectors in 42 states and 20 international locationsto fulfill their co-op requirements.Drexel’s co-op program was ranked among the nation’s top 10experiential-learning programs by U.S. News & World Report.

Student LifeMore than 160 student clubs, societies, and organizations bringlike-minded people together for social, professional, or serviceactivities. Our thriving fraternities and sororities have activeschedules and housing in Powelton Village. The John A.Daskalakis Athletic Center has a fully equipped wellness center, swimming pool, and basketball and squash courts. Varsity sportsteams, intramural sports, and club sports provide a multitude ofchances to play or cheer on a team. Want to explore things offcampus? You’re in luck. Philadelphia, the fifth largest city in thenation, has cultural, entertainment, historical, and recreationalopportunities for any taste.

PhiladelphiaThe city of Philadelphia offers Drexel students plenty of places tolearn, play, and experience the arts. Philadelphia encompassesFairmount Park, the largest urban park system in the country; ishome to hundreds of neighborhoods, each with its own distinctpersonality and attractions. There is something for everyone in“The City of Brotherly Love” from the zoo, to the art museum, majestic boathouse row to the city’s passionate sports culture.Drexel students can take advantage of Philadelphia’s manyattractions through region-specific courses (often including fieldtrips), a comprehensive transportation network, and Drexel’scampuses, which are all close to the heart of the city. If you dochoose to live on campus, you’ll have even more to look forwardto with residence hall-sponsored excursions and the dailyactivities that take you into Philadelphia’s neighborhoods andcommunities.

Moving AheadOne of the main reasons for Drexel’s recent innovation andexpansion is President Constantine Papadakis, Ph.D., who hasbeen the president of Drexel University since 1995. Sincebecoming president, Papadakis has seen undergraduateapplications, the endowment and co-op employers triple and full-time undergraduate enrollment, research funding, philanthropy, net assets and number of co-op students double.
