A group of leading Nepalese educationists and entrepreneurs have come together to establish a semi-residential school of an international standard in order to provide a high quality holistic education for boys and girls of five to nineteen years. Thus, Kathmandu World School (KWS) is being developed at Surya Binayak – 7, Gundu, Bhaktapur, a serene and peaceful location conducive to creating a unique learning environment. Located approximately 12 kilometers away from the noise and clamor of Kathmandu city, the school will provide a full–fledged high school programme from grades

I (One) to XII (Twelve) following the National Curriculum of Nepal and also the Cambridge International A Level programme under the Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE), University of Cambridge, UK. Academic programmes will begin from the Academic Session 2075 BS (April 2018). However, admissions will be open only for grades I (One) to V (Five) and grade XI (Eleven) for the Academic Session 2075 (2018 AD).

The school possesses world–class infrastructure supported by state–of–the–art facilities. The buildings

and facilities are spread over approximately 55 ropanis of land, endowed with abundant natural beauty. The school campus is bordered by lush green forested areas on the north, east and south and local residences on the west of the school. The first phase of construction will be completed by March 2018 while the entire project will be completed by February 2019. The school will have a total capacity of 1,200 students of which 400 students will reside in the school hostel once the school becomes fully operational.

HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT: CONNECTEDNESS OF MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT

When Plato wrote about education in The Republic, he proposed a holistic curriculum that requires a balance of training in physical education, the arts, math, science, character and moral judgment. Our school recognizes the connectedness of mind, body and spirit, and focuses on the balanced growth of the young learners. The healthy development of physical, social and emotional aspects is as essential as the development of the cognitive ability of a child. Besides striving for academic achievement, our curriculum emphasizes physical fitness, creativity and social service to lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits and positive social outlook.

VALUE-BASED EDUCATION

Our goal is to instill the eastern values of community spirit with the western values of individuality and independence in the minds of young learners. It is imperative that children learn how to be part of a community from an early age. This includes understanding their role in the community. They learn the value of interacting positively with peers, juniors and elders as well as how to be a proactive member of the classroom, school, community and society. Moral and conflict resolution lessons provide students with awareness, and impart skills to navigate relationships and negotiate through any conflict situations with other members of the community.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING: A HANDS-ON APPROACH TO LEARNING

The school encourages hands–on activities so that students are directly involved in creating and constructing effective learning experiences rather than being passive recipients of readymade content delivered through one–way lectures. Experiences, inside and outside the classrooms, are integrated with goals and objectives of the curriculum. Students are required to be actively engaged in posing questions, investigating, experimenting, problem–solving, assuming responsibilities, being creative and constructing meaning.

SERVICE LEARNING: CONNECTING CURRICULUM WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE

We encourage our students to appreciate their community and to contribute positively to society in general. One of our core values is “compassion” and students are given opportunities to learn the true essence of “giving”, be it in kind, time or effort. They will participate in charitable activities and programmes that serve not only the local community but also the wider national needs in various areas. Involvement in community service will thus supplement and meet curriculum objectives as well as impart organizational skills, teamwork and a sense of belonging.

PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT IN EDUCATION: A PROVEN FORMULA FOR SUCCESS

Children do well in their education when parents take active and consistent interest in their education. Parental engagement results in children getting better grades, having fewer discipline problems and are more likely to be successful in their lives. At KWS, parents are expected to be engaged throughout the academic year in the learning

activities of their children. KWS regularly communicates with our parents through email, parent–teacher meetings (PTM), notices, and SMIS (School Management Information System) to share with them information on school events and their child’s performance. The Parent–Teacher Association (PTA) of the school will work with the school team to enhance the children’s school experience, and foster closer relationship among parents, the faculty and wider school community.

In order to develop our teachers’ professional skills and update their knowledge on the latest teaching

and learning pedagogies, we will provide regular on-going professional development workshops and individualized training programs through the KWS Learning Centre to ensure quality in our teaching approaches.

The KWS Professional Development Centre will organize in–house trainings for our teachers every week to help them assess, reflect on and improve their current practices and to keep them abreast of the latest developments in education. We ensure our teachers inculcate a passion for learning new skills to enable them to nurture our students in the school in the best possible way.

LIBRARY

The library forms the core of our literacy programme and is the hub for all research and inquiry projects. We have two spacious and well–stocked libraries – one designed for elementary students (grades I–VIII) and one for secondary students (grades IX and above). Trained librarians, who are knowledgeable and experienced, manage the library.
