Product Identity Key Points

“Next Generation of Mesh Seating” – What does it mean?

“Contessa takes the popular office mesh chair to the next level. Contessa offers improved function, comfort, styling and materials over competitive seating – without any compromises. It’s a new seating experience.”

David Feldberg, President and CEO Design Story “Tess Mesh” Smart Operation

Ergonomics Design Story Giugiaro Design, whose founder’s industrial design work is reflected in Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Bugatti, Lamborghini, DeLorean, and Fiat, designed Contessa. Okamura Inc., one of Japan’s largest manufacturer’s of office furniture, engineered Contessa. Tess Mesh - Contessa utilizes two different mesh fabrics. - The Base and the Seat Mesh provide different tensions to support the body differently. (Herman Miller’s

Aeron treats the seat and back mesh tensions the same). - Mesh seating provides superior “thermal regulation” by allowing air to pass through the seat and cool the

body. Many high-end ergonomic chairs, such as Humanscale’s Freedom and Steelcase’s Leap, do not offer this feature.

- Contessa’s “Tess Mesh” is braided for a more comfortable feel, contrary to most mesh chairs, especially Herman Miller’s Aeron, which has a reputation for a tough feel that is damaging to clothes.

- “Tess Mesh” is an elastic piece-dyed fabric engineered to prevent color from fading. - The “Tess Mesh” was developed using a patented process – the generic mesh fibers were knitted with fabric.

While the mesh fiber provides the proper body support, the fabric offers the user a softer-to-the-touch feel. - Environmental story of “Tess Mesh”

Smart Operation Contessa’s “Smart Operation” allows the user to make quick and easy adjustments from the seated position. This allows for different users to easily customize the chair to meet their specific needs, and makes the chair incredibly comfortable over a long period of time. Ergonomics Based on a philosophy of what the body does in the chair, not what the chair does, the Contessa has a number of fundamental ergonomic benefits. - The non-mesh seat pan of the Contessa chair allows body movements. When the body is moving, it is

replenishing the fluids it needs to stay healthy. This is particularly important as it relates to the spine. - The armrest moves within the midline of the body to accommodate the height and sizes of all individuals,

more importantly, allows for the use of a keyboard tray in the primary zone. - The design of the back support, the unit posterior to the mesh, is an advantage in that the position of the

support forces movement of the transverse processes of the lumbar spine. This facilitates the feeding of the intervertebral disk.

- An ergonomic advantage to the Contessa chair is the ease of adjusting the armrest controls that manage height and tilt.

Features and Benefits Contessa Philosophy In 2003, Teknion introduced the Contessa chair. Contessa was designed by Giugiaro Design. Giugiaro Design is a highly respected Italian design firm that focuses on product and transport design, as well as architecture, graphics, communications, multi-media and design-a-porter. Giugiaro Design is a world-class design firm whose work is also reflected in Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Bugatti, Lamborghini, DeLorean, and Fiat. The intent of Contessa was to design a chair in the high end of the market that allowed users to sit comfortably and maintain proper postures. In addition, we wanted to make the function as intuitive as possible for the user. In a market that is populated with “ergonomic” chairs, Teknion has developed a chair that addresses ergonomics from a different perspective. There were 2 areas that were targeted.

1. What the chair does 2. How the body responds to the chair

The relationship between the chair and body is critical. Our research has shown that all chairs address the important and basic element of, “what the chair does”. The missing element is usually, “what happens to the user when they sit in the chair for extended periods of time”. Our primary goal was to design a chair that was intuitive, encouraging the user to more precisely adjust his/her chair, promoting proper posture and ergonomics. Criteria:

• Create a chair that displayed an openness and airy element to the constantly shrinking workstation • Make the chair easy to use, and bridge the gap between what users are comfortable doing and what

we ask them to do • Design a chair that helps the user sit healthier, avoiding the problems that can occur with long term

sitting postures • Use technology and engineering to create a holistic ergonomic solution • Meet the needs of both the 5th percentile female and the 95th percentile male workforce • Meet or exceed ANSI/BIFMA durability requirements as well as the ANSI/BIFMA G1 Ergonomic

guidelines

The first step was to determine how we could create a chair that encourages good posture and allows the body to remain healthy. We recognized that although many employers have a big picture approach to ergonomics, the fact is that 80% of the interaction a user has with the work environment is with the chair. That being said, we wanted to create a chair that gave the user the best advantage with this interaction and in turn provided the employer the best possible advantage in the overall approach to ergonomics.

5

How the body responds to the chair: The most important element is to address circulation. Our research revealed that ergonomic chairs in the market were, generally speaking, effective. The problem was that they were only effective for the first 20 minutes and most users were required to sit for a much longer time period. The reason that chairs lose effectiveness is that they are traditionally designed to place a user in an exact position. Exact positions are not desired because they do not allow the body to help itself. Constant and continued circulation is a key factor in healthy sitting. Circulation replenishes the nutrients the body needs in order to remain healthy. To address circulation we must look at the spine and the hips.

The Spine The spine consists of 24 vertebrae; 7 in the neck (cervical), 12 in the mid back (thoracic) and 5 in the lumbar. The vertebral discs are located between these vertebrae. The discs are similar to a gel and must remain in that gel like state, or ”pumped up” to remain healthy. This “pumped up” condition will keep the vertebrae separated. After 20 minutes in a sitting posture, the discs will turn from a semi-liquid to a semi-solid. In the semi solid state they will compress, bringing the vertebrae into potentially damaging positions and not allowing nutrients to pass through. The only way we can keep the disc pumped up, is to feed it the fluids and nutrition required. After the age of 20, we lose the direct blood supply to the disc and the only way to receive nutrition is through osmosis*. As the vertebrae move, they create the friction needed to inject nutrition into the disc. This is why, when sitting for some time, our backs get tight and when we stand we must twist our bodies left and right to loosen up. Exact positions do not allow osmosis to occur, in fact, exact positions lock the spine in place and prevent the vertebrae from moving.

The Hips Below the hip joint are 2 small bones called the “Ichial Tuberosity” or “sitting bones”. When locked, they create a chain reaction up through the sacrum into the lumbar area and up the entire spinal column. As noted above, the spine must create osmosis in order to stay healthy. If you lock these bones, you prevent this process from occurring. If a cushion is too soft or is made from gel, we lock these bones in place creating the chain reaction described. The goal is to allow the body to move in the chair through subtle movements that allows the body to replenish the nutrients it needs. This movement is encouraged by the shape and construction of the seat cushions. You will note that the Contessa seat cushions are not overly contoured. This generally flat surface allows the body to create the desired movement. When sitting in a chair that has overly contoured cushions, we create what amounts to be a cast for our bodies. When we remove a cast from our arm or leg after 6-8 weeks, we see that the muscles have shrunk and are very weak. *The frequency of fluids to pass through a membrane, so as to equalize concentrations or fluids on both sides of the membrane.

Contessa Product Launch Package

Page 8: Katalog stolica contessa 2

6

This condition is called atrophy, or more specifically, “disuse atrophy”. If we lock our bodies into one position, we don’t allow muscles to work. Just like a cast creates atrophy in the muscle group it surrounds, locking the hips or the rib cage will create atrophy in the sitting muscles making them weaker. The result will be that our bodies will no longer be able to hold proper posture. This is why ergonomists are embracing the idea that exact, unmoving positions are not healthy. Ideally, we must allow our bodies to move and circulate. This movement strengthens our muscles and allows the body to replenish the critical fluids it needs to stay healthy. The Contessa chair was designed to allow this movement. The shape of the cushions allows the body to move and get stronger.

The seat density is a critical element as well. The seat cushion must have enough density to support the user throughout the workday without locking the user in place. The Contessa cushion density allows the sitting bones to oscillate within the hip socket, keeping them free to move. This produces a positive reaction up through the spine, keeping the spine in movement. Combined with the cushion density is the construction of the “Tess Mesh” fabric that makes up the back (and seat if no cushion is required). The back of the chair is a combination of a supportive mesh material and an interwoven yarn fabric. This combination results in a softer feel and a less abrasive back material. The seat pan incorporates this interwoven technology providing a tighter weave which offers more support for the user. This keeps the user from sinking too deep into the seat pan which accomplishes the following:

1. Greater support allows the ichial tuberosity to move within the hip region. 2. Prevents the user from having contact with the frame, which keeps circulation flowing to the

lower extremities. The body responds to the Contessa design. This design allows the body to maintain strength and circulation as opposed to getting weaker and stagnant. Next, we must address what the chair does. In order to do that, we must look at the desired end result. The diagram below illustrates how we ideally would set up a workstation, in order to avoid problems from long term sitting postures. This was the basic starting point of our design intent.

7

The set up:

These 3 zones are the building blocks of a healthy workday. When addressing what the chair must do we need to have enough adjustments so that 95% of the workforce can achieve these postures. Some features we included, were adjustments that are intuitive to the user. It is important to make the adjustments obvious to the user. If the user does not know where the adjustments are, they won’t use them. What the cha r does: i The most important element of the chair’s function is how the user makes the adjustments. When Giugiaro Design began the Contessa project, they had recently designed the Lamborghini. They were creating the adjustments for the driver’s seat and were attempting to make a “smart” operation to make it easy for the driver to understand and make adjustments. This “smart operation” was carried over into Contessa by positioning the seat height and back lock in the armrest eliminating reaching and searching for adjustments under the seat pan.

Page 10: Katalog stolica contessa 2

This unique aspect of Contessa brings “user friendly” to a new level in task seating. The user can instinctively achieve the proper height, as well as free float or lock the chair in position with ease. This is important as it allows the user to take advantage of the synchronic mechanism incorporated into Contessa. The synchronic tilt has the following benefits:

Synchronic Mechanism A synchronic tilt mechanism is designed to help keep the proper angle for your hips and lower back. The control operates so that when you lean back, the seat pan will deflect 1 degree for every 2.8 degrees of back deflection. There is no separation of the seat and back allowing the user to maintain the correct posture. Results: 1. This allows the user to achieve a hip angle of greater then 91 degrees. Proper posture allows the

body to support itself as originally intended. Deviation from these “correct postures” can and will create difficulties. Our bodies were not designed to hold exact positions (especially 90 degrees).

- There are 2 muscle groups that hold the body upright. In the front are flexor muscles and in the back are extensors.

- The challenge we have is that the front muscles (flexors) are twice as strong as the back (extensors). What happens is that the front muscles will take over if we try and hold a position; we then create a spinal posture called flexion. To picture flexion imagine your spine as it is supposed to be in an “S” shape. Flexion puts your spine in a “C” shape. Flexion pinches the vertebrae. If we are in flexion long enough, it can lead to problems. To illustrate the difference in muscle strength, imagine that you grab a live electric wire; typically, you can’t release the wire. Why? The flexor muscles are actively gripping the wire, and our extensor muscles are not strong enough to overcome the flexors and create the release. This is why we created a chair that allows the user to achieve hip angles of greater then 91 degrees. This allows the flexor muscles to regain the advantage and hold the body without moving into “slumping” postures. A synchronic mechanism gives Contessa that ability.

2. It keeps your hips at a level above your knees. This takes the pressure off of your lower back. Your

lumbar area will support approximately 75% of you upper body weight. It is critical that we alleviate pressure or compressed forces on the lumbar region of the spine (L1-L5) as much as possible. The synchronic tilt helps keep your hips “up” taking pressure off your lower back and distributing that weight onto your lower extremities.

3. It keeps the pressure off of the back of your legs. Directly behind the knee is a sensitive area of arteries and veins. This area is not protected by any muscle group. As a result, it is critical that we keep pressure off of that region. If we do not relieve this pressure, we can potentially cut off circulation to the lower extremities. The synchronic tilt moves at an angle that reduces pressure, thus keeping circulation consistent.

Tilt Tension: The seat back, in free float, allows the user to achieve the desired (91 degree, or greater) angle of the hip. The proper tension gives us the resistance we need, in order to maintain that posture while keeping the back of the chair in constant contact with our back. The key to Contessa’s tilt tension adjustment is that it is easily located on the side for ease of adjustment, but it was also engineered so that the user doesn’t have to rotate the adjustment numerous times to get the proper resistance. Research from focus groups has shown that users get frustrated and give up on getting the right tension. With 4 distinct positions, the user can pick a resistance level and test that level in order to achieve the most comfortable motion.

Note: Chair must be unlocked and in the upright position.

Seat Height: Another requirement is to allow the user to keep their feet firmly planted on the ground. Keeping your feet planted will keep your circulation constant and help absorb the compressed forces created from sitting. Seat Slider: As mentioned, directly behind your knee is a sensitive area. This area must be left unencumbered to encourage circulation. If we have a seat pan extend all the way to the back of the knee, we create circulatory problems. The rule that was used to develop this adjustment was to allow the user to keep the width of three fingers, or a closed fist, between the front of the seat pan and the back of the leg. The seat slider adjustment allows the user to place the seat pan in The seat height lever is on the right

(Think r ght heigh ). i t the correct position.

The seat slider is located under the seat pan on both sides. This allows the user to grab the seat pan while activating the adjustment for ease of movement. Note: Both sides must be pulled - allowing the user to rock the seat in the proper position.

10

Lumbar adjustments: Our design intent was to address two aspects of lumbar adjustment:

1. Height 2. Depth

The height of the lumbar is traditionally addressed in all ergonomic chairs. Allowing the user to place the adjustment in the area of the back occupied by the lumbar vertebrae (L1-L5) is critical in order to keep the lordotic curve in the lower back. This curve is the natural way our spine is designed, and in its natural position can support the most weight. The second element is the depth. After 20 continuous minutes of sitting, the vertebral disks will turn from a semi-liquid to a semi-solid. These disks need to remain pumped up with fluids in order to remain healthy. The depth of the lumbar adjustment allows the vertebrae to stay separated and makes room for the disks to receive the nutrition they need to stay healthy.

The lumbar height is on a ratchet system and is adjusted by lifting the independent lumbar from both sides. From the sitting position, place hands on the levers provided. The depth is adjusted by rotating the lever on both sides of the back to move forward or back.

Arm Adjustments: The key to the arm adjustment with Contessa is to create a position for the shoulders, elbows and wrist that keeps them in a neutral position. Neutral simply means that the user has free passage in these joints to keep circulation active and consistent. The wrist, for instance, must be placed to avoid deviation either up (extension), down (flexion), right (alnar) or left (radial). The design goal was to create arms that allow the user to type in what is defined as the primary zone. This position is the optimal typing posture. This is why the arms on Contessa are designed to pivot (for the wrists) and move up and down (placing shoulders and elbows in the correct position). These positions give the user the range of adjustment to achieve a healthy typing posture.

The height adjustment is on a ratchet system. To move them up and down, simply lift them up to desired position. When the arms are lifted all the way up, they release and allow the arms to adjust all the way down. The arms pivot by rotating the caps left and right.
