The products described throughout this catalogue are the offspring of

a 40-year experience in designing and building of air conditioning units and

liquid chillers.

Our production quality is guaranteed by the use of high reliability com-

ponents and by continuous investments allowing our company to make use

of the most advanced technologies.

The commitment in research and in our organisation grants a continu-

ous growth of our products to meet the users requirements.

Company professional competence lets us offer each customer a most

qualified and considerable business relation.

The images here displayed generally summarize the different applica-

tions to which our products are dedicated, starting from: Hi-Tech. to Com-

fort applications, passing through Industry and Leisure.

Every application is characterized by precise working and plant logics

and all of them are joined by the one and only fundamental problems: the

application criticality.

Critical Applications are defined by their requirement of which full Con-

tinuity & Quality of service are not seen as optional but are demanded as

fundamental to the service itself.

These applications normally operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 12

months a year.

They range from vital services supported by sophisticated electronic

systems, through installations providing information to the business com-

munity and general public amenities designed to improve the quality of our

day to day lives.

Most of todays products available on the market, especially water

chillers for support of room air conditioning units are designed and manu-

factured to be used for Comfort Cooling applications, requiring only sea-

sonal cooling during the summer period. Failure of these systems results

only in minimal personal discomfort to the occupants.

RC product range is specifically designed and manufactured to meet

the most demanding requirements of the Critical Application Project type in

terms of 24 hour a day, all year round operation, energy efficiency and

built-in redundancies.

RC equipment production has always been directed towards air condi-

tioning and liquid refrigeration systems for applications with high critical

content. The first units manufactured in 1963, were in fact 3 Close Control

Cabinet Units for the computing department of a Bank. Since then RC has

developed significant expertise both in the system evaluation, equipment

manufacture and in the research of suitable and innovative solutions. This

experience has contributed to a continuous improvement of the product of

which this issue of the RC Catalogue is the summary.

Technology, absolute reliability, high quality and the corresponding ex-

acting attention to the various system requirements are the main ingredi-

ents of the proposed wide product range.

The commitment of RC finds a reply in the thousands of product deliv-

eries, destined to these types of installations. These particular applica-

tions need reliable equipment in order to guarantee uninterrupted work-

ing and to reduce the technical assistance required for routine mainte-

nance procedures.

RC uses this design and manufacturing normally and generally; the prod-

uct, specific for critical applications, is strictly mass-produced to ensure

repeatable high quality products as shown in the RC catalogues.

RC has always been at the leading edge of applied research and the

new technologies to improve its production capabilities.

This enterprise policy has given important results, further promoting

RC products as a market leader on the international stage together with

an International Worldwide Sales and After-Sales Network. Competent and

always well-informed engineers are always available to give current prod-

uct and system application advice, best suited to the Clients specific project

requirements.

RC progressive sales network covers the whole world in an extensive

way. This network is supported by a widespread and qualified Service

Organization that guarantees an excellent after-sales service with reac-

tion times corresponding only to the importance of that demanded by the

Clients service requirements.

The confirmation of RC continuing product quality is the systematic

development of its products, in the applications where the system reliabil-

ity is a priority.

This partition helps to identify a specific product in a simple and intui-

Almost all the entrepreneurial realities, which we have had the opportu-

nity to become acquainted with on the occasion of our interviews, have in

common determination and initiative, qualities which put the Italian work

world in a positive light even though it is still so controversial and tor-

mented.

Every company, however, has its own peculiarities that can be discovered

during interviews or felt in the air having just crossed the threshold.

In the case of RC Group the first sensation was one of serenity, or better, of

efficiency without agitation. Tranquil its location at the foot of the Pavese

hills, inviting its headquarters, serene the attitude of its office workers

and factory workers, neat and tidy its plant. The activity is intense but, as

we will see, governed by organization and common sense.

Roberto Caciolli, who gave us the interview, is one of the three owners, all

in the management of the company, together with his brother Fabrizio and

their friend Sergio Gallina.

History always helps us to understand the present and in the evolution of

your Group, I believe it is almost indispensable to know the beginnings.

The Company was established in 1963 with the aim of producing air conditioning

and refrigeration systems for critical applications. One of the first products was

an air conditioner for a data processing centre for San Paolo Bank of Torino

(probably one of the first air conditioner for data processing centres realized in

Italy).

This typology required a lot of know-how at all levels, from the knowledge

of the problem to solve to the ability to choose the most appropriate tech-

nological applications.

Throughout the sixties the company grew slowly, without a real array of

products for mass-production, but producing on order what the market

required of the refrigeration and conditioning of the times, designing and

realizing personalized machines on the basis of the customers needs.

The experience of those first years in its life profoundly influenced the

company philosophy, making flexibility and speed of response to the market

needs the cards which are still winning today.

A first turn took place at the beginning of the seventies when we presented

a line of air conditioners especially dedicated to DPC and an agreement was

signed with a Multinational Leader in the computer field that wanted to

offer turnkey solutions to its clients.

Not only the computer part was offered, but also all the equipment for the

site and whatever was necessary for the correct functioning of the ma-

chines contained in it.

The agreement permitted RC Condizionatori to consolidate and presenting

itself at the beginning of the eighties on the European market with a well-

defined catalogue of specific products for DPC.

In 1982 we created a distribution network, covering initially all of western

Europe with remarkable success right from the beginning, because in that

moment the companies in the market were very few. It was a rapidly-

growing market, with a high technological component, suitable for small

and medium-sized companies, rapid and flexible, that made it possible to

realize extremely interesting economic results.

The profits in this way were constantly reinvested, permitting the com-

pany to multiply its proceeds of sales every year from 1978 to 1989, al-

ways maintaining unchanged the quality of its products, of the service of-

fered to its clients and of the company organization.

In the years immediately following there was a great crisis in the EDP field;

did your orientation change?

After 1989 the processing understood as a central unit of data processing

disappeared, that big black box which needed to be maintained under

special predefined conditions by a special air conditioning system con-

structed ad hoc.

With the development of distributed computer systems and of the per-

sonal computer, the market for conditioners for DPC dropped vertically.

We had already prepared for this situation: already towards the end of

1988 we had started pushing more for the refrigeration for civil air condi-

tioning which, in any case, already represented an important part of our

production (about 20% of our proceeds of sales).

Towards the end of 1989 we acquired a company in Rome, the AMP, special-

ized in the construction of big size water chillers and of an array of recip-

rocating compressors with specific capacities from 200 to 500 kW.

These two realities fused in November 1998 giving life to the RC Group.

Between the end of the eighties and the beginning of the nineties we var-

ied our mix of products a great deal: at the end of the last decade about

80% of our production was aimed at data processing centres and about

20% at refrigeration for air conditioning in the advanced tertiary, but

already in 1991-1992 the proportion had changed its course reaching a

ratio of 40% to 60%.

This permitted us to maintain a constant growth and to have sufficient

resources to transfer immediately to the emerging field of digital and cel-

lular telephony, first, and of advanced computer systems today (technolo-

gies connected to the transmission, elaboration and storage of data with

Internet Protocol), all experience acquired in the systems for DPC.

The results attained in these areas brought us to such an increase in pro-

ceeds of sales that, even facing a continual increase in the field of refrig-

eration for civil uses and for the tertiary, the mix returned to a net pre-

dominance of products with a high technological content.

At the present time, in the field of telecommunication, mobile phones and

advanced computer systems we cover a very interesting quota of the

market, both in Italy and worldwide where, if we exclude the United States,

we are one of the two leading companies with worldwide coverage.

In 1992, again with the aim of diversifying the production, a new evapora-

tor was immediately studied and patented which incorporates a system of

accumulation and expansion tank and filling called Idrocompl.

Towards the end of 1989 we acquired a

company in Rome, the AMP, specialized

in the construction of big size waterchillers and of an array of reciprocat-

ing compressors with specific capaci-

ties from 200 to 500kW.




This component has become the starting point for the engineering of a new

line of chillers with low capacity (780kW) with innovative characteris-

tics compared to the competition.

Idrocompl boasts, in fact, a characteristic that makes it unique: it is abso-

lutely resistant to the formation of ice on the inside, generated by wrong

manoeuvres or breakdown of the security devices.

Since 2002 there have therefore been two productive poles, each with its

own philosophy at the product level:

AMP in Rome is the company that produces both the chillers with high

capacity (from 400 to 4000 kW) and a series of reciprocating compres-

sors from 3 to 10 cylinders (presently the most powerful in the world

constructed);

RC Condizionatori in Pavia produces the middle range in the array of chill-

ers (from 50 to 400 kW) and, in addition to that, is specialized in the part

of air conditioning for telecommunication and for technological premises

of medium and large capacity and in the systems of air conditioning for

mobile communication;

RC Condizionatori in Zeccone is specialized in small chillers (5270kW).

Our productive growth over the nineties was therefore remarkable.

Consequently, the effort for organization to cover the various market ar-

eas will also have been remarkable.

Yes, today our company is well represented throughout Italy with a

network of Agents who are supported in turn by a network of technical

post-sales service, even more vast and capillary. Abroad, instead, we work

with exclusive Distributors, companies which handle both the commerciali-

zation of the product and the technical service.

Technical service is one of our favourite points: in our market of refer-

ence, the technological field, machines must work 24 hours a day for 365

days a year, so post-sales service is a key factor in the correct functioning

of the system.

With the same philosophy we face also the civil and tertiary field, and

so our authorized Service Centres are able to respond rapidly even in the

most critical periods of the year.

How is this tissue of single realities managed? Centrally by the RC Group,

or also by Rome?

At organizational level, the two divisions are maintained completely

independent and are considered to be autonomous profit centres at pro-

duction level, though they were fused in 1998 into a single legal entity,

the RC Group. Research & Development, Commercial and Financial activi-

ties are centralized. Centralized but not from a geographic standpoint,

Abroad, instead, we work with exclu-

sive Distributors, companies which han-

dle both the commercialization of the

product and the technical service.

since the technical, commercial and financial personnel is distributed

among the two structures and cooperate through an advanced commu-

nication system, allowing sharing of projects, data, images and docu-

ments in real time.

What are the pros and cons of this organization of sales based on Distribu-

tors?

The Distributor is a choice we made at the beginning and one we be-

lieve in and will carry on with. On the one hand it becomes challenging in

terms of management because there are three independent companies

working with their own objectives and their own mode of being present on

the market. But, on the other hand, they guarantee a strong motivation for

reaching volumes of sales increasingly more interesting.

In addition to that, a high and efficient exchange of information is real-

ized without any type of filter: the more the Distributors are able to trans-

fer their market problems to us, the more we are able to solve them cre-

ating in this way objectives in common and a virtuous circle.

The mutual satisfaction of this system is confirmed by the fact that the

turnover of our distributors is very low: 80% of those activated in 1983

are still operating.

Also the turnover on the inside of our Group is low, perhaps thanks to

the fact the Company has always followed very precise procedures, both

at the commercial and industrial levels, with no abstruse or strange ma-

noeuvres. There is stability in the organization and in the management which

makes us dependable on the inside and towards the outside.

Whats the strategy behind your success story?

Today the group is managed by a team composed of three persons: my

brother Fabrizio, our partner Sergio Gallina and me. All of us share the

same objectives and responsibilities. Our task is to further develop and

innovate some of the peculiarities behind RC success, one of which is to be

forerunners in many organizational and technological aspects.

For example, in 1984 we were about fifty people, with a turnover that

touched 5 million Euro; in 2001, with 216 people, our turnover has ex-

ceeded 80 million Euro. This result has been attained thanks to our choice,

dating back to 1980, to maintain inside this structure a strong component

at an engineering, marketing and sales level, by outsourcing a part of our

production, that is using some very specialized outside entities to manu-

facture components or pieces based on our design.

How are you organized from the technical point of view?

We have two technical organizations: one is purely dedicated to the re-

search and development of our products and/or systems, the other fol-

lows the product, from its engineering for production to its perfecting

according to the checks obtained from experience in the field.

The technical organization of production is subdivided into 2 independ-

ent but inter-operative organizations, located in the production divisions of

Pavia and Rome.

The management of all the technical issues of the group is the respon-

sibility of Roberto Trecate, who has been working with us since 1968, who

has had a chance to see the product as a whole, from the phase of analysis

of the needs of the client to the design, passing through the construction

and arriving at the installation and its maintenance in the field. A 360 de-

gree view of the product, then, a very rare opportunity given the speciali-

zation of the various fields. The research and development part is inte-

grated with and collaborates daily with the technicians of the production

offices in order to design new products and systems, without losing sight

of their feasibility. At the moment when the prototype is accepted on the

commercial and performance level, the engineering is activated for the

production and the successive commercial launch.

During my visit to the offices I noted a high level of computerization...

In 1982 we had already developed software that permitted us to cre-

ate a virtual model of the product in order to be able to find out, with an

acceptable margin of error, the performances even before having devel-

oped the prototype. This software product was transformed into an elec-

tronic catalogue that was distributed free of charge at our sales centres

and among our clients in 1985.

It was perhaps one of the first electronic catalogues in our sector, and

today it is fully integrated in our Enterprise Resource Planning software,

since it has been turned into a Product Configurator for the manufacturing

system. Today we are able to design the product and automatically gener-

ate the software part that lets the distributor and the agent select it.

We care a lot about the computerized part which gives us daily sup-

port that cannot be done without.

In 1983 we had already abolished drawing desks in favour of compu-

ter-aided design (CAD), even though the operation really represented a

disproportionate investment in our situation at that time.

Anticipating the times again in this aspect, we found ourselves ready

for the next steps with no effort. Today all products are developed with a

tridimensional CAD system, allowing an incredibly short Time to the Mar-

ket vital to our success in the Information and Communication Technology

business. We have just implemented one of the most innovative ERP (sys-

tems of resource planning for companies), for the real time management

of all corporate structures.

For years we have been using Internet to communicate with our sales

network and to give assistance by e-mail and we operate with a sophisti-

cated system of Intranet that connects the 3 productive divisions in real

time at the level of voice, data and video.

The realization of Extranet is in progress which will permit our external

collaborators to have direct access to all the company information regard-

ing the products sold by them and to those currently in the catalogue.

Can you mention some other distinguishing organizational characteristics?

In our company there are no managerial levels; it may be said that at

managerial level the company is flat.

Of course there are persons who, apart from their daily work, have

also management duties, but there are no managers operating on the basis

Our basic philosophy is that of not creating simply a product, but mak-

ing it unique through a mixture of innovations and plus.

We feel, for example, that we are a leader company regarding the

noise limiting of the water chillers and for years we have catalogued, as a

standard product, a whole array of water chillers called ELN, with excep-

tional intrinsic characteristics of low sound levels.

At the beginning of the seventies we were the first to propose an air

cooled water chiller with an inbuilt free-cooling system.

The present MAXIMO is the result of this thirty year experience that

has reached its high point in the original control software making an en-

ergy savings possible that is still unequalled.

Confirming our desire to maintain an actual leadership in this sector,

all MAXIMO chillers are now available with the patented Free-Cooling

Optimizer system, that will double the energy savings normally achieved

by a standard free-cooling system.

Also regarding the materials we have been the first to introduce some

changes which by now have been adopted by everyone: for example, starting

in the eighties we were the first company in our field to utilize aluminium

profile to make the structural part of the product (I am talking about air

conditioners and water chillers); in the same years we started substituting

the copper capillaries, a fragile point in the cooling circuit, with flexible plas-

tic pipes that were used in the air conditioning for automobiles.

Then, still not satisfied with the performance of this product which had

a high porosity and therefore substantial losses over time, together with a

Multinational operating in the field of plastic materials, we developed a

type of material suitable for use in our field.

Now these flexible pipes are found in most good quality chillers, but for

about eight years we were the only company to have exclusivity. On the

basis of this experience we then proceeded to substitute with plastic ma-

terial also the flow piping of compressors up to large dimensions.

Here the objective was not to eliminate breakdowns, but to limit the

transmission of the noise of the vibrations from the reciprocating com-

pressor to the condensing system.

Today these applications are used by very many companies, but we

were the first to develop the idea and we promoted it.

In the field DPC we were the first to bring the compressors inside the

machine in the environment, overcoming quite a lot of resistance from the

clients, who were afraid of the noise and did not want to see repairmen in

their own data processing centres. We applied a whole series of expedi-

ents so every problem has been overcome and now 99% of the units for

these centres have the compressor on the inside. We have always be-

lieved in the need for innovation, not only on the product level but also on

the level of the component.

Another important aspect is that of regulation. Already by the end of

the seventies we had electronic regulators with digital displays on our

machines, which were substituted in 1984 with the first system of regula-

tion using a microprocessor, completely developed by us from the hard-

ware point of view as well as the software.

This experience has permitted us to develop a regulation which, dif-

ferently from many others, really manages the unit. Indeed, all our con-

trol systems with microprocessors come with the logic Proactive Con-

trol System.

Thanks to this original system our control systems with microproc-

essors are not only monitoring devices for what is happening, but they

control and regulate the complete functioning of the unit and the opera-

tion of the security system, anticipating problems about to arise and

guaranteeing in this way the continuous functioning of the unit even in

critical situations.

The software used is innovative and patented, such as that for the heat

pumps, called Idea, which makes it possible to obtain energy savings and

efficiency decidedly superior to the average for the field.

Your company is one of the first of its field in Europe to obtain ISO 9000

certification.

Actually we were the first company in our field in Europe to obtain ISO

9000 certification; In Italy we were number 18, but those who preceded us

were of completely different types and dimensions.

Practically we already had an existing inside system of quality control;

it meant simply to formalize it.

Today we have an office dedicated only to quality and we are repaid

also under this aspect: despite our being a somewhat small company, we

have been able, for example, to get contracts in the field of nuclear power

plants where the qualitative aspects, along with the security ones, are

you mean with this term?

Our whole operation is based on the maximum openness, from our

way of providing service to our availability to collaborate with designers,

from our relationships with Distributors to the possibi lity of stages which

we offer to students.

Talking about technical service, we are more oriented to transferring

our know-how to the various outside centres and to our Distributors,

rather than to intervene directly. Even though our service centres and

Distributors are completely independent companies, they are treated as if

they were an integral part of our Company and we are not afraid to pro-

vide 100% of the information. Our company Extranet is in the finishing

stages and it will permit the Distributor and the service centre to access

and therefore, its complete history, from production to life in the field. We

AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM WITH UPFLOW AIR DELIVERY (OVER)

It is the system traditionally used in the air conditioning field. The air distribution is from the top of the unit through a plenum device

or through some ducts in case of false ceiling.The air flow in each area is predetermined during the design stage and it is not dependent on the actual state of the load to be

dissipated.

The system is normally applied in Comfort plants and in those plants having a defined low/medium room thermal loads density.

DIRECT EXPANSION UNITS

Available up to 100 kW cooling capacity and over, these direct expansion air conditioning units are particularly suitable for low and

medium installations, where the compactness of the units and their simple installation are fundamental requirements. They are available

both with remote air cooled condensers and in packaged version with built-in water cooled condenser. Equipped with Scroll type

compressors, characterized by high efficiency and low noise, RC GROUP direct expansion air conditioning units stand out for the buildingaccuracy, the high reliability and the extreme installation flexibility, thanks to a wide range of optional extras that have been conceived

to satisfy all demands.

CHILLED WATER UNITS

Similar to direct expansion units, the chilled water air conditioning units are suitable for medium - large installations matched to

different kinds of liquid chillers.

The range is very rich with a large number of optional extras suitable for every specific plant demand. The construction quality, the

AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM WITH DOWNFLOW AIR DELIVERY THROUGH RAISED FLOOR (UNDER)

The air distribution is from the bottom by means of the plenum between the building floor and the raised floor.

This solution is usually applied in hi-tech. room a/c and it is most favourable when the thermal load is uniformly distributed in all areasof the room.

DIRECT EXPANSION UNITS

Available up to 100 kW cooling capacity and over, these direct expansion air conditioning units are particularly suitable for low and

medium installations, where the compactness of the units and their simple installation are fundamental requirements. They are available

both with remote air cooled condensers and in packaged version with built-in water cooled condenser. Equipped with Scroll type

compressors, characterized by high efficiency and low noise, RC GROUP direct expansion air conditioning units stand out for the building

accuracy, the high reliability and the extreme installation flexibility, thanks also to a wide range of optional extras that have been

conceived to satisfy all demands.

CHILLED WATER UNITS

Similar to direct expansion units, the chilled water air conditioning units are suitable for medium - large installations matched to

different kinds of liquid chillers.

The range is very rich with a large number of optional extras suitable for every specific plant demand. The construction quality, the

materials used and the particular care at planning stage of RC GROUP chilled water units, guarantee noise levels among the lowest in

this product category.
