Great Day at Lameroo Thursday saw all of our Preschool to Year 7 students involved in a great swimming event at the Lameroo Pool. The first to jump in were our Preschool to Year 3 students who were involved in a great splash carnival and other water based activities outside of the pool. From the smiles on the students’ faces it was obvious they had an absolute ball. Next up our Year 4 to 7 students participated in a series of serious stroke events (freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke) along with novelty events including kickboard, tube and noodle races and relays. The event finished off with the trade mark Big Splash and a bit of free time in the pool. It was great to see the students get in and have a go at the events and the sportsmanship on display. Thank you to all of the staff who helped to organise the event, drive buses and supervise students throughout the day. Thank you also to the parents who travelled over to support their children and helped time during the day. Finally a big thank you to Rebecca Pudney, Emily Edwards and Janet Neumann for being the life guards on duty throughout the day, we very much appreciate your time in helping to keep our students safe.

Change of Newsletter to Fortnightly After much discussion as a staff we are considering a change to the frequency of the school newsletter. We are proposing to have the newsletter go out on a fortnightly basis. The main reasons for these changes are the significant workload and the cost of producing a weekly newsletter.
Please fill in the feedback form at the back of today’s newsletter with your thoughts.

Reception/Year One Update Written by Julie Boughen Our swimming day at Lameroo last Thursday was the highlight for the week. The students enjoyed both the land water fun activities with Mrs Roberts and Mrs Hocking and the Splash Carnival with Mrs Boughen, Mrs Keough and Mrs Wegner. Thank you to our lifeguards Miss Edwards and Bec Pudney . The Receptions surprised us because they were given a choice between the small and larger pool and all of them ended up doing some modified events in the main pool. Well done Receptions and Year Ones. Thank you to the parents/caregivers spectators. Now for some Literacy News. The Receptions have been explicitly introduced to five sight words so far this year through stories, poems and flashcard games and on Friday they took home their first sight word shape inside their reader cover. They have also been introduced to 13 letter sounds through their corresponding Jolly Phonics stories, songs, actions and letter formations. They took their own letter sound books home to begin sharing on Friday. At school we have also begun studying how the letter sounds we have studied can be blended to make words.
All the Reception children have had their Phonological Awareness tested. This involves listening for syllables, rhyme, first letter sounds
of words, blending 3 letters and listening for 3 sounds in words. This has enabled me to focus on activities to teach skills still developing and to capitalize on skill strengths. The children have also been tested on their recognition of letter names and sounds. The children have been taking home repetitive reading books from week one. The purpose of these books has been to encourage concepts of print; tracking the text from left to right, touching each word as spoken, remembering the text off by heart and enjoying their role play reading. Many of the children are already noticing our five introduced sight words in these books too. Well done! Within Reception literacy groups we continually study the above concepts during guided reading. Our next focus is to learn to use the beginning letter sounds of words in context to work out what a word might be and sound out whole words if needed. This week we will also begin a focus on writing our names efficiently with correct letter formation and correct pencil hold encouragement will continue.
The Year Ones have continued their focus on writing descriptions with a little revisit to recounts for a writing piece on Friday after the swimming day last Thursday. They are also working better with their Words Their Way routines and have been pretested on their tricky writing words to begin learning these this week.

Concentrating to complete tasks when the teacher is teaching another group will need some development and encouragement. Keep trying hard to do better. The Year Ones have blown out their holiday cobwebs and are reading and writing more fluently. Well done!
This week we are going to share our Guess Who? Bags. We will share a few per day. Thanks for helping your child(ren) organize their bags. I wonder if we are able to guess whose bag is whose.
