Principal’s Comments
John Oldham 50 Years in Education We are quietly celebrating John Oldham’s 50 years of service to the State Government of Victoria as a teacher. At assembly the school captains Aimee and Fletcher presented to John sheets of best wishes from each class. Kim Cunningham has now sent off the images to be printed as a keepsake for John. A celebration morning tea was held at recess with John providing us with a few funny experiences of his teaching days. Last Friday the Department of Education sent a journalist and a video team to interview and film John talking about his depth of teaching.
John began his teaching career in 1966 at Burwood Teachers College where he undertook his initial training. From 1968 to 1974 John taught at Mountain Gate, Knoxfield and Vermont Primary Schools. There was an opportunity for study leave and in 1975 had the opportunity for a further year of training. He returned to classroom teaching at Ferntree Gully and Woorana Park Primary Schools.
In 1981 John was promoted to Assistant with Responsibility at Belgrave South Primary where he taught for three years and then had promotion positions at Kallista and Blackburn Lake Primary Schools. In 2001 John became a Leading Teacher at Blackburn Lake Primary School where he first started teaching Music.
It was 2003 when John arrived at Karoo with his passion and enthusiasm for teaching Music and sharing his joy with students. John has always tried to ‘make a difference’ with each student who he has taught and has inspired many students to love playing music and performing. John has provided many opportunities for students to extend their performing arts experience with State Schools Spectacular, Year 3 and 4 Productions, Choir, instrumental and percussion bands, On-Line Music, and Rock Bands. Each student has access to ukuleles, guitars and percussion instruments in the Music room and lots of chances for dance and movement.
John has appreciated the support from many parents for State Schools Spectacular and school productions. He has a dry sense of humour and continues to enjoy working to achieve the best and most positive outcomes for students. John will attend the Department of Education dinner in July recognising this service. We send our congratulations and best wishes to John.
NAPLAN Yesterday Years 3 and 5 students began the NAPLAN tests with Language Conventions and Writing. The students were required to answer questions such as: ‘Which word in the sentence is a noun? Which sentence is punctuated correctly? What does the pronoun them refer to in the sentence? Which type of word is live in the sentence? –noun, verb, adjective or adverb. The writing was a narrative with students asked to write a story about a list of characters and objects which had a problem or they could create their own story. Teachers have ensured that the students are calm and relaxed, so they can do their personal best.
Children’s Book Week Thank you to the Library Team- Michelle Mitchell, Sue Austin and Dianne Eva for the preparation they are putting into Children’s Book Week. I have listed here Sue’s advice about our visiting illustrator. ‘We have been lucky enough to obtain the services of Craig Smith a well known children's illustrator to help us celebrate Book Week. Craig has illustrated many children's books including the Too Cool series. He will be providing one hour sessions to the Prep - Year 4s on Tuesday the 23rd August in the Library. The sessions will include Craig teaching the students some illustrating techniques and they will have the opportunity to draw under Craig’s guidance. Session times will be provided closer to the time.’

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S COMMENTS
NAPLAN at Karoo Yesterday our Year 3 and Year 5 students, a total of 194 students completed two components of the NAPLAN assessments. The first test was the language Conventions which assesses their knowledge and understanding of spelling, grammar and punctua-tion. For the writing test students were provided with a ‘writing stimulus’ (sometimes called a prompt—an idea or topic) and asked to write a response in a particular text type—this year the students wrote a Narrative story. Despite the formality and rigorous test con-ditions adhered to, the staff were delighted with the positive attitude shown by our students prior to and after the tests. I spoke to sever-al students later in the day and I was impressed by their compo-sure, they spoke about ‘having a go’, ‘giving it their best’ and feeling proud of their efforts. These comments highlight the strength of our teacher programs, and importantly the commitment to learning.

INDONESIAN NEWS
On Monday 9th May at the school assembly, some boys and girls from Year 3 performed Dayung Sampan on the angklung.
The song is about travelling by boat in the 15th century when there were no aeroplanes. The students practised hard during several lunch times to get the song right and they gave a good rendition of the song at assembly. We are very proud of their achievement.

Why Does my Asthma get worse
when I have Hayfever?
Allergic rhinitis, where the lining of the nose, back of the throat and mouth become inflamed and swollen due to exposure to allergens such as house dust mites, pets, pollens and moulds and other irritants, is very common among people with asthma.
Hay fever (also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis) is the best known type of allergic rhinitis, with its associated itching, sneezing, runny nose or eyes and often blocked nose occurring during the pollen season. However perennial allergic rhinitis, where nasal symptoms occur throughout the year, is often seen in patients with asthma.
There is now good evidence that in patients with asthma, the presence of aller-gic rhinitis can also exacerbate their asthma. The reason for this is not entirely clear but suggestions include that breathing through your mouth when your nose is blocked can further aggravate your asthma by bypassing the nose’s filtering and humidifying function or that there is a reflex effect of nasal inflam-mation which triggers lower airway narrowing.
It is therefore recommended that when both asthma and allergic rhinitis co-exist that both are treated, with a preventer puffer in the case of asthma, and anti histamines and/or preventer nasal spray (generally a nasal corticosteroid) in the case of allergic rhinitis. Antileukotriene preventer medications (e.g. Singulair) have benefits for both asthma and allergic rhinitis so are sometimes used as a single therapy if these conditions co-exist. If your allergic rhinitis is making your asthma more difficult to control talk to your doctor about which medications are best for you.
Well done to all of the Karoo students who ran last Friday in the Rowville District Cross Country at Jells Park. Perfect weather made for a very enjoyable morning for runners and spectators. Parents have commented on the great support that our students gave to each other, especially near the finish line where our runners were loudly and enthusiastically clapped and cheered across the line. Many of our students improved their placing from the previous year and therefore their personal best result. Thank you for your efforts Karoo Cross Country Team, I am very proud of you all.
A sincere thanks to the parents who assisted at the finish line and who came to support Karoo. Each student was a 'winner' in my eyes, with the following students qualifying to compete at the Division Cross Country on June 3rd- Ella S, Will V, Kara O, Danielle C, Kenin T, Lachlan M, Olivia S
