Michelle Davies and Tanya Mollica participated in a workshop to learn about the program. Yesterday they supported staff to use the program and were available to answer questions. At Karoo we use a range of assessment tools to measure student growth; these include observations, conferences, work samples and teacher designed tests. PAT (Progressive Achievement Tests) are an online assessment, that focuses on assessing and monitoring student growth over time. They are underpinned by an understanding that students of the same age and in the same year of school can be at very different points in their learning and development . Maths Online is a similar computer based assessment program used by staff to assist with determining student growth. All assessments inform teachers about future planning and learning for all students. Staff met in teams yesterday to moderate’; moderation is the means by which a school can ensure that teachers across classes make consistent and evidence based judgements about learner achievement. Hazards To ensure the safety of the Karoo community we regularly ensure the environment is checked for hazards and rectified as required. If you notice any tripping hazards in the yard please report them to the school office. On Monday we had some of the concrete paths replaced. Student teachers at Karoo You may have noticed additional staff in some of the classrooms. We support many universities by having student teachers complete their placements in our school. Student teachers learn best when they are supporting a class teacher, observing teaching and learning and having a mentor to assist them. Their role in the classroom is determined by the year of their study. Karoo Kids Trek Around the World! Last Wednesday we celebrated cultural diversity at Karoo. Countries visitedduring the day and evening were Japan, China, Egypt, Mexico and Greece. Some staff were able to share their experiences from travels and family backgrounds with the students. The students engaged in a range of activities learning facts and information about these countries and their culture. Egyptian, Mexican and Greek dancing were highlights for many students. Thanks to the families and visitors who joined in during the morning and evening. National Reconcilliation Week In 2017, we reflect on two significant anniversaries in Australias reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 referendum and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision. May 27—Marks the anniversary of Australias referendum held in 1967 when over 90 per cent of Australians voted to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census. 3 June—Commemorates the High Court of Australias landmark Mabo decision in 1992, which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land—a relationship that existed prior to colonalisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights or Native Title. Last week twelve delegations from across the country met in Central Australia to discuss changes to the Australian Constitution to acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians. All Australians are asked to commemorate these significant milestones in our nations reconciliation journey. G.A.T.E.WAYS and Karoo Primary School are delighted to offer some new Journeys programs in the first half of Term 3. These programs are designed to provide gifted and talented children with opportunities for challenge and extension with a group of ‘like-minded’ peers over a four-week period. G.A.T.E.WAYS is an independent organization offering challenging and enriching activities and experiences to develop and extend highly able children. Programs at Karoo Primary School commence in Term 3, on 25 th July. Cost varies for each program.

Year 1 and 2 children with a love of language, art and writing ‘Punny Poets and Preposterous Painters'

Year 3 and 4 children with a love of science, technology and construction ‘Welcome to M-City: The Testing Ground of the Future’

Year 5 and 6 children with a love of technology and coding ‘SSSSS, HERE COMES PYTHON….. FRIEND OR FOE?’

If interested please see your classroom teacher or myself for more details.

Please remember that as places in the program are limited, expressions of interest for your child to be nominated should be registered with your teacher early to avoid disappointment.
