WESTFIELD FC 28 AUGUST 2018

GOOD AFTERNOON

WELCOME to the RUNNYMEDE STADIUM for the first visit in a long time from Surrey neighbours WESTFIELD FC.

TODAY’S GAMEFor the first time ever we have the pleasure of facing Westfield in a league match. After a long stint as Combined Counties Leagur stalwarts they clearly decided it was time to step up a gear and in the last two seasons finished with these statistics:

2016-17 COM CO-P 44 28 9 7 106 52 93 2/232017-18 COM CO-P 42 34 4 4 145 43 106 1/22

Westfield have this record so far:Date H/A Opponent Competition KO/Score

Sat 11th Aug A Uxbridge Bostik One South Central 2 - 2Sat 18th Aug H Ware Bostik One South Central 3 - 2Tue 21st Aug A Corinthian-Casuals Velocity Trophy Prel 1 - 5Sat 25th Aug A AFC Stoneham FA Cup Prel 0 - 2

In the FA Cup Westfield travelled to Eastleigh based AFC Stoneham, a Sydenhams Wessex League Division 1 outfit who are in their first season in this competition. The ambitious Hampshire side prevailed.I recall two Surrey Senior Cup ties against Westfield, the first about a hundred years ago (it seems) as we won 5-0 with former Brentford striker Paul Walker grabbing three. The other was early in the short-lived dual management career of former players Derek Sweetman and Steve Roberts, which we lost 0-2. Honours are therefore even, historically, and without doubt this will be a tough encounter. One Westfield player who knows his way to our ground is Karle Carder-Andrews, known to us as Karle Andrews when he played for us between 2008 and 2011. We welcome him back while of course hoping he leaves the three points with us. There is a piece on him in this issue. Gary Ross also knows his way here, having played for us in season 2013-14 as we made our first, tentative steps back into the Southern League, and we welcome him back as well.

Page 6: Karle Carder-Andrews and Egham Town  · Web viewFort William's local derby would be with Inverness Clachnacuddin, some 66 miles away, along the shores of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and

With no goals in our opening two league games the management have acted with commendable speed to rectify the situation. We have signed the well-travelled and extremely experienced Kezie Ibe this week, and are delighted to have secured the services of a proven goalscorer. As you can see later in the programme his scoring record is more than a bit decent. The tricky issue of how to pronounce his surname was solved after Saturday’s game; the “I” is short, as in the word “is” and the “be” is “bay”.We travelled to Cobham for our FA Cup tie on Saturday and Kezie did his bit, turning in our third in a 3-1 win. We had taken a 2-0 lead, skipper Greg Haydon showing the way with a superb header and Jermaine Osei poaching a second shortly after. Cobham pulled one back and looked better than their 19th position in the Combined Counties Premier would suggest. Next week we travel to Chalfont St Peter, old foes who always have a warm welcome for us. It was pretty friendly after the match last season as we lost 0-3. The Emirates FA Cup would usually be done on the Monday after the games had been played and hopefully the Bank Holiday will not prevent that being the case this year.In the Velocity Trophy we know we will be at home to Whyteleafe. Our record in cups at their ground is rubbish if we play the landlords, but we have beaten Sheerwater and AC London in the Combined Counties League Cup and last season’s FA Cup respectively at Church Road. In the Surrey Senior Cup we face an October home tie against Raynes Park Vale, the winners playing Virginia Water away. “Waters” have moved away from their Crown Road ground in their home town and play at Windsor’s Stag Meadow ground, from which base they won the Hellenic East Division last season. They won the Surrey Intermediate League (West) Premier Division the season before, and fairly recently tried and failed to establish a base in Mrs Caddy’s field in Whitehall Lane in Egham. The fact that that is where the Egham Royal Show is held on August Bank Holidays probably contributed to that plan’s failure. I would imagine this would be the first time they have played in the Senior Surrey county competition in a very long time. We have played them once, away, in the FA Vase, in season 1977-78, a John Carter hat-trick seeing us through. Our last meeting was in something called the Surrey County Shield (I think), a round robin competition to be woven into the early stages of a season sometime in the 70s(?). Nobody seemed that bothered with it. I know we lost to them. Other details are hazy. However, to face them again we have to face an RPV side who play in the Combined Counties Premier, like FA Vase opponents Cobham, and who will want to turn us over. Even though RPV are currently just one place above Cobham we will have learnt that that County Cup will not be one to take lightly. Finally, we are very pleased to say that we now have a defibrillator at the club. The saving for the club of printing costs for the programmes has been very usefully diverted to this potentially life-saving apparatus.

THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING THIS MATCH

THE EMIRATES FA CUP - PRELIMINARY ROUNDCOBHAM 1 (1)

Greg Haydon (25), Jermaine Osei (27), Kezie Ibe (74)

EGHAM TOWN took a stumbling step into the FA Cup first qualifying round at the Reg Madgwick ground against Combined Counties League Premier Division side Cobham on Saturday.Neither side had had a great start to the season, the home side holding just one point from their first four games, but they had beaten Southern Counties East League Premier Division side Sheppey United in the

Extra Preliminary Round. Egham had lost their first two Bostik Southern Central matches, without scoring a goal. The Sarnies moved to rectify that with the signing of Kezie Ibe. Known as a prolific goal scorer he showed he has not lost his touch with a goal on his debut. That sealed the win as Egham were finally looking comfortable against their lower ranked hosts. Cobham were clearly given instruction to test their guests, and played some decent attacking football that did what it was meant to – cause Egham headaches. Matthew West forced a very good save out of Xavi Comas Leon in the eighth minute in a period when the Sarnies were struggling to get some kind of midfield control. Egham, welcoming back Ashley Lodge and Danny Julienne in the middle, and with Joe Pratley-Jones back after suspension, gave a debut to centre back Owen Roberts. After 20 minutes or so of not being able to test home keeper Lee Norman finally it clicked for the Bostik Leaguers. Pratley—Jones took a throw in on the right and skipper Greg Haydon skilfully looped a header into Norman’s top left corner. Somewhat taken aback, the home side were now faced by a more fluent Egham, an Egham who took only two minutes to go 2-0 up. Good pressure forced the defence to panic, Michael Kalu had a shot blocked and Jermaine Osei bundled home from six yards. It could and almost certainly should have been the trigger for a totally dominant performance but the home side recovered and pulled one back with Callum

Page 8: Karle Carder-Andrews and Egham Town  · Web viewFort William's local derby would be with Inverness Clachnacuddin, some 66 miles away, along the shores of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and

Wilson’s 20 yarder into Comas Leon’s bottom right corner seven minutes from the half time break.

Egham grew into the game more in the second half, once they had seen Mo Diakite’s free kick wasted after a foul by Roberts. Egham boss Simon Lane introduced Ibe for Osei on the hour and six minutes later he had his first chance off a Julienne pass but

Norman just managed to stick out his right foot to deny him. A minute later it looked like Ibe, running onto a pass by new fans’ favourite Tayshan Hayden-Smith, had been tripped in the box, and the referee had his whistle in his mouth before waving play on. Ibe was not to be denied and fourteen minutes into his Egham career swept the ball home after the visitors had dazzled the home back four with some clever interplay. Kalu gave way to another debutant, Meshach Williams, and Josh Andrew replaced Roberts, who, like some of his team mates had been at the wrong end of some heftily industrial, and unpunished, challenges by Cobham players. Hayden-Smith, known as “T”, was almost at the end of a curling cross by Andrew and Norman had to produce a fine save to tip over a rasping drive from Pratley-Jones.With the draw for the next round not yet made Egham await their fate, but will certainly go into Bank Holiday Monday’s home match against Westfield with new vigour in their step. There were certainly some excellent moves tried out and the stiffening of the side with experience looks to be working. On Saturday the Sarnies visit Chalfont St Peter in a league match. EGHAM TOWN FC: Xavi Comas Leon, Greg Haydon (Captain), Owen Roberts, Joe Pratley-Jones, Tom Windsor, Michael Kalu, Ashley Lodge, Danny Julienne, Jermaine Osei, Tayshan Hayden-Smith, Enock Soganile. Subs: Paolo Giamettei, Jeremiah Debayo, Kezie Ibe (Osei, 60), Josh Andrew (Roberts, 81), Meshach Williams (Kalu, 83).

A NEW MAN AND A RETURNEREGHAM TOWN WELCOME KEZIE IBE

We are delighted to have signed Kezie Ibe, and even more delighted that he scored on his debut. That should help him settle into the squad. Even before he scored there were signs that his new team-mates were seeking him out. I found this on t’net and nicked it:From Hendon FC’s Greensnet: Experienced striker who signed in July 2014 from Basingstoke Town. Began his career at Arsenal as a trainee before moving to AFC Bournemouth, and has

since played for numerous clubs including Yeovil Town, Aylesbury United, Canvey Island, Chelmsford City, Ebbsfleet United, Farnborough, Eastbourne Borough, Sutton United and Margate. Departed in December 2017 for Harlow Town after the form of Niko Muir and Zak Joseph, amongst others, kept him out of the starting line-up. A true professional who served the club well.

Karle Carder-Andrews and Egham TownKarle-Carder Andrews, or Karle Andrews as he was known to us when he was a Sarnie, put in more than several decents shifts for us in midfield when we were in the Combined Counties League. The script below is on a long lend from Wikipedia:Following a break from football, Carder-Andrews signed for Combined

Counties League Premier Division side Egham Town in August 2008.[ He later stated that he signed for the club to get fit, having [become] overweight after his release from Brentford. He made his debut in a 2–2 draw with North Greenford United on 9 August 2008. Carder-Andrews scored his first goal for the club late in the campaign, netting in a 3–2 win over Sandhurst Town on 25 April. Carder-Andrews made 40 appearances during the 2008–09 season and scored one goal. The Sarnies found their form in the 2009–10 season, finishing fourth, with Carder-Andrews making 28 appearances and scoring two goals. A mid-table season followed in 2010–11, with Carder-Andrews making 31 appearances and scoring two goals. He departed the club in October 2011, having made 99 appearances and scored five goals during just over three years at the Runnymede Stadium.

Westfield FC – Club History(also on www.westfield-fc.com at 06 Aug 18)

Westfield Football Club was formed in 1953 as Westfield Boys Club, playing in the Woking and District League and also running a

youth team.

The 1950sFrom the start the Club had success in the competitions it entered. Among the trophies won in the early years were the Surrey Youth Invitation Cup in 1953/54, the Surrey Junior Charity Cup in 1954/55 and 1955/56, the Surrey Junior Cup (at the first attempt) in 1955/56 and the Surrey Youth Cup in 1956/57.Following several seasons in local league football, the Club made the break into Surrey Intermediate football using the present ground at Woking Park, Kingfield. Successes soon came and, after becoming League Champions and Cup winners on several occasions in the subsequent seasons, the Club decided to apply for senior status. The application was accepted in 1964 and after one season in the Parthenon League, Westfield met the necessary ground grading requirements and joined the Surrey Senior League. The 1960sWestfield’s future success in senior football sprang from their ability to attract the best local youngsters, and they were successful in winning the Surrey Youth Cup again in 1966/67 and 1969/70, and the Surrey Youth Shield in 1969/70 and 1970/71. This talent matured and there followed three tremendous seasons for the senior side, when they won the Surrey Senior League Cup in 1971/72, followed by the League and Cup double in 1972/73, and the League Championship again in 1973/74.The 1970s and 1980sThe Surrey Senior League was disbanded and reformed as the Combined Counties Football League in 1978, and Westfield FC became founder members and have retained membership to date. Success, however, has been more difficult to achieve and in recent times the closest the senior team has come to honours was in 1989/90, when they lost the final of the Combined Counties League Cup to Hartley Wintney in extra time.

2000-2003In recent seasons with former Woking player, John Cassidy as manager, the senior side improved their league position, finishing sixth in season 2000/01. That season saw the Club enter the Carlsberg FA Vase for the first time, performing beyond expectations before losing in the Fourth Round to Ryman League Arlesey Town, on the way beating Wantage Town, Lewes and Bowers United.Season 2002/03 saw Westfield enter the FA Cup for the first time, losing at home to Dorking in the Preliminary Round.Westfield continued to compete at youth level and they won the Combined Counties Youth League Cup in 1991/92, as well as being runners-up in the League. Following the installation of floodlights in 1998, the U18 team joined the Southern Youth Floodlight League as members of the Western Division. The Club also run an U16 team playing in the West Surrey Boys League. This is currently the Club’s most successful side, last season competing at U15 level the team won the League Championship, the League Cup and the Surrey County Cup.2003-2006Following the end of the 2003/04 season, Westfield lost both First and Reserve Team managers. John Cassidy moved to Frimley Green, and thereafter back to Farnham Town, and Graham Pope moved to Godalming & Guildford to manage their reserve team in the Suburban league. Westfield recruited Paul Donaghy from Guildford-based Merrow as first-team manager, and Dave Robson – long-time Westfield player – took over the reserves. At the end of 2005/06 Westfield were relegated to the 1st Division, due to new ground-grading regulations after a very acrimonious conflict with the league. Numerous commitments from league officials were reneged upon, and after months of appeals and meetings, Westfield had to accept their unwelcome fate. After a mid-table Division 1 season and partly because of the league-enforced relegation, Manager Paul Donaghy decided to resign as First Team manager to join Godalming and Reserve Team manager Dave Robson also quit. The team of ex-player Martin Powell, ex-Spurs stalwart David Howells and coach John Comer took over the running of the senior teams for the start of the 2007/08 season.

Page 25: Karle Carder-Andrews and Egham Town  · Web viewFort William's local derby would be with Inverness Clachnacuddin, some 66 miles away, along the shores of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and

2007-2010In the close season of 2007/08, following a highly credible 4th place finish, Martin resigned as manager due to personal circumstances; his departure signalled the exits of both David Howells and John Comer. In July 2008 the position of 1st Team Manager was filled by Steve Plunkett, the ex-Godalming Town Reserves boss, though hw was replaced within 4 months by the returning Dave Robson, as the club attempted to rebuild following a mass exodus of players.Dave Robson did a fine job stabilizing the club, but after an indifferent 2009/10 was replaced by joint managers, Craig Moore and John Comer.Off the pitch there was good news, as building of the new facilities commenced in 2010/11 and it promised to be a good season as the management duo assembled the best squad since the 2008 season. However, despite some wonderful results, the team struggled to find consistency, and finished a disappointing 13th in the table. There was better news for the reserves who finished 4th in the reserve league, and reached the final of the league cup, where they went down to double-winning side Mole Valley SCR.2011-2015During the summer of 2011, Craig Moore decided to step down to concentrate on playing, leaving John Comer as sole manager. He promoted Kevin Bailey from the reserves to be his assistant, and following Dave Kelly’s resignation as reserve team manager appointed David Robertson. In May 2011 the old pitch was dug up and raised a metre, before being re-seeded and in June the old clubhouse was demolished. The club moved into the new facilities in August 2011 with a thrilling opening match in the FA Cup against Peacehaven & Telscombe, in which the Sussex side eventually ran out 6-3 winners, in front of a crowd of 190. The following month a new record attendance for a league fixture at Woking Park was set when 325 witnessed the fixture against Guernsey. The season saw another improvement on the pitch, where a position of 8th was achieved and the team reached a cup final for the first time in nearly 20 years. However they went down 4-2 to Warlingham on the day.The following season the Club gained promotion in third place, and played Walton Casuals Reserves in the final of the Surrey Premier Cup, going down 2 goals to 1 in a close game.In season 2013/14, with John Comer continuing as manager, the Club had their best league finish since 1981, ending in fourth place.

With John Comer’s departure, Martin Beard was appointed for the 2014-15 season. After a run of indifferent results, Martin was replaced by Dan Snare, who improved the side to finish mid-table.2016 to dateFor the 2016-17 season, Tony Reid was appointed manager, and enjoyed a stunning season, finishing second in the League and winning the League Cup in May. The following season the Club continued to play exciting, attacking football, scoring an amazing 145 goals, whilst only conceding only 45, and became deserved Champions with a fantastic 106 league points. As the 2018-19 season begins, we say farewell to the Combined Counties League after 40 years of continuous competition, and start an exciting journey into Step 4 of non-league football. We wish Tony and his management team well for yet another tremendous season.
