Kappa Keynotes The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International-Eta State-North Carolina Region VIII Kappa Chapter-Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Vol. 74, No. 5 May & June 2016 The President s Message Dear Kappa Sisters, Volunteerism is one hallmark of our Kappa values. We’d like to recognize those of us who give of their time for the welfare of others. There’s no mistaking that Kappa members volunteer with numerous activities. Be it with church, school, community organizations and fund raisers, Kappa sisters are generous with their time involving community activities. One of the points on the Recognition of Chapter Achievement form which we submit to Eta State each March 1 st speaks to member volunteers. While we will receive points toward our recognition score, more importantly, recognizing our members within the chapter for their selflessness is our primary objective. We want to shout your praises, pat you on the back, and give you some glory at Kappa! Attached as the final page of this newsletter is a recording sheet to list your volunteer activities and the number of hours spent on these projects. Please begin keeping a record NOW of your volunteer undertakings. If you can think back to March 1, 2016, those items may also be included. Forms will be collected at next January’s meeting. You may record anticipated service up to February 28, 2017. Tape this form inside a kitchen cupboard or on your refrigerator, or copy and paste into your computer. We want to thank you! Heads Up from the Education Law & Policy Committee

By: Susan Phipps, Chair of the Education Law & Policy Committee

Please alert your members that the General Assembly in Raleigh is contemplating major changes to the NC Teachers and State Em- ployees’ Retirement Plan. Under consideration is the discontinuation of the Defined-Benefits Retirement System and the introduction of a Defined-Contributions System. The difference is stark and has implications for North Carolina’s ability to attract high quality educators and other workers to our state in the future.

The current Defined-Benefits System has state employees contributing 6% of their salaries and the state contributing another 9.15% for retirement. These funds are invested and monitored by the state treasurer and results in a guaranteed pension based on a standard formula of service time and money invested. The Defined-Contribution System, on the other hand, has no guaranteed benefits and all the risks and benefits of any investment are shouldered by the employee instead of the state. Retirement benefits will fluctuate with market ebbs and flows. (During the stock market crash of 2008 this retirement system would have been very debilitating for retirees.) Money invested by an employee would also be subject to management fees.

Please do all you can do to head this idea off before it can get any traction. Contact your Senator and Representative to urge their support for a Defined-Benefits Retirement System. To find your representatives’ contact information, go to www.ncleg.net and click on “Who represents me?” at the top right side of the homepage. Find your District numbers for House and Senate on the map, put in the numbers and see your representatives’ contact information. Committee meetings happen before the 2016 session begins on April 25, so NOW is the time to act!

While waiting on jury duty in 1999, I developed an outline of a unit of study called "Toys Through Time". I wanted a special way to remember the 20th Century with my students. I brought the idea back to my colleagues, Betty Bell and Donna Nesbit, and, working with The Levine Museum of the New South, we created lessons for this unit.Students researched toys of the 20th Century such as the Teddy Bear, Monopoly, Twister, GI Joe, Barbie, etc. They were given a choice of pairing the toy with a 20th Century event, concern or decade or show changes over time. Some examples were: GI Joe Fights Hunger, Teddy Bear on the Titanic, Waropoly, Flying through Time (Wright Brothers, Charles Lindberg, Amelia Earhart, Neil Armstrong). Students displayed their projects at the museum and awards were presented. This unit gave students such as a strong sense of history, strengthened their research skills, and enhanced their creative thinking. In 2000, this curriculum won a national award through NAGC (National Association for Gifted Children). It was one of nine units across the nation deemed outstanding curriculum. I did this unit every year until I retired in 2010. After I left, it was continued. This year it has spread to 10 schools, and projects will be displayed on April 21 and 22 at The Levine Museum of the New South. This is the 17th Annual Toys Through Time. Betty and I will be attending along with all the proud parents as proud parents of this idea. This is what makes teaching rewarding!
