DKG

South  Eastern

Regional

Conference  By  Tisa  Clark  of  Kappa  Chapter  Charlotte,  NC

The   South   Eastern   Regional   Conference   held   in  Savannah,  GA  offered  many  opportunities  for  exploring  new  ideas,  learning  new  things,  and  meeting  educators  from   around   the   country.       Over   700   DKG   sisters  shared  knowledge,  ideas  and  friendship.

One   of   the   more   memorable   presentations   featured  author  Polly  Letofsky.    Polly  is  the  first  woman  to  walk  around   the   world.     During   her   presentation,   she  detailed   her   five   year   journey   with   stories   of   the  supportive  people  she  met  and  the  unusual  places  she  stayed   (sometimes   in   a   tent   in   a   park   but   not   in   tall  grass  because  of  poisonous  snakes.)      Polly  personifies  the   spirit   that   compels   you   to   overcome   life’s  challenges  one  step  at  a  time.

I   encourage   each   Kappa   Sister   to   attend   one  conference.  This  positive  experience  connects  you  with  sisters   throughout   the   state,   country   and   world   and  allows   you   to   learn   about   experiences   beyond   the  typical  educational  realm.    DKG  is  truly  an  international  society   with   many   members   who   connect   with   each  other.      Nashville  here  we  come!!!!

(Pictured  Above:  Tisa  Clark  and  Debbi  Dryden  attended  the  Southeast  Regional  Conference  in  Savannah,  GA  in  July.)

Invest  in  Kappa            By  Brenda  Coble  of  Kappa  Chapter,  Charlotte,  NC  A  new  year  to  celebrate  education  is  approaching.    As  a  Delta  Kappa  Gamma  member,  you  have  a  chance  to  help  make  a  difference  in  the  educational  community.    You  can  do  this  by  helping  to  make  programs  for  those  who  are  in  the  classroom  possible.

Unfortunately,  our  dues  will  only  go  so  far.    The  Executive  Board  has  decided  to  start  an  Invest  in  Kappa  campaign.    The  Board  is  asking  that  each  member  Invest  in  Kappa,  by  making  an  optional  tax  deductible  donation  to  Kappa  between  now  and  the  end  of  October  to  help  fund  the  programs  and  projects  that  will  be  planned  for  the  2015-‐2016  year.

We  will  continue  Bunco,  Books  and  Brags,  and  50-‐50  to  help  raise  money  for  our  budget.  Remember,  the  Finance  Committee  creates  the  year’s  budget,  based  on  estimated  funds  and  collected  funds  by  the  end  of  October.

If  anyone  has  any  additional  ideas  for  fund  raising,  please  contact  Brenda  Coble,  Ways  and  Means  Chairperson  or  Jeannette  Carofano,  President.

Please  Invest  in  Kappa  according  to  your  heart  for  Kappa  and  for  your  fellow  educators.

Connect  globally  through  DKG  online  Members   can   now   connect   online   with   DKG   members   around   the   world   through   the  member  portal.  Now  on  the  DKG  website,  members  will  be  able  to  sign  in  to  a  private  site  for  DKG  members  only.  Members  will  use  the  six  digit  member  ID  as  the  username  and  the  default  password  (contact  [email protected]  for  password),  to  log  in.  After  successfully  logging  in,  members   can   change   the  password   to   a   preferred   password.  However,   the   username  will  remain  the  member  ID.

Although  the  new  website  coming  soon  will  have  a  “sign  in”  area,  members  can  temporarily  access   the   member   portal   through   the   “My   DKG”   banner   in   the   Member   Center   (gray  banners  in  the  lower  right  portion  of  the  home  page).  By  signing  in,  a  member  may  access  and   revise   her   contact   information,   create   a  member   profile,   and   if   desired,   allow   other  members   to   connect  with   her   through   a  private  members   only  directory   (members  must  choose   this   option   within   their   profile).   Members   may   also   join   social   and   professional  communities  in  order  to  network  with  other  DKG  educators  throughout  the  Society.

State Budget Update By: Dr. Elaine Jenkins, Chair,

Educational Law and Policy Committee

The NC House and Senate have offered two very different versions of the state budget for the next two years. While both budgets have issues with which Eta State has some concern, the House budget is much closer to the priorities which members of Eta State have identified.

Note the proposed percentage increase in funds from each chamber to the three major areas of education: House Senate K-12 6.40%+ 2.18%+ Community College 3.74%+ .29%+ UNC System 5.26%+ 2.56%+

The House version raises beginning teacher pay to $35,000 and calls for a 2% salary increase for certified educators at each tier along with 2% for non-certified employees. It also calls for a 2% cost of living raise for retirees. The House version maintains the current level of teacher assistants.

The Senate version includes pay raises for teachers but concentrates those raises in teachers in the early years. This version eliminates 8,500 teacher assistants over the next two years with a plan to hire more teachers in the lower grades and lower the pupil teacher ratio. The Senate also proposes to eliminate medical insurance for educators and state employees hired after January 1, 2016 after they retire and until they qualify for Medicare.

There are a number of other differences in the two budget proposals that you may want to research. Because the differences are significant, budget negotiations could be long, making local hiring decisions problematic. I encourage you to contact your legislators to support the House version.

The July/August 2015 DKG News is now online!

There is much to explore in this online-only issue of DKG News, including the

announcement of Sandra Smith Bull as the new Executive Director of DKG and It’s

conversation with GenY members.
