Advancing Educational Opportunities for more Hawaiians.

Page 2: KAPF 2006 07 Annual Report

To seek and develop new and diverse resourcesto support the ever increasing educational needsand potential of the Hawaiian people.

During her lifetime, Ke Ali‘i Bernice Pauahi Bishop witnessedfirst-hand the rapidly shifting social and economic landscape ofHawai‘i. She realized the need for an enduring plan to guide herpeople through the world changing around them; and knew thatwith the right educational opportunities, Hawaiians could beprepared to compete and become leaders on every front. With eyesset firmly upon both the remarkable heritage and uncertain futureof her people, she wrote her Last Will and Testament in 1883 andput that plan in motion.

Her foresight has proven incredibly accurate. Kamehameha Schools, which Pauahi founded in her great-grandfather’s name, hasproduced four generations of “good and industrious men and

women,” with scores of leaders in every industry.Kamehameha Schools currently serves more than

5,400 students on three campuses andanother 36,000 in community

programs statewide. Wonderfulprogress is being made; and yet, weknow it is not enough.

At Ke Ali‘i Pauahi Foundation, we continue to set our eyes onimproving the future of the Hawaiian people by supporting effortsto extend educational opportunities to more Hawaiians. We areproviding this support in two ways: by awarding educationalscholarships to individuals, and providing support for educationalprograms serving Hawaiians in our communities. While greatstrides have been made in Pauahi’s footsteps, there is still much tobe done.

There are still Hawaiians in every community who could benefitfrom programs or scholarships that the Foundation supports -many are friends and family that you hold dear. It is with a senseof great urgency that we work to increase and extend our resourcesand we invite you to be a part of this living legacy with us.Working together we can fulfill our “kuleana e mālama i ka lāhuiHawai‘i” as Pauahi did for so many of us not too long ago.

toAs we reflect on the accomplishments

of the past year the word “foundation” takes ona special meaning. A foundation offers supportand is often considered the most important partof any structure. A solid foundation gives youthe necessary strength to build upon. We greatlyappreciate the generosity that you, KamehamehaSchools’ alumni and friends have provided KeAli‘i Pauahi Foundation (KAPF) this year, tohelp lay the foundation that will allow us tocontinue to offer educational opportunities formore Hawaiians.

In fiscal year 2006-2007, the Foundation hasexperienced growth on many levels; the numberof individuals and organizations who have contributed has grown (817 newdonors in FY2007 up from 475 new donors in FY2006 representing a 72%increase); the Foundation itself has grown to become fully staffed and morecapable of meeting the needs of donors and scholarship recipients.

It’s heartwarming to see so many of Ke Ali‘i Pauahi’s beneficiaries emulatingher benevolence by giving generously so that the lives of another generation ofHawaiians may also be enriched. During FY 2006-2007 the KamehamehaSchools Class of 1956 endowed a grant for haumāna demonstrating aninterest in Hawaiian language, culture and history; Kamehameha SchoolsHawai‘i Class of 2007 “Nā Olonā” created an annual scholarship to beawarded over a five-year period; Kamehameha Schools Maui Class of 2007launched an annual scholarship to support graduating seniors from highschools across the Island of Maui; the Choy-Kee ‘ohana established ascholarship in honor of Choy Kee and Victoria H. Akana, who, like Ke Ali‘iPauahi, held deep the traditional Hawaiian value that knowledge is sacred;and KS ‘58 alumnae Jackie Mahi Erickson and her husband Bruce Ericksongenerously donated their treasured painting of Hilo Bay by artist JosephNāwahī to Kamehameha Schools. KAPF has set up the Joseph NāwahīScholarship in recognition of this special gift.

Even non-beneficiaries see the wisdom ofsupporting Pauahi’s legacy. Tesoro Corporationjoined us in extending Ke Ali‘i Pauahi’s legacy byestablishing a scholarship for Hawai‘i public highschool graduates interested in the trade industry.Mahalo piha to all of our donors!

In addition to raising funds for new and existingscholarships, KAPF has broadened its scope ofgiving opportunities to include support for thefollowing: Advancing the Hawaiian Language,Charter School Support, Early ChildhoodEducation and Literacy, and Land Stewardship.More can be learned about these avenues ofsupport on page 9 of this report and our website.

Throughout this report you will find stories and quotes from donors andscholarship recipients that are both inspiring and demonstrative of the need todo more. We have made significant progress this year to build the foundation, and have laid the groundwork for many great things to come. With yourcontinued support and participation, we are confident that KAPF will play asignificant role in providing a strong foundation for our haumāna pursuinghigher education.

charter school supportOne of the ways in which Pauahi’s legacy is being extended to reachhaumāna who are not able to attend Ks’ campuses is through charterschool support. KAPF is helping to build awareness and get support forthese courageous schools that give haumāna a choice at a culturally richeducation.

Hawaiian-focused start-up public charter schools offer unique servicesto children and families based on culturally grounded pedagogy andinstruction. Haumāna attending these charter schools achieve markedacademic improvement, become leaders in all that they do and representour kūpuna well.

the demand for culturally relevant education is growing. Most charterschools have wait lists of students who would like to attend but cannotbecause of limited funding for facilities and operations. some schools evenoperate out of temporary facilities. Kamehameha schools and otherorganizations have been helping with their daily operational needs and facilityimprovements. While these schools are doing an excellent job with thelimited resources they have, they could do even more with our kōkua.

early childhood education and Literacythe early childhood education and Literacy fund is very important toKAPF’s mission to serve more children of Hawaiian ancestry. did you knowthat many of our keiki cannot read, write or do elementary math by 3rdgrade? By providing literacy support to students, their parents and caregivers, and by promoting culturally relevant learning, these keiki will get the kōkuathey need to achieve future success in school.

Additionally, KAPF and the Harold K.L. castle Foundation havepartnered to support literacy education program in Windward O‘ahupublic schools. studies have shown that increasing competence in writingand reading predicts future success in school. simple skills that many ofus take for granted are not guaranteed, so the support that comes fromour Foundation and others makes a lifetime difference.

Advancing the Hawaiian Languagecontributions made to KAPF for the purpose of Advancing the HawaiianLanguage will assist efforts to preserve Hawaiian language and heritage, likethe work of ‘Aha Pūnana Leo, Hawaiian immersion schools or other effortsto build and share ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i. KAPF is also working with KamehamehaPublishing to distribute books written in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i to K-12 schools inHawai‘i.

Land stewardshipFunds raised through KAPF will support efforts to e mālama i ka ‘āina.Historically, land has always been an integral part of Hawaiian culture.through your donations, KAPF can support those who are preservingthese precious lands for all generations, assuring that precious natural andcultural resources are cared for.

Mahina’s love of aviation began at the age of 12 and grewover the years as she spent time flying back and forthbetween her family home on Kaua‘i and Kamehamehaschools Kapālama during her school breaks. Becoming apilot, and flying to exotic locations around the world becamemore than just a dream, it became a career choice.Motivated, commited and organized, Mahina applied andwas admitted to the embry riddle Aeronautical University- college of Aviation.

Mahina is deeply aware of the opportunities that haveopened up to her both through her education and hermother’s enduring encouragement. Understanding thatcollege is an essential step towards becoming a pilot her hard

work and achievement have prepared her to reach her goalsof pursuing a career in aeronautical engineering.

Mahina’s personal goals extend beyond becoming a pilot.she hopes to be able to work in collaboration with others toeventually establish a program that caters to Hawaiianstudents who want to become involved in aviation andaeronautics. she envisions a program that will provide botheducational and financial support to those in the Hawaiiancommunity who also dream of spreading their wings.

this scholarship, established by the Kamehameha schoolsclass of 1973 in recognition of their 30th class reunion, supports worthy individuals in their educational pursuits.

he Kamehameha Schools Class of 1957 was the first classto establish a scholarship with funds raised at their their30th reunion in 1987 which was moved to Ke Ali‘i PauahiFoundation when the foundation was created. They celebrate their 50threunion this year and take pride in the fact that they have stayed together as agroup for five decades; playing golf, going on cruises, and sharing island to islandweekends.

Over the years, they tried various different fundraising ideas from sellingPortuguese sausage and kalua pig to coordinating beer busts, before strikingupon a winning formula. They wanted something that would eliminate barriersto participation, as well as the need for cold storage. They decided to ask theirclassmates to contribute to the class fund, on a dues basis, that could becollected over time. Some found it convenient to contribute monthly. They settargeted goals and made a special push for donations of at least $25 per year forfive years. It helped that they had an excellent Treasurer, Melsa Takamatsu whostayed on top of the dues payments.

To help promote their fundraising goals and to keep up with wala‘au, they alsopublish a newsletter, coordinated by Ku‘ulei Reyes. The newsletter also reportson group activities such as their community service day at Lunalilo Home, where they sang and danced for the residents.

With the understanding that there will be fewer classmates at their next reunionin 2012, they ambitiously took full advantage of alumni week activities.Planning the events provided them with another opportunity to worktogether. Lynette Paglinawan shared, “It was satisfying that so manyclassmates could attend and share in the giving effort.” They held a banquetdinner and silent auction attended by 90 classmates, which raised anadditional $10,000 for their class scholarship fund. Many hands and heartscontributed to making the Kamehameha Schools Class of 1957 50threunion a success. I mua!

unrestricted Donationsunrestricted gifts allow the Foundation the flexibility to respond to the areas of mostcritical need. These outright gifts include cash, appreciated property (real estate, stock) ortangible personal property.

Tribute GiftsTribute gifts are made in honor or in memory of individuals or organizations that haveinspired you or touched your heart.

Restricted DonationsRestricted gifts define a program, project or scholarship of special interest to the donor. Inmany instances, these gifts are named to honor or memorialize a special family member, friend or colleague. This is a meaningful way to honor loved ones in perpetuity.

Future GiftsA future gift is arranged now, but the Foundation’s use of the funds is delayed to some futuretime. The most common type of future gift is a charitable bequest such as Princess Pauahiprovided in her will. The money from a bequest becomes available for financial assistance atthe end of the donor’s life. Other ways of making a future gift are naming the Foundation asbeneficiary of some portion of an IRA or other retirement plan, naming it as beneficiary of alife insurance policy, or establishing a charitable remainder trust with the principal payable tothe Foundation when the trust terminates. These future gifts are sometimes called “plannedgifts.” KAPF can work with you and your professional advisors in arranging such gifts.

Corporate Matching GiftsCorporations will often match an employee’s charitable gift dollar for dollar. Please checkwith your employer to see if your contribution qualifies for this category.

Gifts made to Ke Ali‘i Pauahi Foundation (KAPF) reflect giftsfrom the heart and will help to carry forward the vision Ke Ali‘iPauahi had to empower Hawaiians through education. KAPF is a501 (c)(3) tax exempt organization; therefore, contributionsmade to the Foundation are tax deductible to the extentpermitted by law. Additionally, 100 percent of your gift goes tohelp others as Kamehameha Schools covers KAPF’sadministrative or overhead expenses.
