office of developmentKMC Annual Fund Bridge The Gap UpdatesI am thrilled to announce that the 2014-15 KMC Annual Fund was our most successful campaign to date! Together with KMC parents, students, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents and friends, over $328,000 was raised to Bridge The Gap. Thank you to all who participated!

While it would be nice to say that money is for “extras”, the KMC Annual Fund was never designed to be a rainy day fund. One-third of the money is earmarked for the Open The Doors campaign - to provide a Catholic education for students that come from parishes that struggle financially. The other two-thirds goes to offset costs not included in our student fees. That includes teacher raises and budgeted projects such as technology and security enhancements, academic materials, fine arts supplies, and athletic needs.

We hope the momentum from this year carries us forward into the

2015-16 Annual Fund. We will continue to use the theme of Bridge The Gap, as that has resonated with our Crusader family. We hope to tailor this year’s materials around the areas of interest for our diverse community. Thank you again for your extraordinary gifts for the Catholic education of our students.

2015 ReunionsThere have been eight reunions planned for 2015. Seven of the reunions have been or will be hosted in the KMC Commons. We are thrilled to bring so many Crusaders back! For many, this will be their first time to see the new gym, commons and renovated chapel. Included in the school tour is the Fr. Kapaun memorabilia housed in our building. A list of all upcoming reunions is included on the next page.

Alumni DirectoryKMC enlisted the services of Harris Connect to produce the 2015 KMC Alumni Directory. Our vision is to produce an alumni directory every five years. If you have been contacted by Harris Connect, you are welcome to verify your contact information to be included in the directory. Their effort to collect names is so they can also sell directories. A soft bound book is available for $80, plus $20 shipping; a hard bound book is available for $100 plus $20 shipping. They offer a payment plan, if needed.

While the alumni directory is a fun tool for our Crusader nation, it is not a fundraiser for the school. If you choose not to buy one or choose not to provide your contact information, that is most certainly your choice. Whether or not you participate does not hurt/help the school in any way. KMC does not receive any supplement for the sales, so please do not feel pressure to purchase one.

Additionally, there may still be some alumni who purchased a directory in 2013, who never received their book, and wondering what to do about it. As you may recall from the Fall 2014 Quest and an email blast in May 2015, the contracted Alumni Research Group sold directories to dozens of alumni, only to be found as a fraudulent company and are currently under investigation by the Attorney General of the State of Florida, Consumer Fraud Division. KMC was never provided a list of paying alumni and never received any money. We are sorry to say that it is unlikely anyone will be reimbursed for those directories. If you were affected by the scam, please notify Chenay Sloan, Director of Development. The current project with Harris Connect is in no way affiliated with the fraudulent group.

Renee LaFever Memorial Scholarship FundAt the 2015 KMC Convocation, the first-ever recipient of the Renee LaFever Memorial Scholarship Fund was awarded to senior Alondra Contreras. Alondra plans to attend Wichita State University next year and will use the scholarship toward her degree.

The Renee LaFever Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Renee LaFever, a selfless teacher, mentor and friend to thousands of KMC students during her 25+ year career. She encouraged students to live their faith and exemplified what it means to be a follower of Christ. This scholarship is awarded to a senior who embodies the characteristics that Renee found so important and also imitates her “unbounded capacity to love”.

On Saturday, May 23, 2015, I had the privilege of witnessing Bishop Carl Kemme ordain to the priesthood five men from

the Wichita Diocese. A class of five new priests was special enough, but what made this ordination special for me was that the fab five of new priests included Kapaun Mt. Carmel alumnus, Reverend Father Zachary Pinaire ‘05. Father Zach, who is assigned to be the Parochial Vicar (Associate Pastor) at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Wichita, serving under another KMC alumnus, Father Sherman Orr ‘83, credits his studies and formation at Kapaun Mt. Carmel with assisting him in fully discerning his call to the priesthood and in fully preparing himself for the rigors of the seminary and priestly life.

We thank God for the gift of Father Zach’s ministry, and that of the other four men ordained with him. We pray as a school for God’s blessings on Father Zach as he begins his ministry, and we pray for the remaining 14 members of our alumni body who are currently in preparation for the priesthood or the religious life. Their example, perseverance and faith make visible to all of us the beauty and purpose of our school’s great legacy founded on its mission to educate and form the total person in the image of Jesus Christ.

We are truly proud of the 128-year legacy that our school enjoys. Each of you alumni of Mt. Carmel Academy, Chaplain Kapaun Memorial and Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School has contributed to this legacy. We promise to you our best efforts to be good stewards of this legacy and to continue to build upon it with excellence in all that we do.

As we begin the 2015-16 school year, full of promise and high expectations, I thank you all, on behalf of all our students, administration, faculty and staff, for your prayers and support for Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

God bless,

Rob Knapp

The scholarship was made possible by the outpouring of support to the scholarship fund. A $10,000 match challenge was offered, and we are proud to say that it was met! Over $20,000 was donated to the scholarship fund which will allow us to award the scholarship for years to come. Thank you to all who made this dream a reality in the memory of our beloved Renee LaFever.

Wall of HonorThe newly commissioned KMC Wall of Honor will soon feature KMC alumni currently serving in the armed forces - active duty, guard or reserve.  We are very proud of our men and women alumni protecting our freedoms and civil liberties, just like our namesake Fr. Emil Kapaun.  This wall is prominently featured in the walkway between the main academic hall of the school and the commons so the students at KMC will pass it every day.  We hope it will be a reminder to all of the sacrifice, pride and legacy of our military alumni.

We need photos: If you or someone you know is a KMC alumnus in active duty, guard or reserve, please email a photo to Chenay Sloan at [email protected] and include the name, KMC graduation year, branch of service, current rank, and current station.  We would prefer to have their portrait headshot in uniform but if that is not available, a different photo in their uniform would work too.

In future phases of the Wall of Honor, we plan to add recognition for our veterans, living and deceased.  We hope to honor all our alumni who have served in the military current or past. If you have any questions, please contact Chenay Sloan, Director of Development at 316-636-9612 or [email protected].

Want to help defray some of the construction costs?   Help KMC Bridge The Gap through the Annual Fund.   Donate today www.kapaun.org with a designation to the Wall of Honor.

KMC Alumni Association Advisory CouncilWe need your help! The KMC Alumni Association is launching soon. We need advisory council members to help us develop the KMCAA for the 10,000+ KMC, MCA and CKM alumni worldwide.

All alumni, regardless of the graduation year , are encouraged to sign up for this inaugural advisory council. Our meetings will begin soon. Be part of Kapaun Mt. Carmel’s rich legacy by joining the KMCAA Advisory Council today!

To sign up, go to www.kapaun.org under the Alumni/Get Involved.

Alumni UpdatesWe want to stay connected with you! Do you have news to share? We would love to hear from you. www.kapaun.org/Alumni

Alumni Swim MeetOn December 20, 2014, KMC alumni swimmers came back to Wichita Swim Club to participate in a swim meet with current swimmers. Thanks to KMC swim coaches Chris Erickson and Meredith Matthies ‘07 for their work in arranging the meet.

Alumna Receives National AwardGrace Hagan ‘15 was named to the 2014-15 High School Girl’s Scholar All-America Team. She is one of 46 girls recognized nationally. This award is given by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America which is a non-profit organization based in Kansas City, MO, with a mission to educate coaches, encourage excellence and serve the soccer community. The Scholar

All-America recipients will be recognized at the NSCAA Summer Symposium in Orlando, FL in August. Grace will be attending the University of Kansas, where she will play soccer. Congratulations, Grace!

Father Emil Kapaun gave glory to God by followinghis call to the priesthood and thus serving the people

of Kansas and those in the military.

Father Kapaun, I ask your intercession not only for these needswhich I mention now. . .but that I too may follow your example

of service to God and my neighbor.

For the gifts of courage in battle and perseverance of faith,we give you thanks O Lord.

JENNIFER LOPEZ ‘96 HILLFamily: Married to Scott Hill with two sons Eliot, age 6 and Nicholas, age 2.

After High School: Attended University of Notre Dame (English and History major) and then Washburn University School of Law (undergrad Law degree/grad school)

Occupation: Lawyer for 12 years and currently a partner at McDonald, Tinker, Skaer, Quinn & Herrington, P.A.

As a partner in the private practice with a law firm in Wichita, I have the ability to work with real people to find resolutions to all of the problems they face. My focus is in personal injury and employment law. I help people navigate the legal system which can be pretty overwhelming. My job is challenging and requires many different skill sets, but at the end of the day, I am just a person helping their very real client. Knowing that I am working towards solving problems keeps me motivated and excited to come to work every day.

Accomplishments: I’ve been named to Wichita Business Journal’s 40 under 40; Super Lawyers Rising Stars; and 2015 Women Leader in the Law by The American Lawyer.

One of my proudest professional accomplishments was serving as an officer and eventually as President of the Wichita Bar Association, the local attorney group that represents and serves the 1400 attorneys practicing law in Sedgwick County. I just completed my term as President.

Hobbies: I run in marathons, volunteer at The Lord’s Diner, love to travel and am a foodie who loves off the wall places.

My time at KMC: Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School taught me early on the importance of hard work and self-discpline. I loved my time at KMC, as I was part of a community, all of us working towards being our best and pushing each other in every way. I appreciated that my opportunities to study my faith were not one-sided memorization of doctrine but deep, thoughtful discussions about our world, morality, and ethics. I carry the lessons from the classroom and from my friendships with me every day.
