Person by person, city by city and state by state, you’re Spreading the Wave and harnessing support for what many are calling “the world’s most promising cancer treatment.”

What was once confined to a small group of supporters in John Kanzius’ home states of Pennsylvania and Florida, the phenomena of treating cancer without side effects has grown into a national movement to end cancer. Look at the kind of wave that one “drop of an idea” has recently created:

Millions of viewers in Chicago, Dallas, Hartford, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, and Washington, DC saw our one-minute commercial about the Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation and the winning Pepsi Refresh Project idea when it aired during the morning broadcast of The Today Show.

In Atlanta and Boston, Joseph Research and Consulting of Philadelphia conducted focus marketing studies among highly diverse groups

asking what people knew about the Kanzius Noninvasive Radiowave Cancer Treatment and determining the most effective way to reach a broader range of audiences. It came as no surprise that only ONE participant had a slight recollection of the “Kanzius theory” and thought it might be from CBS’s 60 Minutes. Making Waves Across the U.S.A.

Faces of the FightThe rippling effect of “the wave” reaches California – touched by cancer, the CEO of trendy HER energy drink throws a Hollywood fundraiser for KCRF

Delivering ResultsA review of the milestones from two highly successful initiatives: the Pepsi Refresh Project and the Repeat the Wave Campaign

Success on Capitol HillA series of meetings with some of the nation’s most influential policymakers nets awareness – and a significant amount of federal and state funding

will be rolled out as a direct outcome of these market studies.

In the sister communities of Captiva Island and Sanibel (FL) where John Kanzius spent his winters, Dr. Stephen Curley, lead investigator for the project, and Mark Neidig, executive director of KCRF, addressed an audience of more than 300 at the BIG ARTS Center, giving a research and funding update along with Q&A’s.

Ham radio operators felt the wave of excitement at the Hamvention, the world’s largest amateur ham radio convention in Dayton (OH) and at Ham-Com, an amateur radio gathering in Plano (TX). John Kanzius’ former friends from the ham radio community were thrilled to hear about the progress that had been made since his passing.

Our first “Spread the Wave Florida Tour” focused on the communities of Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, The Villages, and West Palm Beach (FL). KCRF supporters were invited by mail, email and social media to attend an hour-long update presentation with Q&A’s. Guests were encouraged to help Spread the Wave by bringing a friend along.

Whenever Neidig travels to a community, he maximizes his time and foundation resources by reaching out to the surrounding area. “I ask the coordinators to introduce me to their circles of friends” Neidig commented. “A friend telling a friend so beautifully opens the door and thus, the wave continues to spread.” This method has proven incredibly effective in Harrisburg (PA), Houston, Jasper (IN), Indianapolis, Kansas City/Overland Park (MO) and St. Louis. Can you feel it? I am overwhelmingly amazed at the power of passion. You give because you have been affected by this dreaded disease; you share because you don’t want others to go through what you have experienced. I recently read Malcolm Gladwell’s work “The Tipping Point.” He explains the “Stickiness Factor” as the quality that compels people to pay close, sustained attention to a product, concept, or idea. Well thanks to you, countless people have only one way to complete the phrase “Spread the __________” and the work has only begun.

One year of new, innovative initiatives resulted in a myriad of accomplishments that elevated the Kanzius message to a national name:

• Hiring a project manager to oversee the grant and new initiatives

• Selecting The CHT Group (Boston) to develop messaging and secure national media attention

• Increasing website traffic and search engine placement through Gott Advertising (San Francisco), Panos Creative (Philadelphia) and Epic WebStudios (Erie, PA).

• Spearheading new avenues to receive donations from and communicate with supporters through Mobile Matters (New York)

• Building awareness with niche audiences and educating/updating Congress on research and funding

• Growing the national base of volunteers through initiatives such as the Final Cure Party, an event that took place on six college campuses

• Acquiring new donors through direct marketing initiatives such as the Repeat the Wave Campaign

During the month of April in 2011, an anonymous donor sponsored a challenge grant by pledging to give

$1 for each new KCRF Facebook fan and $.50 for each dollar donated. Repeating the wave of excitement from last year, the results remain astonishing:

• Raised $72,829.01 in 30 days

• Signed up 1,479 new Twitter followers

• Gained 11,630 new Facebook fans

• Attracted 34,098 new website visitors

• Had 2,350,000 Google Ad views

• Launched the Kanzius Mobile Giving Campaign: Text “WAVE” to 20222

• Provided a live webcast of Repeat the Wave Celebration Rally

Delivering ResultsHere are highlights from two recent and highly successful Kanzius Foundation initiatives:

globe during the Kiwanis Interna-tional Convention. The Northwest Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) blazed the trail by asking their state office to sponsor a booth to help Spread the Wave at the National Education Association (NEA) annual confer-ence held in New Orleans. The result: hundreds of names and addresses and over $3,000 in donations. Later, networking in New York at the NextGen Forum and OMG2011 (a summit for young adult cancer survivors) provided countless introductions to young, passionate leaders devoted to a better way to treat cancer. Most recently, we Spread the Wave to college student “Circle K” leaders in Virginia Beach (VA) and in Phoenix to over 1,300 high-school student “Key Club” leaders and advisers from across the US and Caribbean.

We’re taking our message to every community – big or small – to let you know there is an alternative and there is hope. Neidig has given numerous radio interviews on WTCA-AM and participated in a successful radiothon in his small hometown of Plymouth (IN). A local CBS affiliate in Lewiston (ID) featured a story on cancer survivor Stephanie Florence, a valued supporter of KCRF since watching the first 60 Minutes segment. In big cities like Pittsburgh, the PSEA provided opportunities to address their members and raise awareness. And, in New York we unveiled our Times Square initiative to encourage votes for the Pepsi Refresh Project during Fox & Friends and The Today Show.

Southern California has long been a popular surfing region, and now the waves are growing. Neidig recently met with the John Wayne Cancer Foundation in Newport Beach and made presentations for ongoing funding. He also updated and thanked the Kiwanis group in Chatsworth that has been Spreading the Wave since the inter-national Kiwanis conference last year. In Beverly Hills, a fundraiser sponsored by HER energy drink introduced the message to a younger audience (see story on page 3). And in Manhattan Beach, Neidig met with officials at the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN) to discuss opportunities for collaboration.

Courtesy of Skype, we held web meetings with Seton Hall University marketing students working on a KCRF fundraising project in South Orange (NJ).

The list doesn’t stop here. KCRF received national exposure with our executive director’s interview during an NPR Marketplace segment and through thousands of internet and social media interactions. Neidig also gave an interview to one of the editors of O Magazine for a possible feature story.

We will always acknowledge and commend the Erie community where more than fifty grassroots fundraisers took place last year. From the 3rd Annual Lilly Broadcasting “Community for Kanzius” telethon and numerous charity golf outings to lemonade stands and newspaper collections – thanks for keeping the wave alive!

One drop and the Kanzius wave spreads. More people know about John’s theory, our research and the potentials than ever before. And yet…it is just the beginning. Until the first patient is treated and the very first life is saved, your unwavering commitment is vital. It is a matter of Spreading the Wave!

Help Us Spread The Wave! Here are three easy ways you can help:•Make a donation•Direct your friends to www.Kanzius.org to learn more•Introduce the Kanzius Foundation to your circle of friends; perhaps a celebrity or leader that you know personally

Facesof theFight

When you tell even one person about KCRF, you never know how far you’ll Spread the Wave.

Take the example of HER, a trendy energy drink company headquartered in Hollywood. Bryon Schreckengost, the company’s former director of marketing who also hails from John Kanzius’ hometown of Erie, Pa., made a big difference simply by telling HER CEO Brett Jacobson about KRCF.

“We work with lots of charities, but very few are actively researching a cure,” Bryon says. “Like me, Brett thought what KCRF was doing was groundbreaking and world-changing.”

Beyond that, Brett, who lost two grandparents to cancer and has an aunt battling the disease, had a personal reason to get involved. So he teamed up with filmmaker Brian Herzlinger – a friend with whom he reconnected through KCRF Executive Director Mark Neidig – to throw a fundraiser at Mezze, a West Hollywood restaurant.

“It was like a ‘roast of cancer,’ because all the comics made fun of cancer,” Brett says. The “roast” attracted more than 100 people and inspired HER to plan a bigger event this summer and to donate a portion of its profits to KCRF.

It’s easy to forget that your small actions can make a big difference. Some quick and easy ideas to bring us one step closer to a cure include sharing this newsletter with people who don’t know about us, directing friends to our Facebook page, and organizing your own fundraiser.

Success on Capitol HillKCRF Executive Director Mark Neidig visits state capital Harrisburg (PA) and Washington DC to inform influential policymakers and government officials about the Kanzius Noninvasive Radiowave Cancer Treatment.

During meetings in DC, that at times included Dr. Curley, Neidig held deskside briefings with the offices of Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), former Rep. Phil English (R-Pa.), former Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper (D-Pa.), Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.), Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.), and former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge. These meetings, along with ones held with former Governor Ed Rendell and key state officials in Pennsylvania, have helped the Kanzius project receive over $4 million in government funding.

“Before he passed, John Kanzius was frustrated that there wasn’t more government support,” says Neidig. “This process, which takes time and patience, is well underway now. More than ever, we need your vote to be heard!”
