2009 ANNUAL REpoRT July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2009 3

The fourth quarter of Fiscal Year 2009 found Kansas Wesleyan University officials making plans for a presidential transition.

On April 17, 2009, Dr. Paula Wright, Chair of the Kansas Wesleyan University Board of Trustees, announced that Kansas Wesleyan President Philip P. Kerstetter was leaving the University to accept the presidency of Mount Olive College in North Carolina.

The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees quickly began work on the transition of leadership and the search for a person to fill the position on a permanent basis. On June 12, 2009, the Board of Trustees announced the hiring of Dr. Craig Dean Willis as interim President of the University, beginning July 1, 2009. Willis was hired to serve as President of Kansas Wesleyan until a more permanent replacement could be hired.

Willis, from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, most recently served as Interim President of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti,

Michigan. Prior to that, he was President of Lock Haven University for 22 years. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education from Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio; a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy of Education from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio; and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Higher Education and

Foundations of Education from Ohio State University.Kerstetter was appointed the seventeenth president of Kansas

Wesleyan University on May 2, 2002. His term began July 1, 2002. During his time at Kansas Wesleyan, both enrollment and the University’s endowment hit all-time record levels. Additionally,

the University became more visible in the community, and more Salinans recognized and supported Kansas Wesleyan as the community’s University.

Under Kerstetter’s guidance, the look of the campus also changed. A new Student Activities Center was built, the first new building since the early 1980s. Along with that project, a large portion of the front part of campus was landscaped. Several other buildings were freshened and Sams Hall of Fine Arts was remodeled.

Kerstetter was active in the Salina community as well. He was a member of the University United Methodist Church and served on several local advisory groups. Kerstetter was a member of the Board of the Salina Area United Way and served as the Chair of the 2006 Salina Area United Way Annual Campaign. He began his term on the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in 2007. He also was a member of the Boards of the Associated Colleges of Central Kansas, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the National Association of Schools and Colleges of The United Methodist Church, Ashby House, the Stiefel Theatre, Community Access TV, and the Salina Arts & Humanities Commission.

Kerstetter received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania; a Master of Education degree in College Counseling from the University of Delaware, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Special Education Administration from Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C.

StudentsThe Fall 2008 headcount enrollment was 879, an increase of

1.74 percent over the fall 2007 figure. That figure was aided by a 4.23 percent increase in retention.

*An inadvertent error was made in the 2008 Annual Report. The above numbers for 2006 and 2007 are correct.

The number of student living on campus in Fall 2008 grew to 431, up 8.56 percent from the previous year. Both the numbers of male and female students residing on campus rose in Fall 2008.

in Fiscal Year 2009 was a total of 6,945. In all 454 persons, including 38 staff/faculty members, participated in one or more events. Of those participating, 230 were new participants and 55 were first time freshmen.

In September of 2008, a group of Kansas Wesleyan University students received a $26,233 grant from the City of Salina for the University’s Project HUNT for Green program. The grant allowed the group to purchase an electric recycling truck, a number of vermi-composting bins, and other necessary supplies so that the HUNT for Green team could educate the public about the benefits of living a green lifestyle. The group’s efforts culminated in a Green Fair in April of 2009, during which visitors could learn about recycling, composting, saving and reducing energy use, the benefits of buying in bulk, and how

to properly dispose of household hazardous waste.

The Project HUNT for Green team also conducted a green-based community service day in October, during which volunteers worked at various sites throughout Saline County. Volunteers helped pick up trash, gardened, built composting units, and assisted with perennial grain breeding/crop collecting, among other tasks.

Work with Project HUNT for Green and a similar community service day in the spring -- Project HERO -- earned Kansas Wesleyan University a spot on the 2008 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The recognition was announced in February of 2009. Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.

In mid October, the University’s Kansas National Education Association-Student Program (KNEA-SP) chapter held a day of action on campus to encourage presidential candidates and elected officials across the country to address the high cost of tuition. The effort was a part of the National Education Association’s “Got Tuition?” a national, nonpartisan campaign bringing the issues of college affordability and the long-term effects of student loan debt to the forefront of public policy debates. With the national presidential election a few weeks away, the group also conducted a mock election that was open to both Kansas Wesleyan students and employees.

Kansas Wesleyan Nursing students, under the guidance of Nursing Education faculty, assisted the Salina-Saline County Health Department with a flu shot clinic in November 2008. A number of people from the community, along with KWU employees and students, participated in the clinic, which was held in the Student Activities Center.

KNEA-SP members also held a reading event in January for the children of the Martin Luther King Jr. Child Development Center as a part of a National Education Association community service initiative in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the inauguration of Barak Obama as President of the United States.

A celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was the focus of Kansas Wesleyan’s monthly Chapel Service January 19, 2009, at University United Methodist Church. During the service, Kansas Wesleyan alumnus Jeff Harrison (’98) delivered King’s “I Have a Dream” sermon.

The Lady Coyote Basketball Team finished the 2009 season as the KCAC Regular Season Co-Champions, sharing the title with Sterling College. KWU met Sterling again in the KCAC Post-Season Tournament Championship, where they upset the No. 5 ranked Warriors and earned the team’s first berth in the NAIA Division II National Championships in Sioux City, Iowa. The Lady Coyotes won their first game in a 61-52 decision over Aquinas (Mich.), before dropping a heartbreaking 59-56

decision to Black Hills State (S.D.) in the second round. In April, a group of senior Religion students delved into the

role that spiritual wellbeing plays in a person’s overall health by organizing a spiritual wellbeing presentation that was open to the campus and the Salina community.

The tombstones on the front lawn at Kansas Wesleyan in mid-April were not a part of the University’s landscaping, but rather a part of a student-driven initiative to educate peers about the deadly effects of too much alcohol. During the two-day “Time is Ticking” event, student participants “died” as if they were in an alcohol related accident. The students who volunteered were taken out of class momentarily by a reaper and then returned wearing t-shirts indicating that they were victims. They had their faces painted white. During the time the volunteers were “dead” they were not to talk or interact with their peers or anyone else around them. Unless there was a need for them to interact in class, they were to act as if they were not there. For every student who “died” on the first day, a tombstone was placed on the lawn in front of Pioneer Hall. Photos of the “dead” students also were placed in the Student Activities Center.

On the second day, an open casket with a mirror was placed in the Student Activities Center. A sign on the casket contained the words “Think about it.” Later that evening, a local EMT and family made a presentation about the deadly effects of too much alcohol. The presentation was followed by a candlelight vigil near the tombstones.

As a part of the “Time is Ticking” event, the Office of Student Life, in conjunction with local law enforcement, conducted demonstrations both days in the parking lot between Wilson Hall and Wesley Hall. On the first day, a mock two-vehicle crash was conducted. Mangled vehicles previously in alcohol-related accidents were used. Volunteer students were made up and placed in the vehicles. Once the volunteers were in place, law enforcement and emergency personnel responded to the scene as if it were a real accident. Two of the student volunteers

“died” at the scene, others were taken away in an ambulance, and one was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence. On the second day, law enforcement officials created an obstacle course for student drivers to negotiate while wearing beer goggles, special glasses that simulate what the world looks like to someone who is drunk.

After winning the 2009 KCAC Regular Season and post-Season Tournament Championships, the Coyote Baseball team advanced to the NAIA Opening Round tournament, where the Coyotes advanced to the championship series, before losing the World Series qualifier to Campbellsville (Ky.).

Career ServicesFiscal Year 2009 was an exciting time in the Career Services

Office and the KWU campus when for the first time the I-135/70 Career Opportunities and the ACCK Teacher Interview Day events were both sponsored on the KWU campus. More than 200 students from Kansas Wesleyan and Kansas State University at Salina participated at I-135/70 Career Opportunities event, during which employers from across disciplines and from both in state and out of state came together to provide students with opportunities for internships and full time employment. Teacher Interview Day enjoyed the participation of more than 40 students and 69 school districts as they visited and arranged opportunities satisfying to all.

Career Services also saw the kick-off of Hire-A-Coyote the first week of school to help incoming students find employment for the school year. More than 150 students participated in this event and employers were excited about the candidates they visited with. Several students walked away with job offers or opportunities for second interviews.

An additional event was the annual Nursing Career Fair with 17 businesses and 56 students participating.

Many students also participated in workshops such as: Mock Interviews and Graduate School Application Strategy, as well as classroom presentations on resume/cover letter

FacilitiesKansas Wesleyan celebrated the opening of the Student

Activities Center with a variety of activities during Homecoming Week in October. A donor celebration on October 9, 2008, kicked off Homecoming Weekend. The following evening, Kansas Wesleyan alumni and friends gathered in the Hauptli Student Center portion of the building for the annual Alumni Dinner. On Homecoming Day, hundreds of alumni and friends enjoyed a tailgate meal in the Hauptli Student Center.

The week after Homecoming saw Kansas Wesleyan hosting a Salina Area Chamber of Commerce After Hours event to introduce the new facility to the business community.

The use of the Student Activities Center at Homecoming was reflective of what the building means to the University. The 70,000-square foot Student Activities Center serves as the hub of activity on campus. Located on the corner of Claflin and Fourth, the Student Activities Center includes academic, athletic, recreational, and social opportunities.

At the heart of the building is the Hauptli Student Center, which includes Student Government and Student Activities offices, a large gathering space complete with stage area, a variety of meals or snacks in The Den, and the campus post office. Directly above the Hauptli Student Center is the Brown Mezzanine, which provides a game area, as well as several lounge areas.

The Student Activities Center also includes the Mabee Arena, a more than 1500-seat performance gymnasium, Muir Gymnasium, the Backstrom Conference Room, a fitness center, locker rooms, Department of Athletics offices, and offices and classrooms for the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.

The $12 million building was designed by Salina architect Jeff Gillam of Jones, Gillam, and Renz. Design elements used in the building tie it to the University’s historic Pioneer Hall. Additionally, a patio area just outside the Hauptli Student Center portion of the building contains its own historical

remained strong. Budgeted gifts decreased by less than one percent and the Alumni giving percentage remained at 15.5 percent for the third consecutive year. Overall giving (including capital projects, endowment, and restricted giving) experienced a nine-percent decrease. The University’s endowment, like all others, suffered a decrease in valuation. Because of prudent financial management, however, student’s financial aid packages where funded with the same four percent of fund balance through the use of reserve funds saved from times when market returns were better.

Alumni AssociationFiscal Year 2009 saw the Kansas Wesleyan University Alumni

Association continue its interaction with and service to the University. During this period, the Alumni Association completed payment of its $10,000 pledge toward a room in the Student Activities Center. Additionally, the Alumni Association provided funding for a number of projects, including the following:

significance. Along the windows, visitors to the patio will find approximately 420 bricks engraved with the names of alumni, current and former faculty and staff, student groups and classes, each a part of the University’s history.

In addition to the opening of the Student Activities Center, Fiscal Year 2009 saw the completion of the University’s landscaping project, the majority of which was on the northern portion of the main campus. The landscaping included a pedestrian mall and water feature in front of Pioneer Hall, a gathering space south of Sams Hall of Fine Arts, meandering walkways, and a variety of bushes, trees, and flowers.

Institutional AdvancementDuring Fiscal Year 2009, the Office of Institutional

Advancement continued its concentration on stewardship and donor recognition. A special emphasis was given to estate and gift planning with the launch of the University’s enhanced planned giving website (www.kwu.edu/advancement/index.htm). Within the Institutional Advancement website, visitors could find information about tax savings, estate preparation, ways to give, bequest language, and other estate and gift planning information.

Also within the website was information about the University’s Heritage Society, a group that celebrates the individuals and families who have made a decision to have a lasting impact on future students. To be eligible for membership, these thoughtful donors have either established an endowed scholarship, or have included Kansas Wesleyan in their estate plans. During Fiscal Year 2009, the KWU Foundation administered more than 155 endowed scholarships.

Heritage Society members were recognized during the University’s annual Founders Day Celebration February 27, 2009, at the Salina Country Club. During the luncheon, those assembled heard about two individuals – W. Harold Young and Audrey Westrick – who through their estates, generously donated to the University.
