The highest level of support existed for an immediate increase in the minimum wage, followed by incremental raises until the minimum wage reaches $15 per hour by 2020. We asked voters: Would you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose or strongly oppose the City of Kansas City imposing a minimum wage applicable to all work performed in the City of $8.50 per hour effective August 28, 2015, and raised to $10 per hour effective January 1, 2016, and increased $1.25 per hour each year thereafter until reaching $15 by 2020 and increase annually thereafter according to the cost of living? This proposed measure was supported by 69% of voters, a number comprised of 53% strongly supporting the measure and 16% somewhat supporting the measure. 28% opposed the plan, with 20% strongly opposing and 8% somewhat opposing the plan. Respondents also supported increasing the minimum wage to $9.00 within the year and $1.00 each year until it reached $12.00, but less intensely. 43% strongly supported this plan with 25% somewhat supporting it, bringing support for the bill to 68%. 20% strongly opposed and 9% somewhat opposed the plan. A majority of both Democrats and Republicans supported both the incremental plan to achieve $15 an hour, and the incremental plan to achieve $12 an hour. 52% of Republicans supported the incremental plan to reach a $15 minimum wage by 2020, while 87% of Democrats supported such a proposal. When asked about the incremental plan to reach $12 an hour by 2020, 54% of GOP voters and 80% of Democrats supported such an approach. Additionally, voters aged 4665 strongly supported each measure at a higher rate than other age groups, favoring the $15, $12, and $10 minimum wages 61%, 46%, and 45%, respectively.
