Due to the fact, that the parade was held on a working day, I’d estimate that 60% of the

participants of the parade also joined the show at the Union Station. The majority of the

participants will have to take a day off from work – therefore it can be expected, that they joined

the parade and the show as well.

The other 40% are people working in the surroundings, who just joined the parade. The number

of people, who joined only the show, I’d estimate about 60,000.

I’d estimate the total number of people about 255,000.

The analysis is based on the images provided and the assumptions stated. People watching from

inside of buildings and from rooftops have not been taken into account for this analysis. The error

margin is expected to be around +/- 10%, given the limitations of the available data.

Background information on the author

Magister (rerum socialium oeconomicarumque) Alexandar Kollaritsch has been in the eventsecurity business since 1991. Since 1998 he runs his own event security company, the 4mation

event- & securityconsulting gmbh. During this time he was involved in and responsible for the

security of at least 4.000 events of any sizes including some major events (>50.000 visitors).

Since 2015 he is attending the MSc course ´Crowd Safety and Risk Analysis´ at the Manchester

Metropolitan University (UK).

The course is held by Professor Keith G. Still and is the first MSc in Crowd Safety and Risk

Analysis in the world.

The course focuses on Crowd Science and Risk Analysis for mass gatherings (events, public

transport systems, rallies, etc.), Crowd and Event Modelling, Major Incidents and Accident

Investigation and Real-Time Decision Support Tools.
