Each member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) pledge to observe high standards of honesty,

integrity and responsibility in the conduct of business:

� By promoting in good faith only those products and services which are known to be functionally and economically sound,

and which are known to be consistent with objective standards of health and safety.

� By making all advertising and sales promotion factually accurate, avoiding those practices which tend to mislead

or deceive the customer.

� By writing all contracts and warranties such that they comply with federal, state and local laws.

� By promptly acknowledging and taking appropriate action on all customer complaints.

� By refraining from any act intended to restrain trade or suppress competition.

� By attaining and retaining insurance as required by federal, state and local authorities.

� By attaining and retaining licensing and/or registration as required by federal, state and local authorities.

The goal of the National Association of the Remodeling

Industry (NARI) is to help homeowners find the right

professional partner to do their remodeling. Whether it is

updating a kitchen to make it more efficient, turning an ordinary

bathroom into a haven of rest and relaxation, or adding a room

to meet the needs of a growing family, NARI wants each

homeowner to get the maximum value or enjoyment for the

dollars they invest in their remodeling.

NARI membership means that a professional is a full-time,

dedicated remodeling professional. NARI membership offers

this assurance through an extensive screening process and

requirement of its members to follow a strict code of ethics.

What does NARI Membership mean to homeowners?


The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is

a not-for-profit trade association committed exclusively to

the professional remodeling industry and homeowners. NARI has

more than 6,502 members nationwide and 272 in the Kansas

City area. The members of Kansas City NARI include professional

remodeling contractors, subcontractors, product manufacturers,

distributors, lenders and other allied business professionals.

Kansas City NARI is the voice of the remodeling industry and

is an ally to all area homeowners. Kansas City NARI members

have pledged to uphold a code of ethics and are dedicated to the

professionalism and integrity of the home-improvement industry.� Kansas City NARI is a featured sponsor in both the

2013 Remodeling Show and the Johnson County Home &

Garden Show.

� Kansas City NARI hosts the annual Remodeled Homes Tour,

inviting consumers to view local homes remodeled by NARI

professionals. The 16th Annual Remodeled Homes Tour is slated

for April 27-28.� NARI CARES! Kansas City NARI hosts annual Work Days

where members come together to give back to the community.

In 2012, Kansas City NARI partnered with The Children’s Place,

a 501-C3 organization that is healing the youngest survivors of

abuse, neglect and trauma, working with babies and children,

ages 6 weeks to 8 years. NARI completed three projects in 2012__ new lobby entrance doors, a remodeled first-floor restroom

and a remodeled employee break room/kitchen.

Start your home-improvement project by selecting a

professional, reliable remodeling contractor. By following

these basic guidelines, you will not only make the selection

process easier, but you also will be better prepared to make

an informed decision that best suits your needs.� Employ a contractor with an established business in your area.

Local firms can be checked through past customers. Look for a

local member of the National Association of the Remodeling

Industry (NARI). The NARI logo is the mark of a professional.� Check the remodeling contractor with the government

Consumers Affairs Office and the Better Business Bureau to

ensure there is no adverse file on record.

What Is NARI?

� Ask to see a copy of the contractor’s certificate of insurance.

Most states require a contractor to carry workers’ compensation,

property damage and personal liability insurance.� If you elect to solicit bids from several different contractors, be

sure they are bidding on the same scope and quality of

work. Discuss variables in bids and beware of any bid that is

substantially lower than the others.� Ask for references and follow up on them. Call the references

and ask such specific questions as: “Did the contractor begin

work on time?” “Did the contractor stay in touch throughout

the project?” “Would you use this contractor again without

hesitation?”

Certification is credibility. It is a testimonial of a contractor’s

commitment to the industry and his or her profession. The

NARI certification program establishes professional standards for

the remodeling industry. To obtain the Certified Remodeler (CR),

Certified Remodeler Specialist (CRS), Certified Kitchen & Bath

Remodeler (CKBR) or Certified Remodeler (CRA) designations,

remodeling contractors must have a minimum of five years

continuous service in the remodeling industry and must study for

several months before completing an intensive half-day exam.

The exams focus on both construction and business practices.

The newest certification is the Green Certified Professional (GCP)

designation for those contractors committed to green remodeling,

along with Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) for

contractors committed to universal remodeling. Kansas City

Certified Remodeling Professionals...Competent, Educated, Ethical

NARI is fortunate to have two Master Certified Remodelers

(MCR) awarded only to those members who have held two

certifications for 10 or more years.

These certified designations are marks of dedication to the

industry and a contractor’s continuing quest for knowledge.

Today’s consumers are better educated. They insist that the

person they invite into their home __ who they invite to literally

change their home __ has more than just a few years of

experience. The NARI designations are an assurance that the

consumer is choosing a professional with years of experience,

dedication to ongoing training and a commitment to ethical

conduct. The Certified Remodeler (CR) and Certified Kitchen &

Bath Remodeler (CKBR) designations are two of the most

sought-out certifications in the remodeling industry.

Kansas City NARI announces the winners of the annual

REMY Awards for 2012. The 33 remodeling projects

completed by NARI professionals represent some of the

highest-quality projects in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The NARI REMY Awards is held annually to honor contractors for

their craftsmanship, professionalism and their commitment to

excellence in remodeling.

Entries for the 2012 program were judged on a 100-point

system that included project overview, before and after

photos, budget considerations, overall aesthetic appeal and

communication with the homeowner. Winners had to score at


least 85 points. All Star awards were presented to those entries

that achieved 94 or more points. Each entry included a

homeowner survey that was worth 15 points. Homeowners

judged the remodeling contractor in three areas __ completion

of contract, communication and finished product. Remodeling

contractors from the greater Dallas NARI chapter judged the

entries this year.

Best of Show awards were presented to four of the 33

projects. These four remodeling projects were judged the best in

four categories: Under $75,000, $75,001-$150,000, $150,001-

$250,000 and Over $250,000.

Ahome remodel should be a project that provides benefits

for many years to come. One way to get the most out of

your investment long-term is by incorporating elements of

universal design, according to the National Association of the

Remodeling Industry (NARI). Universal design is an approach to

the design of products and environments that makes them

easy and comfortable for everyone, regardless of age, ability

or situation.

As the boomer generation ages, and lifestyle needs change,

more professional remodelers are helping homeowners modify

their existing homes to accommodate universal design standards.

Even if you're not sure you need some of these features right

now, it's often easier and less costly to plan ahead for future

needs than to remodel later.

Good design takes time, and anyone can think about

how their home can be more accessible, including visiting

grandparents, young children and persons with temporary or

permanent disabilities.

There are many features homeowners can install into their

existing homes to make them more user-friendly. For example,

in the kitchen, make sure there’s plenty of clearance between

A New Approach to Universal Designsusan or rollout drawers, can make pots and pans accessible

to anyone. Bathrooms planned with universal design in mind

have walk-in showers (with no steps), a bench in the shower

and hand-held showerheads. Installing plumbing fixtures closer

to the outside of the fixture also aids accessibility. Removing

lower vanity cabinets creates much-needed knee space for

people in wheelchairs.

Overall, there are seven basic principles to universal design

that homeowners should keep in mind, according to NARI:

• Equitable Use: The design accommodates any type of user.

• Flexibility in Use: The design may be used by people with a

wide range of abilities.

• Simple and Intuitive Use: Design is easy to understand and

“figure out.”

• Perceptible Information: The design itself communicates

efficiently to the user.

• Tolerance for Error: The design is safe and minimizes

consequences of accidents.

• Low Physical Effort: The design can be used without

strenuous exertion.

• Appropriate Size and Space for Approach and Use.


NARI members share the short list of questions they are

usually asked by homeowners and offer a list of questions

that you should ask. Timing and money are the most

common questions a home improvement contractor hears, but

homeowners should be asking about credentials and verifying

business practices. If you are going to have a successful

remodeling project, you need to learn the right questions to ask

and how to ask them.

When a group of NARI remodeling contractors were asked

what questions homeowners asked most frequently, the group

unanimously agreed that their most popular queries were:

• When can you start?

• When will you be finished?

• What time will you knock on my door each morning?

• What time will you quit for the day?

• Are you going to work every day?

• Can you finish before (insert any major holiday or

significant family event)?

• How much will it cost per square foot?

Unfortunately, these are not the type of questions that are

going to tell you much about a particular contractor.

While a reasonable timetable and budget is important, it

shouldn't be the primary focus of an interview or a job.

Homeowners also should focus on trust and quality.

Start by asking questions about a company's business

practices and experience in a similar type of project. Here are

some questions NARI members recommend you ask before

signing a remodeling contract:

• How long have you been in business?

• Who will be assigned as project supervisor for the job?

• Who will be working on the project? Are they employees or

subcontractors or both?

• Does your company carry workers’ compensation and liability

insurance? (Always verify this information by calling the insurance

agency. A copy of an insurance certificate does not let you know

if the policy is still current. Even if the certificate has an expiration

date, you cannot tell if the insurance has been canceled by either

party. If licensing is required in your state, also ask if the contractor

is licensed and call to verify compliance with the law. Not all

states offer or require licensing. Check with your local or state

government agencies.)

• How many projects like mine have you completed in the

past year?

• May I have a list of references from those projects?

• May I have a list of business referrals or suppliers?

• What percentage of your business is repeat or referral business?

• Are you a member of a national trade association?

• Have you or your employees been certified in remodeling or

had any special training or education, such as earning a Certified

Remodeler (CR), Certified Remodeler Specialist (CRS) or Certified

Lead Carpenter (CLC) or Certified Kitchen & Bath Remodeler

(CKBR) designation?

It's also important to realize that sometimes it's not the

answers you get that are significant, but what you don't get.

Asking the right questions is not enough. You need to pay

attention to your instincts and to what information is missing.

Unlike your accountant or stockbroker, your remodeler will

be a part of your daily life and available for some on-the-job

education. He or she will be privy to your personal life, more so

than your doctor or lawyer. Your contractor will know how you

look early in the morning and how well behaved your dog is. It

makes sense that you should take some time to carefully select

this person and make sure that it is someone to whom you can

ask questions.

Remodeling can be a fun experience. You get to create your

dream room or home and learn a little about design and building

along the way. All you need to do is ask the right questions. So

tap into your curiosity and ask away.

When making improvements to your home, planning

ahead and taking one step at a time is key. Home

remodeling, if done properly, can be painless and even

fun. Remodeling is a decision that requires patience and

planning. NARI suggests the following 10-Step Program when

remodeling:

Assess your current situation. Make sure you have the

financial resources, time and patience to undertake a

remodeling project before you start.

Decide how long you intend to live in your present

home. If you plan on selling your home in the next

few years, check the real-estate comparisons for your

neighborhood to see how much you can invest in remodeling

and still recoup those costs when you sell the home.

Define the areas of the home you want to change.

Have some idea of what you want the remodeling

project to include (number of rooms) before calling a contractor.

Make a list of the spaces to be remodeled as well as the

reasons for the changes. You also might want to look through

consumer magazines for ideas. Depending on your need and

the size and complexity of your intended remodeling project,

there are several different options for you to explore to begin

your remodeling.

� Architect __ Major remodeling projects require construction

drawings for the purposes of defining a contract and procurement

of permits. In cases where your professional remodeler does not

provide design services, you may wish to seek the assistance

of a professionally trained architect. It is best to work with an

architect experienced in remodeling who is more sensitive to

the special challenges that remodeling represents.

� General Contractor __ Many home-improvement projects

might not require professional design services and can best be

materials and methods has been gained by years on the job.

Even small jobs need careful planning and attention to details.

� Design/Build Contractor __ Design/build is a concept

developed to benefit the homeowner by providing both quality

design and construction services within the same general

contracting company. A design/build contractor will be able to

see your project through from start to finish, keeping design,

engineering and budget in mind.

Allow plenty of time for the remodel. Keep in mind that

possible delays could occur during the project due to

material shortages, weather and unforeseen problems. Delays

are especially common for special orders and kitchen cabinets.

Take these into account when creating a timetable with your

contractor. An unrealistic time frame will only add to the difficulty

and stress.

Hire a reputable, professional contractor. Horror stories

abound from homeowners who hired disreputable

contractors, so choose one who is insured, meets any local

or state licensing requirements, and is a member of a

professional trade association such as NARI.

A building permit generally is required whenever structural

work is involved or when changing the basic living area of

a home. Do not obtain your own building permit. In most

jurisdictions, the person obtaining the permit is considered

to be the contractor and is, therefore, liable if the work does

not comply with local building codes. The complex elements of

local building codes and permits are familiar details to a

professional remodeling contractor.

Create a realistic budget. Decide how much money

you can spend on home improvements before starting

a project.

Get a comprehensive proposal from your contractor.

This allows you to know upfront how much money the

project will cost. The proposal also should include the types

of products that will be used.

Get a signed contract before any work begins. The

contract should detail the scope of the project, start

and approximate completion dates, a payment schedule,

product types, and responsibilities of the contractor and any

subcontractors. The contract also should include provisions for

change-order procedures, warranties and alternative dispute

resolution clauses.

� Specify all materials. Your contractor should detail a list of all

materials for the project in your contract. This includes size,

color, model, brand name and product.

� Study all required plans carefully. Insist that you approve

them and that they are identified in your written contract before

work begins.

� Federal law requires that a contractor give you written notice

of your right to, without penalty, cancel a contract within

three business days of signing it, provided it was solicited at

some place other than the contractor's place of business or

appropriate premises __ your home, for instance.

� Understand the financial terms. Make sure that the terms are

spelled out in the contract. The total price, payment schedule

and cancellation penalty should be clear.

� A warranty covering materials and workmanship for a minimum

of one year should be written into the contract. The warranty

must be identified as either “full” or “limited.” If it is a “full

warranty,” all faulty products must be repaired or replaced

or your money returned. A “limited warranty” indicates all

replacements and refunds of damaged products are limited in

some regard. The name and address of the party who will

honor the warranty (contractor, distributor or manufacturer)

must be identified. Make sure the time period for which the

warranty is offered is clearly specified.

� A binding arbitration clause is also a good inclusion in the

event a disagreement occurs. Arbitration can enable you to

resolve disputes more quickly and effectively without costly

litigation.

� Thoroughly review the entire contract and be certain you

fully understand it before signing. Consider the scope of the

project and make sure all items you've requested are included.

Never sign an incomplete contract and always be sure to keep

a copy of the final document for your records.

� Be sure to put all changes in writing if the scope or complexity

of your remodeling project is modified while work is being

done. The amendment should be agreed upon and signed by

both parties.

� Keep a job file including the contract, plans, specifications,

invoices, change orders and all correspondence with the

contractor.

� Request a contractor’s Affidavit of Final Release be provided

to you at the time you make final payment. This is your

assurance that you will not be liable for any third-party claims

for nonpayment of materials or subcontractors.

Tie payments to work stages. Avoid contractors who

ask for the total cost or a large sum of money up front.

Contractors will usually split payments into percentages of the

total cost of the project. These payments are typically tied to

significant stages of the project, and payments are rendered as

parts of the job are completed. Kitchen remodels, however,

often require a large amount of money at the beginning to cover

the costs of ordering cabinets and appliances.

Keep your perspective. Remodeling is disruptive to your

normal household environment. It is important to take a

deep breath, keep your focus and work toward the end result.

If problems occur, talk to your contractor about your concerns.

Remember, remodeling is fun, and before you know it, you’ll

have the dream home you’ve always wanted.
