The weather in Kanazawa is changeable. Since the city gets a relatively large amount of rain, there is a proverb that translates as "Even if you forget your packed lunch, don't forget your umbrella." We recommended that you always be prepared with rain gear such as your umbrella when going out sightseeing.
Welcome to Kanazawa! The items that we are featuring here are just one small part of
Kanazawa. The city's identity is made up of many characteristics that
cannot be found in other Japanese cities. Be sure to experience for
yourself all of the various "Kanazawas" that are scattered about the city
and are integral parts of it.
Experience Kanazawa! In June of 2009, Kanazawa was
appointed into the "Crafts and Folk
Art" category for UNESCO's
"Creative Cities Network".
City of Crafts
In close proximity to both the sea and the mountains, Kanazawa is blessed with geographical conditions that are conducive to an abundance of good food. Moreover, the city's gastronomic culture has been influenced by the delicate and exquisite culture of the feudal period. During all four seasons, many tourists from all over Japan gather here to experience the exquisite flavors of Kanazawa's food.
Would you like to experience the
techniques of Kanazawa's delicate
and elegant traditional crafts?
There are many crafts to
experience from pasting gold leaf,
to the stencil dying of Kaga Yuzen,
to even making your own Wagashi
and much more.

The beautiful lit-up spots in Kanazawa
are perfect for an evening stroll.
You can take the "Light-up" Bus to
each of these spots.
Here you can find out about 21st-century artistic
activities from all over the world. The museum
building is characterized by its striking circular
glass wall.
With its new greenery in the spring, crimson leaves in the fall, and snowy winter scenery, this hot spring has been visited by many of Japan's well-known people. It has a particularly strong connection with the painter Takehisa Yumeji, who is famous for his paintings of beautiful women. Al-so, there is an "ice room" that has been used every year since ancient times to store natural snow un-til the summer, as well as related events.

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa / Kenrokuen Garden and Vicinity
One can summarize the attraction of present-day Kanazawa as "coexistence of mod-
ernity and tradition". For example, by simply venturing a little distance away from
the downtown area that bustles with young people, you can come across a street-
scape dating back several centuries. This is the area that symbolizes the attraction
of present-day Kanazawa. The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kana-
zawa exhibits a wide range of modern art by artists from all over the world; you
can spend a long time there without tiring of the exhibits. Kanazawa Castle Park is
a symbol of Kanazawa's traditional culture, and Kenrokuen Garden was created as
the castle garden by successive generations of lords, beginning more that 300 years
ago. As one of the three most famous gardens of Japan, it attracts many tourists.
This area, in which newness and traditional culture coexist, is truly representative
of modern-day Kanazawa.

The recently opened 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is the most fascinating of all of the art museums that I have visited. Its collection includes two works from my home country of Belgium, and the museum's modern feel, which contrasts with the traditional character of Kanazawa, is alluring. Kenrokuen Garden is a place where you can go to relax any time. Because Japan has distinct seasons, unlike Belgium, you can enjoy different scenery while walking around at different times of the year.

Korinbo / Kata-machi / Naga-machi and Vicinity
The area that comprises Ishikawa Prefecture, where Kanazawa is located, Toyama
Prefecture to the east, and Fukui Prefecture to the west is called Hokuriku.
Korinbo/Katamachi is the largest commercial area in Hokuriku. With its
concentration of various kinds of people and shops, it is the most important center
for both people and products in this area. If you are walking around looking for a
place to have lunch or dinner, or to have tea, this is probably the area where you can
enjoy yourself the most. People looking for typical Kanazawa dishes, or those who
miss the tastes of their home country can probably find the type of restaurant they
are looking for here. Of course, this area is also recommended for shopping, and for
people who want to spend an evening in Kanazawa enjoying some good drinks.
If you go a little beyond the commercial district, you can walk through Nagamachi,
an area that brings to mind the streetscape of samurai days. In this area there are
also samurai residences and museums that evoke the lifestyle of the feudal period, so
if you are interested in samurais and their culture, you should definitely go and have
a look.

I recommend Japanese-style pubs.
Korinbo and Kata-machi, both very lively and
fun areas, are my favorite places in Kanazawa.
As the stores along the main streets are in
covered arcades, you can enjoy window
shopping without having to worry about rain
or snow. For eating out in the evening, I
recommend a Japanese-style pub. Eating and
drinking in a relaxed atmosphere is conducive
to good conversation.

The glass dome of Kanazawa Station has the nickname of "Motenashi Dome".
Motenashi means "welcoming" or "entertainment"; it is a word that indicates
good treatment of guests. The dome expresses the hospitality of the citizens of
Kanazawa, who kindly greet and send off people who come to visit the rainy city,
in the hope that they will not get wet when starting their journey.
Omi-cho Market, said to be the "kitchen of the citizens of Kanazawa", is located
in Musashigatsuji. About 280 years old, it is crammed with rows of seafood and
vegetable shops. Looking around at all of the produce, you will get a sense of the
market's unique vitality.
Owari-cho, which was once inhabited by merchants and craftsmen, has many old
shops that are still in business. You can enjoy the taste of such treats as old-
fashioned confections and tsukudani (various foods boiled down in soy sauce). The
atmospheric street that goes from Owari-cho to the Kazue-machi Chaya District
by the Asanogawa River is the perfect place for a stroll.

The glass dome at Kanazawa Station looks just like a shrine.
The shape of the glass dome at Kanazawa
Station is interesting, because it brings to
mind a Japanese shrine. And the
"Hyakubangai" shopping area inside the
station is the perfect place for buying
souvenirs. When I went back to Belgium I
bought hand mirrors decorated with gold
leaf and Kaga dolls. On my visit to Ishikawa
Confectionery Culture Center in Owaricho,

Higashi Chaya District / Utatsuyama and Vicinity
Higashi means "east", utatsu means "east-southeast"; the names of the Higashi
Chaya District and Mt. Utatsu (Utatsu-yama) derive from the fact that they are
located in an easterly and east-southeasterly direction, respectively, as seen from
Kanazawa Castle.
The Higashi Chaya District is one of three chaya districts in Kanazawa. Its
streetscape, which has maintained a strong feudal-period atmosphere, is still
throbbing with life. For example, in the evening, under the lights of the houses,
you might be lucky enough to meet a group of geisha girls. These are not meant as
an attraction for tourists; they are definitely one of the sights of modern Kanazawa
that have remained throughout the city's long history. The Higashi Geisha District
is an area where you can see and experience for yourself the traditional culture of
Kanazawa.
Mt. Utatsu is a mountain that Kanazawa citizens are familiar with as a place to
relax that is close to the downtown area. You can go there in the spring to enjoy its
cherry blossoms, and in the fall to enjoy its crimson foliage.

Higashiyama gives you a sense of the Kanazawa of old.
You can experience old Kanazawa in
Higashiyama. I especially like Shima (Geisha
House). The kitchen and other rooms give
you a good idea of what life was like in the
Kanazawa of days gone by. At 'Shamisen no
Fukushima', I was also excited about having a
try at playing the shamisen, one of the
traditional instruments of Japan. At dusk, this
area's lit-up cityscape is very beautiful.

No-machi / Tera-machi and Vicinity Tera means "temple". As the name indicates, there are about 70 temples in Teramachi.
About 400 years ago, temples that were dotted around the city were moved to Teramachi
and the base of Mt. Utatsu. Myoryuji Temple, known by its nickname of Ninja Temple, will
probably surprise you with its various contraptions. The sound of bells at dusk also makes a
deep impression on visitors.

Don't forget to make a reservation before going to Myoryuji Temple.
I recommend a visit to Myoryuji Temple, also known as Ninja Temple, which is located in this area. It gives you a chance to see old architecture close up, and the various contraptions in the building will give you one surprise after another. However, there are a couple of points to keep in mind when you visit the temple. First of all, be sure to make a reservation. Also, you should wait until you have been around the building before looking at the English pamphlet. Looking at the pamphlet first would diminish the fun.

Kodatsuno / Nodayama and Vicinity Kodatsuno is southeast of Kenrokuen Garden. There are many temples here too, as well as residential neighborhoods, schools and hospitals; it is a good place for getting a close-up look at the Kanazawa way of life.Nodayama is an immense cemetery where many figures of historical importance to Kanazawa, such as members of the Maeda family, have been laid to rest. It is said that there are more than 50 thousand gravestones in the cemetery, and many people go there to pay their respects.

In Kodatsuno you can get to know the everyday life of the citizens of Kanazawa.
The Kodatsuno area is probably the best place
to find out about the daily lives of the people
of Kanazawa. Because there are a lot of schools
in the area, there are many students walking
around, and at the bottom of the hill, there is a
large shopping center frequented by local
residents. If you rent a bicycle, this area can be
reached quickly from downtown, so why not
make a little side-trip?
金沢指南 Kanazawa lessons 6
A karakuri (mechanical) marionette play featuring Tama-hime, the princess
who came to Kaga at the tender age of three to marry into the Maeda family
and died at the age of 24, is performed at Tentokuin Temple in Kodatsuno.
[Get a sense of history]
1Tentokuin Temple 天徳院 This is the family temple of Tama-hime, the princess who came to Kaga in 1601 to marry into the Maeda family. Even now, a wind-up-doll play about the 24-year-long life of Kanazawa's beloved Tama-hime is performed at the temple every day. x9:00 am - 4:30 pm (Mar. - Nov.), 9:00 am - 4:00 pm (Dec. - Feb.) cBuddhist sermon days, Dec. 29 - Jan. 3 vHigh school students and older ¥500, Junior high school students ¥300, Elementary school students ¥200 (tea
ceremony ¥500) b076-231-4484
2Daijoji Temple 大乗寺
This temple, used for training monks, was founded about 700 years ago and moved to its present location about 300 years ago. Here you can experience Zen meditation - the seeking of enlightenment through detachment and silence, by sitting quietly and concentrating. The building has been designated as a cultural asset of national importance. [Admire the view]
3View from Nodayama 野田山からの景観 From Nodayama, a hill located in the southwestern part of the urban area of Kanazawa, you can see the whole urban area. It is popular as a spot from which to see the city at night; if you have a car, the view is well worth the drive.

L The Best of Kanazawa
ryoteiGet your fill of the elegance of Japanese culture at a (料亭)
Have you ever been to a ryotei, or Japanese-style restaurant?
In addition to authentic Japanese cuisine,
it offers an experience of various elements of Japanese culture.
Here in Kanazawa, there are many ryotei with a history
of several hundred years.
A visit to one of them would be sure to delight you.
Kanazawa - a city of ryotei
Sushi
The architecture of a ryotei
A delicacy presented on a fine plate
Geishas
L Architecture
Enjoy superb sushi Because fresh seafood is readily available
in Kanazawa, the sushi is outstanding.
Be sure to visit the sushi restaurants
dotted around the city.
L Performing arts
Enjoy handicrafts and geisha performancesThe food is presented on Kanazawa Kutani ware, the traditional ceramic ware of Ishikawa Prefecture, and Kanazawa lacquerware; all of the dishes are of superb quality. The interior decoration of a ryotei includes folding screens and scroll pictures. Guests can invite geishas to perform. Please have your fill of Kanazawa's many forms of art in a ryotei.
A ryotei is a restaurant that serves kaiseki ryori -
a set of dishes served on an individual tray.
There are many such restaurants in Kanazawa.
All you need to do to experience the city's
traditional culture is make a reservation. The
attractions of a ryotei can be divided into
"cuisine", "architecture" and "performing
arts".
L Cuisine
Enjoy the essence of Kaga cuisine The dishes served in Kanazawa's ryotei mainly fall into the category of Kaga cuisine. The flavors are exquisite, as indicated by the fact that Kaga cuisine attracts chefs from Kyoto, a city that also has many ryotei, and from all over Japan for training.
Admire a Japanese house and a Japanese garden at the same time.Take your time to look around the building. Kanazawa's ryotei are all of an authentic traditional Japanese-style architecture, with a Japanese garden that takes on a new aspect in each of the four seasons.
