2014 Ski Trip 2014 heralds the 15th annual instalment of the Kanahooka High School Ski Trip. This year we have had over 50 students, (the majority from Year 9) commit to participating. We are expecting 2014 to be as successful as the previous 14 years with all students having a great time. We depart the school on the afternoon of Sunday 17 August and return around 10pm on Wednesday 20 August. The accommodation is at the sleepy little village of Berridale and we ski/snowboard at Smiggins Hole. Skiing/snowboarding is a large part of the trip, however students also learn about; The Man from Snowy River Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme Deep Vein Thrombosis The river that runs uphill Snow Silos Dead (and live) wombats Left and right snow skis Why you do NOT eat yellow snow! If students are very lucky they may also hear Mr Kipp sing a few tunes! I look forward to reporting to you about the Ski Trip later in the year.

Kanahooka High School PDHPE Uniform Policy At Kanahooka High School it is PDHPE Policy that students change out of their school uniform before participating in practical lessons. This policy has been developed as students are unable to participate satisfactorily in physical activity if they are not wearing appropriate clothing. It also addresses hygiene factors as students should not be wearing clothing at school that is sweaty and dirty as a result of participation in practical lessons. We strongly suggest all students purchase the Kanahooka High School sports uniform as we would like to see as many students as possible wearing it for both Sport and PDHPE. However we do understand there will be times when your child’s PDHPE/Sport uniform is not available. When this happens we request students bring other coloured clothing that is suitable for participation in physical activity.

KANAHOOKA HIGH SCHOOL PDHPE/SPORT UNIFORM

Kanahooka High School Sport Shirt

Kanahooka High School Sport Shorts OR Black Shorts OR Black Bike/Exercise Pants

Kanahooka High School PDHPE/Sport shirts and shorts are available from the canteen.

Kanahooka High School PDHPE/Sport shirts cost $30 and shorts $18.

Hat and sunscreen are highly recommended.

The following is considered as unsatisfactory uniform - any item of clothing considered as school

uniform; stockings; restrictive clothes; jeans; singlets; any T-shirt that has offensive material on it. The teacher has the discretion to exclude students from lessons because their clothes are not appropriate.

Students will not be allowed to participate in the lesson if they only change one item of clothing. They

must change both their pants and shirt. Black track pants can be worn for practical PE and sports lessons. Students must then change in to

dress pants/skirt after the lesson. In cold weather students may wear their jumper over their PDHPE/Sport shirt.

Language Centre News All parents and students who are interested in, or have already expressed an interest in hosting a Japanese exchange student in July this year, are encouraged to attend an information session being held in the school library on Monday 7 April at 6.30pm. The evening will be an opportunity for you to ask questions of the Exchange Co-ordinator and be introduced to an outline of what is to be expected. Any enquiries, please contact Ms Hoyn.

Students must change at the beginning and end of each practical lesson, except Period 5, when

students will be allowed to travel home in their sports clothing. On sports days students now have the option of wearing Kanahooka High School sports uniform. If

students wear correct Kanahooka High School sports uniform to school on a sports day and they have a practical lesson they will not be required to change their clothing.

NON PARTICIPATION DUE TO ILLNESS OR INJURY If students are sick or injured and unable to participate in practical lessons we ask they bring a signed note from home detailing their condition. Please write the note yourself, do not allow your child to write the note. Notes written by students can sometimes cause difficulties for both student and teacher as there can be doubt raised as to the authenticity of the note. Students with short term notes will be asked to complete alternate written work or assist the teacher. Students with long term medical conditions are asked to supply a Medical Certificate outlining exactly how long they will be out of action. In these cases students may be given an assessable task to make up for any lengthy break from the practical component of PDHPE. Depending on the nature of the activity some medical conditions may not prevent participation in physical activity. We always encourage students to work within their own limitation. If they are not feeling well or are carrying a minor injury they may still be able to participate. In this case we ask that the student makes the teacher aware of the situation at the start of the lesson. If participation makes the condition worse the teacher will allow them to sit out of the lesson. NON PARTICIPATION AS A RESULT OF NOT BRINGING APPROPRIATE CLOTHING Students who fail to bring an appropriate change of clothing for practical lessons will be given a writing task to complete during the lesson. The second time they forget in a term they will also be issued with a lunchtime detention by their teacher. Students who fail to bring a change of clothing three times in a term will receive an after school detention. Students who fail to bring a change of clothing four times in a term will be referred to the Deputy Principal for persistent failure to follow the teacher’s instructions. Finally, I would like to stress to all parent and carers that if the Kanahooka High School sports uniform is not available, students are able to bring any coloured clothing that is appropriate for participation in practical lessons. If you have any questions please contact the school and talk to your child’s PDHPE teacher.

Mr P Kipp Head Teacher PDHPE

Zone Touch Football Gala Day

On Thursday 20 March, Mr Jardine and Miss Dean took a boys and a girls team to Albion Park to participate in the Zone Touch Football Gala day from which students are selected to trial for the South Coast team. Although there was the constant lure of McDonalds being just across the road, Kanahooka's boys team managed to keep the majority of their focus on the games at hand, winning one game against Oak Flats High School and drawing another. Miss Dean's girls team played with spirit and fight throughout the day and came away with some good results considering they had never played as a team before and only had a couple of training runs. Both teams were excellently behaved throughout the entire carnival, with an opposing school's referee commending our teams on the way they conducted themselves on the field as well as their sportsmanship and ability. Mr B Jardine PDHPE

PASS and SLR Jamberoo Recreation Park Reward Fifty four students from Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 attended Jamberoo Recreation Park on

Wednesday 2 April. This excursion was a reward for all their hard work in the Physical Activity and Sports Studies and Sports Lifestyle and Recreation courses. All students took on the

infamous Funnel Web, and many challenged the teachers on the Speed Racer Slides. A number of members of the public notified the staff at Jamberoo Recreation Park that our Kanahooka High School students were well mannered and exceptional the whole day! Thank you to all the lovely

students who came and made the day fun for everyone!
