    Student of Distinction

This year’s recipient of the Good Spirit School Division’s Student of Distinction award was Dustin Gamble. Here are a few words to describe Dustin.

This student exemplifies the values of the Good Spirit School Division. He takes on the role of being nurturing, respectful and responsible. He demonstrates that we are a learning community and that all diversity belongs in our school.

This young man’s caring and respectful attitude goes beyond the school to his family. He has a sister in Grade 1 that when she sees him she will shout “DJ”. He is quick to respond to her with love and affection. He is very proud of his culture and his family.

    Congratulations Dustin!

  • Listening Skills

Being a good listener is an important life-skill which supports life-long learning. Here are some tips to

be mindful of when modeling and teaching listening skills with your child

Model good listening – we can all work on being better listeners!

Avoid “listening stoppers.” “You,” “If” and “Why” said at the beginning of a direction can frequently cause a child to go on automatic tune-out.

    Get attention first, then talk.

Talk eye to eye. You’re more likely to have your child’s full attention when you give your request eyeball to eyeball.

Lower your voice and speak slower.

Be clear. Make sure you tell your child exactly what you want him to do.

Be short and sweet. Limit your request to fewer words.

Tell, don’t ask. Be sure you phrase your request as a comment and not a question. Try saying “You can…” instead of “Can you…”.

Get active. If time is of the essence or your child needs you to “jump start” him into action, don’t say anything. Just gently grab his hand and take him to where you want him to go.

Get a hearing check. No kidding! If you notice your child has repeated listening problems, investi-gate a possible hearing problem-talk to your doctor or Speech-Language Pathologist.

    Principal’s for the Afternoon

Melody and Keeleigh were the lucky winners for our attendance incentive! Here is what they did as principals in their own words.

We went to go around to observe the teachers. Then we went to the staff room. In the staff room we had fake coffee. We had an extra long recess. We set up chairs in the gym. We got the teachers to sign forms. We did some more observations. We finished the day with a meeting.

    Principals,

    Miss Melody and Miss Keeleigh

    Book Fair

Thank you to everyone who visited the Scholastic Book Fair! Stayed tuned next month for a list of prize winners.

    Student-Led Conferences

Thank you to all our families who participated

in conferences held on Nov.25th and 26th. We

    appreciate your support and feedback.

3A is rocking and rolling with all kinds of fun stuff! We are coming to a close with our dirty Science Unit on Soil but have learned a lot about types, composition, and layers. We had a great time playing with all the soils and getting covered in dirt all the time. In Social Studies, we are taking a trip around the world. So far, we have learned about some of the continents we will be travelling too, and met our host Chester the Travelling Jester, but we will soon learn even more! In math, we came to a quick close on our Patterning Unit and have quickly jumped right into numbers, some that go all the way up to nine hundred and ninety-nine! We are really becoming great counters and builders. But more importantly than all of that, we are becoming a beautiful community and learning a little bit more about each other every day. No one goes through a day without a smile in this room and we LOVE IT!
