Immersion RestaurantCHaraCterImmersion Restaurant is a wild game restaurant located on a hilltop in Morrison, Colorado. It faces the scenic Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater. It is important to the client that the character of the design reflect the character of the restaurant. The character of Immersion is about all things Colorado, especially the scenic views. The menu consists of high quality local produce to accompany the seasonal wild game, poultry and fish. The restaurant also serves local craft beer, liquors, and wine. The customers are upper middle class individuals who frequently dine out and enjoy upscale cuisine.

Goals• Create a floorplan that maximizes the views of Red Rocks• Use as many materials from local manufacturers as possible• Provide a layout that can be reconfigured for larger parties• Provide a space that reflects the menu style• Create a space that is a destination for special occasions• Create custom bar and booth

ConCeptThe concept of the Colorado Frontier uses materials found in the landscape. The owner wanted a wild game restaurant with a contemporary lodge ambience. Even though the menu is rustic, the owner wanted the restaurant to have a romantic feel as well as amazing Red Rocks views. The client wanted to see Colorado materials used in the finishes. A mix of red sandstone and blue stained pine were used throughout the design.

Dining RoomThe design of the building allows for views of Red Rocks from any seat in the dining room. The fireplace has red sandstone veneer applied at different angles and recessing back at an angle to follow the roof line. The fireplace helps to divide the large scale room into appropriately porportioned spaces that are comfortable for the users while allowing access to the mountain views. Beetle kill pine is applied to the ceiling. Class A commercial carpeting is used throughout the space to help reduce noise.

The custom booth is upholstered in red leather with a hair on hide chevron detail. The booth divider has a textured rose glass insert illuminated by LED light strips in the frame. The design features lighting in the partition to provide task lighting as well as being a decorative element.

Inspiration came from the instinctual attraction of peacock spiders and their unique mating ritual. These spiders perform a dance to attract their mates. The males flip their backs up showing females their vibrant colors and patterns. These elements sparked the concept of design. The bodies of the spiders helped express varying forms within the space while bold patterns and colors provide an exciting color story. The spiders’ role as ecological indicators guide us toward sustainable design options. The symmetrical aspects act as a guide for laying out the space.

CirCulation From looking at the plan view of Studio 8 Cosemetics, one can see how curves were used to illustrate the concept of the peacock spider. The use of the Resolve system from Herman Miller allowed for the illusion of the spider’s mating dance to occur within the open work space. The curves create soft gestures in the circulation path that guide occupants from one space to another. Open work spaces use symmetry to create balance within the design. Stratgecially placed linear elements, such as workstations help create harmony among the rectilinear shaped offices with the curved seating and work stations.

Reflected Ceiling Plan

In the reflected ceiling plan custom clouds were used to dampen sound in the workspaces. These clouds provide bright vibrant colors to the space, such as those found on the spiders themselves. The variety of shapes also mimic the patterns on the backs of the spiders.

Recessed cans were mounted into the clouds for additional layer of lighting. Linear LED lights were used throughout the open work space and 2x2 LED fixtures were used in the private offices. LED fixtures were selected because they are energy efficient, and low maintence. They also add to the comfort of the workspace by operating without added heat or noise.

Creative Arts Therapy CenterThe Creative Arts Center was created by a group of art and music therapists focused on serving children with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disabilities. The center provides more services than the children are currently offered doing therapy in their homes. The center is be community focused, providing a space for peers and families to grow together.

Goals and objeCtives

Goal: The center will have an interior environment that is free of sensory distractions. Objective: Materials and finishes will be carefully selected to be the best choice for the sensory needs of the users.

Goal: The center will provide various activities to accommodate the differing users. Objective: The space planning of the building will provide different room styles and sizes to best suit the users.

Goal: The operating cost should not drastically effect the budget of the users over time. Objective: Energy efficient measures will be used as well as high quality construction.

Goal: The center will run efficiently to maximize the number of clients that can be seen on a daily basis. Objective: The design will have fixed furniture and storage options to provide smooth transitions for children greatly upset by change.

The center is fully accessible. It provide a safe environment for autistic children that may be prone to running or vsiolent outburst. There must be careful consideration in selecting materials to choose items that best fit the sensory needs of autistic children. Fixed furniture is used wherever possible, especially in rooms moderate to severe autistic children are using. The rooms are adequately insulated with solid doors to provide sound proofing. Wherever available, natural light is used. The multipurpose room is located near the entrance due to its use in off hours.

Floor Plan

The circulation of the building was inspired by the rotation of clock hands moving in a clockwise or counterclockwise movement. A radial path was created as the main circulation throughout the center. Autistic child sometimes run so minimazing exit routes was a design issue. This circulation is easy to navigate. It is also a helpful way to prevent a child from getting lost if he or she tries to run.

Wayfinding was an important issue for the design of the center. The colored cog pattern in both the floor and ceiling creating a rhythm for children to follow to their therapy rooms. The rooms are grouped in twos by a specific color to help with wayfinding. The colors correspond to the colors on the map in the reception space.

seCtion One music room is set up showing a hanging swing that is often used as a reward at the end of the session. The hooks for these swings are placed in the large music rooms. The swings be easily hung and taken down as needed. The walls extend to the roof on order to help with soundproofing.

Group art sessions are great for working on social skills. The users of this area are higher functioning but may be in a wheelchair. It provides a second waiting area and is in close proximity to one set of restrooms. Because the group therapy sessions are scheduled differently, a second access door was added.

Reception

The reception area was designed to be a playful space to explore. A fixed custom bench for children to climb wraps around the west and north walls. It also provides storage for toys. Thermosensitive panels encourage children to engage with the space. The windows are layered with colored films and textured patterned films for an added sensory feature. The south wall features a map of the center that enables children to locate their therapy rooms prior to their sessions.

funCtion

This room is used during the day for group music or dance/movement therapy. It was designed to be a community space where workshops, concerts and art shows could be held. It is available to local art and music therapists as well as for community organizations to rent at a low cost in the evenings and on weekends. The multipurpose room has its own entrance off of the shared tenant lobby access and private restrooms. For larger functions, there are additional restrooms located outside the second egress door.

flexibility and order

There is a balance of order and flexibility within the multipurpose room. To promote order, the east and west walls flank the space with large storage closets providing away spaces for stacking chairs, movable stage components, easels and miscellaneous supplies. Movable elements such as chairs and easels can be staged within the free flowing space in a variety of configurations.

Autistic children need order as well as their own sense of space. The need for order is addressed by providing a designated area that has a custom shelving unit to store coats, shoes and other personal items. The ottomans, while interlocking, can be easily moved if needed.

The design concept is Sinnissippi, a local park. The concept uses outdoor elements to create a serene place to explore and enjoy. The hard materials of metal and stone found in the park’s sculptures will be used in a softer way such as accents on furniture and fireplaces. The colors reflect the many flowers found in the garden and conservatory. Natural light and windows help connect with the outside world. The center is in a residential area with shopping nearby, as well as the actual Sinnissippi Park with the garden, music, trolley, golf, and other activities. The layout provides a path to guide residents to several points of interest that residents can stop and explore. The use of color and pictorial images help with way-finding in addition to written signage.

Greenlee ResidenceRobert and Amanda Greenlee live in a single family home in Rockton, Illinois. They have two children, an 8 year old boy named Kaden and a 7 month old girl named Elli. Their home currently does not have enough storage space, the children’s rooms are too small, they are lacking a guest room, and they do not have enough space for entertaining. They are looking to remodel a larger home in their neighborhood to meet their needs. The couple want the master suite to be seperated from the children’s rooms.

Embracing Spaciousness is about having an open environment while maintaining a sense of warmth. It incorporates the elements of the family and their interests into a space that is functional for intimate family activities or large social gatherings by using overlapping spaces, multifunction furniture and a touch of personalization.

The home has an open floor plan with clusters of furniture for intimate gatherings. There is ample circulation in public spaces when company visits. The home has a contemporary feel and uses classic finishes that will age well with the home. Furniture can be easily manipulated to form different configurations for parties. The furniture and material selections are soft and comfortable but still durable to increase longevity. Dark stained hard wood floors are used in public spaces while plush carpeting will be used in the bedrooms. A warm color palette is used throughout the house. The ceilings are high in the main living area to create the feeling of spaciousness. The hobbies of each family member have been incorporated into the design by using colors and textures that complement existing artwork and accessories.

The recreation room located in the basement also serves as a family room. It is adjacent to the children’s play area so that the children will still be in visual proximity to any activities in the rec room. The rec room has a contemporary pub feel with a pool table and custom bar. The bar has seating for entertaining. Natural materials are used in the room such as wood and stone. A plush sofa and set of chairs are placed around the flat screen TV mounted into a custom entertainment center. Sports memorabilia and artwork have added character to this inviting space.
