BIOGRAPHY

Originally from Lakefield, Ontario, Canadian indie singer-songwriter Kaleigh Watts currently resides in Ottawa, Ontario and is in her last term to achieving a Bachelor of Music in the Singer-Songwriter program from Carleton University.

Apparent in her lyrics and instrumentation, Watts seeks inspiration from the places she calls home. Her debut album “Smoke Lake” was recorded without electricity in her family cabin located on Smoke Lake, Algonquin Park (Ontario, Canada). Many of the tracks on the album were inspired by the familiar surroundings of Algonquin Park and include field recordings and organic textures of Algonquin’s wildlife and natural atmosphere. Other inspirations among the tracks of “Smoke Lake” and Watts’ original tunes include the façade of the small-town lifestyle in her hometown of Lakefield, and the juxtaposing transition from her rural roots to the urban setting of Ottawa.

Watts’ voice has been described as raw and hauntingly beautiful, which perfectly compliments her rhythmic fingerpicking on acoustic guitar and her old soul as a lyricist. As a vocalist, Watts has been compared to Joni Mitchell, having the same vocal range and timbre as Joni. In live performance, Watts musically captures her audiences with her on-stage performance charisma, use of her vintage würlitzer electric piano, and loop station to create an orchestra of sounds and stunning harmonies. Kaleigh’s musical influences consist of Joni Mitchell, Feist, KT Tunstall, and Laura Marling.

During her studies at Carleton University, Watts has been mentored by many notable Canadian musicians, including Juno Award and Canadian Folk Award winner Lynn Miles, Ottawa singer-songwriter Megan Jerome, and jazz instrumentalist and composer Mark Ferguson. Over the course of her training and mentoring, Watts has developed an eclectic and diverse vocal resume, with performing genres ranging from electronic pop, indie, folk, blues, and jazz. Watts’ voice and lyrics have been featured on electronic tracks with Ottawa EDM duo Common Citizens, and as an alto jazz vocalist in the Carleton University Jazz Ensemble.
