    Question/Problem

A problem is when something happens,

and you don't want it to happen. In

Moby's case, his plant won't grow. So,

you have to recognize the problem.

A problem may even start with questionthat you will observe.

    Inference/Hypothesis

Use your observations, and inference, to helpyou find what is causing the problem.Forexample, Moby's is watering his plant toomuch.

    Materials

The materials is what you'll needfor your experiment.

    Observations

You write what you see, feel andthink. For example, if something has

    changed between the beginning and

    the end.

    Conclusion

    Think your conclusion/ outcome.

    Repeat the experiment several times

and see if you come out with the good

solution. Remember to include if yourhypothesis was proven right or was

    proven wrong.

    Evaluation

    Evaluation is what you could

have done better. You must also

remember to include if youthink that your experiment has

    gone right or wrong.

    10/29

    Variables

The variable is the change between two

objects. For example, the four trees are thesame, but the one thing that will change is

the amount of water they will receive.

    Bias

Bias is some thing that is unfair in

your experiment. For example, youcan setup your experiment

    differently and that can change

your result. So, your not being fair

    in your experiment.

    Theory

A theory is almost just as a statement.

It has been repeated and confirmedthrough testing your expirments.

    Law

Law is statement is based on

    Expirement #1:Animal camouflage

    Problem:

    how does camouflage e"ect vision?

    Hypothisis:

People would choose contrasting colourover the matching colour.

    Material:

    -Scissors

    - 1 a4 page of green paper cut into 1 inch

    squares

-1 a4 page of green paper cut into 1 inch

    squares

-1 page of brown paper cut into 1 inch squares.

Method:1. Cut one page of brown paper into one

    inch squares.

    2. Arrange the squares onto a piece of green

    paper.

    3. Give subjects, 5 seconds to grab as manypieces of paper as they can. Limit subjects

to picking up one piece at a time.

    15/29

    Conclusion:

    Evaluation:

Our experiment went good. Our hypothesiswas correct. People chose more brown

than the camouflaging colour. As you can

see in the graph there 35% chose green,

    65% chose brown.

The thing we could of done better is maybe

get a bit more people. We could of maybe

even done the test more times, maybe doing

    a blind study.

    Problem:

    Experiment#2:Eggsp

    eriment

    Hypothesis:

    Materials:

Our problem is we can't tell the

    di"erence between a raw egg and a

    boiled egg.

    - Two raw eggs

    -one boiled egg

    -one hard surface.

    Observations:

    - We tried putting them in water to see if the

raw eggs would float and the boiled would

sink. We did that and they all sank. Then we

shook them up-down to see if we could hearthe liquid of the egg. But, we couldn't so we

shook them sideways, and it worked.

A cooked egg will spin way better than an

    raw egg.

  • 8/13/2019 Kalea's Scientific Method

    17/29

    Method:

    Observations:

We observed that the one egg spin very

quickly. The other two spun very very slowly.

    1. You must first spin each egg on your

    hard surface.

    2. Record your information,3. Enjoy!!'

    Conclusi

    on:

    Evaluation:

I feel really confident that the egg spinning

was the fastest was the boiled. The two other

egged were the two raw eggs. Then wecracked them to see if we were right. We

    were.

We may, do the test again, or we may get more

raw eggs. Or maybe do the test on a di"erent

    surface.

    Fractured Play DoughExperiment #3:

    Problem:

    Observation:

    Hypothisis:

Can you make tension fractures inplay dough?

The incisions in the middle won't really change.

Source:Tittle:Blue Ribbon Science Fair ProjectsAuthor: Glen Vecchione

    Page:170-172

We saw that the one incision did have quitea lot of change. When, we out threeincisions it did not not do much change.

    Same, for the five inscions.

    Materials:-Flour-Salt-measuring cup-spoon-cream of tartar-food colouring(optional)-boiling water-veg. Oil

    -knife-chopsticks

    Method:

1.Take your play dough and square dowels.Stretch ya play dough and take your dowelsand put them and the sides.2.Then, take an knife and make a cut straightdown .3. Hold on the dowels and then stretch them.

    4. Watch and observe.5. Take play do and mush all together again.6.Repeat but this time put three cuts straightdown in the venter.7.watch and observe .

8.Mush and repeat but this time add five cutsin the centre.9.Compare results.

Experiment #4: MethaneProblem: If you put garlic in a cow food, will it stop the cue from producingmethane?

Hypothisis:My hypothesis is that it will helpbecause it will reduce the amount do

    methane the cows produce.Materials:

    -6 cows-Garlic-cow food-6 large air tents

  • 8/13/2019 Kalea's Scientific Method

    21/29

    Method:

    1. Get your six cows.2. Put in plastic tents. One each.3. Then, put garlic in three of the cows food. Don'tdo anything to other three cows. Leave cow in forthree weeks.4. Take an air sample every hour days.5. Release the cow.6. Compare your data to the cows you ate thegarlic and the cows you didn't.7. Repeat tests and confirm.

    Experiment#5:Washing

Problem:Which laundry detergent is thebest?Hypothesis:I think _______ willbe the best.

Materials:- 15 small sheets whitefabric-Washing machine- 5 different detergents- soda-BBQ sauce

    -coffeeExperiment detergent rating system

  • 8/13/2019 Kalea's Scientific Method

    23/29

    Method:

    1. Get only 5 white fabric then take your BBQsauce and get stains on them. Take anotherfive get a soda stain on them. Get your last fiveand get a coffee stain on.2. Take five BBQ stained fabric pieces and and

label them 1a, 1b etc. Then, for coffee 2a andthe soda 3a.3.Wash each piece for 45min with your fivedifferent detergents.4.Now, once done washing lay all of your fabricpieces out.5.Have a look at each one.6.To make the scale it must be from 1-5. 1isvery bad, 2 is bad, 3 is okay, 4 is great and 5 is

    awesome.

7.Now, rate it and turn it into points. 1 is onepoint, 2 is two points etc.8. Now, determine the winner.
