This year has been filled with creativity, growth, and rewarding community collaborations at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. We seek to offer everyone access to the uplifting and educative power of art, and without a doubt, our community partners play a significant role in helping us reach new audiences from diverse sectors of our community.

This year, we built vital new relationships with the Not-tawaseppi Huron band; the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish band; and the Pokagon band of Potawatomi Indians, who educated us and the community about the rich Native American heritage that exists in our region. Their generous partnership helped us appreciate life from a different perspective.

Alongside Mayor Bobby Hopewell, the Kalamazoo Com-munity Foundation, the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation, ERACCE, and many others, we were able to use the arts to build new bridges of respect and understanding. Part of this work resulted in nearly 1,000 community mem-bers visiting the KIA to help us welcome esteemed artist Kay WalkingStick (Cherokee).

Over a period of months, thousands of us together examined questions of history, community, and identity through programming that highlighted Native American culture in Southwest Michigan, and our connection to the world.

Also, learning through the works of artists like Marcia Wood, Wadada Leo Smith, and Sayaka Ganz again helped us start at home and circle the globe, exploring an array of their creative endeavors.

Dedicated KIA board, staff, faculty, and volunteers pro-vided powerful opportunities for area students, faculty, and the public to enjoy thought-provoking experiences and lively conversations at the KIA – a place where we cultivate learning and build community. Please continue reading to learn more about the exciting exhibitions, classes, and educational programs we shared in 2016-17 as part of our collective learning experiences.

Thank you for the absolutely essential role you play in sustaining our tradition of community service and excellence. We look forward to another innovative and dynamic year together.

A year of community collaboration and service

Our People, Our Land, Our Images

Our 93rd year comprised exhibitions by artists from near and far, both renowned and emerging. We began with an exhibition of work by Kalamazoo's own Marcia Wood, an accomplished sculptor from a time when there were few women in the field. Later, we showed the environmentally conscious sculpture of another woman, Sayaka Ganz, who creates colorful, provocative work from discarded plastic. Printmaking, ceramics, even the mystical musical scores of Wadada Leo Smith were featured this year, along with work by international artists of indigenous heritage. One of these, painter and educator Kay WalkingStick (Cherokee) visited Kalamazoo to share her wisdom and spirit with members and friends over the course of several days in support of her exhibition.

Acquisitions

We use our collection to support creative learning in our community. This year, the collection grew by 31 works of art. Many were gifts from artists, friends, and members, with the balance purchased for the KIA collection, supported by funds designated for that purpose.

Encouraging parents and educators to bring children to the museum is a key goal of our museum education staff. One of the entry points for children ages 4-8 is our free Art Detectives program, a monthly Saturday gathering that gives young children a chance to hear a story, visit the galleries, and make art to take home. Another welcome point is the Upjohn Mason Grandchildren Interactive Gallery, a colorful, hands-on space that is regularly refreshed with new books and creative art-making activities for kids ages 2-12. We graduated a new group of nine docents this year. These dedicated volunteers had 80+ hours of training over nine months. Docents serve as our tour guides for Sunday tours and school groups -- which brought us nearly 4,000 guests this year. More than 100 community outreach programs were offered this year, including our record-breaking exhibition opening for Kay WalkingStick: An American Artist in June. The Saturday event began with an outdoor blessing by elders from area tribes, and continued indoors with storytelling, dancing, music, and art. The library works with art school instructors each term to make library materials available to students in the studio and outside of library hours through curated book carts. More than 300 classes used these carts this year.Part of the museum's mission is to encourage artists of all ages. More than 1,000 school-age artists displayed their art in our galleries in the annual High School Area Show (which awarded $600,000+ in prizes and scholarships) and Young Artists of Kalamazoo County exhibition. The latter brings our highest-attendance weekend every year, and this year was a record-breaker with 3,283 attendees.

Counterclockwise from top left:• Visitors of all ages explore and learn about art in our galleries. • We often take activities out of doors, as with this summertime art-making activity in Bronson Park. • More than 3,000 guests used the Meader Fine Arts Library last year. • When we say "Art is for Everyone," we mean even the youngest visitors to the museum.• Our Upjohn Mason Grandchildren Interactive Gallery is the "please touch" space for children.

The art school's high-quality teaching and facilities combine to create unique and vital community-based art instruction for our region, and it should be no surprise that stu-dents and faculty have been included in regional and national art exhibitions.

Six residents were chosen for the 2016-17 school year, working in ceramics, printmak-ing, and jewelry. The program produces talented artists who go on to master's level programs and professional art careers.

The Rosemary and John Brown Fund supported materials fees and tuition reductions for children’s classes and camps, providing easier access to families at all financial levels. The fund also supported school improvements including new lockers, iPads, a sand-blaster, an air compressor, recalibrating the weaving looms, and new jewelry equipment.

Visiting-artist workshops allow our instructors to acquire new information and tech-niques and our students to learn from other instructors. This year, Steven Assael taught a figure-painting workshop, James Watkins taught alternative wood firing in ceramics, and Sarah Rehmer taught encaustic photo techniques. The Jim and Lois Richmond Workshop Fund subsidized all workshops, enabling more area artists to participate.

Our community of volunteers has a material impact on the scope of programs and services we are able to provide. These dedicated men and women help us present an ambitious calen-dar of programs. They staff the Gallery Shop and evening events; lead tours for learners of all ages; and weigh in on matters of policy, direction, and sustainability as board and committee members. Although we are unable to list all our volunteers, we are grateful for their meaningful contributions of time and insight.

The KIA is fortunate to have dedicated volunteers serving on two financial oversight committees. The Finance Committee reviews the annual budget proposal and recommends it to the Board; it also reviews actual operating performance relative to budget projec-tions throughout the year and reports the results to the Board.

The Endowment Committee reviews the investment performance of endowed funds and makes policy recommendations to the Board.

The committees jointly receive the report of audited financial statements and report the results to the Board. STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES
