    The Japanese Destroyer Kagero

    Waldemar Góralski

    ISBN 978-83-62878-85-7

The Japanese destroyers truly made their mark during the war in thePacific. Fast, heavily armed and manned by well-trained crews, theytook part in some of the most memorable surface and air-sea battlesof the Pacific War, but also in hundreds of lesser known actions. Thoseworkhorses of the Imperial Navy were employed in a wide variety ofroles – from direct action against enemy fleet to escort duties andeven pure transport tasks. Commander Hara Tameichi rightly obse-rves that it was the destroyers that bore the brunt of the fighting at

sea, and very few among them were as good as the Kagero class war-ships.

    The Heavy Cruiser Prinz Eugen

    Waldemar Góralski

    ISBN 978-83-62878-86-4

Following the defeat in the World War I, the Treaty of Versailles limited the ton-

nage of the German Navy to 144 thousand tons. Moreover, the treaty stipulatedthat new warships could only be built to replace the decommissioned ones. In1921 a new law was enacted which brought about the creation of the Reich-smarine. The few warships that Germany was allowed to keep were moderni-zed and new ones were being built to replace the obsolete ones. Constructionof light cruisers was a priority and the first of those, built to replace the Niobelaunched in the 19th century, was the Emden. I n 1927, during the disarmamentconference in Geneva, Germany demanded equal right as far as the expansionof the navy was concerned. Those demands were rejected, therefore, the Re-ichsmarine drew up the “expansion plan”. It stipulated construction of new war-ships within the coming years, including submarines, which were forbidden bythe Treaty of Versailles…

P-47 Thunderbot’s service outside western Europe, in three other

major theaters of World War II – the Mediterranean, Asia and Pa-cific – although perhaps not as publicized, was no less colorfuland varied, which makes it an excellent subject for a photo-story.During the long campaign in Italy, Thunderbolt was the best airinterdiction aircraft the Allies had; pitted against German and Italian fighters, it proved more than a match. In the Pacific, Thunderbolt easily held its own against Japanese fighters over New Guinea, and later over Ja-pan’s Home Islands. Armed with ‘fire bombs’, bazookas and other ordnance, it earned distinction as close airsupport aircraft during the invasion of Marianas. Also in China-Burma-India theater the P-47 excelled both asfighter and fighter-bomber, with the renowned Air Commandos, among other units.
