KAFCS Service Project At this year’s KAFCS Annual Meeting we are hosting a service project in which the items will be donated to our Award Banquet entertainment: Angela Seng’s mission project. We are asking each member to donate Mattel Barbie dolls and/or Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars. The Barbie dolls are part of Angela’s “Dolls on a Mission” while the Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars are “Cars with a Cause”.

Please bring a Mattel Barbie/Ken doll(s) with you when you register at the KAFCS State meeting on April 16th. The dolls do NOT have to be brand new because Angela Seng and her mother Shirley Foster refurbish gently used Barbie dolls. They do need to be actual Mattel Barbie/Ken dolls 1980 or newer. The dolls do not need to be clothed as Shirley makes outfits if they are not dressed. Dolls can be acceptable in any condition as long as there are not permanent markings (some markings are able to be removed), missing hands/feet, or chewed limbs. The hair can be in any condition as Angela has discovered, through trial and error, a conditioner to use on the hair to remove the tangles easily. And if the previous owner had played beautician with the dolls, she can restyle the hair. The cars do need to be either Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars. All the wheels need to be in working condition with no chipped paint.

Once these items are cleaned they are ready to be packed and sent with missionaries to places all across the world. The reason why Angela prefers Mattel items is that these are easy to travel with the missionaries without taking too much extra baggage space. Check out thrift stores, consignment shops, yard sales, or even your own homes to see if you have any dolls and/or cars that you can donate.

Let’s fill a basket of dolls and cars for Angela Seng! For more information check out Angela’s website www.angelasengmusic.org or her Facebook page.

Awards and Nominations

One of my favorite times of the year is spring; not only is it

beautiful outdoors but it also means it is time for our annual

meeting! New plants, new flowers, and new awards to be

given to deserving KAFCS members.

Thanks to your nominations and involvement, we are able to

acknowledge the great things FCS professionals are doing

around the state. I look forward to recognizing many FCS

professionals for their hard work by awarding the following in

April:

• KATFACS Teacher of the Year Award

• KAFCS Leader Award

• KAFCS New Achiever Award

• KAFCS Outstanding Student Award

• Friend of KAFCS Award

• Wiley Berger Award

• Karen Davis Parker Outstanding Extension Agent Award

Nominees will be notified by February 15th.

I want to encourage you to participate in another opportunity

this spring: bring at least one new FCS friend or coworker

with you to our annual meeting.

You can further encourage your colleagues to apply for

membership at www.aafcs.org/join so they, too, can reap the

benefits of KAFCS membership.

I look forward to seeing you in April!

~Caylin Knight, Awards and Recognition Chair

Former KAFCS President Agnes Dickerson Durbin passed away on December 12, 2017, at Mayfair Manor in Lexington. Agnes served our association as President in 1985-86. Born December 12, 1937, in Kenton County, Mrs. Durbin was a retired teacher and employee of the State Department of Education.

Dear Kentucky Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, The transition from 2017 to 2018 provides an opportunity to reflect on special relationships and the continuity they provide in our lives. Our colleague and friend Peggy Meszaros was the original force behind the Centennial Scholar Research Fund initiative. She is greatly missed within our profession, but her inspiration lives on. Thank you for the gift from the Kentucky Association of Family and Consumer Sciences to the AAFCS Centennial Scholar Research Fund. I am pleased to share with you that 43 donors contributed to the Fund, and our gifts totaled $12,435. Working together, we can rise to any challenge. With every good wish for 2018, Sharon Y. Nickols

Nominated by the University Joint Committee on Honorary Degrees and approved by the University Senate, Jewell Deene Ellis received an Honorary Degree of Humane Letters at the UK Commencement Ceremony on December 15. The degree recognizes extraordinary contributions to philanthropy, human development, education or societal well-being. Dr. Ellis, a past president of KAFCS and former educator and teacher trainer, who is originally from Boyle County, earned a bachelor's degree in vocational home economics from UK in 1951, and later her master's degree in education from UK as well. She taught at Nicholas County High School from 1951 to 1960, where she developed a reputation for innovative practices, both inside and outside of the classroom. She also supervised over 30 student teachers from UK. She then became a traveling teacher trainer at Murray State University, and a liaison with the Kentucky Department of Education, where she supervised home economics education programs. Soon after, she became director of the home economics unit for the department, serving in a variety of state educational leadership roles for 36 years, including the development of national standards for family and consumer sciences education.
