2 Corinthians 1:18-22The Christian life rests on a foundation of God's

promises for today and for the future. We can trusteverything that our heavenly Father has said becauseHis Word shows Him to be...

Truthful. The Lord knows what is true and speaks honestly in all matters. We can be assured of thisbecause He is holy; there is no sin in Him. He is also omniscient and understands everything (Heb. 4:12-13). His promises are based on His infinite knowledge and truthfulness. Faithful. Scripture compares the Lord to a shepherd who "gathers the lambs in his arms and carriesthem close to his heart" (Isa. 40:11 niv). What He has planned for us, He will bring to fruition (Rom. 8:28).Our heavenly Father does not waver in His intentions or will. Loving. God's love for us was demonstrated at the cross. He sent His Son Jesus to die by crucifixionand thereby take the punishment for our sins. The Savior experienced God's wrath against iniquity sowe might know only His love. This is the ultimate proof of His devotion to us. All-powerful. Divine power created the world and raised the Savior back to life, so we know God hasthe ability to carry out all His plans. Our omnipotent Father can keep every one of His promises. A promise is valuable only if the one making it has trustworthy character and the ability to carrythrough. Our heavenly Father is truthful, faithful, loving, and all-powerful. We can base our entire lifeon His promises, secure in the knowledge that He will do just as He has said.

Whatever would we find to do ifwe didn’t have to constantly dealwith changes -- or fix stuff and tidythings up? We might be forced towatch TV all the time or read tonsof books. If you’re a sportsman, youmight have to hunt or fish all thetime. What a bleak outlook. Itdoesn’t bear thinking about. This all occurred to me theother day as I was driving aroundthe ranch. I first went to the riverplace to consult with Ted about hishealth insurance. The companyhas discontinued his type of policy-- probably because it was too gen-erous so they weren’t makingenough money on it. Anyway, ifyou haven’t dealt with health in-surance lately, you’re lucky. It’s apain as is all insurance. There arecountless companies and tons ofoptions to consider. First you haveto decide how much coverage youwant followed by consideration ofcost, deductible, co-insurance(whatever that is,) and a few dozenother things. It takes quite a bit ofreading and thinking to come upwith a policy that might acciden-tally be the right one for you. Thetotal time spent is considerable.Without dealing with changes ininsurance, Ted and I could havewatched more TV. On the way back out of the riverranch, there was Jim on the roadfixing a gate. That bit of wirestretched between two posts hadbeen closed when I went throughthe car gate next to it earlier, but Iguess Jim didn’t think it wouldstay that way very long withoutsome upgrading. Anyway, he hada spool of barbed wire and theother tools and supplies needed toeffect repairs. He was making goodprogress, as far as I could tell, until one of his leather gloves gotmisplaced. Barbed wire and barehands don’t go together very well. The glove was eventually run toearth and work resumed. Withoutgate disintegration, Jim mighthave had time to take a nap oreven go fishing, and fishing was apossibility. The river and stockdams were not frozen over thatday which is a little odd for thefirst week of December, but thereyou are. Sometimes there’s ice afoot thick already by Thanksgiv-

ing, never mind Christmas. When I got back to the homeranch, semi-resident-carpenterChad had most of the north wall ofthe car garage torn off. It was, ac-cording to him, a load-bearing wallthat was no longer bearing muchof anything. The two-by-fours hadrotted off at the bottom, and therewas some danger of collapse. Thiswas by no means the oldest build-ing on the place, but somehow itwas the one falling apart. I’m notsure what caused the wood to gobad, but it was probably a combi-nation of poor siding and maybethe vermiculate Dad had used tofill the bottom half of the wall. Theinsulating material might havecollected moisture let in by the badsiding and promoted rot. Whoknows the whys and wherefores, but there was a definite problemthat needed to be addressed. With-out having to deal with collapsingbuildings, Chad could have gonedown to the river place and shot afew more prairie dogs. That issomething he enjoys quite a bit. Hedid eventually call it a day, grabhis gun and go, but it was fairlylate in the day by then. He claimedhe needed a change from carpenterto varmint-control officer. A bit later I was scratchingaround in the basement looking forsome stuff when I noticed a pile ofcardboard boxes needing disposal. The floor needed to be swept aswell. I didn’t have time right thento do much cleaning, but the workis still there needing to be doneand promising to take up some ofmy leisure time in the near future. If you look around anywhere youhappen to be, there usually issomething or other that needscleaning or straightening. The topof my desk is a case in point. On the other hand, maybe weneed change and all the otherthings that take time. Any usefuland necessary work tends to makeus think we are accomplishingsomething and are therefore usefuland indispensable people. It helpsthe ego a bit. Well, in any case, there is no shortage of work outthere that we can do to build oursense of self-worth. Aren’t you justtickled to death about that? Isurely am.

Feeling Useful

Kenny and Roxie Fox drove toWall on Saturday to do some teamroping at the indoor arena. Roxiehas done a lot of barrel racing inher lifetime, but roping is some-what new. As a result, she andKenny roped in the novice divisionso she could get the feel of it.Kenny said her horse was alsosomewhat of a novice, but they didokay and caught their first calfwithout much trouble. Kenny alsoparticipated in the “Draw Pot” and“Rifle” divisions. In the rifle part, you can win a rifle. In the other, you put your name in a pot, andyour team-roping partner’s name isdrawn out of the pot for you. Whenyou haven’t roped with someone be-fore, it adds a little interest to theproceedings. Kenny did okay onthat and came in first on one go-round and third on another. Eve and Abby Fortune drove toRapid City on Saturday to take inthe musical play, Beauty and theBeast. They enjoyed it quite a bit. When it was time to come home, however, the weather had turnedbad so they booked themselves intoa motel for the night and camehome on Sunday. By then, theroads and traveling weren’t toobad. Chuck, meanwhile, stayedhome and tended the home fires. Mark DeVries and family have,as usual, been attending wrestlingmeets. Gavin was in a meet atRapid City on Friday and Satur-day, and Mark went to Rapid onFriday but not Saturday. Geoffreywas in a meet at Pierre on Satur-day. He went there with Smileys. On Monday, everyone but Markwas headed back to school inKadoka. Mark needed to stay homeand do chores. Greg and Dana Badure and fam-ily were watching the National Fi-nals Rodeo on TV on Sundayevening, as they have everyevening since Thursday. Randy Pe-

ters joined them for that. Earlierthis week Brisa spent a couple ofnights with her friend, Tejai Sanft-ner, and Tejai’s dad, Tim. Theystayed at a waterslide motel east ofRapid City, which was fun. Thiswas the longest Brisa had beenaway from home without her folks, but she did okay as long as shecould call home occasionally. Backat home, three baby goats wereborn this weekend to add to theherd. Greg said Frank Carlson andDana are in cahoots when it comesto raising goats. They both likethem quite a bit. When you becomefriends with goats, of course, youcan’t eat them but can make somemoney if you sell them since theyare fairly popular at present.Badures milk some of the goatsfrom time to time, and have soldsome milk to a family in Kadokawho has a kid that’s allergic to cowmilk. Pam Osborn helped DanaBadure clean out her garage oneday so it could house some babygoats. On Sunday, Pam and Ericcut some wood. During the week,Pam helped Badures with the restareas east of town, and Ericworked as usual at Moses BuildingCenter in Philip. Delores Bonenberger said hergrandson, Kade, was around thisweekend helping here and there. He returned to North Dakota onSunday where he is helping Collerswith some water lines. Delores willattend her last county commissionmeeting this week since she is re-tiring as a commissioner at the endof the year. She has served for 16years and figures that’s about longenough. Larry Johnston will re-place her on the board. He was un-opposed when he ran for thatposition so he will be installed atthe January meeting.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard has pro-posed a balanced Fiscal Year 2014budget that provides more moneyfor education, medical services forthe poor and state employeesalaries. “South Dakota’s economy has re-covered better than nearly everystate in America. Our healthy econ-omy is partly due to getting our fis-cal house in order at the stategovernment level,” the Governorsaid. “As a result, my FY2014 pro-posed budget allows for modest, sustainable growth.” Gov. Daugaard outlined his newbudget proposal in an address tothe South Dakota Legislature. Themeasure balances the next budgetfor essential state services withoutincreasing taxes. It also leaves more than $16 mil-lion this fiscal year and over $10million in FY2014 uncommitted, allowing for a discussion betweenthe Governor and legislators nextsession on how to best use the pro-jected one-time funds. “This year, we can consider pro-posals about new growth and newideas. But as we go forward, it’scrucial that we maintain a struc-turally-balanced budget based onconservative revenue estimates,”the Governor said. “If we don’t, werisk a return to an era of ongoingexpenses exceeding ongoing rev-

enues. I have not recommendedthat we spend every last dollar –just as the Legislature did not ap-propriate every last dollar inMarch when the 2012 sessionended.” Among highlights of the Gover-nor’s proposed Fiscal Year 2014budget, which begins July 1, 2013,and ends June 30, 2014: •K-12 education would receive a3 percent ongoing increase •The Board of Regents would re-ceive an ongoing 3.2 percent in-crease •The four technical instituteswould receive a 3 percent ongoingincrease •Medicaid providers would re-ceive an ongoing 3 percent increase •State employees would receivea 3 percent ongoing increase Gov. Daugaard’s FY2014 budgetproposal, totaling $4.112 billion, would use general tax revenues of$1.323 billion, $1.699 billion in fed-eral funds, and $1.090 billion ofother state revenue sources. “My proposed budget heeds theprinciples to which I have beentrue to every year: Ongoing rev-enue pays for ongoing expenses,one-time funds pay for one-time ex-penses, and reserve funds are usedonly for emergencies,” the Gover-nor said.

Hantz acknowledged the absenceof some district members, particu-larly from the Martin lodge, whowere participating in the annualMartin parade of lights. Martin, though, will host next year’s dis-trict meeting. Hantz restated the hierarchy ofMasonic responsibility of family, job, then the lodge. “Family first, always,” said Hantz. “My obligation is to accept the re-sponsibility to travel all over thestate, and neighboring states, torepresent you and all Masons,”said Hantz. With a little over 5,000Masons in South Dakota, “We havedecided to do our best to keep thebrothers together and increase ourmembers.” The Grand Lodge meet-ing this year will be family ori-ented. “We are working onscholarships for the kids and givingto charities. We’ve got to keep ourroots growing.” One of the most community ori-ented programs supported by Ma-sons is the South Dakota ChildIdentification Program (CHIP). Apersonal identification package isgiven to parents of participatingchildren. The packets includes aphoto, fingerprints, DNA swab, and an audio/visual recording oftheir child. “I’m a 100 percent believer ingetting the older teenage girls in-volved in the CHIP program. It’snot just for little kids,” said Grant. “If you can get in with the school,

it really helps. We did our lastCHIP program on parent/teacherday,” said Thorson. Hantz praised the public accessi-bility and internal record keepingby Masons by computers and theInternet. “Computers are a greatthing. All this paperwork goingback and forth will stop. It’s all atyour fingertips,” said Hantz. TheSouth Dakota Masonic website ismygrandlodge.org. The district meeting concludedwith a 50-year pin presentation toIke Dale, Philip. Dale entered Ma-sonry in May 1961, and was raised

to Master Mason in March 1962. “I have a lot of stories. It’s beenquite an experience,” said Dale.“My friends, neighbors and broth-ers, it’s been a fun trip so far.” Thorson noted that the year Daleserved as master of the Philiplodge, 1969, was the year Thorsonwas born.

Fitting Exercise intothe Holidays

Between busy family activities, shopping trips, attending holidayparties, and cold weather, it oftenbecomes difficult to keep up withyour daily exercise routine duringthe holiday season. Taking a breakfrom your fitness program duringthe holidays will only leave youwith added pounds and morestress when the New Year rollsaround. The problem is that most Amer-icans don’t ever lose the weightthey gain during the winter holi-days, even if it is only one pound.Physical activity can be your secretweapon to combat the delicious, tempting foods that seem to beeverywhere through the holidayseason. According to the Centers for Dis-ease Control and Prevention(www.cdc.gov), adults need 150minutes of moderate (brisk walk-ing) physical activity or 75 min-utes of vigorous (jogging orrunning) physical activity perweek. Both types of activitiesshould include muscle-strengthen-ing activities on 2 or more dayseach week. Feeling stressed and over-whelmed is a common challenge

during the holidays. Physical ac-tivity decreases your chances of be-coming depressed, helps you feelbetter about yourself, aids in sleep-ing well at night, and assists youwith moving around more easily. Fit exercise into your daily rou-tine by getting your home readyfor the holidays. Decorating thetree, hanging up holiday lights andcleaning your house will burn calo-ries and you’ll feel productive. Some individuals look forwardto watching holiday TV specials. There’s approximately 20 minutesof commercials during an hourlong show. Use commercial timefor some quick exercise such as sit-ups, toe touches, or pedal a sta-tionary bike. Be flexible during the holidays. If you aren’t able to fit in yourusual work out due to an officeparty, fit a brisk walk into yourlunch hour. To increase your walk-ing distance, park your vehicle inthe lots farthest away from thestore. Try power walking whilewalking from store to store. To assist with time manage-ment, try combining exercise andfamily time. As an example, trybuilding a snow fort or snow manwith your children. A sledding tripis an opportunity for quality time
