You wouldn't notice Mark Atwood and Stephanie Lynch’s home the first time you pass it. From the street, it looks like many other houses in the Fleming Heights area of Halifax. Just a few minutes past the Armdale Rotary on Purcell’s Cove Road, the neighbourhood boasts a range of sleepy, 1960s-era bungalows with tidy, treelined yards.

Their home almost fits that pattern until a closer look reveals its uniqueness. Tucked in off the road behind some mature trees, the small brown bungalow has a sleek modern front deck, giving a hint about its contemporary interior.

Back in 2007, Mark, an architect, and Stephanie, an elementary school teacher, decided the 2,000-square-foot house was too small for their growing family and they embarked on a major renovation of the space.

“The original house had three bedrooms,” Mark recalls. “When we were about to have our third child, we thought we should probably add on.” But the renovation did more than just create extra space in the home. “We’ve really taken the house from something average to some-thing we think is pretty special,” adds Mark.

Born in Ottawa and raised in Winnipeg, Mark came to Halifax in 1992 to complete his master’s degree in architecture. “I managed to find work right after school and fell in love with the place,” he says.

Stephanie bought the small bungalow in 1999 and Mark moved in when they married in 2004. Built around the same time as other homes on the street, their home sits next to Sir Sandford

Fleming Park. The park’s wooded hiking trails and its large pond, Frog Pond, are popular spots for kids and families in the area.

Mark is an associate with Lydon Lynch, a Halifax architecture firm be-hind many prominent projects in the region, including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Pier 21: Canada’s Immigration Museum, the Waterside Cen-tre, which is a new commercial development near the Historic Properties in downtown Halifax, and the new platinum-designed LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Seaport Farmers’ Market on the Halifax waterfront.

The LEED system rates a building’s energy usage, water and air qual-ity, building supplies, among several other things. As a LEED-certified architect, Mark is devoted to green-building design. “It’s all fairly new to this industry but the projects we work on, almost all of them are some version of LEED,” he says. “Clients demand it. Given the choice of being green or not green, people want to be green.”

RENOVATION

Mark relished the chance of renovating his own home using some of the green principles he practises in his career. He added on 1,000 square feet of living space, a wall lined with windows, new siding for the exterior and—the renovation’s crown jewel—a green “living” roof over the new addition. Rather than black shingles, this section of the roof sports a large patch of live sedum plants that absorb excess water and keep the home cool on hot days.

The project took about one year of plan-ning and eight months of building, with Mark, Stephanie and their three kids—12-year-old Braeden, five-year-old Samuel and two-year-old Isaac—living offsite for the final four months of construction.

While Mark notes the initial focus of the renovation was to build a basement bedroom because “we had run out of bedrooms for our kids,” a big part of the project became ex-panding the living area of the main floor. With the backyard bordering the park, Mark wanted the home’s new layout to showcase views of the natural wooded area from the living room and kitchen. “I really wanted to add on in a way to take advantage of the backyard,” he says.

Originally, only a few small windows in the house faced the backyard, making the dining room and kitchen areas dark and lacking natur-al light. Mark moved the basement stairs from the back of the house over to the side, opening up the living room even more with a wall of windows facing the backyard. On the opposite wall, Marvin Integrity fibreglass windows bring in additional light. “We made our living room into a dining room,” Mark says. “We have a kids’ play zone now, a big family room with a fireplace, a TV cabinet and wood storage.”

They went with a minimal-ist design for the décor, enhancing the clean lines of the space and its open, airy layout. In the living room, they chose soft, natural col-ours of grey, green and cream.

Even with three busy children living in the house, everything seems to have a place out of view. The kids don’t seem to mind the look and feel of the space. “They love it, although they are prone to run around, hands above their heads, screaming with delight, which gets kind of loud at times!” Mark says with a laugh.

While the modern living room keeps the home’s minimalist style with just a few key pieces of furniture and minimal accessories, it doesn’t lack warmth and comfort. Mark de-signed and Andrew Watts installed a large set of floor-toceiling birch cabinets that house the TV and provide storage. The unit also holds a sleek Lennox wood stove from Roode and Rose that keeps the family cozy on cool fall days.

Providing views of the lush backyard trees, the seating from Sears includes a soft-grey microfibre loveseat with a low back and high, curved arms and a matching soft-green chair. A long, stylish ottoman matches the loveseat and provides extra seating. The block-style side tables in a light wood finish came from Atlantic Superstore. The furnishings sit together on a cream-coloured shag rug from Home Depot.

Connecting the living and dining areas is a low, long bookcase stuffed with books and toys for the kids. A large window brightens the din-ing area at the front of the space. At mealtimes,

Ann Thurlow has never met an eggplant she didn’t like. Well, perhaps those soft, heavily seeded ones that linger too long on the grocery-store shelf. Eggplant can turn bitter and mealy when it’s overmature and seedy, frustrating even the most ardent home chef.

But Thurlow no longer worries about this now that the Charlottetown home chef can buy as much fresh eggplant as she needs from a local grower. “When it’s in season I have it all the time,” she says. “If I could have it every day, I would. On my plate it’s like a potato.” Thurlow says versatility is eggplant’s greatest appeal. “You can make a full meal of it, a side dish with other stuff, a vegetarian dish if that’s your mood or with meat accompaniment.”

The taste of eggplant is hard to describe. Its dense, spongy flesh absorbs the flavours of whatever it’s cooked with. Its texture can be unpredictable—light and springy when seared quickly on the grill or dense and stringy after a few minutes in the roasting pan. “I love how it feels in my mouth—it’s sort of soft,” Thurlow says. “I’m thinking of nutty and earthy. It just tastes of itself. Part of it is truthfully because you cook it in olive oil.”

Upper Canard, Nova Scotia home chef Donna Crawford also matches eggplant with olive oil. “I peel them first, dip them in egg and breadcrumbs and perhaps some basil and fry them in hot butter and oil and they go crisp,” she says. “They have lovely flavour—I could eat any number of those.”

Noting that eggplant is one of her favourite ingredients, Crawford grows a long, purple Japanese variety called Little Fingers. She starts the plants on her windowsill each spring. “I have to grow my own so I can get a consistent supply,” she says. As an administrative coordinator with Horticulture Nova Scotia, Crawford says it’s been 10 years since anyone grew a large, commercial crop in the province. “And that’s a shame.”

Reaching its peak in late summer, eggplant needs a long, hot growing season—a reality that’s been a turn off for most East Coast farmers. But some growers are cultivating eggplant in small amounts in greenhouses or tunnel houses (a greenhouse where plants are in the ground).

Margie Loo, owner of Elderflower Organic Farm in Belfast, Prince Edward Island, says eggplant is her fastest-selling item at the weekly Charlottetown Farmers’ Market. “It doesn’t matter how many I take, I sell out,” she says. “There’s much more demand now, partly because people are more adventuresome with their food.” Loo has planted about 100 purple and black Italian varieties in low greenhouses. “They’re not hard to grow as there aren’t many insect or disease problems,” she says.

Eggplant is technically a fruit—a berry, in fact—although we eat it as a vegetable. A member of the nightshade family, it’s related to the potato and tomato. Eggplant is beautiful, ranging in shapes and sizes from a two or three-inch egg-shape to the most familiar glossy pear shape. Although most people recognize the dark-purple variety, colours can vary: cream, violet, green, pale yellow, red, or even purple and white striped.

Eggplant originated in India, with Arab traders spreading it throughoutthe Middle East, Europe and Africa, and then by settlers into the Amer-icas. It remains an important element of traditional ethnic cuisines such as Chinese, Greek, Turkish, Italian and Lebanese.

HOW FAST DO YOUTHINK YOU SKI? Probably faster than you think.

Last season, my buddy MikeMilne, editor of Boats & Placesmagazine, lent me a toy I’d never

used on a ski hill: a radar gun. Knowing the quality of skiers(and personalities) who would be attending the annual SkiCanada Test and Fête at Fernie last March, I brought it along,with the most sincere, scientific intentions.

Mike gave me a couple of tips before I sped off with it: “When you’re asked at the airport, never refer to the thingusing the ‘G’ word. Call it a ‘hand-held electronic speed-measuring instrument.’” He also suggested people are often“bolder” when they have something like a camera or radar gun pointed at them.

My colleagues didn’t disappoint me. One afternoon after theday’s testing was over, we found a groomed flat, empty slopewith no merging trails and took turns skiing fast past the gun. It took little effort, and guts, to get the screen to read threedigits—107 kph on slow, spring snow. And one of the hand-held-electronic-speed-measuring-device testers was on twintipskis! Surprisingly, 100+ kph doesn’t seem that fast. Even on arun-out smaller than any little Ontario hill, I pushed the numberon the screen above 70 kph—although it’s harder to use solowith the numbers all jiggly in front of your face. And the

perspective is a little different. It feels more like you’remeasuring the speed of the base area coming up at you ratherthan your speed as a moving object.

We tested how quickly big guys like Stein and Coutts couldrun at me in ski boots and slushy snow (11 kph), and theservice at The Wood and Gabrielle’s where we dined at lunch(much quicker). But the biggest surprise to me was the speed ofthe average skier. Forty to 50 kph seemed pretty typical forsome pretty typical skiers on a pretty typical blue run. I kept thegun for a couple of weeks after we flew home to Ontario andconfirmed just how fast we ski—especially private club skierswho are seemingly more confident than others with speed.

Since the completion of my not-so-exhaustive ski speed study(Mike wanted his gun back), I attended a seminar at Sun Peaksgiven by Jasper Shealy, professor emeritus, industrialengineering, Rochester Institute of Technology. Dr. Shealyfrequently teams up with Carl Ettlinger and Vermont SafetyResearch, an independent snowsports safety research andeducation organization and, as far as I know, the only ones, inrecent times anyway, to have studied speeds on snow.

After selecting three typical U.S. ski areas to represent bothdestination and local skiers and snowboarders (one each inUtah, New York and Vermont), the team gathered 650 speeddata points of skiers and snowboarders to study. Unlike mylittle foray into speed science, subjects in this study didn’t knowtheir speed was being measured. Employees, those in lessons,children, Ski Canada Testers, ski patrol toboggans etc. weren’tobserved. Some food for thought:

» Typical speeds were consistent at ski areas across the U.S. with an average (mean) speed of 43 kph (standard deviation of 11.2 kph) and maximum speed of 83.7 kph. (Note: the average speed, 43 kph, was well above the ASTM Standards design evaluation criterion for helmets of 22.6 kph.)

» 84 per cent of skiers and snowboarders were in excessof 31.7 kph and 16 per cent in excess of 54.2.

» Speeds were highest on blue or intermediate runs, not black diamonds or green circles.

» Skiers go faster (on average, 5.6 kph) than snowboarders.» Those who use helmets go faster than those who do not.» The average helmet user has 25 per cent more kinetic

energy than the average non-helmet user.» On clearer days, when the visibility is better, people ski

and snowboard faster.» Males are faster (6.4 kph) than females.» Interviewed people were only “fair” at estimating their

speeds, on the whole, underestimating. The disparity increased as speeds increased.

peaks and so on. Frustratingly, only occasionally are my skis touching powder, never under it, and in those dreams I’m on slopes so steep and at speeds so fast I’m only skimming.

Writer, Sunshine Village pro-patroller, former pro-skier and new dad Kevin Hjertaas doesn’t need to dream about skiing, he just thinks back to yesterday or last week. Kevin’s list of some of the country’s best off-piste runs starts on page 46 this issue. It may not be the defi nitive register in your books, but it’s a great cross-section of what skiing beyond the ropes is all about for a lot of Canadians.

I’ve only done two on the list and even though it’s been several years, I vividly remember the hike and skin up, conversations at the top, the vistas, the powder, the pitch… Memories of skiing the same “somebody-shoot-me-now” runs that I’ve been doing at home for more than 40 years have long since turned into heavy spring slop.

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, and raised in Red Deer, Alberta, Hjertaas called local ski bump Canyon home until he was 18. Ten years ago he won a big-mountain comp at Sunshine and used the money to head to Alaska for the World Extreme Skiing Championships “and to take over the world.” It didn’t entirely work out, but the Rossignol skier has since been in every North American ski magazine and countless ski fl icks, working for videographers from Warren Miller to Ride Guide TV to Europeans of unpronounceable names.

Hjertaas now describes himself as “a rapidly aging ski bum”—he’s 34—“with a new knee, new job and new baby.” Although

Sunshine is technically his home hill, his favourite “ski area” is simply the backcountry of Banff National Park. With a 2010 winter slate of backcountry camps and courses, as well as studying to become a mountain guide, Hjertaas’s season sounds a little serene given his reputation, but when I pushed him on one trip planned with fellow pro-skier Chris Rubens, I didn’t get very far. “It’s kind of a secret,” he told me in November. “It’s in Canada, but I don’t want to say where because I think it’s a fi rst descent.”

Stories that come out of adventures like fi rst descents are what his new website www.behindthelines.com is all about. Developed with several hard-core colleagues, and with the support of the Canadian Avalanche Association, Behind the Lines is fi lling up with video clips and interviews with pros and amateurs about all the planning and education that went into the making of the video or magazine cover shot.

“This website is about saving your life,” he advocates, “so you can ride the gnarliest lines, huck the hugest air and be blissfully stoked as you drop into the deepest pow till the far off end of your days.”

Designed for the younger demographic to appear more entertaining than instructional, Hjertaas et al hope to leave the user with better snow skills and a new or renewed interest in gaining more knowledge on avalanche preparedness, as well as supply current snow news feeds to be consulted regularly. Says Hjertaas, “The best riders aren’t the best because of what their bodies can do, but because of what their minds can do.” ❄

A London, Ontario, couple was forced to choose between renovating or moving when their entertaining needs began to outgrow the small, outdated rooms in their 40-year-old brick home.

After 10 years of debating the merits of remodeling, they succeeded in transforming a dysfunctional floorplan into a contemporary living area that’s as comfortable for 20 guests as it is for two.

The Martins had an overall vision for their home and were partial to a pared-down design that would showcase their main living areas. The original floorplan consisted of a small kitchen, a cramped eating area and a sunken family room with parquet flooring and a drop ceiling of knotty pine.

The eating area was so small it was impossible to seat more than six people for dinner. “That was a big part of

it, to have a space that was big enough that we could have a large group over and not feel separated from where everyone else was,” says Sandra Martin.

The couple con-tracted Zoltan Balogh of Duo Building Ltd. to undertake a reno-vation and addition. The project involved bumping out the rear of the home in staggered depths of 10 and 15 feet to give them larger, more functional rooms and a better view of their park-like backyard.

Installing your own trim gives you creative control and personal satisfaction - and it saves you money

Installing trim around doors, windows, built-ins and walls is a do-it-yourself job that helps side-step the main chal-lenge plaguing most building and renovation projects – lack of money. While things like a durable roof, energy efficient insulation systems and bounce-free floors must always be installed at specific times during the construction process, trim can wait for later without consequence. As money and time become available down the road, you can put up great trim, financed with your own sweat equity and very little cash. Creative control, personal satisfaction or lack of skilled professionals where you live are other reasons to install trim yourself, but whatever your motivation, there are seven tricks that make all the difference.

Trim carpentry is about joining wood to tight toler-ances – sometimes down to a few thousandths of an inch in the case of stained trim – while relying on little more than hand-eye coordination. There are subtle tricks to creating completely tight joints, but before you get start-ed, you need to understand the different requirements for trim destined to be painted, and trim that’ll be stained to let wood grain show through. Less-than-perfect joints on painted trim can be filled with latex caulking before painting, invisibly concealing gaps that would otherwise look terrible. But there’s no substitute for accuracy when it comes to stained trim installation, as filler in joint gaps would remain visible and ugly under a transparent finish.

TRICK#1: MARK CUTS WITH A KNIFEOnly the sharpest pencil makes a mark you can trust for cutting, but then it’s not sharp any more. This is where a utility knife can help. The sharp tip makes a consistently thin, crisp, straight mark that’s easy to follow with a saw. Place a piece of trim in position where you want it to go,

then use the tip of the blade to make a mark. When it comes time to cut the trim, have strong light shining on the wood and sneak up to the knife mark with several shal-low cuts until you’re right on the waste side of the line.

TRICK#2: USE THE RIGHT BLADEEvery power saw is only as good as the blade it spins, and a fine carbide blade designed for crosscutting solid wood

is the biggest technical advantage you can give yourself when it comes to trim work. Don’t attempt any trim job without one. Blades that come on new saws are rarely up to the job of cutting well, so prepare to spend $80 to $100 for a great blade that’ll last a lifetime with regular

tools | air apparentThere are three traditional air nailers that make sense for trim installation, and the kind you use depends on the work you choose. 18-gauge finishing nailers have been favoured for years to secure medium-sized trim, but their 1.5-inch maximum nail length means they fall short for jobs like securing a door casing. 16-gauge nail-ers shoot thicker fasteners up to two inches long, making them more versatile. 15-gauge nailers are rare, but shoot an even thicker nail for securely fastening large quarter-round and thick trim.

innovation | one-cut crownA Canadian innovation has just hit the market, and it makes it a whole lot easier to cut crown moulding accurately. Called Flip Face, this factory-finished crown has identical profiles on both sides, so either surface can be installed facing outwards. Make one 45-degree mitre cut and both resulting pieces fit together after flipping one over. Single-cut joinery makes it easier to succeed, speeds progress and reduces waste.

Even after thinking about the renovation for 10 years, Sandra says she’s still surprised her vision and the final results have meshed so seamlessly.

“I enjoy coming home every day and looking at it, which I never used to do. . . . I had in my mind the kind of look I wanted to achieve and I have to say it turned out exactly the way that I had pictured. That’s what amazes me – it ended up being exactly what I wanted in the end.”

The experience of renovating the home was also an adventure. Sandra says she enjoyed sourcing finishes and features at suppliers’ stores.

“The main thing is to be patient and have fun with it. It was a bit of an adventure. You have to enjoy the process and not just the results. We really did enjoy ourselves – I’d do it again in a minute.” HC

There are three reasons advances in tool design continue to accelerate

beyond even the most optimistic pre-dictions made fi ve years ago: improved battery technology, speedier delivery of new tool designs to market, and more integrated feedback loops between tool users and manufacturers. These factors have given us tools that routinely double or triple construction efficiency, while also reducing the need for specialized trade skills. And nowhere is this more evident than with 12-volt lithium-ion cordless tools.

Bosch was the first to offer sub-compact 12-volt, lithium-ion cordless tools back in 2007, but this past year has seen the greatest innovation from other companies. Milwaukee currently offers the most 12-volt tools on the market – two dozen in all – including unique models that are brand new to

the building business. One in particular is part of an up-and-coming construction trend that’s becoming mainstream right now.

Milwaukee’s ProPEX 2432-22 expansion tool allows very fast and inexpensive connections of PEX water pipe. This flexible, plastic tubing is used for radiant infloor heating applications, water supply lines and fire sprinkler installations, and the most efficient connection systems make use of a property that’s found only in the highest quality PEX pipe.

all other models seem second-rate by comparison.Instead of long, cumbersome sliding rails, the GCM12SD

uses two beefy articulated arms. As the motor and saw blade moves forwards and backwards during use, these arms never extend beyond the back of the saw. Besides making the saw about 30 per cent to 40 per cent shorter, the articulated design lets you use the tool in a much smaller space. The shorter design also makes it easier to rig up dust collection if you’re using the saw in a workshop situation.

The big question with the GCM12SD is how precisely the arm system supports the motor and saw blade. Any slop in the mechanism would translate into a serious inconsistency from one cut to the other. In my shop tests I found the hinge points on the arms rotate very precisely. There’s no movement in the joints at all, and if slack ever does develop between swiveling parts after extended use, you can adjust it out with an Allen key. As long as you avoid applying sideways pressure to the saw handle as you chop downwards, there’s no more unwanted side-to-side movement of the blade than what you’d find on a conventional, rail-equipped sliding mitre saw. Current Canadian street price for the GCM12SD is $799.

As useful as power tools are, specific hand tools are still part of building. Chisels are a case in point. They’ll always have some role to play in the highest quality framing, but there’s a problem. Typical chisels are designed for use at a workbench, and aren’t well suited for the rough-and-tumble world of outdoor framing. Wood-handled chisels don’t endure moisture happily, and few plastic-handled chisels have decent metal in their blades. That’s why a set of all-steel, French-made carpenter’s chisels caught my eye. Besides the fact that you can hit these things with any kind of metal hammer (even hammers with serrated faces), they’re made from exceptionally good steel. It holds an edge at least as keenly as any of my fine bench chisels, and there’s no separate handle to work loose from the blade. Ranging in price from $14.50 to $23.50 for chisels from ¾" to 1 ½" wide, they’re cheap enough that you don’t need to get uptight no matter how rough the conditions. A set of four costs $63.00 from Lee Valley Tools.

Anchoring deck boards invisibly yields a much better deck than screws, but there are two problems with this approach. Most invisible anchoring systems are expensive, and many are slow. Some are both expensive and slow, and that’s why the HID-Fast deck board nailer is so impressive. Not only are the fasteners inexpensive, but it’s hard to imagine any kind of a fastening system that could work more quickly. The air-powered, hammer-actuated design is why.

The HID-Fast looks and operates like a hardwood flooring nailer. Place the tool against the edge of a deck board, then thunk the trigger pad on top with a rubber mallet. This triggers the release of air pressure that fires a stainless steel fastener through the edge of the board and down into the top of the underlying joist. As fast as you can move the tool over and hit the top, another fastener shoots out. Since the fasteners are curved, they’re oriented properly to provide a solid grip. The head of the fastener is also shaped to do two additional jobs. A T-shaped design at the head-end of each fastener maintains a

consistent 1/8-inch gap between rows of deck boards as they go

down, while anchoring spurs extend beyond these heads for gripping into the first side of the next row of deck boards to be installed. Place the board you’re fastening onto the floor joists, then use a rubber mallet to hit the open edge of the board, sinking the spurs from the previously driven fasteners into the hidden edge of the deck boards. The process is very much like installing hardwood flooring, and much faster than any other decking method – even faster than screws. The mallet-actuated feature also helps straighten out curved deck boards by giving them side pressure while the fastener is being fired. HID-Fast costs $550 and is available from Deck Masters of Canada.

The advance of tool technology continues to surprise many people in the construction world. The innovations aren’t just continuing, they’re accelerating in ways that are changing the way everyone builds.

Early Bird GEts thE WormIf you build to make money, there’s something you need to understand about advancing tool technology. Although the best new tools continue to make renovating and building faster and easier, this change only translates into greater financial profits to the extent that you’re competing against builders who haven’t yet adopted that same technology. Once the majority of professionals started using roofing nailers, for instance, the going rate for asphalt roofing jobs dropped in direct proportion to the efficiency gains. The same thing happened when framing nailers became mainstream on Canadian building sites during the 1990s, and again as cordless screw driving tools eliminated the inefficiencies of tripping over extension cords. All else being equal, you’ll earn more money than the next guy as long as you have more efficient tools. These days new tools usually offer financial advantages for two to three years after introduction. After that, the ante is upped and you’ve got to use them just to stay profitable because everybody else is.

Innovations aren’t just continuing, they’re accelerating in ways that are changing the way everyone builds.
