TCAEY-THAEY 105÷111 AdaptiveFunction

4

Adaptive Function The AdaptiveFunction makes it possible to adapt the chiller/heat pump's operati ng parameters to the load conditions of the system in which it is installed, optimising consumption, ef ficiency and the useful life span of the components. Operating logic The control manages the operati ng/shutdown cycles of the compressor, adjusti ng them to the char acteristics of the system, taking into account the ther mal inertia of the hydr aulic circuit and preventing the compressor from dangerous rapid-sequence start-ups.

TE = Actual operati ng time TM = Minimum operating ti me

○ The control acts partl y as a water buffer tank si mulator. In fact, by monitoring the dynamics of the system, it makes it possibl e to decrease the number of hourly starts of the compressor, extending its ac tual operating time. ○ In particular, in low-load conditions when the water temperatur e decreases (chiller) or increases (heat pump) ver y rapidl y, the algorithm delays compressor shutdown, replacing the ther mal inertia that would be created by the water buffer tank.

SIMPLE SYSTEM The user only needs to establish the desired set-poi nt, si nce the other parameters are adapted to the system by the algorithm. NO TANK The Adaptive Function of a water buffer tank ensures long-lasting reliability of machines without a tank or in any case maki ng it possi ble to use tanks of reduced sizes, with clear advantages in terms of the size of the machine. LESS l/kW IN THE SYSTEM The Adaptive Function makes it possible to r educe the l/kW of the system, while at the same ti me ensuring compressor safety and long-lasting reliability of the machi ne. Generall y speaki ng, at l east 10 l/kW are required i n a sys tem equi pped with a chilling machine without adapti ve control, and onl y 4 l/kW in a system equipped with a chilling machine with adapti ve control. It is thus clear that in process applications that require control of water temperature, it is al ways preferable to use a water buffer tank in order to have a greater amount of water in the sys tem, which in turn ensures good ther mal inertia of the system even with the machi ne off (see graphs Sys tem Comparison). REDUCED CONSUMPTION The Adaptive Function allows a reducti on in the number of machine start-ups with clear advantages in terms of electricity consumption.

The graphs of system comparison refer to three different system applications. The first one consi ders a system with no adaptive control and no tank. T he second is for a system with adaptive control and no tank. The third is for a system with adaptive control and tank. Notice that between the first and second system there is a decrease in compressor starts, and that they drop dramatically in the third system, where there is adapti ve control combined with a water buffer tank.

Energy efficiency at partial loads - ESEER index

○ The E.E.R. i ndex represents an es timate of the energy efficiency of the cooling unit in nominal design conditions. In reality, the operating time of a chiller in nominal conditions is usuall y less than the operati ng time i n partial load conditi ons. ○ The E.S.E.E.R. (European Seasonal E.E.R.) is an index that estimates the average seasonal energy efficiency of the cooling unit i n four load and water temperature conditi ons. Generall y, two water chillers with the same E.E.R. may have dif ferent E.S.E.E.R. values. In fact, for a water cooling unit, the average energy efficiency depends on design choices and on the temper ature of i nlet water at the condensing heat exchanger. ○ The E.S.E.E.R. energy index, introduced by the European Community (Project E.E.C.C.A.C. - Energ y Efficiency and Certificati on of Central Air Conditioners), is characterised by the water temperatures (see table “B”) and by the energy weights that are assigned to the four load conditions consi dered in the calcul ation: 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%.

ESEER = 3xEER 100% +33xEER 75%+41xEER 50% +23xEER 25%

100 where EER100% EER75% EER50% EER25% represent the efficienci es of the cooling unit in the four load conditions and at the temperatures i ndicated in table “B”. The data is calcul ated usi ng Eurovent methodology. The pump absorption (if present) is not taken into consideration.

Performance Choice of a chiller or heat pump and

use of the performance tables ○ For each model, table “D” provi des the cooling capacity (QF), and the total absorbed electric power (P), on the basis of the evaporator outlet water temperature with constant temperatur e differences ∆T = 5°C: the val ue of QT is the val ue of the heating capacity availabl e to the user in winter mode. ○ Within operating limits, the val ues i n table “D” may permit interpolations of performance but extrapolati ons are not per mitted. ○ Table “H” shows the values of correcti ve coefficients to be applied to the nominal values if water with gl ycol is used. ○ Graph “ 1” shows the pr essure drop values of the heat exchangers (with respect to the indicated temper ature differences). ○ Graph “ 2” indicates the useful static pressure of the pump (if present). Example:

○ Design conditi ons for a water-cooled chiller with i nstallation P: • Requested cooling capacity = 9.3 kW; • Temperature of water produced at evaporator = 13°C; • Temperature dif ferential ∆T at the evaporator = 5°C; • Inlet air temperatur e at condenser = 25°C. Using the val ues i ndicated in table “D”, and supposing a temperatur e differential of ∆T=5°C at the evaporator, it can be seen that model TCAEY 107 meets the requirement with: QF = 9.3 kW; P = 2.3 kW; The water flow rates G to be sent to the exchangers are obtained using the followi ng formul ae: G (l/h) evaporator = (QFx860) ÷ ∆T=(9.3 x 860) ÷ 5 = 1599.6 (l/h); Graph “ 1” shows the pressure dr op values ∆pw of the evaporator. ∆pw evaporator = 37 kPa; Graph “ 2” shows the residual static pressure val ues ∆pr available at the machine outlet 38 kPa.

○ The unit is equipped with thr eaded male water connections and a manual air bleed val ve positioned inside the shell. ○ It is advisable to install intercept valves the isolate the unit fr om the rest of the system. It is also advisable to ins tall elas tic connec tion joins. ○ It is essential to fit a metal mesh filter (squar e mesh of no greater than 0.8 mm) on the unit return piping. ○ The water flow through the heat exchanger should not fall below a val ue correspondi ng to a temperature differential of 8°C. ○ During long periods of i nacti vity, it is advisabl e to drai n the water from the system. ○ It is possible to avoid draini ng the water by addi ng ethyl ene glycol to the water circuit (see “Use of antifreeze soluti ons”).

Pump installation ○ The units are equipped with a circulating pump, expansion tank and safety val ve.

Tank & Pump installation ○ The units are equipped with an inertial water buffer tank, circul ating pump, expansion tank with membrane, drain cock and safety val ve.

Maximum water circuit content The el ectronic control equipped with the AdaptiveFunction makes it possible to r educe the amount of water in the system. For proper operation of the unit, a minimum amount of water must be ensured in the water system.

Use of anti-freeze solutions ○ The use of ethylene gl ycol is recommended if you do not wish to drai n the water from the hydraulic system during the wi nter stoppage, or if the unit has to suppl y chilled water at temperatures l ower than 5°C The additi on of glycol changes the physical properties of the water and consequentl y the perfor mance of the unit. T he proper percentage of glycol to be added to the system can be obtained from the most demandi ng operating conditi ons fr om those shown below.

○ Table "H" shows the multipli ers which allow the changes in perfor mance of the units to be determined in proportion to the required percentage of ethylene glycol. • The multipliers refer to the following conditi ons: condenser inl et water temperature 30°C; chilled water outlet temperature 7°C; temperature differ ential at evaporator and condenser 5°C.

• For different operating conditi ons, the same coefficients can be used as their variations ar e negligible.
