Unit CMED2: PRACTICE

Learning facilitator/tutor: Richard Berger

(Working) Title of project: The gender gap and issues of female authorship in mainstream cinema

What is your theoretical concept and how does it relate to your chosen area of contemporary media practice?

The theoretical concept here is authorship linked to feminist film theory. My chosen area of study is the gender gap at the level of director in UK and US cinema and if the films of women are judged to be different to those of men. It will also explore if this is considered to be a positive difference or a difference that might result in smaller profits.

Describe your artefact and explain how it will explore the concept described above

The artefact will be an audio-visual resource (5-8 mins). It will be used as a teaching tool to kick-start the exploration of the representation of women in film and the effect these representations might have on female identity. It will be a combination of interviews, commentary, vox-pop, screen recording of research and you-tube clips. It will move from highlighting the issue through primary and secondary research to examples of current practice, to a look at press coverage. [It may be structured in such a way to gather student responses at certain points rather than at the end]

What is the audience for your artefact and how will this be evident?

The audience is sixth form students about to start a unit of study on media and collective identity. The style and mode of address will be target the 16-18 age group and the case studies used will be recognisable to the students as they will be taken from current mainstream film releases. The student audience will also be evident in the structure of the resource as it will not be designed for a passive audience. Students will be expected to respond to the material during an after the viewing.

What, ultimately, do you want your artefact to ‘say’ or achieve?

I want the artefact to highlight the gender gap as an issue in filmmaking practice. The unit requires that we study how a particular group are represented and to what extent identity is increasingly mediated. Before jumping into textual analysis of films and feminist film theory, it would be beneficial for the students to know that issues of representation start at an institutional level.

What will your final submission consist of? (Describe what you anticipate handing in)AC1: 1000 words on the film director gender gap and issues of female authorshipAC2: 3000 words applying authorship theory to the work of Lynne Ramsay, Kathryn Bigelow and Jane Champion, and an exploration of the publicity surrounding the filmsAC3: 5-8 minutes audio-visual resource to highlight issue for students and engage them with the theoryAC4: 500 word justification of the design of the artefact. Student responses (either on video or on paper)AC5: Blog containing all work, reflecting on work at different stages (with inclusion of feedback gathered along the way). Evidence of student responses. Evidence of peer review. Audio or video reflection on student feedback, on my project, and peer review. Consideration of what has been learned.
