Grand Knight’s ReportMy Brother Knights:

I hope everyone enjoyed a Merry Christmas and had a Happy New Year. It is hard to believe that 2011 is already here. Before we start to look ahead let us take a moment to look back and acknowledge some of the events our Council participated in.

• Recruiting — our Council Recruiting Coordinator, Manny Landeros, was extremely busy recruiting new members. On November 20th and 21st Manny spoke after all the masses at St. Anthony’s Church. All of Manny’s hard work has paid off, on December 8th the Council held a First Degree for new members. Please join me in welcoming the following men into our council:

Victor Arellano Stanford Castillo Jr.Jason Proctor Joseph Rodriguez

I know I speak for all of our members in welcoming you to the Knights of Columbus. I hope we see all of you in the upcoming months. Also, we want to welcome a recent transfer to our council, Deacon Steve Serembe from St. Anthony’s Church. Welcome Deacon Steve to Council 3672! The Council looks forward to enjoying many activities with you in the upcoming years. This Columbian year the council’s quota for new members is 13. While this may seem an insurmountable task, Brother Manny has been working extremely hard and as of this writing we have five new brothers, with a couple of prospects in the wings. Please remember not to leave the recruiting task all up to brother Manny – if anyone knows of a Catholic man 18 years of age or older approach him about joining the Knights – explain to the possible prospect that men who are Knights always give more than they receive.

• Columbian Charities — as we all know the Council hands out Tootsie Rolls for donations for Columbian Charities. This year Deputy Grand Knight, Brother Allan Carter, oversaw the Council’s efforts for this worthy endeavor. Council members passed out Tootsie Rolls on three different weekends at St. George, St. Joseph and St. Anthony Churches, and with the help of our members the Council was able to raise

ONTARIO COUNCIL NO. 3672 • DISTRICT 99 • DIVISION IV • YEAR 58JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2011

over $4,000.00 to give to OPARC. Congratulations and of course thanks to Allan and all of the other Brother Knights that made this possible.

• Memorial Mass — On Thanksgiving Day members of the council participated in a memorial mass at St. Joseph’s Church. During the mass deceased members of council where remembered.

• Pancake Breakfast — On Sunday November 7th, Brother Ben Seno and his wife Darlene oversaw the St. Joseph School Pancake Breakfast with Brother Knights cooking and supporting the effort.

• Mary’s Mercy Center Bike Assembly and Toy give away — once again members of the Council helped assemble bicycles for Mary’s Mercy Center. On December 4th over 450 bicycles were assembled, with Council members working many hours to help out with this effort. On Christmas Eve, members of the Council helped with the toy handout to approximately 1400 needy children.

In the coming months there are many opportunities for all of our members to participate in worthy events. The newsletter will have information regarding these events that always welcome a helping hand. As we all know, the Knights of Columbus was founded on the principles of Charity and Service to others – this is why members of the Knights stand taller, because of our efforts and most importantly our gift of time, which can be the most precious gift we can give.

To all of our members that help out – thank you.

God Bless,

Reilly FlynnGrand Knight

As of this writing, Bob Lazenby is home trying to recover but is progressing slowly. Roman Riebli went in and had some cancer removed but was still in the hospital at the end of November. Lets keep these two in our special prayers and hope for speedy recoveries. Also remember in your prayers Brother Fernando Garcia, who goes in to the hospital for more tests before Christmas.

Anti Abortion Walkers Needed

The Anti Abortion walk could use more volunteers. So if you can spare an hour, join us at 5050 San Bernardino St., (which is just east of Monte Vista Ave.) in Montclair, at 8:00 AM on the first Saturday of each month and say the Rosary with other Brother knights and their families.

Fame for a Brother KnightBrother Stephen Wierzbinski Jr. was recently honored by Catholic charities. He was presented with the "Evening of Hope" award for 2010. Dr. Wierzbinski, a retired gastroenterologist and internist at Kaiser Permanente, is now active at St Joseph parish in Upland. Besides being a Eucharistic minister he is active with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and currently serves as Chairman of the Board at Catholic charities. Steven became a member of our council in 2007. Congratulations Steve.

Tootsie Roll Drive ResultsAre the Knights a great bunch of men? You bet they are. When there is work involved they are there. During the recent Tootsie roll drive there were many members who came out to help. Some went to all churches and masses to help and others came when they could. With their effort, the drive grossed over $4,000.00—the largest amount ever. All proceeds will be donated to OPARC. They will be very pleased with the results. Thanks to all the brothers and families who helped.

Welcome, WelcomeAt the December meeting, there were three new members installed into our council. They are Stanford Castillo, whose father is a long time member, Victor Arellano, and Joseph Rodriguez. Ok gentleman, now that you are members, the best way to get acquainted with the Knights is to get involved in some of our projects. And the best one to start with is the Fish Fry It will be held at St.

George Parish in Ontario and St. Joseph Parish in Upland during lent. Again, welcome, and we are proud to have you as members. Also, welcome to Deacon Steve J. Serembe of St. Anthony’s Parish. Deacon Steve recently transferred to our council from Del Rosa Council 4488, in San Bernardino.

Santa's HelpersJust before Christmas, four Brothers, Allan Carter,

Mark Ross, Jerry Vermillion and Bob Leonard spent most of a day sorting and cleaning volumes of books at Santa Claus Inc., which will be distributed to needy children. These jolly old elfs completed over 600 books for distribution. Since that day, several elfs returned to clean another seven boxes in time for Saint Nick. Good going Brothers.

Christmas Mary’s Mercy CenterEvery year Mary’s Mercy Center celebrates Christmas with families in need. It starts off with the bike assembly in early December where volunteers assemble bikes. This year, members of our council and their families helped assemble over

450 bicycles. The assembling process began at 8:00 a.m. and didn’t finish until 3:30 p.m. for the dedicated few. On December 23, volunteers help set up for the upcoming Christmas celebration at Mary’s Mercy Center in San Bernardino. And on Christmas Eve, the Christmas celebration begins at 7:00 a.m., but needy children start lining up with their families the night before the event. Some wait over twelve hours to see Santa Claus and get a chance to win a bike or other gift. Due to the economy, the need has grown within

the last few years with over 1400 children coming to the Christmas celebration. Volunteers, including members of or council and their families work hard to provide a meaningful Christmas for those less fortunate.

And the Winners Are...This Year’s Turkey Raffle winners are David Schaefer, Manny Landeros, Mike Ramos, Robert Zangler, George Cericera, Tom Graham, Elmer Mopera, Michelle Leonard, Mark Ross and Joanne Carter. All winners received gift cards to Stater Brothers Market.

Partytime If you were unable to attend our annual Christmas party, you missed a great time. Our Grand Knight with the help of Xavier Lopez and a few other Brothers and Wives, put on a most delicious meal. Forty to fifty members and wives had a very enjoyable evening. Reilly had his wife organize a few

games with prizes to the winners. It was a way to get everybody up to move and work off some of the delicious dinner. Besides the main dishes there were lots of desserts, and you know Gloria Robinson brought two or three of them. After the party, I'm sure most scales took a beating and it was heard, "I'm going to lose weight starting in the new year" (Sound familiar).

The hosts for this year’s Christmas get-together was our current Grand Knight, Reilly Flynn, and his lovely wife, Heather. They did a great job and we thank them for their time and effort. It was a wonderful night!

Mark Ross, wife Sandie, Gilbert Maravilla, Allan Carter and Bob Leonard discuss something of importance prior to dinner at the recent council Christmas party.

Joel Clelland, Robert Stout, Tony Aranda and Mrs. Stout working hard on one of the Christmas quizzes that Heather had put together to test our knowledge.

Someone said the food was ready…Sandie, Gilbert, Carl Carroll, your newsletter editor “Sweet ‘ol Bob”, and Steve Flynn in line for the yummies. Lawrence Flynn and Allan Carter happily “dish it out” .

Pat and Jim Jackson with grandchildren and Francis Lopez in line for some of that wonderful food.

In our version of musical chairs, all of the attendees line up in a big circle and pass a gift until the music stops. Then a little bit of the wrapping is removed and the music resumes, until the gift is finally unwrapped and that person gets to open and keep it. Here, Sister Sheila passes the still wrapped gift to Rose Cantu while everyone else watches. It was nice to once again have Sisters Mary, Niamh and Sheila join us.

November-December 2010

Dear Brother Knights & KC Families,

It’s never easy to scale back your level of spending so you can increase your saving, but it’s a necessary component of your plan to retire early (or at all). You’ll soon get used to it and you’ll see your investments growing toward your goal. If you expect to get regular increases in your pay every year plus a bonus or a promotion once in a while, plan to put all of the new income into your savings. Hold your spending steady until you find that you’re ahead of your plan. Then you can cut yourself some slack for a job well done (Lee/Flewelling 114).

The above paragraph was taken from Dee Lee, CFP and Jim Flewelling’s, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Retiring Early. None of the information or assertions made in this book are endorsed by or promoted by the Knights of Columbus or this agent. And, this agent is not implying that any or all of the readers are less than smart when it comes to finances. That stated; I’ve been thumbing through this book for a week or so and thought that this excerpt was apropos for this point in time. Many if not most Americans are in a holding pattern right now because the economy and political state of affairs do not inspire much trust in the financial system or our future. People as scared right now. However, short of putting your money under the mattress or spending like there’s no tomorrow, consider this:

• The Knights of Columbus has been in business for Catholic families and individuals for almost 130 years.

• The Knights of Columbus remains 1 of 2 companies in the U.S. that still has the Top ratings from AM Best and Standard & Poor’s as well as the IMSA award for ethics in business.

• Check your bank or credit union. We have better rates! 3%-4% guaranteed and internal overall rates of return as high as 8.25% in certain Knights of Columbus programs.

• The Knights of Columbus has the IRA and the ROTH IRA. Save! Save! Save!• The Knights of Columbus has a consistent and excellent history of paying competitive

dividends.• MERRY CHRISTMAS! Consider a gift of Knights of Columbus insurance or an annuity…

They make wonderfully valuable gifts that last a lifetime. The gift that keeps on giving.

I have visited with many brother knights and their families over the last few years and some of you have done an amazing job saving for your long-term goals as well as your retirements. Some of you have not…. Please remember. We are always here. We are always safe, strong and 100% Catholic and prolife. We have the reasonably-priced solutions that you need to meet your goals. Call today for a review! The Knights of Columbus! Let us be your shield for life! God bless and enjoy the holidays!

Fraternally,
