Welcome to Week 6 Term 4 November 13, 2017
Thank you to the amazing team of parent helpers and teachers who made the Piggy Races and Family Fun Day
such a huge success. The weather was spectacular and the atmosphere full of positivity and happiness. It was
so lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves. I am so lucky to be part of such a wonderful school community.
An event like this can only be successful with the kind donations made by parents. We were inundated with
lollies, cakes, biscuits and slices, craft supplies, blocks of chocolate and the like - thank you for your support!
Year 4 Excursion
Thank you to Amanda Swain, Kellie Divall, Nicole Frost, Taylor Kelly and Cam Pryce for providing our Year 4
students with such a fabulous experience. I especially thank them for the care provided to all students for 24hrs a
day for three days.
In addition to supporting learning occurring in classrooms,
overnight excursions like this allow greater connections between
teachers and students, teachers and teachers and students and
other students to develop. They build independence, confidence
and resilience skills which allow students to step just a little bit
outside their comfort zone.
Remembrance Day Service
Thank you to Jordan Pattison and Neve Crotty for representing
Ben Venue at this important ceremony last Saturday. They did
an amazing job and this was clearly evident by comments made
by the local community. Ben Venue was the only primary school
represented.
2018 Classes
Planning for 2018 classes will begin shortly. In preparation for this, if you intend on leaving Ben Venue at the end
of the year, please notify me in writing ASAP. I have had a significant number of requests for enrolment next year
and it helps knowing in advance if I have places available. When planning classes for 2018 many factors are
considered. Whilst I will consider parent requests, these cannot always be accommodated. If you have a specific
request please submit in writing by November 24 (requests after this time will not be considered). Unlike in
previous years, students will not be asked to nominate other students they would like to be in a class with.
Teachers are best placed to make decisions regarding the learning of students and will consider many factors
when organising classes. I have full confidence that student learning and student wellbeing will be a priority.
Developing a School Plan Evening- 2018-2020
I will be holding a planning session on Thursday 23 November at 6:30pm and again on Friday 24 November
at 10:00am. Both sessions will be in the library. The aim of these sessions is to gather input from our parents to
develop a shared vision for our school as well as to consider our priority areas for the next three years.
Volunteer Morning Tea
In order to show our appreciation to the numerous volunteers who support our school in a myriad of ways our
school staff will be hosting a morning tea in the library at 11:15 am this Wednesday 16 November. In previous
years we have sent individual invitations however this process allows for people to be inadvertently missed.
Please consider this an invitation for all helpers to attend.
School Photos
We are aware that some students missed out on their sibling or individual photos. Stephane will be returning to
take these outstanding photos this Wednesday morning November 15 . Please send your child in full school
uniform if they require their photo to be taken. Lou Moffatt

Around the Classroom KL It was lovely to see so many of the Kindergarten Lemurs and their families at the Ben Venue Piggy Races on Saturday. It was certainly a great day and it was wonderful to see everyone having so much fun!
In the classroom KL have been learning about safety in a range of situations – sun safety, pedestrian safety and passenger safety. Students will also be visiting the Fire Training Centre in a few weeks time so that we can learn about fire safety.
In Maths last week we had had fun making fairy bread to help us learn about halves. We learned that it is
important to make sure that our pieces are equal so that it is fair.
We have a busy few weeks coming up and have been getting ready for our assembly item next week. We would love to see you all again for a picnic lunch afterwards – keep an eye out for the note that will be coming home. Sue Lye
Last Friday November 10 all Year 3 students travelled to Point Lookout in the
New England National Park for their annual excursion. When we arrived we met
the staff from Thalgarrah who took us on a bush walk into a rain forest. Here we
were able to experience the
diverse plants and animals that
live in this fascinating
environment. On our way home
we also stopped at the Dutton
Trout Hatchery and learned about
how rainbow and brown trout are
bred and then released into
nearby rivers and streams.

Far Out Science: Science in the Bush
‘Far Out Science’ is a free program that includes lots of interesting and exciting science activities for children, such as Science in the Bush and the Science and Engineering Challenge. Science in the Bush is an annual event held at the University of New England.
These programs intend to demonstrate the astonishing variety and vitality of science that happens in our part of the world. It is a day of hands-on workshops, with students taking on experimental challenges and coming face-to-face with cutting-edge research.
The day kicked off at 9:30am at Lazenby Hall at the University of New England campus, Armidale. Students were allocated a guide and travelled by foot, around the campus to a variety of different activities.
Activities offered include making slime and hot/cold packs in the Chemistry lab, monitoring blood pressure and germs in the Nursing Science lab, understanding the psychology of how we think and making awesome rockets fly with liquid nitrogen!!!!
On a whole, the day was very well organised and with their aim being, to inspire students into the field of Science, appears to have ignited a spark in many of the students who attended from Ben Venue P S. Rebecca O’Hara
