GATHER IN ONE LARGE GROUP

Main Goal: Introduce and discuss today’s BIG IDEA.

Supplies: None

Video: None

Time: 10 minutes

Tip: As kids arrive, give each kid a different colored dot sticker. This will determine which team they’re on. Each small group will need a different color.

Motions:● God

● Always (https://www.handspeak.com/word/search/index.php?id=71)

● Promises (https://www.handspeak.com/word/search/index.php?id=1737)

● Welcome: Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids’ Club. I’m so happy to see you guys here. Raise your hand if you have a family, or people you think of as your family? (Let kids respond.) Families all look different, right? Some are big, some are little….we all have unique families! And God decided to build a special family for Jesus, the rescuer who came to save us from all the wrong things in the world.

● Say: God started this special family with a guy named Abraham and his wife Sarah. Can you say ‘Abraham and Sarah’? (Let kids respond.) He promised that THEY would be the father and mother of a huge family! And that leads to today’s BIG IDEA: God ALWAYS keeps his promises to us.

● Say: Let’s do motions to help us remember that:○ God (face your palm to the side, and move it downward)○ Always (point your finger upward, and move in a circular

motion)○ Keeps his promises (hold up a fist, and smack your

other hand on top of it)○ To us (point to yourself)

● Ask: Does anyone know what a promise is? (Let kids respond.) It’s when you say you’ll do something….and then you DO it! And today, we’re going to see how God keeps a promise to Abraham and Sarah.

● Say: The thing is, when God promised Abraham and Sarah a big family….they didn’t have any kids! And they were pretty old, probably around 90! They had been waiting to have a baby for a very, VERY long time.

● Ask: How do you think Abraham and Sarah felt when they were waiting for a baby, and it was taking sooooo long? (Let kids respond.) Yeah, maybe tired, disappointed, or sad. It’s hard to wait for something you really, really want!

● Say: Let’s check out a video of a cool science experiment. As you watch, try to figure out why waiting is an important part of the experiment!

● Video: Sick Science / Homemade Rock Candy● Ask: I bet it would be soooo hard to wait for that yummy rock

candy to form, but waiting has to happen for it to turn into the candy!

● Say: It was the same with Abraham and Sarah. They waited a really long time to have a family. But they also knew that God always keeps his promises, so they trusted in him….and they kept waiting for a family. Now let’s play a fun game that’s all about families! You can stay right where you are!

*Start the 10-minute timer for the next part of the lesson.

Part 1 (Large Group)

Page 3: K-2nd49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · the experiment! Video: Sick Science / Homemade Rock Candy Ask: I bet it would be soooo hard to wait for

SPLIT INTO SMALL GROUPS

Main Goal: Discuss with kids how they’ve experienced waiting and promises.

Supplies:● “Find your family”

images (distribute different images amongst all kids; 6 types of images total)

● markers

Time: 10 minutes

● Gather all the kids in one area of the room (this can be in the large group area that kids are already sitting in).

● Give each kid one of six images; tell them not to look at the image yet.

● Explain the rules of the “Find-Your-Family” game:○ When you say “Go find your family!” they should look at

the image.○ Their job is to find all the other kids with same picture

(there are 6 pictures).○ When everybody has a group, they’ve found their family!

They should link arms and sit down. ■ Once you see kids sitting down, hand them a box

of markers.■ With arms linked, they all need to color their

picture as fast as they can, together!■ This is to make it extra challenging and silly, but

you can just have kids color on their own if that’s easier.

● Ask (this can be as a large group):○ What’s a family?○ What people are in your family? ○ What do you do with your family?

TRANSITION● (If kids are sitting far away from the large group area) Now

let’s all get back into one large group by crab walking on our hands and feet!

*When the 10-minute timer is up, go back to Large Group.

GATHER IN ONE LARGE GROUP

Main Goal: Find out how God kept his promise to Abraham and Sarah, and why he’ll keep his promises to us too.

Supplies: None

Video: ● Video: God’s Story /

Abraham and Sarah (

Time: 10 minutes

Motions:● God (face your palm to

the side, and move it downward)

● Always (point your finger upward, and move in a circular motion)

● Keeps his promises (hold up a fist, and smack your other hand on top of it)

● To us(point to yourself)

● Say: Let’s remember our BIG IDEA for today: God ALWAYS keeps his promises to us. (Repeat motions with kids).

● Say: We’re going to watch a video and see exactly how God kept his promise to Abraham and Sarah, and how it shows that he’ll keep his promises to us too.

● Video: God’s Story / Abraham and Sarah● Say: So did God keep his promise?? (Let kids respond.) Yes!

God gave them a son, and that son had kids, and those kids had kids….and their family became a BIG family, that one day, Jesus would be born into! Pretty amazing, huh!?

● Ask: I bet it was kind of hard to wait so long, right? Do YOU think it’s hard to wait for things? (Let kids respond.) It sure is. But when it comes to God’s promises, we can be sure that no matter how long we wait, he will keep those promises.

● Say: Let’s read a verse that helps us understand WHY we can be sure God will keep his promises to us.

● Slide: Colossians 1:16a All things were created in him. He created everything in heaven and on earth. He created everything that can be seen and everything that can’t be seen.

● Say: You see, God is more powerful than anything! He created us, and he has a plan for us. He can do ANYTHING, and that includes taking care of us and keeping his promises. So we never have to worry, because he LOVES us and will always do what he says he’ll do.

● Say: So who remembers what happened to Abraham’s family? (Let kids respond.) Yep, Abraham and Sarah’s family got bigger, just like God said it would. And one day, a long time after that, came Jesus, who rescued us from all the wrong things in the world! So now WE can choose to follow Jesus and be part of God’s family, too!

TRANSITION● Say: To help us remember how God kept his promise, and

made Abraham’s family grow into a huge nation, let’s play a game! (Stay in one large group for the next activity.)

*Start the 10-minute timer for the next part of the lesson.

Part 3 (Large Group)

Page 5: K-2nd49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · the experiment! Video: Sick Science / Homemade Rock Candy Ask: I bet it would be soooo hard to wait for

STAY IN ONE LARGE GROUP.

Main Goal: Play a fun version of tag to help kids understand how Abraham’s family grew and grew!

Supplies: None

Time: 10 minutes

CHAIN TAG● Choose one kid to be “it”● “It” has to try and tag another kid.● When they tag someone, that kid links arms and becomes “it”

too. Now both kids (with arms linked) have to try and tag more and add them to their chain.

● The chain will get longer and longer as more kids are tagged and link arms with the chain.

● The game ends when all the kids are part of the chain.● If your room is getting too rowdy, give kids some rules:

○ Instead of running, have kids do slower (but fun) types of walking, like skipping, walking backwards, walking sideways, crawling, walking on their knees, scooting on their bottoms, army crawling on their bellies, crab walking, etc. (This applies to everyone, whether you’re in the chain or not!)

● Have a smaller group of kids?○ Have everyone only walk in ways that are slower, so the

game won’t be over so fast. For example, everyone (including the kids who are linked) have to crawl or hop. Or have only the kids that are link do a slower motion, while the kids running away can do a faster motion. Adapt as needed for your room!

● Play multiple rounds if you have time, then ask:○ What happened to the original “it”? ○ How is this like Abraham’s family?○ How did God keep his promise to Abraham?

TRANSITION● Say: Now let’s all get back into one large group. Everyone find a

place to sit by scooting there on your bottom!

*When the 10-minute timer is up, go back to Large Group.

Part 4

GATHER IN ONE LARGE GROUP

Main Goal: Give kids a chance to respond to what they’ve heard today, and worship!

Supplies: None

Video: ● I Am Yours

● This Little Light (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIL2qGJiAqY)

Time: 10 minutes

Motions:● God (face your palm to

the side, and move it downward)

● Always (point your finger upward, and move in a circular motion)

● Keeps his promises (hold up a fist, and smack your other hand on top of it)

● To us(point to yourself)

● Say: Let’s remember our BIG IDEA for today (ask any kids if they can remember it on their own): God ALWAYS keeps his promises to us. (Repeat motions with kids).

● Say: That means that the coolest part of today’s story...is that God makes promises to YOU too! And he will always keep them!

● Say: Here’s a few promises that we know God has made to us, because he tells us in the Bible!

● Say: Let’s thank God for this is by singing to him in worship. Everybody stand up and try to follow along to this new music video. It’s a little different than normal; there’s someone explaining the motions as they do them, so try to get into it! (Lead by example and do the motions in front of/with kids.)

● Music Video: I Am Yours (Motions)● Music Video: This Little Light ● Pray: Close in prayer, or have a kid come up and pray.

TRANSITION● Say: Now it’s time to get into our small groups. Let’s see if you

can do jumping jacks WHILE going to your group!

*Dismiss kids to small groups for the rest of the hour.

Part 5 (Large Group)

Page 7: K-2nd49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · the experiment! Video: Sick Science / Homemade Rock Candy Ask: I bet it would be soooo hard to wait for

SPLIT INTO SMALL GROUPS FOR THE REST OF THE HOUR.

Main Goal: Create a craft to help kids discuss and respond to today’s story.

Supplies: ● Paper strip (1/kid)● Markers (1 set/group)● Pipe cleaner (1/kid)● Star beads (10/kid)

Time: 10 minutes (or until the end of the service)

Tip: You can ask the review questions at the beginning of Small Group, or DURING the activity.

RESPOND TO THE STORY*Tell kids that in a little bit, after we’ve done our craft, everyone will get a stamp on their hand! But we have to WAIT just a little bit for it, just like Abraham and Sarah waited.

● Ask: Who remembers the special way God described how big Abraham’s family would be? (He said Abraham’s family would be so big, they would outnumber all the stars in the sky.)

● Say: We’re going to create a star bracelet to remind us how God kept that special promise to Abraham, and he keeps his promises to us too.

● Give each kid a pipe cleaner and 10 star beads. Let them string the beads onto the pipe cleaner to make a bracelet.

● As kids string each star in their pipe cleaner, they should think of a different person that’s in their own family, or who they want to be in God’s family. Encourage kids to share how they can:

○ Pray for them○ Tell them about Jesus○ Help them/do something kind for them, etc.

● Then twist the ends of the pipe cleaner together to fasten it (they may need help with this part.)

● Ask (can ask while kids work):○ What promises did God make to Abraham and Sarah?

(A family; descendants as numerous as the stars; that Abraham would be the father of a great nation.)

○ Did they believe the promises? Why or why not?○ Why was it hard for Abraham and Sarah to trust God's

Promise? (They had to wait, they were old.) ○ Why did God start a family? How can we be part of

Abraham and Sarah’s family? (Hint: that’s the same as being part of God’s family!)

○ Have you ever had to wait for something? Tell us about it (if they haven’t shared it already).

○ Do you believe God makes promises to you? How do you know he’ll keep them?

● Remind kids that when you make a promise, you do what you say you’ll do, just like God kept his promise to Abraham and Sarah. And since you promised to give them a stamp if they could wait for a little bit, now they’ll get one!

● Give each kid a stamp on the top of his/her hand.

EXTRA TIME?● Give kids maze and word-search activity sheets to work on

until their parents pick them up.*Keep kids in small group until parent pickup.
