Our alpine apparel delivers effective protection from cold and

wet mountain weather; it also provides the durability, extreme

breathability and superb stretch mobility you need at the lo-

west possible weight. Critical wear points are often additionally

reinforced to guard against damage caused by contact with

sharp items of equipment or rock. The jacket pockets are usually

raised to ensure easy access when wearing a climbing harness

or rucksack waist belt. Additional weather protective detailing

(e.g. storm collar, helmet-compatible hood) is also typical of the

products in our ALPINE TREK line.

Tine is a mountain guide and knows the Julian Alps like the

back of his hand. He leads us up a narrow ridge from the Prevala

saddle to Rombon, past metre-thick ice fields, seven summits...

and sheep. The sun burns mercilessly. Gaping voids to the left

and right. The jagged peaks pierce the soft blue sky. In the dis-

tance, the heat has claimed another victim, as forest fires send

up thick plumes of smoke.

30 heat, 20 kg on our backs and the tricky terrain sap our energy.

A spring with glass-clear, icy-cold water helps a little. Tents pitched,

we indulge in some seriously competitive sleeping bag bunny

hopping before collapsing exhausted into our cosy down cocoons.

Frost covers the sparse grass. We open our eyes to coffee and a

panoramic view. Todays objective is Mangart, the highest moun-

tain in the region. The Via Italiana via ferrata is a good test of

our head for heights. The terrain is exposed, with big gulleys

and steep traverses leading up to the ridge at 2300 metres. An

incredible view across the border to Friaul in Italy and the Aus-

trian province of Carinthia is the crowning glory of the route.

Whats so special about TEXAPORE SOFT

SHELL? TEXAPORE SOFT SHELL is a 3-layer

laminate with all the attributes of a soft-

shell fabric; it is also waterproof.

Waterproof softshells have been around for

a while, though, havent they? Thats correct

up to a point. There were waterproof

softshell fabrics, sure; for example, our

STORMLOCK SOFTSHELL HYPROOF. But

the seams were never totally water proof.

And now they are? What changes have you

made? Thats the key point. TEXAPORE

SOFTSHELL has a jersey reverse side that

will take a special seam sealing tape. This

means we can seal the seams and make

them fully waterproof.

You said that TEXAPORE SOFTSHELL has all

the attributes of a normal softshell fabric.

What are they? We were one of the first

outdoor manufacturers to make soft-

shells. And the development has been

continuous right up to the present day.

Softshells are characterised by their high

levels of stretch comfort and breathabil-

ity. They also allow excellent free dom

of movement. Up to now they have only

provided a minimum level of weather

protection but with TEXAPORE SOFT-

SHELL this is no longer the case; now we

have the best of both worlds.

What does this mean for the user? Previ-

ously youve always had to take a soft-

shell and a hardshell with you the

softshell as a light, windproof (or wind

resistant) and breathable layer and the

hardshell in case the weather turns bad.

With TEXAPORE SOFTSHELL you only

need one jacket. That means you save

weight and can keep the jacket on the

whole time youre out.

Combining functional garments in a technical layering system allows the three main criteria

for alpine clothing to be fulfilled: weather protection, insulation and climate comfort.

Climate comfort: The first layer, or base

layer, should be capable of wicking sweat

rapidly and effectively away from the body.

This prevents you feeling damp and cold.

Our functional tops and functional under-

wear are perfect for the job. For high-intensity

activities base layers made from polyester

fabrics are best (e.g. our new DRYN LIGHT

underwear), as they are very quick drying.

For those who prefer natural fabrics, Merino

wool is highly recommended; Merino absorbs

less moisture than normal wool.

Insulation: The second layer in the system,

the mid layer, is usually a fleece or a light down

jacket, depending on the activity and tem per-

ature. The job of the mid layer is to shift mois-

ture from the first layer to the outer layer and

to provide insulation. You will now find down

jackets suitable for an alpine layering system

in our summer collection.

Weather protection: If youre expecting

the weather to be mainly dry a softshell is

generally the best choice. Softshells are wind

and water resistant and offer great climate

comfort and mobility. In heavy rain you really

need a weatherproof hardshell jacket. These

jackets are totally waterproof, windproof and

breathable.

Dancing on the volcano. Six days of endurance sports. And more than a few surprises: 1. Like the way the spectacle of the sunrise on Pico de la Cruz

just blows away any feelings of tiredness. We take a breather

and enjoy our first coffee of the day, courtesy of Annemarie

(the lovely lady at El Provenir).

2. Like the fact that whichever direction you look theres another

amazing view to be had: a sea of cotton wool clouds, an awe-

some crater, rough mountain trails leading down into the valley.

3. Like the sudden realisation over papas arrugadas and fresh

fish in the quaint little bar we find on our first evening that

Moritz and Robert speak perfect Spanish.

4. Like the huge fun we had on the challenging MTB downhill

over the perilously sharp lava gravel.

5. Like the nicknames the waitress in the pizzeria came up with

for us (from Mouse to Macho).

6. Like the little houses at Pirates Cove near Tijarafe. How did they

get there and who built them?

7. And the fact that shortly after leaving we wanted to go back

again.

We were all meant to meet at the airport, but when we (Gaudenz,

Matt and Stefan) arrive in Lombok theres no sign of Abrie. Reluc

tantly, we leave the airport and head for the hotel, where we meet

a totally relaxed Abrie. It seems no one had thought to mention

shed be there. Since the kitchen is already closed, our breakfast

order for the morning ends up being rather lavish. Basically, we

order everything on the menu!

Day 2

Its early in the day and already hot as we walk through the pic

tur esque rice fields. The sweat is streaming off us but the beautiful

local women in the fields seem unaffected by the heat. We stop for

lunch in a weavers village where we sample the water spinach

and Gadogado (vegetable salad with a delicious sauce). The women

of the village weave handspun cotton, which they dye themselves.

Day 3

Gaudenz and Steffen are woken up by Abrie banging on their door

and just about make it down in time for breakfast. Our guides,

Eddie and Sandy, are already there. Sandy looks like an Indonesi

an version of Bob Marley. On the first part of the ascent of Rinjani

its hellish hot. Fittingly, the trail leads through swirling volcanic

ash and the remains of a forest fire. Lively macaques follow us

through the trees. Up on the ridge we are overwhelmed by the

view and the stench. Its incredible how much garbage is lying

around. We look for a clean campsite, collecting rubbish as we go.

The beer sold up here by the enterprising locals provides welcome

refreshment.

Day 4

Wake up with a mug of freshly brewed Lombok coffee. Its 2 o clock

(in the morning!) and time to set off for the summit of Rinjani. The

mountain is part of the Sunda Arc, home to some of the worlds

most explosive volcanoes which is a pretty exciting thought!

As the sun rises, a magical spectacle unfolds. A young, active

volcano is forming in the caldera, rising out of the lake... In the

distance is Bali, darkened by the conical shadow cast by Rinjani.

We are at 3726 metres, with 2000 metres of climbing behind us. In

the evening we relax in the hot springs near our campsite.

Day 5

A mixed day descent and rest. Matt and Stefan try to do a bit of

fishing. With little success, in spite of the fishing rods. Right next to

them one of the locals catches fish with his bare hands.

The mood is good, and lasts the whole day long. Were almost

over the finish line when Eddie decides he wants to show us a

lovely waterfall. 400 steps? It had better be worth it! It is. The

view is just mind-blowing. The water is cold when we dive in.

Thus refreshed, we head for the car, which takes us back to

our fantastic beach hotel. After a relaxed evening and a good

nights rest we set off for home the end of an incredible trip.

The solution is in the air! The basic concept

behind the development of the air perme able

weather protection fabric, TEXAPORE AIR, was

the following:

No matter how breathable a weather protec

tion fabric is, the best ventilation is often

achieved by unzipping the jacket or opening

the venting zips. The big question was, how

could we integrate this level of ventilation

performance into the fabric itself while still

making it reliably waterproof and windproof?

Thinking outside the box provided the solu

tion. We noticed, for example, that a thatched

roof provides a weatherproof seal and effec

tive ventilation at the same time, and that

there are filters that keep water out yet allow

air to pass through. Our TEXAPORE AIR tech

nology works on the same principle.

TEXAPORE AIR exhibits the essential water

proof and windproof performance of a

weather protection fabric but is also air per

meable. This allows constant air exchange to

occur through the fabric itself, so the process

works even when the jacket is zipped up.

This produces a noticeable improvement in

climate comfort. The air flow not only has a

basic cooling effect but also increases the

breathability by supporting the moisture

vapour transmission through the fabric. The

more you move, the more air is exchanged

and the more breathable the fabric becomes.

Ryan made friends with a donkey in the Bucegi mountains. Four

hours drive away, in the more alpine Fgra range, the sheep

seemed to be calling Matts name. And we were also followed

by a few local dogs. There were human encounters, too, during

our trip to the two mountain ranges of the Southern Carpathians.

It all added to the experience.
